00:00Hi apartment, I'm saving for you.
00:04Hi guys, my name is Anissa Richmond, I'm a supervising producer here at Refinery29
00:08and for this week's Try This Challenge, I am taking stock of my financial health.
00:13Stock is a pun, on purpose, because it's about money.
00:16My new phone service, Revisible, is super helpful because it's only $40 a month,
00:20every month, with no hidden fees.
00:22And it has unlimited data with no annual contracts.
00:26For this challenge, I have two goals.
00:28Goal number one is to just save more in general.
00:31Goal number two is to save specifically so that I can move into a one-bedroom apartment
00:35by myself at the end of summer.
00:38Right now I live in a studio, which is lovely, but I want a little bit more space.
00:41So we'll see if this challenge can get me there.
00:43To start the challenge, I'm teaming up with a financial advisor named Berna,
00:47who's going to provide me with some money-saving tips.
00:50Each day I'll take on a different tip with the hope of setting up some money-saving habits.
00:55I'm going to go hop on a video chat with her, and I will let you guys know how it
00:59goes.
01:00So I need like five tips to get me through the week that in theory I'd be able to take
01:05into the rest of my life that can help me save, be an adult,
01:10not spend all of my money on shoes and unnecessary shopping.
01:14What I try to do with budgeting is that you should treat yourself,
01:18but give yourself rules as to how much you can treat yourself every week.
01:22So one thing that you can trust week is something that I call the envelope method.
01:26So you can challenge yourself to say, let's say you want to give yourself a number,
01:31like $200 for fun money to spend.
01:33What you do is you cash out $200 in paper, actual cash,
01:37and from those $200, you kind of budget out, okay, I'm going to put $70 in drinks with friends
01:43and categories and things that you're wanting to spend.
01:45So I just got off the phone with Berna, and one, I'm obsessed with her,
01:48and two, I think I can do this.
01:50Her first tip is all about the envelope method.
01:53So what this means is taking a look at your paycheck
01:55and first spending everything on the things you actually have to pay for,
01:59like your rent, your phone service, and for me, I have Visible,
02:02so it's $40 a month, it's $40 every month, never have to worry about that.
02:06Once you've paid for all of those things, you can take a look at what's left
02:09and pull out what will be your fun money for the rest of the month.
02:13And the envelope method is about taking that money
02:15and physically putting it into envelopes
02:16and labeling them with what you want to spend it on.
02:19This is $200, and here are my fun money envelopes.
02:26Snacks for any food, drinks on drinks,
02:29for what I want to go out for, any beverages with my friends,
02:33cute ensembles, any event that I want to buy,
02:35I don't know, like an outfit or some sort of accessory.
02:39And then lastly is TBD, and this will be the only money,
02:42the only fun money that I spend throughout my week in this challenge.
02:49It is day two!
02:50Day one went great, the envelope tip was really great for me
02:53and kind of fun to do.
02:55But today it's all about grocery goals.
02:57Have you heard of the meal prep, the meal prep movement?
03:01Yes!
03:02All meal prep is, is like consciously cooking for yourself.
03:05And you plan those things out so that you have breakfast set,
03:09you have lunch set.
03:10That's like $20, $25 that you're saving every single day
03:13that you're not spending in lunch.
03:14I do tend to order in lunch a lot
03:16or go out to dinner with my friends,
03:18so this is a great way for me to streamline my life
03:20and also simplify my spending.
03:22We've made it to the grocery store.
03:24The plan is to buy at least enough groceries
03:27to last me for the week, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
03:30So let's see what I can find.
03:38Meal prep success.
03:39This is a ground turkey and sweet potato
03:42and onion and garlic mixture
03:43that I'm going to stuff in these bell peppers.
03:45I also set aside some of the sweet potato for lunch.
03:49I'm going to cook up those chickpeas.
03:51I made this tomato salad.
03:53So overall, just a meal prep queen.
03:58It is day three and today it's all about wallet dissection.
04:02How do you feel about your wallet?
04:04What's in there?
04:05What's it like?
04:05Does it spark joy?
04:07My wallet's cute, but it's full of crap.
04:09I love the sort of mindset where if my room is messy,
04:13my life feels messy, right?
