01:13And she is the eight-time Oscar nominee
01:16who gave children nightmares as Greta Deville
01:19and gave grown men nightmares as Bunny Boiler Alex in Fatal Attraction.
01:23Please welcome Kieran Culkin and Glenn Close!
01:29Hello!
01:31Hello!
01:33Hello!
01:35Hello!
01:36Hello!
01:36Hello!
01:37Hello!
01:38How do you think?
01:39Do you think?
01:39Yeah?
01:40Good, good, good.
01:40OK, great.
01:42Yeah.
01:44And reuniting with his fake-lux action co-star,
01:47he's the double Oscar-winning actor and producer
01:48of hits like Basic Instinct, Romancing the Stone,
01:51and the iconic Wall Street.
01:53His new memoir, One Hell of a Ride,
01:55tells the story of his remarkable life and career.
01:58It is the great Michael Douglas, everybody!
02:03It is so good!
02:06We're good to see you!
02:08Welcome back!
02:08Welcome back!
02:09Welcome back!
02:14Sit yourselves down!
02:17So, welcome back to everyone this week.
02:19I think you've all been on before.
02:20Lovely to see you all.
02:21Very nice.
02:22As I said, it's Halloween tomorrow.
02:25So, Naomi Aki, I don't know if it's too early to say
02:28happy birthday for November the 2nd.
02:32It's not my birthday!
02:33It's not my birthday!
02:33It's not my birthday!
02:34Right, I've got to put this straight.
02:36Since Star Wars, it went on Wikipedia that my birthday
02:39was November the 2nd, and I was like,
02:41it's not, it's August the 22nd.
02:44So then I then got someone who was good at computer stuff to change it.
02:49And someone keeps on going back and changing it back to November the 22nd.
02:54So I get two happy birthdays.
02:55They also said I was born in 19... 1992, which is...
03:01A 1991 baby.
03:02So I was kind of like, keep the...
03:04Keep the...
03:04Keep the one year.
03:05Keep the 1992, but change it to mind.
03:08But does November the 2nd have any relevance in your life at all?
03:11None.
03:11It's just a random...
03:12I have no idea what's going on.
03:14It's very weird.
03:16It's a committed...
03:17Yeah.
03:18A weird prank.
03:19Yeah.
03:19Yeah.
03:19Who are you?
03:23Now, often we do a kind of a, how do you know each other?
03:26Michael and Glenn, we know how you know each other.
03:29Yes.
03:30Very well.
03:30Quite intimately.
03:33Because it's 40 years.
03:35I mean, you know this.
03:36I know.
03:36You'd never know it, would you?
03:38No, you really wouldn't.
03:3940 years, wow.
03:40Not too late for a sequel.
03:43A prequel.
03:44A prequel.
03:44A prequel.
03:44Yeah, a prequel.
03:46But here's the thing.
03:47Uh, Glenn Close, we won't dwell, but you have been nominated eight times.
03:51Never won.
03:52But now.
03:53Next month.
03:54No, no.
03:55Next month.
03:56There was a bit of delivery in that.
03:58Next month.
03:58Next month, Glenn Close is getting her Oscar.
04:01CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
04:05It's amazing.
04:06I know.
04:08I kind of hate to break my losing streak.
04:12Have you got a very dusty speech?
04:16No, actually.
04:17Because every time I lost, I thought, ah, I don't think I could have accepted with a speech
04:23as lovely as the person who just won.
04:25Aww.
04:26You are a good actor.
04:28Yeah.
04:31They deserved it, really.
04:33And so you're getting a special one at a special occasion?
04:36Yes, the governor of the academy.
04:38They vote, um, to give honorary Oscars.
04:42And, uh, they probably don't want to feel guilty anymore.
04:45LAUGHTER
04:47Should have went with Fatal Attraction.
04:48She was nominated.
04:49That was in her fourth Fatal Attraction.
04:52Wow.
04:52She should have went.
04:53Yeah.
04:53Cher won that year.
04:55Was that for, uh, Moonstruck?
04:57Moonstruck.
04:57Oh, wow.
04:58I know.
04:59That's what we all said.
05:02LAUGHTER
05:05Well, no, I mean, I was only supporting you.
05:08He gave one of the greatest performances of all time and, you know.
05:12But Cher put some grey in her hair.
05:14So there you go.
05:15Now, Kieran, since you were last here, you, and take note, Glenn, one nomination, one win.
05:22Uh, well done.
05:23You got your Oscar for, um, a real thing.
05:26I didn't say it.
05:27He said it.
05:29LAUGHTER
05:29But, no, but there's an odd thing because you were...
05:32Yeah, great pick, by the way.
05:33There's not a better one?
05:34Why are you doing this?
05:36LAUGHTER
05:37LAUGHTER
05:38That's the...
05:38Yeah, I don't believe it either.
05:40You're wearing a certain feeling.
05:40Yeah, I feel like Cher.
05:42Exactly.
05:44Yeah, that's what we said.
05:45Yeah.
05:46But you were there when Glenn won a Golden Globe.
05:50Yes.
05:50I was actually, I don't think you know this, but we, my wife and I were sitting right behind you.
05:54And it was really sweet because you seemed genuinely surprised that your name was called.
06:00I felt like I knew you were going to win.
06:01I feel like the whole room did.
06:02But you, like, jumped up and the whole table stood up.
06:07We were applauding.
06:07You were going.
06:08And I look at my wife.
06:08She's sitting down.
06:09I go, stand up.
06:09And she goes, no, stand up.
