00:00I believe I saw that Michael King opted out of his $58 million remaining contract.
00:08He was a big reason the Padres were even in contention that he kind of flew under the radar.
00:14But come the postseason, he was their best pitcher.
00:18He was the only guy they could actually rely upon.
00:20Did he make himself money or is he crazy for giving up the $58 million here that he had on
00:28the table?
00:28No, he'll get $150 million, $200 million this offseason.
00:32What?
00:33Oh, yeah.
00:34The thing that you got to remember is free agency in sports and in particular in baseball.
00:42It's not really about how good you are.
00:45It's the class of free agents that you're in and when you become a free agent.
00:49And so King is entering a free agent class that's awful.
00:53This is just one of the worst ones we've seen in probably 10 years.
00:57And that's nothing against King, but he may lead a class.
01:00And if you're trying to get better and he's the best option, then you're looking at five years, $150 million
01:06for Michael King.
01:07I mean, you are.
01:08Is he a number two?
01:08This is what's going to happen.
01:09Is he a number two in your rotation?
01:11I mean, is that what you would consider him?
01:13Yeah.
01:14I think so.
01:15I think that's fair.
01:16Yeah.
01:17And that's probably, well, that's got to be more than $58 million in two years, right?
01:22It's got to have a solid number two.
01:26Who, I'll give you a perfect example of when you meet free agency and you're not as good, maybe, as
01:34some.
01:35Last year's actually a pretty good example.
01:37It was okay.
01:37It wasn't great.
01:39All you have to do is compare Michael King.
01:41If you said he's a two, he's certainly as good as Frambois Valdez, right?
01:46That's fair to say.
01:47Yep.
01:47Certainly as good.
01:48Yep.
01:48How much money did Frambois Valdez get from Detroit behind Scoobo last year?
01:53A crap load of money, right?
01:54For Frambois Valdez?
01:56Good point.
01:57Yep.
01:58King's going to get at least that.
02:01That's a good point.
02:02And so then what are we, the likes of Casey Mize, who didn't, who went MIA.
02:07As soon as they traded him to the National League of the Padres, he went MIA.
02:11But it doesn't matter because he's got the pedigree, I guess?
02:17No.
02:17I think Ray gets a multi-year deal.
02:20I think Mize, probably similar to Jazz, where he'll do one year and try to get himself a multi-year.
02:28I would think.
02:28I don't know.
02:29He's very young still, Mize, but I don't know that anyone's committing four years to Casey Mize.
02:35But again, it's such a weak free agent class that I got to stop myself for a minute and think,
02:41like, if he is the sixth best pitcher in a season where he normally would be the 10th,
02:46I mean, he may end up getting more money than we think.
02:48We'll see.
