00:02Hundreds took to the streets of Santon to celebrate South Africa's Pride Parade,
00:07one of Africa's largest annual celebrations of inclusivity.
00:11Participants waved rainbow flags and banners with messages of support for the LGBTQ plus community.
00:18Many donned colorful costumes for the rally.
00:22For me, Pride is a very important moment every single year.
00:27I've been coming to Johannesburg Pride since the 90s, even when it was in Hilbra.
00:32Nowadays, I'm coming because my child is in the queer community and I'm here to march for trans people.
00:39As we've seen in countries like America, they are just taking away all the rights from transgender folk.
00:45And that's what I'm here to protest about. That's why I'm here.
00:49South Africa was the first country in the world to write a ban on discrimination
00:54on the grounds of sexual orientation into its constitution.
00:59I'm here to celebrate our gay rights. Today is the only day in Johannesburg where we get to be free
01:04and authentic.
01:06When we get to celebrate who we are, our true selves, then we also get to show the community who
01:11we are.
01:11It's a very beautiful day today because we get to enjoy only once in a year, although we have our
01:17rights every day.
01:18So we are very happy to be, I'm very happy to be here and celebrate our rights because we have
01:23countries such as Uganda,
01:25where I have multiple friends who are persecuted there because of being gay.
01:29We have other African countries who are still not free.
01:32South Africa has built a reputation as one of Africa's most gender inclusive places,
01:38with the country having full legal protection for the LGBTQ plus community.