06:11She goes, there's a guy standing on my dress.
06:14LAUGHTER
06:14And so she's like, oh, it's probably off camera.
06:16Don't worry.
06:17We watched it back.
06:17And she is clearly...
06:19LAUGHTER
06:21I'm not standing up for this, bitch.
06:26Not that impressed.
06:28Now, all right, let's get started tonight with Michael Douglas.
06:32His new autobiography is called One Hell of a Ride.
06:35I've got it here.
06:36And it is out right now.
06:39And I suppose the thing with...
06:40You must have been asked to write memoirs and books before at this point in time.
06:46Yeah, I had.
06:47So why did you cave?
06:49I'm 82.
06:52LAUGHTER
06:52No, I just thought it was probably time.
06:56I took a break.
06:58You know, Dad wrote about...
06:59Kirk wrote about nine books.
07:02He wrote a great autobiography.
07:04And so I started to think about legacies.
07:07You know, Dad and I together have got probably 135 movies over eight decades and all of that.
07:15Wow.
07:15And all three of my kids are actors now, too.
07:18But the real reason, my memory.
07:21I'd forgotten so much.
07:23And I reached a point in life now where I realize the only thing that matters is your friends, your
07:28family, and what you remember.
07:31So I am, you know, doing this whole exercise and process of going back starting in 1944 and finding whatever
07:39information I could about the family has been fabulous.
07:42So I've got a whole bunch of new memory thoughts to keep in my mind there for at least a
07:47day.
07:48But there is...
07:48No, but there is...
07:49But, Michael, there's so much detail in here.
07:53Like, it reads as a...
07:54You know, obviously it's a memoir.
07:55It's a story of your life.
07:56Right.
07:57But you do a great thing where you pick out certain films and you do a kind of deep dive
08:03into how they were made, the making of...
08:06Exactly.
08:06Ten pictures.
08:07How did you pick the ten?
08:08Um, well, the most well-known except one of them, Jewel of the Nile, was such a good example of
08:15what can go wrong as a producer.
08:17Um, that I thought was a really good example.
08:20But I took it from the beginning to the end.
08:21And that was the original idea, sort of a, uh, you know, just a workshop book for people who want
08:26to learn about producers.
08:27Yeah.
08:28But then every picture had sort of interesting private stories, you know, intertwine.
08:33Yes.
08:34And then the producer of me took over and I said, let's just go for the dirt.
08:40Some sense loves the rock and roll, you know.
08:44We'll get to the dirt in a minute.
08:45I just want to go back to the year, uh, 1987.
08:47And that was kind of the year when you feel like, you know, you moved out of your father's shadow
08:52and you won the Oscar for Wall Street.
08:54And it was also the year that, uh, you and Glenn made the highest grossing film of the year, Fatal
08:59Attraction.
09:00Yeah.
09:01Thank you, thank you, thank you.
09:04And...
09:06So, you, you, it's one of the movies you do a deep dive in, in the book.
09:10So, there's a bit, I don't know how much of this you know, Glenn.
09:13So, people didn't want Glenn Close to be in this film.
09:17Mm-mm.
09:17I say people, you.
09:19Well...
09:20LAUGHTER
09:23That's a great episode.
09:24We have somebody called the director and the producer.
09:27Nobody.
09:30Everybody thought that Glenn was not right, you know, for the, for the part.
09:34And so, we moved on, but her agent called and said, you understand, Glenn is going, will audition.
09:42Mm-hmm.
09:43Now, Glenn had already got three Oscar nominations for actors.
09:48You know, we said, we can't ask.
09:50And she said, she's insisting.
09:53And she came in, and I asked anybody to see this, this tape, and she blew us away.
10:00We have never been so wrong in our lives.
10:03I remember looking at each other and feeling like total idiots.
10:05She was in total command.
10:07And I forgot how close it was to the role when you actually, that scene that you did for the
10:12operation.
10:13Oh, that's right.
10:13Yeah, yeah.
10:13Can you be discreet?
10:15Yes, be discreet.
10:16Yeah.
10:16Yeah.
10:17But the interesting thing in the book, and probably a lot of people who know that movie don't know this,
10:22so, obviously a big hit, but the original ending, people, audiences didn't like the original ending.
10:28Oh, my God.
10:29I know about this.
10:30Yes, well, when I first read the script, it was a very film noir.
10:35It ended with, we had this fight, his finger piercer on the knife, and then I slit my throat to
10:44Madame Butterfly.
10:46You know?
10:47Oh, my God.
10:48And, great.
10:49And then he goes off to jail.
10:51Woo-hoo!
10:52Fabulous.
10:53Well, American audiences don't like that.
10:59I love that ending.
11:00I love that ending.
11:01They don't like that.
11:02And they did this long testing thing, which was kind of new.
11:06You know?
11:07It was...
11:07Testing, testing, testing.
11:09The audiences, Alex Flores, made them so angry that they came back six months after we had finished the movie
11:18and said, we're going to reshoot it.
11:20And I said, I'm not going to do it.
11:22My character, they wanted me to come in with a knife.
11:29They wanted me to attack the wife.
11:30I said, I'm not going to do it.
11:31She's not a psychopath.
11:32She's a pathetic, out-of-control woman.
11:37And I fought and fought and fought.
11:38So I'm going to tell this story.
11:40So I was in this meeting with Michael and Sherry Lansing and our other producer, Stanley Chaffee,
11:49and AJ and I said, I literally said, I'm not going to do it.
11:52I'm not going to fucking do it.
