00:00You have poop on your phone right now. Statistically speaking, you have poop
00:03bacteria on your phone. It's that time of year again. Allergies are flaring up, the
00:09seasons are changing, the temperature is dropping. This usually comes with copious
00:13amounts of sneezing, runny noses, mucus, congestion, cold and coughing, and basic
00:19social research tells people that they get sick during the colder months. Today
00:23we'll be exploring what actually makes us sick. What are germs, what is the common
00:28cold, and how can we protect ourselves when it seems that everyone around us
00:32is getting sick? Today I have Dr. Mike, the internet famous doctor, here with me
00:36who's gonna help answer some of my questions. Let's do it. But I have here
00:40this lotion-based simulated germs which are used for training purposes. I'm
00:44essentially going to rub these germs all over my hands and then I'm gonna invite
00:50Dr. Mike in to sit with me and we are gonna see how these germs spread. Dr. Mike
00:55has no idea what's happening. I'm very suspicious with your little knife
00:59kit here. Don't be suspicious. Some more. Okay. To see who gets to cut the orange first.
01:05No, you're cheating. No, I'm not. No, you can't move your elbow. Lock your elbow in.
01:10I am. Lock it in. My mom said. My mom said whatever you need me to say to beat you.
01:16I want to play doctor. But you're not even a doctor. I don't have to be a doctor to know
01:20what to do. You are
01:21going to teach me. We're going to listen right here. No, you don't. You don't listen here. I don't know
01:24what
01:24you're doing. Are you just getting... You sound so loud. I'm gonna let you in on a
01:28little secret. Before you came into this room, I rubbed simulated germ lotion. And
01:35now I have a blacklight flashlight and we're gonna turn this on and see how they
01:41spread. Okay. Are you ready? Yeah, I'm expecting us to be fully purple. Oh man. Oh no, don't, don't cut.
01:47All right, so here's all the lotion on my hands. Oh, you're... Oh, I was gonna say I'm clean. No,
01:54I'm not.
01:55No, I got it all under my nails. Oh, do my straw. All right, your straw. Oh, it has little
02:02particles.
02:03It's got... Oh, right at the top. Oh, look at that, at the tip. Right where your mouth goes. Just
02:06the tip.
02:07Oh, you rubbed your face when you were talking to me. All right, time to see your face.
02:13It's everywhere. No, it's not. It's right over your cheek and nose and mouth. Look, so when we talk about
02:19the
02:20importance of washing your hands, it's to prevent this from happening, to prevent all these germs from
02:25being everywhere. What is a germ? Can you break down a germ for me? So a germ is really anything
02:31that lives
02:32outside of your body. Bacteria, fungi, or viruses. Those are what we call germs.
02:37So any foreign intruder that winds up in your body is a germ. Yep, I would call it that.
02:43What is the common cold? It's a virus. And is it the most frequent virus found in the world?
02:48The most frequent viruses that cause the common cold are rhinovirus and coronavirus.
02:53It comes in a lot of strands, but those are the most common ones. Got it. Why do we get
02:58sick?
02:58Because, you know, I think I have a pretty good immune system, but it still gets me every so often.
03:02Okay, so this is a common misconception. People think that because they have a bad immune system,
03:07they get sick more often. In reality, when you get sick, that's your immune system kicking butt.
03:12When you get a fever, when you feel fatigued, and you feel all these bad symptoms, those symptoms
03:18are a direct result of your body kicking butt. But in reality, our immune systems are fighting off
03:23thousands of infections every day without you even knowing.
03:26What's the best way? I guess, is washing your hands the answer?
03:31Yes. Yes. It's the best protection that we have from the outside world of the germs coming into our body.
03:38The process that you want to follow, you want to wet your hands first with the water on.
03:42Okay. Then you take the soap, you pump it in, and make sure that both your front and the backs
03:47of your hands
03:47are fully covered and lathered up. And as you wash your hands, you want to let 20 to 25 seconds
03:51go by.
03:52It's a long time. Which is two verses of the Happy Birthday song that you can have.
03:56Rinse, dry your hands off, and you're good to go.
03:59And then I've officially knocked off as many germs as I can.
04:03Yes, the best thing that you can do for you. You'll be surprised. Most people are not washing their hands
04:07after the bathroom.
04:08Are you serious? Yes. There's been studies done on that too.
04:11That is nasty. Here's another thing that most people don't think about.
04:14And one of the things I recommend to not get sick is to wear socks at home.
04:18I do that all the time.
04:19See?
04:19Are your feet like a major emitter of body heat?
04:23So it's not so much at the major emitter, but if your feet get cold, it's been proven that your
04:28entire body chills down.
04:30Oh, man.
04:30So we're keeping you healthy, and I guess I'm keeping you healthy too.
04:33You are. After talking to Dr. Mike, I feel so much more educated about cold and flu season,
04:38and I know the four things that I need to do if I want any shot at staying healthy.
04:43Number one, focus on the three pillars of health.
04:46Sleeping, eating well, and exercising. We've got that in the can.
04:50Number two, make sure that I'm wearing warm, fuzzy socks throughout the winter months. Easy enough.
04:56Number three, wash my hands six to eight times a day because we know how creepy and crawly those germs
05:01are.
05:02And number four, get a flu shot. It's not that hard. I haven't gotten one either,
05:07so we can go together if you want. Send me a DM.
