00:00Now, they asked me to say a few thoughts myself about the B-52s, and I'll make it quick.
00:06I first fell in love with their music when I was working on one of my first radio gigs
00:11in America in San Luis Obispo, and it was called Z93, the Music FM, and I got to be
00:19program director there, and we were playing Christopher Cross and Toto and Journey, and
00:24then I put on Dance This Mess Around.
00:28And I remember the owner coming in and going, Richard, actually it was Dick at the time,
00:36but I had to change my name because it didn't sound too good on the radio.
00:41As Billy Gimble once said, B-J-Dick sounds like somebody you can't from a urinal in Studio
00:4654.
00:49So he's going in and he goes, what song was that you just played?
00:53I said, what, it's the B-52s, a new band out of Athens, Georgia.
00:57It's called Dance This Mess Around.
00:59I said, what, do you think it's put through the format?
01:01I said, look, we're a college town.
01:03This is Stan Lill's Obispo.
01:04The kids will love it.
01:07And they said, oh, I'm not sure about that.
01:08And he walked out and I thought, wait till he hears 52 girls in 10 minutes.
01:12But that was my introduction to the B-52s.
01:18And I just fell in love with them.
01:20And over the years, it didn't matter whether I was working at KMEC or K-Rock,
01:24I would play the B-52s.
01:26Oh, by the way, if you're local, go to New York.
01:30I would make sure they were played every two to three hours
01:34because they're just a part of any radio's play list.
01:38And when I do personal gigs, there's a few songs that I keep in my back pocket as a DJ
01:45just in case I start to lose the dance floor.
01:48One of them is from the press mode.
01:51One of them is from Softair.
01:53One's from The Cure.
01:54And two are from this band.
01:59And I just DJ'd a beautiful wedding in Malibu a few weeks ago.
02:05And normally at the end of a wedding, you know, wedding's six hours long,
02:09and people are like, oh, I want to sit down, I want to go home.
02:13The energy's going.
02:14So you finish the wedding with a slow song.
02:17Say the prayer from Duran Duran.
02:19Cruise from Spandau.
02:21In excess, never tears the part.
02:23Not this wedding.
02:24Now, Jeff and Leah were getting married.
02:29And let's see if his mic's on.
02:32Hello.
02:33Yes, it is on.
02:33Okay, good.
02:34Jeff and Leah are here today.
02:36So they flew into Northern California because they love you guys.
02:43So Jeff and Leah, what was the song you asked me to play as the final track at your wedding,
02:52when normally everyone's mellow now and this might be true?
02:56What was the song you wanted?
02:57It took me back to my college days in the early 80s, and it was Rock Lobster.
03:06It was a memorable way.
03:08And even though the people have been there for hours and hours and hours,
03:13the entire dance floor, filled with everyone from 17 to 70 years old,
03:19was going, dum-dum-dum-dum-dum-dum-dum-dum-dum-dum.
03:22Thanks to you.
03:23And thank you for helping my career.
03:26Because without you guys, I probably wouldn't have got a star and a walk of fame.
03:30B-52s have meant so much to me, and you deserve this so much.
03:34So thank you.
03:35All right.
03:36I think my time is up, and we need to bring someone else back up on stage.
03:44And that is Ron Frierson from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
03:49And Ron is going to make a special presentation right now on behalf of the city of LA.
03:55So if you want to call it, I can exist when I'm still.