11:55How would you feel?
11:56How would you feel somebody's doing that to your character?
12:00And Michael kind of laid back and he said, babe, I'm a whore.
12:19And then I did say to her, I said, the truth was that you had blown everybody away.
12:27You were probably the greatest villain that had ever, ever lived.
12:31Well, I know she's not a villain.
12:34I love how you said she's not a psychopath as well.
12:36She boiled the money.
12:38Yeah, but she's not a psychopath.
12:41But why did she boil the money?
12:44Because she's a psychopath.
12:46No!
12:47Anyway, so she was fabulous.
12:49And we finally came around to it.
12:53And I know, and it was a beautiful ending.
12:56And Glenn was in her character.
12:58It made sense, but it didn't work for the whole movie because she'd been so good.
13:03The audience just wanted to kill the bitch.
13:06Me, me, or.
13:08Well, it was a great lesson because I think it was so upsetting to the audience that they needed a
13:14catharsis.
13:15And the easiest way to come to catharsis is blood.
13:19So give them my blood.
13:24Yeah, that is quite rough.
13:26And then they, you know, the last shot is going in on a picture of the nice little family.
13:32Yeah.
13:32But, OK, but.
13:33We could go home happy.
13:34I just feel like, when I watch it, I'm like, what happens afterwards?
13:39Because in my head, it's like, divorce, divorce, divorce.
13:43Yes.
13:44I mean, it's...
13:45Hard to bounce back.
13:45It's really hard to bounce back.
13:49Really hard.
13:50As you're wiping blood out of the ground and the tiles.
13:54We OK?
13:57I'm good.
13:59You're not going to do it again, are you?
14:02Don't make me do this again.
14:04Shoot a woman.
14:05And the other thing that struck me, of course, 40 years ago, there were no such things as intimacy coordinators
14:10or anything.
14:10So, was it the two of you working those scenes out?
14:14With our director?
14:16Yeah.
14:16With our director?
14:17Yeah.
14:17I knew how kinky our director was.
14:20Yeah.
14:20And I knew where my head was at.
14:23You were pretty kinky yourself.
14:25No, she was just like a healthy specialty.
14:28So, we had our first love scene, you know, we were showing in the kitchen.
14:35And Glenn and I'm picking Glenn up and I put her up on the sh...
14:38Up on the end.
14:41And we do it one time and it's pretty good.
14:44And Adrian, our...
14:47Our director, Adrian, you know, he's a wonderful, like, childlike quality.
14:51Like, I don't know what to do.
14:52Like, you want to help him.
14:53And so we said, well, that's your...
14:54Is there anything else I can think of?
14:56Anything else I'm thinking?
14:57And then he goes, well, how about...
14:58Glenn says, how about I put my hands back...
15:01The water.
15:01And I hit the water.
15:03The water.
15:04And there you go, that's good, that's good.
15:05That's good.
15:06And then I take the...
15:07I get my hands all wet.
15:09And I take the water and I wipe out of Michael's mouth.
15:11I stick my fingers in his mouth.
15:17This is so unseemly.
15:21And the director and I look at each other and said,
15:24we were worried about it.
15:28My addition to that scene only was when we saw the replay.
15:32I said, well, this is pretty, you know, hot.
15:34So sometimes you have to, you know, find a way to release it.
15:38So I said, how about then if I try to pick Glenn up
15:42and try to make it to the bed with my pants down?
15:46And it would just kind of laugh, you know,
15:48and kind of...
15:50He wasn't great.
15:50But Adrian didn't know.
15:51He kept putting it off, shooting the scene.
15:53Kept putting it off.
15:54He's brilliant at, you know, blocking.
15:57And it wasn't until he said, pigeons.
16:00Pigeons at the window.
16:01Now I'm ready to shoot the scene.
16:04Wait, look.
16:05We've got the still.
16:05Yeah, look.
16:07I noticed that pigeon.
16:08I was like, what the hell is that doing there?
16:11I guess he thought it was, you know, cool.
16:13So was that, that's a real, like, that pigeon just arrived
16:16or he ordered some pigeons?
16:19I guess they had a pigeon pen.
16:20OK.
16:21Wait, you're kidding.
16:22Do you have this, like, epiphany?
16:23Like, we have to have pigeons?
16:25Yes, it was pigeons.
16:25Yes, it was pigeons.
16:25That's incredible.
16:26As actors, you must have felt like, really?
16:28Like, we're having sex in his sink.
16:31And the pigeon's watching.
16:32There's something missing.
16:34I think the reason why it works so well
16:35is it's so awkward.
16:37Yeah.
16:37So it's passionate, but it's also funny.
16:40Yeah, yeah.
16:40And it, yeah, it was...
16:41Now, sex scenes in the book aren't all in front of the camera,
16:45Michael.
16:46Er, there's, er, there's...
16:48There's quite a lot.
16:50Explain.
16:51Well, when you wrote the book,
16:53were you surprised at the number of people?
16:56That we were good friends and then we were more than friends
17:00and we were many close friends?
17:03Yeah, I was.
17:06I was a little surprised.
17:08I mean, I try to use the example, like, you know,
17:11we're one of the few businesses, one of the earliest businesses
17:14where men and women are relatively equal.
17:16There were always needs for actresses and actors
17:18and we worked together.
17:20And my mother, I remember, was in the theatre
17:22and going to dressing rooms and seeing actors and actresses
17:26changing together.
17:27And we're just comfortable with each other.
17:30And sometimes that gets carried away.
