00:03Hi, everyone. It's Taylor with Refinery29. With all the different options for curling
00:07irons out on the market, it can be a little tough to choose the one that's right for you.
00:10So today, I'm going to show you a couple of options, as well as teach you some tips and
00:14tricks for basic curling techniques. So how do you know which curling iron is the best
00:19one for you? Well, the traditional barrel with a clamp on it is going to give you a
00:22more natural wave, but it's also going to be a little bit more damaging to your hair
00:26since you're singeing the ends of your hair into the clamp. The clampless irons are going
00:31to give you a better hold that's going to last longer since they're usually higher heat,
00:34but they can be a little tricky to use since you don't have anything to hold your hair in
00:38place and you have to rely on your hand. So today, I'm going to show you how both of them
00:42work, as well as give you a couple of tips to achieve the perfect curl. The best advice
00:46I can give is to work in small sections of your hair. You're going to get a better curl
00:50that's going to last longer. A lot of people make the problem of being overzealous when
00:53they're curling their hair, and they take large chunks and the curl doesn't end up
00:57lasting all day long. So starting with the clampless curling iron, we're going to go
01:01above the head. This is actually going to give us a more natural curl by working over
01:06our head. Since there's nothing holding the hair to the iron, we're going to have to work
01:10with both of our hands on this. So I'm just going to take the hair and hold the iron close
01:14to the head, and now we're going to wrap it around the barrel. You're going to want to
01:19hold it here and just hang on to the ends of your hair so that they don't get singed.
01:24This is why this is a little bit healthier for your hair. You're not ruining the ends
01:27of your hair. And then we're just going to let it go, and you end up with a really great
01:31natural curl. One of the reasons I really like the clampless barrel is that you get a
01:36more natural wave because the ends aren't stuck into the barrel. This means that they're
01:41not going to curl around like a ringlet, and they're going to be a little bit straighter
01:44and more beachier almost at the ends. So, using the clamp curling iron, which is one
01:50you're probably all used to, we're going to take a piece of the hair, not burning ourselves.
01:58There's a couple different ways that you can use these. One's a little bit healthier for
02:03the hair than the other, and I'm going to show you both of them. But this is the traditional
02:06way to use one. You're going to want to curl away from your head. So going all the way to
02:10the bottom. See how the hair is curling away from my face? And this is just going to be
02:23a looser, relaxed curl. The second way to use the traditional curling iron so that it's more
02:29like a clampless curling iron is to grab a chunk of the hair. I like to go a little bit
02:36up and flip the hair around the base, and then wind it around. You're going to want to be
02:45really careful with this that you don't burn your hair and hang on to the ends of the pieces
02:49like this. This is going to give you that really, really loose curl that you see in Victoria's
02:54Secret catalogs a lot. Then you're just going to let go, and you're left with just this very
03:02pretty loose curl, as opposed to the stiffer, more defined curl that we get from the clam
03:07barrel. So hopefully you learned some tips and tricks for how to get the perfect curl,
03:11as well as the right curling tool for you.
