00:00Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most amusing moments from Avatar The Last
00:05Airbender.
00:06That's not what I'm like, and I'm not a woman!
00:11Oh, they nailed you, Twinkle Toes!
00:15Number 20. Pants are an illusion.
00:17Oh no. Sokka, do you think the fog will delay the invasion?
00:22No. That is the invasion.
00:25Resisting the Fire Nation brings some unlikely allies together from all over the world.
00:30In preparation for the invasion, a ragtag group gets together, bringing plenty of clashing personalities.
00:35Were you able to locate everyone I told you to find?
00:38I did. But I'm a little worried, Sokka. Some of these men aren't exactly the warrior type.
00:43Perhaps the most unusual of these are the Foggy Swap Tribe Waterbenders.
00:47They don't exactly make the best first impression on their Southern Water Tribe cousins,
00:51with Dew mistaking a rock for a Fire Nation trap.
00:54Bato is more critical of their wardrobe.
00:56Hew's mystical declaration is what has us in stitches though.
01:00Pants are an illusion.
01:02And so is death.
01:04Such wisdom.
01:05Number 19. Sokka's Haiku Battle.
01:07There are several standout moments of Team Avatar stay in Ba Sing Se.
01:11But perhaps the funniest incident is when Sokka stumbles literally into a poetry class.
01:16While apologizing for the intrusion, he accidentally makes a haiku.
01:19I am so sorry.
01:22Something struck me in the rear.
01:24I just wound up here.
01:29He ends up in an impromptu slam poetry session with the instructor,
01:33with her fancier haikus being met with Sokka's decidedly more comedic and simple efforts.
01:38You think you're so smart with your fancy little words?
01:41This is not so hard.
01:45Whole seasons are spent mastering the form, the style.
01:50None calls it easy.
01:51I calls it easy.
01:53Like I paddle my canoe, I'll paddle yours too.
01:56His confidence in his performance and his jokes increase as the scene goes on,
02:00particularly in light of his pretty and willing audience.
02:03Sadly for him, his enthusiasm costs him in the end.
02:07That's right, I'm Sokka.
02:08It's pronounced with an aca.
02:10Young ladies, I rocked ya!
02:21Uh, that's one too many syllables there, bub.
02:25Our joy continues, unlike Sokka's career, in poetry.
02:29Yes, haikus are hard.
02:31Number 18.
02:32The Fire Family.
02:33Picking fights on your second day?
02:35We need to have a conference to discuss your punishment.
02:38Bring your parents to my office after school.
02:40Parents?
02:41Aang's attempts at attending a Fire Nation school and influencing the next generation of
02:45the country proves challenging.
02:47Particularly when the teacher and the resident's schoolyard jerk are against him.
02:50Enter Sokka and Katara.
02:52Thank you for coming, Mr. and Mrs.
02:55Fire!
02:56Wang Fire!
02:57This is my wife, Sapphire.
03:00Sapphire Fire, nice to meet you.
03:02Naturally, Sokka steals the show by wearing a fake beard and coming up with absurd aliases.
03:07But Katara rolling with it and pretending to be pregnant is pretty funny too.
03:11Wang Fire scolding his son is the hilarious capper to the whole escapade.
03:16I'll straighten this boy out something fierce!
03:18Young man, as soon as we get home, you're gonna get the punishment of a lifetime!
03:22That's what I like to hear.
03:24Number 17.
03:25Aang goes to jail.
03:27Not everybody's on board with the Avatar.
03:29Case in point, when the group goes to Chin Village, where Aang is arrested for a previous Avatar's
03:34supposed crimes.
03:35I need you guys to help prove my innocence.
03:38How are we gonna do that?
03:39The crime happened over 300 years ago.
03:42That's okay, Sokka.
03:43For some reason, I thought you were an expert detective.
03:47Well, I guess I could be classified as such.
03:50Aang mocking Sokka while also asking for his help in figuring out the truth is a funny bit to open
03:55on.
03:56However, it's even funnier when the young Avatar meets his fellow prisoners.
03:59You got a bald head?
04:01Some nice tattoos?
04:05You're going to fit in real well around here.