17:34I'd say sometimes.
17:36LAUGHTER
17:38But all that ended.
17:39All that ended with the arrival of Wales' own Catherine Zutichoke.
17:43Oh!
17:44APPLAUSE
17:50She's been on the show a few times.
17:51She told us about, you know, when you met at the Deauville Film Festival.
17:55But there's another additional bit of the story in the book
17:58where you have that conversation about deciding,
18:01are you actual boyfriend and girlfriend?
18:03Well, what happens, I met her in Deauville
18:06and then we had a, what do you call it, I courted her,
18:10I guess is the right word, I courted her about a year and a half.
18:14Oh, wow.
18:14And you see, we hit it off.
18:17And then basically...
18:20And basically, so, but she said, look, you know,
18:23if we're going to do this, you've got to clean your act up
18:26and all of that.
18:27And I was, I was seeing some other people, you know.
18:31LAUGHTER
18:32I was recently, I had been divorced for a while,
18:35my first marriage and...
18:38What are you looking for?
18:40LAUGHTER
18:42And so I had to get on the phone call
18:45and call five ladies.
18:47LAUGHTER
18:49Well, I found you could be very honest
18:52as long as you were not seeing more than one person
18:54in the same town.
18:56LAUGHTER
18:57They were, they were, they knew that you were not,
19:00you know, you'd recently were divorced
19:01and you were not planning a series again.
19:04And when...
19:04But didn't you, haven't you dated more than one person
19:06at the same time?
19:07Never in my life.
19:09LAUGHTER
19:09You never dated more than one person?
19:11No.
19:12I wish I had, but I didn't.
19:15LAUGHTER
19:15I think it's an American thing, Michael.
19:16I think it might be an American.
19:18Is it?
19:18I think...
19:18I don't know.
19:19Kira, help me out here, maybe.
19:21I lost, I lost my voice.
19:24LAUGHTER
19:27Look, if you want lots of great stories like that,
19:29and I can say lots of movie stories,
19:31when Hell of a Ride is the name of the memoir,
19:34and it's out now.
19:35Michael Douglas, everybody!
19:37CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
19:40Thank you so much.
19:44All right.
19:45Glenn Close and Kieran Culkin bring us
19:49The Hunger Games, Sunrise on the Reaping.
19:52It is the latest instalment in the blockbuster
19:54dystopian franchise, and it opens in cinemas
19:56on the 20th of November.
19:59So, this is...
20:00It's a prequel to the original three films.
20:04Yes.
20:0425 years before the original,
20:06the first original.
20:0724.
20:0824?
20:09Just to be specific, yeah.
20:10Oh, stop.
20:11Is it?
20:1224, and then,
20:13because the next one is the 75th,
20:14Hunger Games the second.
20:15Ah, OK.
20:16So this is the 25th,
20:17or 50th, Hunger Games,
20:19in this one, so...
20:21It's fine.
20:22It's fine.
20:2325 is fine.
20:24Just cut that out.
20:24OK.
20:26So this is the 50th,
20:27uh, Hunger Games.
20:29Yes.
20:30Yes.
20:30No, no, no.
20:32It is!
20:33What's happening?
20:34No, in the...
20:35No, it's not...
20:36I'm right!
20:36No, this film, this film...
20:38Naima, you're a fan of the Hunger Games, aren't you?
20:40Yeah, I love them, yeah.
20:40OK, so you're all over this.
20:41Which number of Hunger Games is the 50th?
20:43Well, it's...
20:46It's the second quarter quill.
20:48Yes.
20:48So it's the second quarter.
20:49It's the 50th.
20:50OK, great.
20:51Why is everyone doubting me?
20:52Who do you play, Glenn?
20:53Let's go to easy questions.
20:55I Ray Drusilla Sickle, who's vile.
20:58Who is she?
21:00She's the escort of, uh, of District 12.
21:04She's the one that picks the names out.
21:06She's done it for 25 years.
21:08She hates them all.
21:09And, uh, she just does it to keep her position in the capital
21:13and to get another medal.
21:14Well, we've got a clip of you as Drusilla and, uh, you'll see,
21:18this is quite a transformation.
21:20This is Glenn Close.
21:21Oh, my God!
21:23That's incredible!
21:24It's incredible, isn't it?
21:27Is any of that you?
21:29Yes, it's mostly me.
21:31Yes, it's mostly me.
21:31The only prosthetic I have, because I wanted to have a pig nose,
21:34so to do that you have to pick your nose, no.
21:38You put your nose...
21:39We had surgical tape, and then I had to have a prosthetic
21:43to put over that so you didn't see the tape.
21:45Everything else, because in the book she's stretched to the nines,
21:48and so it was like this, um, all day and up, up, up, up, yeah.
21:54I think we've got a picture of the contraption that did it all.
21:57Yeah.
21:57So...
21:58Yeah, see, that was all the strings that they let me loose at,
22:03you know, when we were eating or something,
22:05and then they'd just string me up again.
22:08By the way, there was one day that you showed up
22:10and you did all...
22:11I don't know how many hours it took for you to get all that on,
22:13get the wig on, do the clothes,
22:14and I think we did two takes of you literally going...
22:18You were wrapped.
22:20What was your full day?
22:22Oh, what a nightmare day that was.
22:27And Kieran, you play the role...
22:29Originally, it was Stanley Tucci in the later films.
22:32Yeah.
22:33So what's the idea, you're Stanley Tucci 24 years earlier?
22:35Yes. Earlier, yeah.
22:37So how did you approach it?
