00:00Plans to demolish a former Catholic care home in Headingley and replace it with 37 apartments
00:06have been backed by Leeds councillors. The Little Sisters of the Poor, which owns the
00:11Mount St Joseph's site, says the building is unsafe due to reinforced autoclaved aerated
00:18concrete known as rack in the roof. The charity says selling part of the site will help fund a
00:24separate scheme for sheltered housing, a convent and chapel. The apartments plan attracted 19
00:30objections with residents questioning the lack of affordable housing and family homes. The
00:37proposal received majority support from councillors with final approval subject to conditions and a
00:43legal agreement.