04:09While they come off as hardened, scary criminals, they prove surprisingly nice,
04:13giving Aang dating advice and getting emotional while discussing feelings.
04:16You really can't judge a book by its cover. Or an inmate by their tattoos, as the case may be.
04:21Hey, you're smart, handsome, funny. Not to mention you're the Avatar.
04:27You guys are great.
04:29Don't be afraid to tell her how you feel.
04:32Number 16.
04:33Sokka vs. Fortune Telling.
04:34Okay, let's get this over with.
04:36Your future is full of struggle and anguish.
04:40Most of it self-inflicted.
04:43But you didn't read my palms or anything.
04:45I don't need to.
04:47When Team Avatar arrives in a village that relies on the fortune telling of Aunt Wu,
04:51Sokka is skeptical at best.
04:53The whole episode is loaded with hilarious moments.
04:56From Sokka's disappointing yet accurate fortune that he will suffer from self-inflicted hardships,
05:00to his increasing exasperation with the town's rejection of reason and science.
05:04Look, can your fortune telling explain that?
05:10Can your science explain why it rains?
05:13Yes, yes it can!
05:16Sokka is left unsatisfied and fuming as one villager after another remains unconvinced by logic even after a volcano erupts.
05:23As funny as it is to watch Sokka suffer because he's wrong,
05:26it's arguably even funnier when it's because he's right.
05:29Or thinks he is.
05:30My life will be calm and happy and joyful.
05:34Ow!
05:36That doesn't prove anything.
05:38Number 15.
05:39Team Avatar Plays Hot or Not.
05:41Who's this guy?
05:50An airbender.
05:51In the Avatar Aang film, the titular character discovers a second airbender frozen just like he was.
05:57After reuniting with his friends, the group discusses the ancient airbender's tattoos and how old he is.
06:02Toph has more important things on her mind.
06:04He smells good for an old guy.
06:06Ew!
06:07What?
06:07My senses tell me this guy is pretty attractive.
06:09Toph!
06:09Someone else confirm!
06:10Since she can't see him, she wants to know.
06:13While most of them are confused or grossed out, Zuko is willing to provide an answer.
06:17He's very attractive.
06:18Huh?
06:20What?
06:21He is.
06:22It's all in the bone structure.
06:23It's such a silly, hilarious conversation that shows that even if the gang has gotten older,
06:28they're only slightly more serious.
06:30Number 14.
06:31Bombay Birthday
06:32Sokka has had some ridiculous plans throughout the series,
06:35but he saves one of his most outlandish for the show's final hours.
06:39Attention crew, this is your captain speaking.
06:43Everyone please report to the Bombay immediately for hot cakes and sweet cream.
06:49We have a very special birthday to celebrate.
06:52Surprisingly, this works.
06:53This leads to some hysterical, awkward small talk between crew members,
06:57who are played by series creators Brian Konitzko and Michael Dante DiMartino.
07:02Hey, I'm Quinn Lee.
07:04I work up in communications.
07:06Oh, hi.
07:07I work down in the engine room.
07:09That's probably why we never met before.
07:11Big airship, you know?
07:13Huh?
07:13Huh?
07:14Yep.
07:14The cherry on top of this funny moment is the fact that another Fire Nation soldier
07:18declares how happy he is that the captain remembered his birthday,
07:22just before Sokka drops them all into the ocean.
07:25Somehow, we don't think that's the gift he wanted.
07:31Happy birthday.
07:33Number 13.
07:35The Boulder Isn't So Conflicted
07:37As someone who's mostly introduced to make Toph look awesome,
07:40the boulder could easily have been a forgettable and throwaway character.
07:44But that is not Avatar The Last Airbender's style.
07:46Listen up, hippo.
07:48You may be big, but you ain't bad.
07:51The boulder's gonna win this in a landslide.
07:55With just a few lines, the boulder goes from a fodder enemy
07:58to a memorable minor character who also has some depth.
08:02Boulder's comically exaggerated mannerisms are splendidly animated,
08:06as is the short fight that ensues between the muscular earthbender and the blind bandit.