22:39Like, did you watch Stanley Tucci and kind of go,
22:41OK, what would he have been like all this years ago?
22:43So there was this...
22:43For me, it was sort of hard for me to figure out,
22:47because firstly, when I was asked to do it,
22:49I thought I was just terrible casting.
22:52I was like, he's great.
22:53Also, everyone loves what Stanley Tucci did in the movie,
22:56so that's just way too nerve-wracking a situation to walk into.
23:00I feel like I'm setting myself up for failure,
23:02like, oh, you're not what we love.
23:04But that was sort of debating between, like, you know,
23:07having the freedom to find the character myself
23:09and make it my own
23:10and not be bound to what another actor's choices were.
23:13But I also felt like I couldn't just ignore it
23:16and disappoint fans and, like, what they were expecting.
23:20So I remember, actually, I was talking to my wife about it.
23:21I was trying to figure out, like, which one I should do.
23:23Said I kind of just want the freedom to create it.
23:26And she was like, why don't you pick one thing that Stanley did?
23:29Which I think was brilliant advice for someone who's, like,
23:32really small.
23:33Not an actor, and it was, like, good.
23:35And I was like, oh, that actually helped me.
23:36Because it felt like...
23:38And when I talked to the director, he said,
23:39we love what Stanley did, it was great,
23:41but don't do any of that stuff.
23:42Don't do, like, the teeth, the hair,
23:44don't do any of the things.
23:44He goes, just make it your own.
23:46But I still felt like there needed to be something that, like,
23:49connected them.
23:50What was it?
23:50I'm not going to say, it's way too actor-y.
23:52What it was was...
23:55I'm with you naming it.
23:56I thought we were going to get there.
23:57No, there's boring actor stuff.
23:59I just found a thing, as long as it makes sense that, like,
24:02there's some sort of...
24:04What was it?
24:05I'm not going to want to say.
24:06I'll put it in my book in a few years.
24:08Someday people will see it in the order of the actual story,
24:13and he'll be...
24:14It'll make sense.
24:15He'll be the first.
24:16He'll be the original.
24:17Well, we've got a clip of you, Caesar Flickerman,
24:19and this is you preparing the tributes for the games.
24:29And Kieran, since the last time you saw her, you, as I say, won an Oscar,
24:34but also you were on Broadway.
24:35Yeah.
24:36Glengarry Glen Ross, and it sort of...
24:39Oh, there you all are.
24:40That's wonderful.
24:41It was a kind of strange geographical reunion with your sister from succession.
24:46Yeah.
24:47Yeah, she was on Broadway at the same time, actually.
24:50And I think...
24:51I know where you're going with this.
24:52Is this the thing where I pass her on?
24:54Yeah.
24:55So it was the opening.
24:55So Sarah Snook was doing...
24:57Picture Dorian Gray, which was brilliant.
24:59She did it here first, and brilliant here and there.
25:01But I was on the way to work, and some people thought this was staged,
25:04but I was just in a car on the way to work, and I was passing by,
25:06and I'm like, oh, there's Peter Friedman from succession,
25:09and Juliana, oh, my God, and I just rolled down the window,
25:12and I was like, hey, guys, I love your show.
25:15She's like a dick.
25:16Yeah.
25:16When you say leaned out the window...
25:23That was brilliant!
25:26That's a very flattering picture.
25:28I know, you're very well dressed.
25:30You like your bracelets.
25:31I do.
25:32I got only a couple today, but, yeah.
25:34But did you take...
25:35So you had to take all those off...
25:36Yes.
25:36...do the show, and then you put them all back on again?
25:38Oh, they're little rubbery things.
25:39They come off like that.
25:40Okay.
25:41Slide them off and take the time to slide them on
25:42with all the rings and all the crap and all that.
25:45Okay, fair enough, yeah.
25:46You were always giving me shit.
25:47Yeah.
25:48Yeah.
25:49Glad you dressed up, because I was wearing a T-shirt.
25:51Yeah.
25:52And we've talked about succession on the show before,
25:54but one thing I never knew that you had on succession,
25:56but you must have been talking about it somewhere,
25:57where you had wealth consultants...
26:00Yeah.
26:01...giving you tips on how the uber wealthy live.
26:03Yeah.
26:04I don't know that I really have the conversations with them,
26:06but the writers would and stuff,
26:08and they would try to tell me things like that.
26:09Like, one of the major things was,
26:10you wouldn't wear a coat,
26:12because you just walk out of the building,
26:13get into your car,
26:14you get out of the car,
26:14you go to where you're going.
26:15So we just were not given coats or bags,
26:18things like that.
26:19They did tell me once,
26:20they were like,
26:21oh, well, you have to duck your head
26:23when you are going to go in a helicopter.
26:26Oh, yeah.
26:26Yeah.
26:27Me?
26:29I'm not...
26:30Yeah, and I saw...
26:30I see, you know, Matthew McFadyen,
26:32who's like 6'3", 6'4", something like that.
26:34He did a little one of these,
26:35and what am I supposed to do?
26:36What am I...
26:36If I hopped,
26:37I'm not as tall as him,
26:39so I'm not doing that.
26:40But actually, the consultants were like,
26:41that was good.
26:42Don't duck your head.
26:43These people get on helicopters all the time.
26:44Just walk straight on.
26:45And the safety people are like,
26:46no, no, no, you got it.
26:47Please.
26:49Just walk right on.
26:49But it's...
26:50Just walk right on.
26:51It's really the world of succession.
