The common swift is an absolute marvel of the natural world. Scientists discovered that these small birds can stay airborne for ten months straight without ever touching the ground. They eat, mate, and even sleep while soaring high in the sky during their long migration between Europe and Africa.

To sleep while flying, swifts use a special ability called unihemispheric slow wave sleep. They turn off one half of their brain at a time while keeping the other half awake to navigate and stay in the air. By gliding on high altitude wind currents, they conserve energy and remain safe from ground predators.

Researchers tracked these birds using tiny data loggers attached to their backs. The tracking proved that some individual swifts stayed continuously airborne for almost an entire year. It remains one of the most incredible endurance records in the entire animal kingdom.
