00:11If I had to think about the feelings, I should be terrified.
00:16How can I cope? How will I be able to move forward?
00:24My name is Ravi Rangbier.
00:28I'm the executive director of the New Sanctuary Coalition.
00:31It's an interfaith, multifaith organization made up of mandirals and temples and synagogues and churches.
00:39New Sanctuary Coalition doesn't believe anyone should be deported.
00:42So we will fight to keep them here with their family.
01:11Thank you everyone for being here and inviting me to speak.
01:15I'm from the Caribbean, Trinidad and Tobago, and we can talk very fast.
01:20So houses of worship has always been a space of sanctuary for people who have been persecuted.
01:26Underground Railroad, under the Safe Trade, Harriet Tubman, right?
01:29The whole book of Exodus is a journey of migration.
01:34The reason why we're here is good immigrant, bad immigrant.
01:38Arizona signed into legislation every immigrant who was undocumented is a criminal.
01:45So you see the shift?
01:47It's used against us.
01:49Trump will, will arrest a million people to deport them.
01:55The New Sanctuary and his members are going to stop a million people from being deported.
01:59We will stop a million people from being deported.
02:01Jesus tells us take care of the marginalized.
02:04Mm-hmm.
02:06And here we are right in our midst.
02:08We have the marginalized that need us to stand up for them.
02:12Mm-hmm.
02:12We are going to be confrontational without being confrontational.
02:16So we are looking at ways that we will challenge in them, but we're going to do it nicely.
02:21We're going to smile as we do it.
02:24So what is your role?
02:28Supporting the person.
02:31Supporting the immigrant themselves, right?
02:34When the officer calls me up to the door, what are you going to do?
02:37Get up and follow me.
02:38Get up and follow me, right?
02:40I'm going to turn my paperwork in at the window.
02:43What are you doing when I'm doing that?
02:45Standing by your shoulder.
02:46Walking with me to that window.
02:50They want to make sanctuary a dirty wood.
02:54They want to make it a nasty wood.
02:56They want to make it a poisonous wood.
02:58We should not allow that to happen.
03:00Thank you very much, everyone.
03:02Thank you very much everyone.
03:06Thank you very much, everyone.
03:30I have a criminal conviction for wire fraud.
03:33For the last 10 years, I've not had a green card.
03:36I spent just under three years in the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
03:40Then I was in immigration detention for two years.
03:52If it wasn't for the conviction, I could have been a citizen.
03:55But the criminal conviction just bars me from any immigration benefits.
04:00The good immigrant, bad immigrant rhetoric, right?
04:04So no matter whether my daughter is a U.S. citizen,
04:07my wife is a U.S. citizen,
04:09all of that doesn't matter because it comes down to the conviction
04:12and the impact that conviction has on my life.
04:21This is a reading from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s
04:24letter from a Birmingham jail written in 1963.
04:29There comes a time when the cup of endurance runs over.
04:34One may well ask,
04:36how can you advocate breaking some laws and obeying others?
04:40The answer lies in the fact that there are two types of laws,
04:45just and unjust.
04:47How does one determine whether a law is just or unjust?
04:52A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God.
05:00An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law.
05:07Everyone has made mistakes.
05:09Do I even have to pay for the rest of my life?
05:13I need to be forgiven.
05:15Any law that uplifts human personality is just.
05:19Any law that degrades human personality is unjust.
05:24Any law that has made mistakes.
05:24Any law that has beenαι the most or unjust.
05:29Any law that has made mistakes.
05:34Any law that can be made mistakes.
05:37You