26:53You feel like there's a direct line
26:55back to kind of the greed
26:57and the power and the money of Wall Street.
27:00That was, you know,
27:00that Gordon Greco, that character.
27:02And in the book, you talk about
27:03how surprised you were
27:05at the public's reaction to Gordon Greco.
27:08Well, he was...
27:09Well, yeah.
27:10I mean, everybody...
27:12Everybody would come up to me,
27:14always half-lit,
27:15if they were, you know, from Wall Street,
27:17and say,
27:18you're the guy.
27:20You got me.
27:20I wanted to go to Wall Street.
27:22I said,
27:22I was the villain.
27:24Wrong lesson, yeah.
27:25I was the bad guy.
27:26No, no, no, no.
27:27You're the guy.
27:28And, you know,
27:29so I guess the clothes
27:30and everything else
27:31and power
27:34and evil...
27:35Yeah.
27:35People like that.
27:36But also,
27:37I was thinking this.
27:38So, in that one year,
27:40so you play
27:40Diana of Fatal Attraction,
27:42then you play Gordon Greco,
27:43and they're both,
27:45on paper,
27:46quite bad people.
27:47Yes.
27:48Do you think you were just too likeable?
27:51You know, audiences just liked Michael Douglas.
27:54I like playing bad guys.
27:56I mean, guys like villains.
27:57We all love villains.
27:59Because, Glenn,
28:00I remember after Fatal Attraction,
28:01there were those, you know,
28:02in the...
28:02the most hated woman in America...
28:04I know.
28:05Yeah.
28:05I walked into, you know,
28:06a grocery store,
28:07and there it was.
28:08And the National Enquirer,
28:10the most hated woman in America,
28:11and I kind of went...
28:13LAUGHTER
28:14And then I thought,
28:15are they talking about...
28:17me personally?
28:19Did you then avoid playing
28:20a villain at all?
28:22No, I...
28:22I know you didn't think she was a villain,
28:23but let's...
28:24I think the next thing I did was
28:25Dangerous Liaisons.
28:27Oh, OK.
28:28Yeah.
28:29APPLAUSE
28:29Oh, my God.
28:30And...
28:31Amazing.
28:33And...
28:33You know, similarly, Kira,
28:35do people think,
28:36when they meet you,
28:37they are going to meet Roman Roy
28:38from Succession?
28:39Yeah, it actually gives me a lot of freedom
28:41to be rude to them on the street.
28:43LAUGHTER
28:44Are you...?
28:45Yeah, yeah, yeah, fuck off.
28:47LAUGHTER
28:47Oh, awesome, dude!
28:49LAUGHTER
28:49Great.
28:50Cos, Neville, you played...
28:52Whitney Houston,
28:53you're so good in that movie.
28:54APPLAUSE
28:55Yes.
28:58But there was an odd bit of the character
29:00that stayed with you.
29:01Oh, yeah.
29:02I'm told.
29:04I am told that I...
29:05I was dancing like Whitney
29:08probably up until about a year ago.
29:11LAUGHTER
29:11I just had, like, the shoulders.
29:13I would just do a lot of, like...
29:15LAUGHTER
29:16And so I...
29:17But I don't like to think
29:18that I hold on to characters.
29:19I quite like to think I just cut
29:21and I cut it off.
29:22But apparently,
29:24I was...
29:25I was dancing like her for...
29:26I mean, that was five years ago
29:28that I filmed that
29:28and had a bit of her shuffle in me still.
29:31For three years.
29:32For three.
29:33Four years.
29:34I don't dance a lot, Greg.
29:35But, Glenn, oddly the character
29:38that you say stayed with you
29:39isn't a film character, is it?
29:41No, Norma Desmond.
29:42From Sunset Boulevard.
29:43From Sunset Boulevard.
29:43You were so good at that.
29:45And, um...
29:45It was like being haunted.
29:47Because all of a sudden
29:49I was back in my house,
29:50I was making lunch for my little girl
29:52and it was, like, in the chair
29:54was Norma Desmond saying,
29:56Oh!
29:57Children?
29:58LAUGHTER
29:59Sandwiches?
30:01Where am I?
30:03It was very bizarre.
30:05Wow.
30:06You take a lot of singing lessons
30:07when you were really young.
30:08I was the worst singer
30:10in the whole company
30:11when we started
30:11and I, every night
30:12for half an hour
30:13before the curtain
30:14I would work with our conductor.
30:16Wow.
30:17Slowly developing my voice.
30:18And, of course,
30:19Andrew Lloyd Webber,
30:20a composer of Sunset Boulevard,
30:21you're about to be reunited with him.
30:23Yes, I'm very excited.
30:24Because you're back in the West End
30:25in...
30:26Is it January?
30:27Yes.
30:28Tell the people who you're playing.
30:29Oh.
30:29I'm playing Herod
30:31in Jesus Christ Superstar.
30:35CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
30:36That's the worst thing ever!
30:38Yes, my God!
30:40Yes, my God!
30:41I can't quite figure out yet
30:43what I'm going to do.
30:44Maybe this?
30:45Yeah.
30:46Have you seen it?
30:47Not this version, no.
30:49I saw it this week.
30:49It's such a great production.
30:51Oh, yeah.
30:51Such a great production.
30:52And you are the big finish.
30:54You're the final week
30:54at the Theatre of Audrey Lane.
30:56If you want to see, Glenn,
30:57don't just book tickets.
30:58You're very specific.
30:59You're in for that week.
31:00So, it's the 4th to the 9th of January
31:03if you want to see Glenn.
