00:01As I mentioned before the movie, Rita Moreno played Guggie Gomez in the original Broadway
00:05production of The Ritz in 1975, one year before this film adaptation premiered. In her memoir,
00:12published in 2013, Moreno wrote that she threw herself into the role, with even more energy
00:17than usual, bringing down the bathhouse and winning a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress
00:22in a Play. Her Tony Award brought her one step closer to achieving one of the rarest
00:26feats in show business, winning all four of the top entertainment awards—an Emmy, Grammy,
00:32Oscar, and Tony. By 1975, she had already won an Oscar for playing Anita in West Side Story,
00:37and she had a Grammy for the 1972 children's album The Electric Company. As it turned out,
00:43she didn't have to wait long to achieve EGOT status. Two years after she won the Tony for
00:48The Ritz, Moreno won her Emmy—the first of two Emmys that she's received—for her performance
00:53on The Muppet Show. She became the first Latina and only the third person ever to reach that
00:58pinnacle. Up next, we're switching gears for a landmark film noir from 1946 starring Burt Lancaster
01:05and Ava Gardner. Next on TCM, The Killers, then Home from the Hill, and later, Field of Dreams. If TCM
01:16airs it,
01:16you will watch.