08:10The boulder feels conflicted about fighting a young blind girl.
08:16Sounds to me like you're scared, boulder.
08:20The boulder's over his conflicted feelings,
08:23and now he's ready to bury you in a rock-a-latch.
08:27This whole encounter plays out like a comedic skit,
08:29one that showcases Toph's abilities and personality
08:31at the expense of the boulder's future offspring.
08:36FOOOOOOOP!
08:40Number 12.
08:41Sokka gets owned by the Kyoshi Warriors.
08:43The greatest attitude adjustments came with a healthy dose of humor.
08:48Team Avatar's first run-in with the Kyoshi Warriors does not bring out the best in Sokka,
08:52who shows off an ugly, misogynistic side.
08:54Who are you? Where are the men who ambushed us?
08:57There were no men. We ambushed you.
08:59Now tell us, who are you and what are you doing here?
09:02Wait a second, there's no way a bunch of girls took us down.
09:05Luckily, Suki proves to be the perfect person to teach Sokka the error of his ways.
09:09Good. Of course, I was going easy on you.
09:13Of course.
09:14Let's see if you can HANDLE THIS!
09:18Sokka's transformation into a Kyoshi Warrior is an important development for the character,
09:22even if Aang still manages to get a quick zinger in.
09:25Sokka and Suki would go on to form an unbreakable bond,
09:28something Zuko almost discovers first-hand.
09:31Well, hello!
09:34Uh, Zuko! Yes! Why would I be expecting anyone different?
09:38Number 11. The Nomads.
09:40Along their travels, Team Avatar crosses paths with quite a few unique personalities,
09:45and the Earth Kingdom Nomads are the most relaxed of the bunch.
09:48Don't fall in love with a traveling girl.
09:51She'll leave you broken, broken heart.
09:55Led by the well-meaning but frustratingly chippered Shong,
09:58the Nomads bring a touch of melody, optimism, and even an idea or two to Team Avatar's lives.
10:04Heh, you're worried too much about where you're going.
10:08You gotta focus less on the where and more on the going.
10:11In a stroke of genius, Avatar decides to stick the Nomads with Sokka,
10:15a combination that produces some gut-bustingly funny moments.
10:18While these Nomads don't show up again, except for a brief cameo in the Avatar Aang movie,
10:23they make the most of their one appearance on Avatar The Last Airbender.
10:26We've certainly never been able to get that Secret Tunnel song out of our heads.
10:30Secret tunnel! Secret tunnel!
10:35Through the mountains! Secret, secret, secret, secret tunnel! Yeah!
10:43Number 10, Zuko's Rehearsal. Super serious and often conflicted,
10:48Zuko does not have much time for comedy, which Avatar The Last Airbender uses to great comedic results.
10:53Fine. You caught me. I'm gonna rescue my dad. You happy now?
10:57I'm never happy.
10:59After turning over a new leaf, Zuko grew less prideful and proved willing to admit to his failings to join
11:04Team Avatar.
11:05I think it's time I joined your group and taught the Avatar firebending.
11:10An act of such vulnerability naturally required practice, so Zuko turned to a badger frog for guidance.
11:16It did not help much.
11:19Yeah, that's what I'd say too.
11:21Whether preparing to join his father and nation's enemy or while out on a date,
11:25Zuko brings a touch of awkwardness that's not only hilarious, but also makes The Firebender even more endearing.
11:31Didn't I say don't look?
11:33You're right, Zuko. I've seen that girl in here quite a lot. Seems to me she has quite a little
11:40crush on you.
11:41What?
11:42Thank you for the tea.
11:46When someone is as funny as Sokka, they can be physically immobilized and still bring the laughs.
12:03While hunting for meat, Sokka gets stuck in a hole and is left to helplessly wait to be rescued.
12:09Along with making an adorable friend, Sokka goes through an internal journey of self-discovery as the trapped hero grapples
12:15with his mortality.
12:17I admit it. You're cute.
12:21Okay, you convinced me.
12:23If I get out of this alive, it's a karmically correct vegetarian existence for me. No meat.
