Whether you're all about the return of the gladiator or you'd rather eat paste than embrace the trend, we can all agree that these sandals are not the easiest thing to wear. Lacing them too tightly can cut off circulation; lace them too loose, and they unravel nearly immediately. (If we could count the number of times we've sent a shoe flying across the pavement, laces fluttering in the air...) Many gladiator sandals come with a zipper along the back to prevent this problem, but most local, handmade versions are just soles and laces. If centuries' worth of humans have been wearing these without much struggle, you should be able to, too. Above, we're showing off two tying techniques to keep the sandals from falling down your legs — or, conversely, stopping blood flow to your feet. Here's the trick to keeping it up without tripping up.

00:00You've seen these before. These are gladiator sandals and they're kind of
00:03controversial because sometimes they can look really great and then sometimes they
00:06can look really awful on people and the difference between those two is actually
00:10in how you tie them. I'm going to show you two correct ways to tie them that not
00:13only stay on all day but they also make your legs really good. Here's how you do
00:17it. The biggest mistake that people make when they tie their gladiator sandals is
00:20that they just wrap it around their leg and stop whenever the string runs up
00:24which is usually the absolute middle part of your leg. Not only is it not
00:27going to stay up but it's also going to cut your leg off at a really weird place
00:31so you look really stumpy. Don't do that. So the simplest way to do it is to keep all
00:35of the wraps below your calf muscle. So one strap goes clockwise and the other one
00:39goes counterclockwise and then you just tie into a knot. If it's secure you're
00:43good to go. The second way to do this goes all the way up your leg right under
00:46your knee. So you want to make as few revolutions as possible. In this case I
00:50can make about one and a half. In this way it elongates your leg but also sits
00:55right on top of your calf muscle so it does not move. And there you have it. Two
00:58different ways to tie your gladiator sandals and both of them stay up and
01:01make your legs look great. Watch.
