00:14Umbu vaswaam
00:16Umbu vaswaam
00:27I honestly am
00:30I'm like such a die-hard Indian. I love everything. I think there's just so much to be inspired by
00:36My art is very Indian inspired. It's just Indian art immersed into street work culture
00:43the class basically means bullshit in Hindi or Punjabi it's just something
00:49where it's like people who know what it means they just look at it and they
00:52laugh I will do anything to get a reaction out of people but I don't know
00:57if I'm rebellious I feel like I'm a normal kid but for a lot of people they
01:03look at me and they're like oh my god you're such a badass and I'm just like
01:06I'm literally a five-foot-one Indian girl just like trying to like make her
01:13dreams come true I'm currently visiting LA for work and I wanted to reconnect
01:18with other Indians like myself who are embracing the roots in different unique
01:22ways how are you welcome so I have an LA ritual I have to have to have to see my
01:30friends Arjun and Knuckle over at their restaurant but mush so these guys are
01:36doing something really amazing they're trying to redefine what Indian
01:39restaurants really look like here in North America and like myself they're
01:43also Canadian and Punjabi tell us what you're gonna cut today for us the fried
01:49butter chicken sandwich first things first yeah we got to get the dredging right
01:54okay so I'm just gonna mix this all together you want to mix the figure eight
01:59figure eight figure eight infinity bro the shit is forever so now that our
02:05dredging is perfect enter the chicken all right drop that shit man let's go I'm
02:12ready 29 and here's a magic a little shake into the egg mm-hmm
02:20little flip and the next step is to drop that shit in the fryer okay so who thought
02:27of the name of badmash and why and what was the story behind that yeah I'll take claim
02:33for that almighty I'll take claim for that and then tell us what badmash means so badmash means naughty rascal
02:40the kid who's running around flipping tables and looking up skirts
02:44basically we are badmash's and we're taking Indian food and we're being badmash's with
02:49Indian food I mean we also wanted to like um to make that make Indian culture
02:55approachable to America we felt like it was being represented incorrectly like I
03:00mean being Indian and like say if I say if I'm Indian and I have a girlfriend you are
03:05I don't want to take him to Taj Mahal roti hut I don't want to take him to halal cut
03:10meats but in the back there's a grocery store I started to realize that you know
03:15the French chef or the Italian chef or you know the American kitchen was always
03:20so respected yeah but then Indian food and Indian restaurants are just like yeah
03:28yeah you know 9.99 all-you-can-eat buffet and so you don't have garlic naan yeah you
03:34know so that was something that we wanted to change we are the safe place for all of
03:42the badmash's yeah it's the the people who aren't the doctors the lawyers the
03:46engineers case in point you're not any of those
03:50look at that bubble you're none of those but you're you're totally rad
03:55put that to my mother please she refuses to believe
03:59auntie g heck yeah we got her this chicken looks mad crispy right now although this has a
04:06lot of flavor we're gonna dunk these fried chicken thighs and butter chicken sauce
04:15okay tell us why why why why why why not just get it right in there don't that don't
04:23throw this bad boy right on top it was so inspirational to have a conversation and
04:42the space with Arjun and knuckle about their point of view they also fed me
04:46butter chicken so that was nice but let's head over to happy China to meet my
04:50friend Stella and talk jewelry Stella has taken the love of her culture as a
04:55creative fuel for her jewelry line and I just wanted to hear more about it why
04:59she feels so passionate about jewelry and how it connects to her roots
05:04jewelry in our culture is such a big crucial part of just all of our
05:07traditions and our form of self-expression yeah but for me it's been an
05:13extension of myself it's a form of expression as in terms of identity so um by
05:19that I mean you know we get passed down a lot of pieces and they come with
05:24stories so I've acquired a lot of pieces from my grandmother or just my aunties yeah
05:28I feel like my mom has like hinting at me that I'm growing as a woman by just
05:34giving me like little pieces of gold because she thinks I can be now
05:37responsible for them oh my god so far I've made it to two rings yes this is our
05:43pearl signet ring but when my dad he married my mom he was given a pearl signet
05:48ring he actually um lost his ring and so I redesigned him his ring and then after
05:52that I created a variation which is what we're selling now I love it and then
05:56lastly this is um our Anna Queen while I was designing like the piece I really
06:02wanted a unique coin um my grandmother was alive but she had been passing so it
06:07was like more of an intimate experience for me um and so tell me more about the
06:11coin is this an actual coin yeah it's like the real coin that was in India in 1935 and it
06:17was also called Anna Queen and we call it the Anna Queen pendant but um my
06:22grandmother's name was Anna Wara and we called her Anna for short I try to do
06:25this a lot with my work where it's like I try to enforce my culture into the
06:30Western space because we need to like have that and I know that people
06:36appreciate our culture but it just needs to be done the right way my day's been
06:40great with my friends sharing stories on food tradition and jewelry I'm ready to
06:46experience something new about my culture so I'm headed over to Rasa Veda
06:50healing to me with Sheila an Ayurvedic practitioner to learn about traditional
06:55Ayurvedic medicine so thank you for having me in your space I'm super excited
07:01about it I feel already relaxed what I've cultivated here is the practice of my
07:06Ayurvedic practice it's a it's a 5,000 year old practice from India mm-hmm the
07:11technology and the treatments and the herbs they haven't changed and it's a
07:19practice that brings someone back into their balance okay and would you say it's
07:23more mental or like to do with more emotional well-being or more so with like
07:28I don't know stomach or like sure I have a physical all all of the above so are you
07:34that a medicine are you Vedic medicine I should say it is the combination of mind
07:39body spirit okay so I just wanted to get to know a little bit what we're gonna do
07:44today yeah we get started so it's a pizzichal which is the drenching of the
07:48body with the medicated herbal oil and then there's marma abhyangam so if you've
07:55ever had acupuncture medicine and then you experience shirodhara so the shirodhara is a
08:01copper vessel or any type of vessel that has a hole and it drops oil on the
08:08forehead and there are different patterns that happen and there'll be a lot of oil
08:11on me oil on your hair oil on your body I mean like oh my gosh I'm like drenched in
08:16oil in any given time about five years
08:45you know
08:53you know
08:55Prachodayant, Damsavidharvarinyam, Paragodivasimai, Yehoyona Prachodayat, Om Vuhaswam, Om Vuhaswam, Om Vuhaswam, Om Vuhum Vuhum.
09:41Thank you, my dear.
09:45That was an experience for sure.
09:48So I hope to see you again when you visit L.A.
09:51I definitely want to continue, I guess even like this practice
09:54and just kind of getting to know.
09:56I'm so happy you came and visited Rasavay the Healing.
09:59Yeah.
09:59And I'm wishing you such a beautiful journey in your life and your art
10:03and who you are coming to that.
10:05So thank you.
10:07Thank you for sharing space here.
10:08Of course.
10:09I am so fortunate to be surrounded by amazing, talented, creative individuals
10:14and I feel so blessed to share the love of my culture and traditions with my friends.
10:19To see others owning their culture and really celebrating it in so many different ways
10:24makes me want to continue to push the boundaries, change stereotypes and teach others about a culture
10:30that I find so much beauty in.
