00:03During the day, this historic building is a sight to behold.
00:07But when the lights are out, it switches to something else.
00:10What I've found here is that when you're here with other people,
00:14with groups of people, no problem, it's just like any other old building.
00:17But when you're here on your own, you don't feel like somebody's watching you,
00:21you feel like the building itself is watching you.
00:24The Gladstone Jail has fascinated folks for years.
00:28And between 1978 and 2022, attracted tours, overnight stays and paranormal hunters.
00:35People are intrigued about whether there's any stories that are left unsaid here.
00:44It's been four years since its closure, with the community glad to see its return.
00:49It's an important part of getting people to come here and see and enjoy our region.
00:54So not having it open has been a real drawback, I think, for the whole area, not just our town.
00:59The Gladstone Jail operated between 1881 and 1975,
01:04and as a military detention barracks during World War II.
01:07Since its closure, stories about the jail's history of death have taken on a life of their own.
01:12There are rumours and stories of there being some hangings taking place here over time,
01:17but there's no official records of that.
01:19Whether they're after hard fact or something more, curiosity has certainly been kept alive.
