00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio on the very day that way back in 1926, 90 years ago,
00:38something special happened in the literary world that went on to have huge impact amongst generations of children.
00:45It was like A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh. It was first published today, back in 1926.
00:52Alan Alexander Milne was inspired, really, by the love of his or his sons, his beloved sons, love of stuffed
01:01toys.
01:02It was an extraordinary thing, really. His son, of course, was called Christopher Robin.
01:06And so a great generation of kids growing up learned all about Christopher Robin and his wonderful bear known as
01:13Winnie, Winnie the Pooh.
01:15And Winnie, actually, apparently, Rachel Bear, was named after a Canadian mascot, Winnipeg.
01:21It was shortened to Winnie. Where the Pooh came from?
01:23Well, I'm not sure. That remains something of a mystery.
01:26But anyway, there we are, Winnie the Pooh.
01:29So, visiting the zoo.
01:32And I remember when we were kids, because we lived fairly near Bristol, we used to trail off to Bristol
01:36Zoo and ride on the back of Rosie the Elephant.
01:39Oh, really?
01:40There was a child, Rosie the Elephant, yeah. And if we were sort of, you know, very adventurous, we'd go
01:45to London Zoo and see Guy the Gorilla.
01:47Who, I think they've both gone, I'm sure. I'm talking about 60 years ago more.
01:52But riding on Rosie's back was always a pleasure.
01:55What about your visits to the zoo?
01:58I like a good petting zoo.
02:00I don't think they'd let you go to the zoo and ride elephants anymore.
02:03I think 60 years ago is where it's going to stay.
02:05That's right.
02:05Yeah, it's nice when you get to go and you can feed them, and I always just used to enjoy
02:09a good trip to the pond and feed the ducks.
02:11But you used to feed them bread, and you're not allowed to feed them bread anymore.
02:13They're like corn and peas.
02:14Wow. All right.
02:16Rachel, who have we got back with us?
02:17We've got Andrew McLeod, a business analyst, originally from Peterhead, now living in Edinburgh.
02:23Welcome back, Andrew.
02:24Three good wins.
02:25How are you feeling?
02:27So so.
02:28Yeah?
02:29You performed tremendously well, but anyway, good luck to you, Andrew.
02:33You're joined today by Adam Bevan, a supermarket project manager from Potter's Bar.
02:38Now, interestingly, Adam, at your brother's wedding, what's your brother called?
02:42Darren.
02:43You gave a speech, and your speech centred on what exactly?
02:48It was a tribute to somebody.
02:50It just so happened to be that his wedding fell on the same day as Lionel Richie's 60th birthday.
02:55Right.
02:56So I opened with hello, and I obviously coined that the bride looked once, twice, three times
03:02a lady, and you can bet by the end of the day that we were all dancing on the ceiling.
03:05Well done.
03:06It worked well.
03:07It did.
03:07Clever stuff.
03:08Well done.
03:08Let's have a big round of applause for Andrew and Adam.
03:16And in the corner, Susie, how are you, Susie?
03:18Very well, thank you.
03:19Sitting next to the wonderful Brendan Cole, Strictly Come Dancing dancer and choreographer.
03:25Welcome back.
03:26Thank you very much.
03:26Good to see you.
03:27Lovely to see you.
03:28Nice beer.
03:29How long, how many years have you been doing Strictly now?
03:32Way too many, 14 series over 12 years.
03:35You look at it, and you go, it's over a quarter of my life.
03:39I've sat in the audience down in the studio when Rachel was there.
03:42Never have I seen such extraordinary energy and athleticism.
03:47It is amazing.
03:48It is all the emotion.
03:50It is all of the emotion.
03:51It is the intensity, the work.
03:53It all comes together to make something really special.
03:55I don't know why that is, but you've seen it firsthand.
03:57Rachel's done it firsthand.
03:58Yeah.
03:59All right, then.
04:00Let's get down to business, shall we?
04:01Andrew, how about let us game?

08:46This plant sounds like it contains healing properties.
09:05Welcome back.
09:06After the clue, this plant sounds like it contains healing properties.
09:10And the answer is that it's Achillea.
09:14Achillea?
09:15Yeah, lovely history, this one.
09:17It's a plant, Eurasian and North African, includes the yarrow, with small white or yellow flowers.
09:23And it was supposedly used medicinally by Achilles.
09:27Hence the name.

10:59And footled, one of my favourite words, yes, to mess about or engage in fruitless activity.
11:04I didn't know.
11:04I didn't know.
11:05It sums me up perfectly.
11:06I had no idea.

14:031 is 109 times 5
14:06yep you're straight there 5 4 5 all done well done neatly done neatly done as we turn now to
14:16our
14:16dictionary corner guest brendan cole now brendan you're a very talented dancer and choreographer
14:23but you've got other strings to your bow apparently i like to think so uh one of the things about
14:27myself i like adrenaline uh adrenaline sports and maybe to make up from the for the dancing side of
14:32things where it's a bit bit less adrenaline fueled uh i took up motorsport a few years ago uh car
14:38racing and uh i must say there is nothing like it in terms of adrenaline uh but a little story
14:44for
14:44you uh one of the one of the hazards of motorsport is obviously it's very very dangerous a lot of
14:48things can go wrong so i'd taken part in three races all for charity which was a great thing to
14:54be a part of it felt like you're doing something exciting and uh and good stuff so this particular
14:58day i was driving along in the warm-up about 15 minutes in and doing 110 mile an hour down
15:04the
15:04back straight of uh of the central circuit of silverstone the car was a morgan and i had a
15:09brake failure now 100 mile an hour brake failure results in one thing you cannot turn the corner
15:13open top car and unfortunately i had to put it into the into the tire wall broke the car off
15:17terrible terrible thing there you weren't hurt thankfully i was hurt very badly i smashed my knee
15:22actually uh very very badly and i was i started strictly on crutches um i think i've always had
15:26a love for doing things a little bit risky and a little bit you know i've jumped out of a
15:30plane i've
15:31done a few bungee jumps but not so much anymore family that's it for the moment then motor racing wise
15:36what do you do in the off season whilst my job is is using my legs uh and my body
15:41to quite extreme
15:43levels i can't really damage it to the point where i i may not be able to dance again and
15:46i think it
15:46was a bit of a wake-up call uh in terms of let's be let's be sensible about what we
15:51do here uh you
15:52know i've got a family that i need to support and i quite like my lifestyle my job i quite
15:57enjoy it
15:57i want to keep doing i've never i've never uh been involved in racing but i did once drive a
16:03car
16:03around uh um castle coom not very fast and then somebody who's very experienced drove and i sat
16:10in the passenger seat he went very fast it was in my car too so i was quite worried about
16:13it
16:14that's fine and then you suddenly realize that actually in a race you've got six blokes biting
16:19your exhaust pipe behind you trying to get past well it's terrifying it's pushing it to the maximum
16:24isn't it and it only takes a small mistake uh absolutely my mistake luckily wasn't mine it was a
16:28break failure but uh still the the consequences were were massive and and the poor old morgan got
16:34written off the poor old morgan was no longer but you know it's its own fault it shouldn't have
16:37found thank you well done all right so 59 to andrew adam on 17 and we turn back to you
