Branded Try Living With Lucie episode by Spindrift
Transcript
00:00I'm Lucy Fink and this week is five days of swapping summer routines.
00:05I already did an episode of Try Living with Lucy where I lived my anti-routine for five
00:09days and instead I took on the daily routines of some family members and friends and co-workers.
00:14And this episode is going to be similar except there's one major exception.
00:18Did you just hear my arm crack?
00:20The routines that I'm taking on this week are people's summer routines.
00:24Let's get into it and I'll show you what I did.
00:30If you're a major Try Living with Lucy fan and you've watched a bunch of my previous
00:33episodes you might know my camera guy Andrew.
00:37He's been shooting this series with me since 2015 and in the process the two of us have
00:41become really close friends.
00:42Andrew is one of those people who I aspire to be like, mind, body, and spirit.
00:47He has such a positive outlook on life and he's just all about waking up when the sun rises,
00:52being active, and enjoying each and every day.
00:55Good morning Lucy.
00:56Welcome to Andrew's summer routine.
00:58Starts here at 7am.
01:00Welcome to coffee time.
01:04I do not wake up as early as Andrew does naturally so on Monday I set my alarm for 7am
01:10and then
01:11I was wide awake for coffee time.
01:14Coffee time is a serious ritual for Andrew.
01:17Wow.
01:18He's not joking around with his coffee time.
01:20Woo!
01:21And since Andrew often goes through one, two, sometimes three cups of coffee, I have
01:26to do the same.
01:30Once you're done with a couple of your cups of coffee and you're all pepped up, there's
01:34only one thing left to do Lucy.
01:36Time to hit the skate park, roll around a little and have some fun.
01:40Andrew does not work out, he never goes to the gym, he doesn't take exercise classes.
01:44His motto is, and I've heard him say this many times, the world is your playground.
01:50And on Monday I accompanied Andrew to the skate park on the lower east side, the one
01:54that he normally goes to.
01:59And it was hot outside.
02:05He did a bunch of his favorite tricks, and then I tried a few of my own.
02:10Woo!
02:11I'm going to try to jump and do a kickflip.
02:20I even took it one step further and really swapped routines with him by taking hold of
02:25the camera and becoming the camera operator.
02:27Wow!
02:28I'm a camera woman!
02:30Woo!
02:32It's great doing your routine.
02:34After I like to go to the park, I like to come home and, you know, unwind, mill about
02:39the house.
02:40I love doing house projects.
02:41You caught me on a really good summer.
02:43So, I'm going to have you scrape in some paint, paint some moldings.
02:46I'm not doing any construction or any renovation projects in my apartment at the moment.
02:51So instead, I just went to Andrew's home and did his housework.
02:59But after Monday's crazy active day of waking up early and going to the skate park and then
03:04coming home and doing housework, I understand how Andrew gets tired so early.
03:11Cheers!
03:13When I got home from this day, I walked into my apartment and I just collapsed onto the couch.
03:22It's always so surprising to me how people that have jobs not in the social media world
03:26are able to be so disconnected from social media.
03:29So, for my next routine, I wanted to choose someone who's way less connected to social
03:33media than I am.
03:34I chose my twin sister, Allie.
03:36Hey, Loubug.
03:37Typically, when I get up in the summer, I try to avoid looking at my phone right away
03:40while I'm getting ready for the day.
03:42I don't know about you guys, but sometimes I find that instinctively, first thing I do
03:46when I wake up in the morning is I reach for my phone and I open it and I start
03:50scrolling.
03:50And by the time I put it down, I find that not only have I wasted so much time, but
03:55I'm
03:55not really in the best mental state to go about the rest of my morning.
03:58The moment I woke up, I put my phone into airplane mode and then I left it that way as
04:02I got ready for the rest of the day.
04:04The next thing I do is I get up and I try to enjoy the nice weather by taking a
04:08walk outside.
04:09For these walks, I really try to leave my phone behind or just put it in a bag so that
04:13when
04:14I'm walking, I can enjoy the nice scenery rather than looking down at my phone.
04:17I cannot tell you how often I walk around New York City and I'm either fixated on my
04:22phone or I'm just so busy in my own thoughts that I'm actually not even looking where I'm
04:27going.
04:27So on Tuesday, I went for a walk outside and I made sure to walk around in the best way
04:32possible.
04:32Eyes up, looking around, soaking in my surroundings.
