The cast and director of Ocean's 8 talk about women's role in the film industry on the red carpet.
Transcript
00:00I mean, the competition and the catfights were just out of control.
00:04Women can't be together. We can't. No one's funny.
00:07And it was just everyone stole each other's boyfriends.
00:09So now take that. It was the opposite of that. It was amazing.
00:20Hi, R29. We're coming to you from the red carpet of Ocean's 8,
00:24talking with the female ensemble cast, all things Hollywood,
00:27secrets from the set, and much more. Check out what they had to say.
00:33Some of the party humor is different, but if they're talented
00:37and they have a really strong work ethic and they're kind,
00:40then that's the group of people you want to be with.
00:42Amazing powerhouse women, yes.
00:44They're not, you know, they're not competition.
00:47They're more for each other and helping each other and sit together.
00:50That's the way it should be.
00:53I'm good at lying. I mean, that's what I do for the profession.
00:56Uh, stealth speed. I'm unbelievably fast.
00:59I would be crafty. How'd you craft services? I'd make the soup.
01:04I think I could probably distract really, really well.
01:06Um, I think I can pretty much talk continuously.
01:10So I think I could really wear out like a security guard.
01:14Um, I think that when it comes to like directors and behind the scenes work,
01:19women are not asking to replace men.
01:21I think that we just want a seat at the table too.
01:22And I think that's a fair ask.
01:24I mean, I love Jodie Foster. I think she's amazing as a director.
01:26I think she should do more.
01:27Well, I mean, when is standing next to me and she's been behind the camera.
01:32I think, you know, my friend Liz Banks is a great director.
01:35She's really, really good.
01:36I think Mindy Kaling one day in our cast, she's an auteur in her own right in television,
01:41would make a great director.
01:42Um, you know, I could go on and on.
01:48There's definitely an awareness now that there is an unfairness and, uh, it has to be addressed.
01:55It's so important.
01:56I think that we have female voices and female stories behind and in front of the camera
02:01and that we also champion and are happy for the allies, the other men, the other folks
02:07all along the gender spectrum who are wanting to help us tell those stories
02:11and bring stories of more marginalized or more oppressed voices to light.
02:15There's not enough of it.
02:16It's, I feel like, you know, when you do films or when you read a script or when you talk
02:21about,
02:22it always has to be the male lead and it all evolves around the male.
02:25Why? Why can't it just be all about winning?
02:27And we bring so much to the table and sometimes better things, different things.
02:32You know, I think that this is the beginning of a chapter of more diverse stories, more authentic stories
02:37and this is just, this is the beginning, you know?
02:40I think that the conversation has definitely gained momentum and I know that I've seen it
02:45as some very promising things, uh, particularly as a result of time, the times up initiative
02:50and all the great people who spoke out and me too.
02:53Um, as with any movement, the important thing is to keep the momentum going after that first wave
02:59kind of rides out, but, um, I'm not going anywhere.
03:03I don't think you're going anywhere.
03:05I think that we all, we all spent so long being separated from each other.
03:11And when we finally, I know for me, when I finally found it and I just realized that, like,
03:16oh my gosh, you have to be a sister to everyone, then I don't want to go back.
03:20I don't, I'm never letting my sisters go.