31:04And, of course, you can see Glenn
31:05and Kieran
31:05in The Hunger Games
31:06Sunrise on the Reaping
31:08from the 20th of November!
31:10Very good!
31:11CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
31:13Thank you!
31:14It's so cool!
31:18Naomi Ackie brings us Clayface.
31:21It's in cinemas now.
31:22It is, I'm happy to tell you,
31:24the number one movie
31:25in America right now.
31:26Yeah, that's cool.
31:27I know.
31:27Congratulations.
31:28Very good.
31:29APPLAUSE
31:33So, Clayface is part of Batman's universe.
31:38Yeah, DC universe.
31:38He's one of the lesser known.
31:41But it's not a Batman movie?
31:42Batman is not in this one.
31:44But we have Clayface,
31:45played by Tom Rhys-Harris,
31:47who is incredible.
31:49And it's a body horror,
31:50and it's a kind of gothic romance,
31:53and it's really disgusting,
31:55and it's so gross,
31:57and it's so much fun to watch.
31:59But this is kind of Clayface's origin story.
32:01Yeah, yeah.
32:02This is his origin story,
32:04how he gets to become the villain,
32:06and it's so much fun to watch.
32:09And who are you?
32:10I play Caitlin Kaur,
32:12who is a...
32:13I always forget this bit.
32:14She's a nanotechnologist.
32:18So this character didn't save you
32:19as much as Whitney did.
32:20No, no, no.
32:20Got it, all right.
32:21No, and she basically is, like,
32:24really, really smart,
32:25and she comes up with nanotechnology
32:28to help...
32:28You know, nanotechnology.
32:29You know.
32:30It's gonna be on nanos.
32:35I graduated in it.
32:39And she kind of helps him.
32:41His character is disfigured, isn't it?
32:43He's, like, completely mutilated.
32:44Oh.
32:45And she helps his face go back,
32:47but it helps too much,
32:48and then it gets all weird.
32:49Oh, no.
32:51The technical chairman of nanotechnology.
32:53Yeah, yeah, yeah.
32:54Yes.
32:54Oh, it's got too many nanos,
32:55it got all weird.
32:57All right,
32:58we've got a taste of the trailer for Clayface.
33:01Here it is.
33:02Oh.
33:03Oh.
33:04Oh, yeah.
33:06Oh, yeah.
33:08Uh, Tom Rees-Harris, uh, he...
33:11So, he's...
33:12Is it CGI or is it...?
33:14It's prosthetics.
33:16He went through 18 different stages of prosthetics with this,
33:21and it's actually just incredible.
33:24Um, he had to be in the chair for, like, hours and hours,
33:27and I'd come in, hair already braided,
33:29and I'd be like,
33:29Hi, guys!
33:31Oh, I'm so tired!
33:34Halfway through the day I'm exhausted.
33:36It must have been so lovely with the rest of you, because...
33:38Oh, mate, it was delightful!
33:41I was Mary Sunshine.
33:43Like, it was so much fun anyway.
33:45I feel like horror films, filming them,
33:47are more fun than any other type of film.
33:51Why is that?
33:52I just...
33:53I'm a horror nut as well.
33:55Like, I'm obsessed with it.
33:56And I just love how you can be one second and be like,
33:59Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah!
34:00And then they're like, cut, and you're like...
34:04It's jokes.
34:05So, I love it.
34:06I love the fake blood, and I love the guts,
34:09and I just like...
34:12Very gritty there, Amy.
34:14You know, you are in one movie,
34:16and you're also in another.
34:17Yeah.
34:17That came out tonight.
34:19Has it come out tonight?
34:20Yes.
34:20Oh, yeah!
34:21Yeah.
34:22You should probably tell us about it.
34:26This is I Love Boosters.
34:28Yes, yeah.
34:29This looks really good fun.
34:30It's...
34:31Oh, my gosh.
34:31This is, like, completely different.
34:34It's...
34:34It's a...
34:35Boots Riley directs it.
34:37It's about fashion, but also about, like, consumerism,
34:40also about the global community,
34:42how we can come together and fight for a better cause for everyone.
34:45But it's wild.
34:47I mean, the costumes are insane.
34:49It's so colourful.
34:50We had an insane time doing it.
34:52There's five main women in it,
34:54and I feel so sorry for Boots,
34:55because it was like herding cats.
34:57I mean, yeah.
34:59Yeah.
34:59So that's out.
35:01But also, don't forget, you can also see Naomi in Clayface,
35:04and that is also in cinemas now.
35:06Very good.
35:10OK.
35:11It is time for music.

35:17with number one hits like About You Now,
35:18Push The Button, and Freak Like Me.
35:20Now performing their latest single, Ghost,
35:22from their first new album in 16 years,

36:02Your voices sound so great together.
36:05So beautiful.
36:06I know someone who's very happy to see you on the couch,
36:09Naomi Aki.
36:09I'm a huge fan.
36:12This is crazy.
36:16Stop right now.
36:17I didn't know you were going to be here today.
36:19And I posted you on my Instagram.
36:21Stop it, really?
36:21You did a great interview, yeah.
36:23Say goodbye.
36:24Bye.
36:28You guys are insane.
36:32I wanted to answer somebody who's...
36:33Insane.
36:35That...
36:35That...
36:35That goes, that's the single.
36:36And that is off the upcoming album, Sugar Babes.
36:39Single out now.
36:40Now the album doesn't come out till what?
36:42It's February?
36:43Yeah.