04:36One thing I loved about this day was that I noticed some amazing architecture on the buildings
04:41that I pass every day, things that I've never even looked up at or noticed before.
04:44I walked to the park and I just sat for a few hours by myself with my book.
04:49I left my phone at home and I just had some nice, peaceful, quiet time.
04:53We as humans are meant to be outdoors and we're meant to ground ourselves by putting our bare
04:58feet on the ground.
04:58And sometimes living in a city makes it really difficult to do that, but you've got to find
05:03the green patches.
05:04Find a little patch of grass.
05:06The last thing that I do that's part of my summer routine is that I come home and I enjoy
05:11making a nice home-cooked meal.
05:13To really adopt Allie's routine, I copied one of her favorite recipes from a cookbook
05:17she gave me.
05:18Brown rice pasta with sauteed veggies.
05:26Because it was such a hot summer day outside, I grabbed a cool and refreshing sparkling water
05:30to go along with my meal.
05:31And this was the perfect parallel to the meal I was making because one thing I love about
05:35cooking is that you know what you're eating and you know that you're making real food.
05:39And spindress sparkling water is nothing but sparkling water and real squeezed fruit.
05:44So everything I had for dinner was real and very simple and very delicious.
05:51When I think of summer, I typically think of relaxation.
05:54As kids, many of us grow up having summers off from school.
05:57So at least for me, summers were always a time to rest and to rejuvenate before the start
06:01of another year.
06:02But summer does not mean rest for everyone.
06:04For some people, it's actually the time when they're the busiest.
06:07They're hustling, they're running around, they're trying to get everything done so that they're
06:11actually ready when the fall rolls around.
06:13And for Refinery29's fashion market writer, this is what summer feels like.
06:18My summer is so go, go, go.
06:20It's absolutely insane, but in the best way possible.
06:23On a typical summer day, I usually wake up around 7 or 7.30 in the morning and my day
06:28is pretty much booked bell to bell from then through the evening.
06:32It's really pretty nuts, to be honest.
06:35Because I'm not a fashion writer, I obviously didn't have the same tasks as Alyssa, so instead
06:40I made my own to-do list of errands and things that I've been meaning to accomplish.
06:44Yeah, I know I'm coming.
06:46Yeah, I gotta do my errands first.
06:50I went to mail a package.
06:52I updated my credit card and cashed some checks.
06:55I got my legs waxed, bought groceries, refilled my subway card, donated clothing, picked up
07:05my dry cleaning, and grabbed some more plants for my apartment.
07:09It was hectic, to say the least.
07:12I'm so busy in the summer, but still, it's definitely a time to have fun.
07:16I try to make the time to plan something fun for myself, whether that's just reading in
07:21the park or seeing some girlfriends for something fun.
07:24So, try to balance a little bit of everything.
07:26Towards the second half of the day, I made sure to prioritize Alyssa's advice, and I met
07:31my friend Diana for a drink and an early dinner.
07:33Cheers!
07:34Cheers!
07:37When I got home at the end of this day, I was physically and mentally exhausted.
07:41My feet hurt.
07:42My head hurt.
07:43I was so proud of myself for getting all of the items done on my to-do list, but at
07:47the
07:47same time, I was so tired and all I wanted to do was sleep.
07:53So, I wanted to contrast Wednesday's crazy running around routine with the routine of
07:58someone who takes things a little bit more slowly.
08:00My coworker, Anissa, is all about rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation, so on Thursday, I asked her
08:06to share her routine with me.
08:08In the morning, I wake up.
08:09I make my bed right away.
08:11Making your bed first thing in the morning is actually something I implement into my
08:15daily routine.
08:16I find that it really just starts the day off on the right foot, and it's like a clean,
08:20fresh slate.
08:22And then I get on top of it, and I meditate.
08:24As for meditation, that's something that I've really been working on and I really want to
08:28include in my routine, and so far, I'm pretty comfortable with 10 to 15 minutes of meditation,
08:34but that's the max before I start to get really antsy.
08:36And to feel the effects of meditation, you don't have to sit there for long.
08:40So even if you can only sit still for one to two minutes, it's better than nothing.
08:44Next, while I'm still on my bed, I actually spend some time journaling.
08:48I love my journal, and I love taking time to just sit and write down my thoughts.
08:52So on Thursday, I made myself a hot cup of tea, and then I sat down.
08:56First thing in the morning, I wrote out my dreams from the night before, and I also wrote
09:00out some intentions for the upcoming day.
