00:02It starts with like a little whine. It's just always like the same escalation. And then he
00:09starts singing. I think you described it perfectly because that's exactly what I thought when I
00:18said it. He does it at home. Like 99% of the time it's in the car. What was life
00:27for Petey
00:27before you met him? And how did he end up at the shelter? Somebody found Petey like loose on the
00:32streets downtown where we live. One of the volunteers there texted me that a white dog came
00:38in. To the untrained eye, he looks aggressive, barking with wide eyes. And the shelter unfortunately
00:45handled that with a bark collar. He was just terrified. You know, he didn't know where he
00:49was and his whole life just changed. I would go and just take Petey out for the day, take him
00:54to
00:54the river, let him play and run around. Animals are so stressed in shelters that we don't see
00:58their best side in the shelter. So it's so amazing that you gave him a chance. And I did a
01:03lot of
01:04like house visits and sleepovers even. I never saw that side of him in person. He's been super sweet
01:10ever since I met him. Do you remember hearing him make his sounds for the first time? He was a
01:15quiet,
01:16not that he was like low energy, but he was just a quiet dog at home. So it had been
01:20a few months.
01:21We were doing like a long road trip to go back home for the holidays. And this dog just starts
01:27like, I call it singing. I don't know what else to call it. It's not a bark. Sometimes it's a
01:32howl,
01:32but it is this, the vocalization he makes is so unique. And I had never heard that come out of
01:38his
01:39mouth. And I'm driving, right? So like, what can you do besides look back? Like, what was that?
01:50It feels he opened up. Be him full self and know that he's safe and loved to do that.
01:57You curated a space where he felt comfortable enough to do that.
02:01I didn't know Katie was going to sing when I adopted him. That was not the reason I adopted
02:05him. Yes, it's become this like fun, cute. I love his vocalizations. But the biggest thing that
02:12sharing Petey's story can do is to show people how amazing shelter dogs can be.
02:19What is like the biggest and best lesson that Petey has taught you?
02:23One would just be to live fully in every moment. And as cliche as that sounds,
02:28this dog is the happiest dog I've ever met.
02:33Oh, helps me to live a little more through his eyes and see the world
02:38a more exciting and positive way.