36:43Yes.
36:44February the 12th.
36:4527th?
36:4512th?
36:4712th?
36:4712th?
36:47Sorry, that's the date I've got coming up.
36:50It's the 12th.
36:51It's the 12th.
36:51It's the 12th.
36:51It's the 12th.
36:52It's the 12th.
36:52It's the 12th.
36:52It's the 12th.
36:52It's the 12th.
36:53It's the 12th.
36:54February.
36:54Is it already?
36:56I never understand this.
36:57I was thinking Christmas, me now.
36:59Christmas.
37:00I know.
37:01But we've got...
37:01There's a lot of special things coming up, so we're super happy, yeah.
37:05What?
37:06We'll give you a copy.
37:07Yeah, no, thank you very much.
37:09You're welcome.
37:09And in interview, you said this is kind of like a full circle moment, this album.
37:14Lots of full circle moments.
37:16Yes.
37:16So, for those who don't really know, we've been, like, we started the show when we were
37:2012 years old.
37:21Yeah.
37:21So, it's been such a journey, yeah.
37:23So, when people go, we grew up with you.
37:24Yeah.
37:24And they're like, how come you look the same?
37:26It's like, because we started when we were, like, six months.
37:28Quite literally.
37:29No, no, there are all those pictures of you guys in school.
37:31It's unbelievable.
37:33Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
37:34Do you find them quite embarrassing?
37:35Yeah.
37:37It's definitely been a full circle moment.
37:38Obviously, everyone knows our history and we've been through, you know, a lot of different things.
37:42But we decided to get back together, like, 14 years ago.
37:45And we just, you know, we got our name back.
37:48And, yeah, we just want to show everyone that it doesn't matter what age you can reinvent yourself.
37:52And, you know.
37:53And you're going back on tour.
37:55Yes, we are.
37:57In smaller venues, which we like.
37:58Yes.
37:59It's called an intimate venue.
38:01Am I home?
38:01Yes.
38:02Intimate, yes.
38:03Which we much prefer, by the way.
38:05We do.
38:05We did the OT and we loved it.
38:06I was there, it was great.
38:08Oh, yeah.
38:09Wow.
38:10But I, I always prefer smaller venues because then you get to, like, see people.
38:14You can see people.
38:15Exactly.
38:15I prefer the big ones because I feel like you can't see anyone.
38:18And then, you know, the smaller venues you can see, everyone's faces react.
38:23And that can be nerve-wracking.
38:24Kija, is it you?
38:25Which of you is the big Fatal Attraction fan?
38:28I think we all are.
38:30I mean, honestly, like, in my house just growing up.
38:33And it's so funny, like, meeting you in real life, you're just like so...
38:36I was really afraid of you, like, growing up because I was...
38:39You played the character so well.
38:41And, yeah, I just...
38:43Can I have a question?
38:43Do you think the character was a psychopath?
38:47A little.
38:49You know, I was so young.
38:52Oh.
38:53It was the reshoot.
38:54The character, the character...
38:56Well, not yet.
38:57Anyway, that was a trick question and I'm slow.
38:59So, no, no, no, I am a huge fan, we all are, of the film.
39:04But also, I think they just don't make films like that anymore.
39:07No.
39:07They don't make actors anymore anymore, really.
39:10I mean...
39:11Yeah, thanks.
39:13Wow.
39:15Wow.
39:16That's gonna hurt, Naomi.
39:20He loves them so much.
39:23No, it's just...
39:24That's strange.
39:25I get what you mean.
39:26Film is completely different.
39:28Yeah, yeah, yeah.
39:28Yeah, yeah.
39:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
39:30That's how you saw them.
39:31Sugar Babes, it's absolutely lovely to see you again.
39:34Thank you for that.
39:34Good luck with the album when it comes out.
39:36And your intimate tour.
39:37Sugar Babes, everyone!
39:42So good to see you.
39:44Right, that is nearly it.
39:46Before we go, it's just time for a quick visit to the big red chair.
39:50Oh, hello.
39:51Hello.
39:51Hi, what's your name?
39:52I'm Louise, I'm from Leeds.
39:54Louise from Leeds.
39:55And what do you do in Leeds?
39:56I teach Spanish.
39:57Oh, lovely.
39:59It seems unlikely, but there you go.
40:02There's people in Leeds who want to speak Spanish.
40:06And Louise is the woman to go to.
40:11OK.
40:12Who do you teach it to?
40:13Just like kids, or...?
40:14Nursery.
40:15Nursery school.
40:17It's true, I'm not making it up.
40:20OK, that is a posh nursery.
40:24Time for Spanish!
40:28All right, Louise, off you go with your story.
40:31So, I was on a student exchange in Spain when I was about 16 with a friend of mine.
40:36Oh, yeah.
40:36Yeah.
40:36And we went out for a day with my friend's family, and the mother was trying to be really nice
40:42to me, speaking to me in Spanish.
40:44And she said...
40:44She asked me if I had any pets, like, in Spanish.
40:47And I had a guinea pig, didn't know how to say it.
40:49So, I said the closest thing, which I thought, was cornejo, which is a rabbit.
40:53But I actually said, tengo un cojรณn, which means I have a testicle.
40:58And then I carried on speaking, and said it's brown, a little bit fluffy, and it's called...
41:04And it's called Mike.
41:06Beautiful war!
41:07Beautiful war!
41:08Very good!
41:10Lovely!
41:11And, OK, that really is all we've got time for.
41:13Please say thank you to all of the guests tonight.