09:03And then lastly, in the evening, after work or after whatever I did that day, I get into
09:08my comfiest athleisure, maybe a cute robe, and I actually do my skincare routine.
09:14It's really important, I think, every day to make sure that you're doing something great
09:17for your skin.
09:18It's the only skin that you got, so you got to make it look glowy and happy.
09:22When I got home, I popped on my fuzziest robe, and from looking at my skin in the mirror,
09:26I just knew that what it needed was some energy and some vibrancy.
09:30I put on a pink glitter peel-off mask.
09:34Seriously, it was the coolest thing I've ever seen in my life.
09:38This is so sparkly.
09:41It feels so good on my face.
09:44Once it dried, I peeled it all off.
09:52And then I chopped up a cool cucumber, and I sat on my bed with cucumbers on my eyes.
09:57I've read that cucumbers have a mild lightening effect, so if you have dark circles under your
10:01eyes, supposedly they can help with that.
10:03And I've also heard there's something in them that helps reduce water retention,
10:07so if you have puffiness or swelling, it can help with that.
10:09In reality, I'm not sure if any of this is scientifically true about the cucumber,
10:14but it's definitely a classic spa staple that I've seen in countless movies,
10:18and we're making a mini-movie here, so I just wanted to include it.
10:25All right, so I've now taken on the summer routines of four local New Yorkers,
10:30people that live here every day and are pretty set in their ways.
10:32But on Friday, I kept wondering what would a New York City summer routine look like
10:37for someone that's just visiting New York, say, a tourist.
10:41So I reached out to my friend Coco, who lives across the country in San Francisco,
10:46and I asked her to send me a video of herself sharing what her classic
10:49daily routine would look like if she was a tourist visiting New York.
10:53So the first thing I always do is, no matter where I'm staying,
10:56I wake up and I just go outside and pretend I'm a local.
11:00And I just explore the neighborhood, walk around, go into a coffee shop.
11:03The Refinery29 office is situated all the way downtown on the southern tip of Manhattan
11:08in the Financial District.
11:10And even though I've worked at this company for a really long time,
11:13I actually don't know much about the Financial District.
11:15So I took Friday morning to follow Coco's advice and to explore this area as if I were a tourist.
11:23I walked around City Hall Park with a camera strapped around my neck and I took some great historical photos.
11:28I played in a public fountain, I ran through a flock of pigeons.
11:32I mean, it doesn't get any more touristy than this.
11:34I was also trying not to look at my phone for directions,
11:37so I went old school style and I got a physical map of the city.
11:41I even pulled a Joey Tribbiani and I put the map down and I stepped into the map to help
11:46orient myself.
11:51Next, if you're in New York City, you gotta go to Central Park.
11:55I love that it's just this huge, amazing park surrounded by city.
12:00Almost every major city has a spot like Central Park, even if it's not quite as big.
12:04And I'm a local in New York City and I myself have only been to Central Park a handful of
12:09times.
12:09So on Friday, I went to the park, I sat in some shade under a tree,
12:13I climbed on a rock like all the tourists do.
12:15I took some pictures, walked around, mainly I just chilled.
12:20Then, I love going to Times Square.
12:22And it's seriously such a magical place with all these people from all over the world.
12:28And it's just so quintessential New York City.
12:30Most large cities also have a major tourist attraction and in New York, that has got to be Times Square.
12:37Times Square is the theater district in Midtown Manhattan and it's filled with flashing lights,
12:41crazy crowds, street performers, and of course all of Broadway's historic theaters.
12:47I walked through Times Square very slowly and I even sat down at some points and just looked around and
12:53took it all in.
12:54The bright lights, the magic, the vibrancy, the city in Times Square feels so alive.
12:59Then, last but not least, I always go and get a slice of my very favorite dollar pizza.
13:05And of course, I grabbed Coco's favorite, which is also my favorite, dollar pizza.
13:10Routines are a very weird thing because on the one hand,
13:14we're always encouraged to make routines and to stick to a solid routine.
13:17We're told that the most successful people in the world have a routine and stick to it.
13:22But on the flip side, by breaking out of your routine and trying something else,
13:26you might actually find a better or a simpler way of doing things.
13:29And you might learn that you can feel more present and get more out of your day
13:33just by doing some simple things like putting your phone down or taking a walk outside with your head up.
13:38We'll see you next time on Try Living With Lucy. Bye!
