00:00We disagree, but we're all human, and to find that heart in everybody, I think, is a really nice thing
00:06to see.
00:11This Christmas, Ghost returns to our screens with another festive special.
00:16Two stars of the show, Charlotte Ritchie and Martha Howe Douglas, joined us to discuss the programme.
00:21This is what we found out.
00:27For some people, being around your family is just not really necessarily, like, the relaxing place to be.
00:31Ghost is such a testament to, like, you know, they've had to live together for hundreds of years,
00:36so it's the perfect show for kind of getting together with people that have very different views.
00:40No, no, no, no, no, no. She's no niece of mine. Look at her. She's exposing her knees, and she's
00:45got a tattoo.
00:50In the Christmas special, Ghost takes on an issue that's very close to our hearts here at The Big Issue.
00:55I think the episode does a really good job of talking about homelessness, but why did you want to tackle
01:00this issue?
01:01We thought that we could find the heart in it, and there has to be a real heart for the
01:05Christmas episode.
01:06We had to handle that quite sensitively, because it's not a hilarious issue, is it?
01:11I don't think the show sets out at the beginning to sort of have a particular, like, polemical message.
01:16I mean, I think it does have a, you know, an open-heartedness in the whole concept.
01:21It's definitely a warm show, and it's an open-minded show, and I think that that allows it to then
01:26explore those kind of, like, issues.
01:28But I think doing it in a way that is humorous, relaxes people, and it gets in through a different
01:33room.
01:34They seem really nice. Let's give them a chance.
01:46And it turns out that Lady Fanny has a personal connection to the issue of homelessness, too.
01:51She only saved herself and her family from ending up on the streets by sacrificing her own dreams.
01:58What inspired that revelation?
02:00It came from my nan, actually, because my nan was a really brilliant mathematician.
02:05But she had ten brothers and sisters, so they couldn't afford for her to go to uni.
02:08She needed to look after them, because she was the oldest.
02:11And so there was a bit of that that I wanted to put in there, a bit to honour my
02:15nan, really.
02:16But, like, Lady Button, she could have done something amazing, but she was, you know, confined to the life that
02:22she had to lead, because of, you know, the time.
02:25And, yeah, I think seeing that sadness of, you know, what she could have been, she's just had quite a,
02:33you know, a sad and frustrating life.
02:39Absolute filth.
02:45And we learn even more about Lady Fanny when we see her mum, who's played by the legendary Jennifer Saunders.
02:52How was it working with her?
02:53I couldn't have wished for better.
02:55Like you say, you know, she really was somebody that we used to watch when we were kids.
03:00She was so lovely.
03:01There was not a starry bone in her body.
03:04She was just wonderful.
03:05You know, she'd make her own tea.
03:07So, yes, she was amazing.
03:10She was really, really lovely.
03:12And was she a bit of a hero to you as well, Charlotte?
03:14Oh, like 100%.
03:16Yeah, iconic.
03:27Feeling any better then?
03:28I didn't get to meet her.
03:29I was really gutted.
03:30I wasn't interested.
03:32No, I didn't.
03:34But I think sometimes that's all right.
03:36Also because sometimes I just turn into a plank and it's so embarrassing.
03:44I do have to ask, have either of you actually seen a ghost?
03:48No, I haven't.
03:51I do believe there may be something else because obviously I've heard lots of things, but no, I haven't.
03:56And I don't think I'd want to.
03:58I think I heard someone say this the other day, like a writer was talking about how she doesn't believe
04:02in it, but in the sort of spirit world, but also wouldn't mess with it.
04:08That's my opinion.
04:10Just kind of like, no, but I'll leave it just in case.
04:13That's how I feel.
04:14That's how I feel.
04:15That's how I feel.
04:16That's how I feel.
04:18That's how I feel.
04:19That's how I feel.
04:19That's how I feel.
04:19That's how I feel.
04:19That's how I feel.
04:19That's how I feel.
04:19That's how I feel.
04:20That's how I feel.