12:29Aang also gives Sokka's hair an impromptu makeover. This entire storyline is hilarious from beginning to end,
12:35with the final punchline leaving Sokka's newfound wisdom unshared with the rest of Team Avatar.
12:41The whole time I was in that hole, not knowing if I would live or die, it makes a man
12:46think about what's really important. I realize-
12:49Hey Katara, look what I can do!
12:54Number 8. Momo fights Appa.
12:56Avatar The Last Airbender takes several cues from anime, especially in the comedy department.
13:01You've got to take care of yourself. You can't go on like this.
13:06Therefore, it's only fitting that the show's most obvious homage to Japanese animation is also a laugh riot.
13:11With the day of the black sun quickly approaching,
13:14a nervous Aang decides to stay awake after suffering a string of revealing nightmares.
13:18How do you plan on doing that when you're not even wearing pants?
13:27This leads to some even weirder daydreams starring Momo, Appa, and a handy Guru Patik.
13:32Packed with references and impressively animated for what's essentially an extended skit,
13:37Aang's sleep-deprived mind gives birth to some comedy gold.
13:41Come on guys, we're all on the same side!
13:44Chakras, chakras! Everybody loves chakras! Chakras, chakras! Chakras every taste good! Yum!
13:54Number 7. Azula's awkward flirting
13:56For the most part, Azula is terrifying, but Avatar does humanize the Fire Nation princess during Season 3.
14:03You're jealous of me? But you're the most beautiful, smartest, perfect girl in the world!
14:09Well, you're right about all those things, but for some reason when I meet boys,
14:12they act as if I'm going to do something horrible to them.
14:15The Beach is an especially important episode, as it shows Azula's insecurities around people her age,
14:21particularly boys. Azula attempts to sweep Chan off his feet with some sharp lines and a fiery prophecy,
14:27but the princess is a bit inexperienced when it comes to flirting.
14:39Azula is a fantastic villain, but there is more to the character than just sadism and cruelty,
14:44and these brief flashes of awkward normalcy add a lot to the Firebender's appeal.
14:51We're the strongest couple in the entire world! We will dominate the Earth!
14:59Uh, I gotta go.
15:02Number 6. Foaming Mouth Guy
15:04Look, we're all fans of Aang and the Avatar in general,
15:07but if you're looking for his biggest fanboy, look no further than this nameless resident of Kyoshi Island.
15:20Among Aang's many admirers, no others are ever so excited that they start foaming at the mouth,
15:26let alone become famous for it. When Katara and Sokka come back to the village,
15:30Foaming Mouth Guy repeats his performance, only to be embarrassed when he realizes Aang isn't with them.
15:35Where's Aangie?
15:36He couldn't be here, Coco.
15:39I want to see Aangie!
15:51Finally, he cameos in the Avatar Aang movie, along with his child, showing that fandom can be a generational thing.
15:58The gag is repetitive, but it's so funny, it's no wonder the guy became one of the show's most enduring
16:03memes.
16:04Number 5. Zuko Commiserates
16:06Hey, can I talk to you for a second?
16:14So what's up?
16:16If someone was captured by the Fire Nation, where would they be taken?
16:20Speaking of memes, Zuko and Sokka's trip to the Boiling Rock prison leads to one of the show's most iconic.
16:26Making conversation on the airship proves difficult. Not that they don't try, but it's pretty awkward.
16:31Pretty clouds.
16:33Yeah. Fluffy.
16:39What?
16:40What? Oh, I didn't say anything.
16:43Eventually, they get around to discussing Zuko's defection from the Fire Nation and the people he left behind,
16:48including his uncle and girlfriend, Mei.
16:51Sokka tries to relate by telling Zuko about his own relationship woes,
16:55and Zuko's helpless reply is absolutely legendary.
16:58The number of memes this line has spawned could reach the moon and back.
17:02My first girlfriend turned into the moon.
17:05That's rough, buddy.
17:07Number 4. Sokka Trips On Cactus Juice
17:09Sokka is a comedy god, and the desert allows everyone to bask in the character's glory.
17:15After quenching their thirst with some cactus juice,
17:17Sokka and Momo go on a trip filled with mushrooms, moons, and vibrant colors.
