00:01This summer I had a chance to walk with Ray Romano, you know, and it's the 30th anniversary of the
00:10premiere of Everybody Loves Raymond.
00:13This walk, of course, is brought to you by Body Armor, you know, it's been hydrating my walks since the
00:21beginning.
00:22So, let's catch up with Ray Romano and see what he's up to these days.
00:30It's time for Frank Walsh. Frank talks while Frank walks. It's time for Frank Walsh.
00:40All right, Raymond. Yes, sir. Thank you for joining us. My pleasure.
00:44You know, it's hard to believe. 30 years. 30 years this fall.
00:51That we started. You're talking about Raymond. Yes.
00:55Yeah. It is hard to believe. And I'm a grandpa now, too.
01:00That's hard to believe.
01:01I mean, now, every year you come out here to the American Century.
01:05Yes.
01:05And it's beautiful out here. You get to show everyone that...
01:09That I suck.
01:12I mean, come on. You outplayed some of the pros.
01:15That's why I come, you know. I'm never going to...
01:18Of course, I'm never going to be in the top half, but I am going to beat 20 to 30
01:22guys,
01:24and 10 of them are going to be world-class athletes.
01:27That's the beauty of golf.
01:29I mean, that's... I mean, golf's a great equalizer.
01:32Yes, it is. The great equalizer.
01:33I mean, Charles Barkley, I mean...
01:35Yeah, well, Barkley used to... I mean, you know, I remember when he was a seven handicap here.
01:41And then that thing, you know, with the hitch.
01:44But he's coming around. He's getting better.
01:46Hey, you know, anything could happen.
01:49I bet him last year, I bet him they have at the casino if he comes in the top 65
01:56or something.
01:57And I bet him. And he went... He had a great first day.
02:01He was in, like, 20th place.
02:03But he didn't make it. The next two days didn't go well.
02:07Now, of course, you're a big sports fan.
02:10Yes.
02:11Now, you're actually a Yankee fan.
02:13Grew up a Yankee fan, a Jet fan.
02:16Well...
02:16And a Knicks fan, of course.
02:18Well, now one of those seasons, now we're going to destroy.
02:21The Knicks did it. Let's go.
02:23I mean...
02:25I think that might be one of the greatest playoff runs of all time.
02:29I had... Did you have any hope in them?
02:31Because I had... I had a little bit of hope.
02:33When they started winning by 30 points, you know, back to back in this,
02:38that even though they were not playing in the toughest division,
02:42I still said there's something going on here.
02:44There were three moments where, and two of them were in the finals,
02:47but when they had that big comeback against Cleveland,
02:50I knew that series was over right then and there.
02:54Yeah, well, that series, yeah. We knew that series was over, yeah.
02:56And I think they just got the right matchup.
02:59The Spurs, you know, they might be a dynasty in a building.
03:02When do you know how good he's going to be if he stops being such a punk?
03:06Yeah.
03:07But...
03:08Well, they do look like a dynasty in the making.
03:12They do look like a dynasty in the making,
03:13but they celebrated too much when they won the West, I think.
03:16Yeah.
03:17And I think the Knicks just had that right attitude, the right heart.
03:21Watch your back.
03:22The right heart.
03:24And just the way they just kept coming back.
03:26Those fourth quarters were amazing.
03:28Yeah.
03:29You know, you can say a lot about just building people with championship pedigrees.
03:34Yeah, I went to one game.
03:35I'm afraid to admit this.
03:38I went to the game.
03:39They only lost...
03:40Did they only lose two games in the playoff run or...?
03:43They lost three games.
03:44They lost twice to the Hawks.
03:45Right.
03:46And then they lost the game, game three of the finals.
03:49Right, but they won...
03:49And then they won...
03:50But they won six, right?
03:51They won 16-3, I guess?
03:53Yeah, 16-3.
03:53Yeah, I went to one of the losses.
03:55I was at the Atlanta loss in New York.
03:57Yeah.
03:59Real quick, guys.
03:59Do you guys want to go this way really quick?
04:01Whatever you...
04:01Yeah, if you think so.
04:03Better light, yeah.
04:04Yeah, better light.
04:04Okay.
04:05All right.
04:06But...
04:07Let me ask you a question.
04:08I know, of course, you're a Mets fan.
04:12Do you then not like the Yankees?
04:15I'm not one of those guys that actually hate the Yankees.
04:17Right, right.
04:18I don't like the Yankees.
04:21I could care less about the Yankees.
04:23But you don't openly hate them, brother.
04:25No, there are Mets fans who just see the Yankees
04:28and they're frothing.
04:29But let me ask you this.
04:30There are teams I hate more than the Yankees.
04:32If the Mets are out of the playoffs
04:35and the Yankees are in,
04:36will you hope they win?
04:39Not really.
04:40So you don't keep the New York thing going?
04:42It's just your home team.
04:43But if they play like the Braves, the Phillies.
04:47Yeah.
04:47If they play the Dodgers.
04:50Right.
04:50I'd move for the Yankees.
04:52See, since I moved out of New York,
04:54you know, I grew up in New York,
04:55and when I was 38,
04:56I had to move to L.A. for the TV show.
04:59And since I live there now,
05:01I was like you, but I was a Yankee fan.
05:04And then, of course,
05:04you're supposed to not like the Mets.
05:05But now that I'm out of New York,
05:07I move for anything New York.
05:10This guy's going to beat the Jets.