04:14And so it's the same situation with your financial life.
04:16If your wallet is messy, then your money life will feel messy.
04:19So what you want to go for is to clean out the receipts,
04:23clean out the gift cards and the shopping,
04:27and only carry the absolute essentials.
04:29I'm going to just leave one credit card and one debit card.
04:32And the hope is that this will help me kind of streamline my life
04:36and streamline my spending.
04:39It is day four of our challenge,
04:42and I am still alive, still thriving.
04:44Last night, I cooked up some food, I meal prepped,
04:46and I actually have enough to get me into the weekend
04:48past our challenge, which is a win for all.
04:52And today's learning from Berta is all about phone tricks.
04:54There are things you can do with your phone
04:56to make it so that you're basically
04:57more financially conscious without doing a ton.
05:00So if you have a financial home,
05:02like it sounds like you want, you want to have a studio,
05:04you want to save for a one bedroom apartment, right?
05:06Mm-hmm.
05:07Your goal is to save for a one bedroom apartment.
05:09If you could find your dream and make that your phone background.
05:12Oh.
05:13Seeing your financial goal every single day,
05:16it's something actually that psychologists call unconscious monitoring.
05:19Mm-hmm.
05:19You see it every single day, you think of it all the time,
05:22and unconsciously you'll start to have sort of like tiny changes
05:25to your behaviors and your thoughts to move towards that goal.
05:28I found the perfect background to change my phone to.
05:31It is an adorable little apartment, and it will be my motivation.
05:37Tonight, I'm going out for drinks with my coworkers.
05:39I do have some money in the budget for drinks,
05:42but we're hoping that I'm not going to go over.
05:44So I just had drinks with my friends.
05:46I actually ran out of my fun money, and I thought I was going to have to switch to water.
05:51For my friends, I ended up actually buying me a cocktail.
05:54So my fun money lasted me until it didn't, but I did not overspend.
05:58This is a success.
05:59Final tip.
06:00I call it finding your budget bae, or your budget boo, or your money mate.
06:05Ooh.
06:06I believe that money is so stressful because we take it on for ourselves.
06:09It's very isolating.
06:11It's very me, me, me.
06:12It's my problems.
06:12A really, really good way to sort of open up your money brain is to let somebody in
06:16and recruit someone who is just your partner in money.
06:20This is just someone who, they don't need to be an advisor to you.
06:22They're just there to witness your good and bad money moments and like just be a mirror to that.
06:27Yeah.
06:27So it's not so much financial advice.
06:31It's like financial motivation.
06:32I've selected my little sister, Samantha, as my budget boo.
06:35I think she's going to be a great person for me to be able to kind of be honest and
06:39real
06:39about my spending and also give me a little bit of snaps and props when I'm doing well.
06:44I'm going to use visible to video chat with my sister to see if she'll be my budget bae.
06:51Seasters!
06:52You my budget bae.
06:54I'm the budget bae.
06:55I've selected you.
06:56You've been chosen.
06:57Basically, you're going to be the person that's supposed to like hold me accountable in
07:00my choices as I spend.
07:03Do you have any encouraging words right now?
07:05Yeah, like you can do it.
07:08Save, save, save.
07:09Yeah.
07:09And I could be your budget bae.
07:11You know, I could help you save and be smart financially, young grasshopper.
07:16That I need.
07:17I need help with that.
07:18I can do that now.
07:19I've learned some things.
07:20I've learned a lot of things actually.
07:22Great.
07:23This challenge has been a little hard, but I think what's been the best thing is that
07:28I've been able to kind of learn some things that I'm going to be able to put into my life
07:31even after the challenge is done.
07:33I very much want to make myself more of a saver.
07:35And I think that I've learned a little bit of tips and tricks along the way.
07:39Visible has been a great partner for this challenge because I've never been surprised
07:43with any hidden fees.
07:44It's $40 a month flat every single time.
07:47And it's been a great way for me to know that I'm set on that side so I can focus
07:51on saving
07:51in other areas.
07:52At first, this challenge seemed very daunting.
07:55Savings can seem like a difficult thing, but I learned a lot of tips and tricks that
07:59I think that I can take into my regular life.
08:01See you guys next time.
