Shop owners in central Frankfurt were assessing the damage on Sunday after Halloween night clashes and looting left shops wrecked and more than 100 police officers injured.

Footage shows boarded-up shops and smashed windows along the Zeil, Frankfurt's main shopping street, as police patrol the area following Saturday night's violence.

Hesse's Interior Minister Roman Poseck said 17 shops had been damaged and five looted, with 54 people arrested.

"Things like that cause even more problems - and then people think that we are even more bad guys, and then they blame it all on foreigners and stuff," local resident Hasan said.

The violence followed a largely peaceful youth demonstration against rising living costs, cuts to education and compulsory military service. Police said officers came under attack from stones, bottles and fireworks, prompting the demonstration to be dissolved.

Clashes and looting continued afterwards. Police said many of those involved in the subsequent unrest appeared to have no political motive. Protest organisers condemned the violence and said they had no control over events after their rallies ended.

"I also think that this is unacceptable, because other people who have nothing to do with it suffer as a result. Stores get destroyed, things get stolen," Frankfurt resident Mohamed said.

He also called for improvements to schools.

"Maybe improve schools, because you walk around and see that the restrooms are broken, teacher shortage - tomorrow I don't have school either because we don't have a teacher," he added.

Frankfurt's demonstration was part of nationwide protests organised by the Gen Z regelt initiative and other groups, with rallies also held in Berlin, Munich and Cologne. Organisers said more than 100,000 people took part across Germany.

02:42how everything goes together.
02:45And that's just a lie.

02:48And the things are also broken.
02:50And there are proofs,
02:51there are proofs that people are broken.
02:54And then it's easier for the police to find them.
02:58And that's what's on my side.
03:04Yeah, so maybe the school should be better.
03:08Because of course, you're walking around the school.
03:10And you see, the toilets are broken.
03:12There's a lot of money.
03:13Also there's a lot of money.
