Deep within the Pacific Northwest rainforests of British Columbia, a unique population of grey wolves lives a completely marine lifestyle. Known as sea wolves or coastal wolves, these incredible predators get up to ninety percent of their food directly from the ocean. Instead of chasing deer through the forest, they swim for miles between islands in search of marine prey.

Scientists have documented these coastal wolves hunting salmon, seals, and sea otters. Surprisingly, when dead whales wash ashore, entire packs gather to feed on the massive carcass. These apex predators have adapted so well to their environment that they can swim continuously for hours in freezing ocean waters.

DNA testing reveals that these sea wolves are genetically distinct from inland grey wolves. Their unique diet and swimming habits show how adaptable wild predators can be when surviving in harsh coastal ecosystems.