05:12That's what we don't like.
05:13He's a great guy,
05:15but we don't like him.
05:16Yes, you've got to come out
05:17and try to walk one of these days.
05:18I see you guys doing one.
05:19Yes.
05:20We'll have to try to make it happen this year.
05:21Yeah.
05:22Yes.
05:22Well, I think I have your numbers along.
05:24Just text me.
05:25Are you counting for them?
05:26Yeah, I'll see you.
05:27You know, you're related.
05:28All right, beautiful.
05:29Nice.
05:30All right, see you guys.
05:31Yeah.
05:32But, yeah, the New York sports,
05:34I really love the passion in New York.
05:37Oh, of course, yeah.
05:39You know, I had the Mets on,
05:40I had the 69 Mets on Raymond,
05:42on Everybody Loves Raymond.
05:43Oh, I love that episode.
05:44Yeah.
05:44I love that episode.
05:46We got everybody but Seaver.
05:48We couldn't get Seaver.
05:49I don't know why.
05:50He held out.
05:52Well, yeah, he had higher standards,
05:55let's just say.
05:56Yeah.
05:57High price.
05:58He would have done Seinfeld
05:59at the time, probably.
06:00I'm not sure you would have done Seinfeld either.
06:02Yeah.
06:03I did get to meet him, though.
06:04I had a Met game later on,
06:06a couple years later,
06:08and they asked me to come in the booth
06:09and I sat with him for an inning.
06:11But that was a great episode.
06:12I mean, and Art Shamsky,
06:14of course, you named the dog Shamsky.
06:17Yes, and like I said,
06:19I grew up a Yankee fan,
06:19but when my father took us to Met games,
06:21I went to the game
06:24when they clinched the pennant in 69.
06:27Oh, against the Braves.
06:30Of course, you know who it was.
06:32And we got to run on the field.
06:34You know, I was 12.
06:36You know, I was 12 years old.
06:37They swept the Braves,
06:39and that was the first ever NLCS.
06:41They swept the Braves,
06:42despite Hank Aaron hitting a home run every game.
06:46Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:47That was great.
06:48That was a great time.
06:49I was in New York, 69.
06:51That was the Jets and the Knicks, right?
06:53The Jets and the Knicks.
06:54I mean, the Jets,
06:56I'm a Dolphins fan,
06:57and I think we're going to be fighting out
06:59for the number one pick,
07:00the March to Arch.
07:01How did that happen?
07:02How did you become the Dolphins?
07:03You know, it's a funny thing,
07:06is when I was a really little kid,
07:09I liked to show Flipper.
07:12And then I see this football team
07:14that has a Dolphin on their helmets
07:16with these,
07:18and my favorite color has always been aqua.
07:20Aqua and teal have always been my favorite color.
07:22And they have aqua and orange
07:24with this dolphin on the logo.
07:27And all of a sudden,
07:29they were making these plays,
07:31and they played the Jets in the mud game,
07:35the mud ball.
07:35So were you a fan when they went undefeated?
07:39I wasn't born yet.
07:41Oh, you weren't born yet.
07:41I wasn't born yet,
07:42but I love that team.
07:43I love that team.
07:44I wish I could do that.
07:46If I had a time machine,
07:47I think I'd go spend a year in 1972
07:49just to watch that undefeated team.
07:53Let's see.
07:53If I had a time machine,
07:54what year would I go to?
07:57Hmm.
07:5969.
07:59I was 12 years old,
08:02learning how to masturbate.
08:03Can I say that?
08:05The Jets, Mets, and Knicks won.
08:07It's all great!
08:1169.
08:12When were you born?
08:131975.
08:15Wow, I think I graduated high school then.
08:21Yeah, I graduated high school.
08:22I got my first girlfriend.
08:2476.
08:26And then she dumped me in the 77.
08:29I was born a couple days
08:30after the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
08:34That's funny.
08:35That's a funny landmark, you remember?
08:38Yeah.
08:38Great song.
08:39I'm playing with Robert Sala tomorrow.
08:43You know, you just get randomly put.
08:45Well, he's now coaching the Titans.
08:47Yes.
08:48But he was the Jets.
08:49I loved him on the Jets.
08:51And then, of course,
08:53things bad happened.
08:55Now, what else do you have work going on?
08:58I know you do the
08:59World Series of Poker every now and then.
09:01Yeah, I haven't done that in a while.
09:02I'm still, you know,
09:04I'm still doing stand-up,
09:05and we're doing Ice Age 6,
09:08believe it or not.
09:08Ice Age 6.
09:10You mean, they haven't done yet?
09:12The real Ice Age didn't last this long.
09:16We get it.
09:17The squirrel can't find the goddamn nut.
09:20We're doing number 6.
09:22Yeah.
09:22You know, the squirrel looking for a nut
09:24is like David Stern's trying to figure out
09:26how to replace Pete Alonzo.
09:28Yeah, yeah.
09:31There's going to be two Ice Ages
09:33before the Mets actually figure it out.
09:36But thank you for joining.
09:37This was good.
09:39A lot of fun.
09:40We got our steps in.
09:41Yes, you did.
09:42This is how we do it.
09:43Thanks.
09:43Thanks a lot.
09:44Appreciate it, man.
09:44All right.
09:45Fix it in post.
09:46He dreams.
09:46He dreams.
09:46He dreams.
09:47He dreams.
09:48He dreams.
09:49He dreams.