17:22Drink cactus juice.
17:23It'll quench ya.
17:25Nothing's quenchier.
17:27It's the quenchiest!
17:29Okay, I think you've had enough.
17:32Who let Toph on fire?
17:33This could easily have been a single scene,
17:35but Avatar stretches out this plot development for an entire episode,
17:39and it is a great decision.
17:41While the visuals do change slightly on occasion,
17:43we're mostly left to imagine Sokka's hallucinations.
17:46Which pays off later on in the episode,
17:48when the joke keeps on coming back to trigger even more laughs.
17:51It's a giant mushroom.
17:55Maybe it's friendly!
17:56Number 3. The Ember Island Players
17:59When adapting a true story for the stage,
18:01some creative liberties are to be expected,
18:04as Team Avatar learns too well at the Ember Island Theater.
18:07Sokka, my only brother,
18:09we constantly roam these icy south pole seas,
18:12and yet never do we find anything fulfilling.
18:16The Ember Island Players put on a generally plot-faithful reenactment of
18:19Teen Avatar's adventures,
18:21while amplifying some less flattering traits of the key characters.
18:24Who are you, frozen boy?
18:28I'm the Avatar, silly! Here to spread joy and fun!
18:33Wait, is that a woman playing me?
18:35In the play, Sokka is turned into a starving comedic relief,
18:39Katara cannot stop talking about hope,
18:41Aang and Toph swap genders,
18:43Azula is shown in heroic light,
18:45and Zuko is mostly spot-on.
18:48The Ember Island Players put on one incredibly entertaining show.
18:52I don't have time to stuff my face!
18:53I must capture the Avatar to regain my honor!
18:57Well, while you do that, maybe I'll capture another slice!
19:02You sicken me!
19:04They make me look totally stiff and humorless.
19:07Number two, all of Toph's blind jokes.
19:10Everyone into the hole!
19:15It's so dark down here, I can't see a thing!
19:19Oh no, what a nightmare!
19:21Sorry.
19:21Toph Beifong can't see, but her earthbending abilities let her sense things more than most
19:26people without sight, or with it. In fact, her abilities are so exceptional that sometimes her
19:32friends forget she's blind. This leads to numerous instances throughout the show where Toph has to
19:36remind her sighted friends of her condition, or else they remember too late.
19:40And I suppose you don't think what you're doing is dangerous at all?
19:54The gags aren't mocking Toph's condition. Instead, they're mocking the rest of Team Avatar, who,
20:00despite being able to see, are all spectacularly unobservant and or forgetful.
20:05It's basically variations on the same joke, but Toph's dry sarcasm helps them land every time.
20:11There it is!
20:17That's what it will sound like when one of you spots it.
20:23If you love games, be sure to check out WatchMojo's new game, Terrible Influence,
20:28just launched for purchase at TerribleInfluence.com. Terrible Influence is a satirical board game
20:33about the dark side of fame from the writer of the most popular girls in school and us, WatchMojo.
20:38Boom! I can make an apology video.
20:41Oh, you so would!
20:42Click on the link in the description to check out the game and be the first to play Terrible Influence.
20:48Number 1. The Cabbage Merchant
20:50Misfortune can be funny, and few characters are quite as hilariously tragic as The Cabbage Merchant.
20:56Ah, my cabbages!
20:59Whenever the Earth Kingdom entrepreneur shows up hoping to sell some beautiful vegetables,
21:03the universe seems to conspire to ensure that his cart, cabbages, or both ends up in disarray.
21:11No! My cabbages!
21:13Avatar The Last Airbender is a consistently hilarious show,
21:16and this random recurring joke highlights the cartoon's talent for goofy but memorable gags.
21:21It serves as a testament to Avatar's excellence that a character with so little screen time
21:26or development can leave such a long-lasting impression.
21:29My cabbages! You're gonna pay for this!
21:32Is there an Avatar The Last Airbender joke that makes you enter the Avatar state of laughter?
21:36Avatar? Show us how blind we've been by sharing your picks in the comments!
21:40There have beブreeks!
21:40Turns out it over to us!
21:41F hurry!
