00:00Welcome to ETB Bharat. This is Aamir Tantre from Haji Public School Breswana in District Doda.
00:06Situated at the height of 7500 feet from above sea level.
00:11We are at this school. This school was established in 2009 by Sabha Haji.
00:16We will talk to her. How did she conceive this idea?
00:20But before that we will ask her some personal questions.
00:25Sabha, welcome to ETB Bharat.
00:27Good morning. Thank you very much for coming here. Welcome to Haji Public School.
00:30Sabha, tell us something about yourself.
00:33I am from the Haji family and born and raised in Dubai.
00:38Then I did my high school and college and a lot of my career in Bangalore.
00:42My father is from this village in Luda district. Mother is from Jiswa.
00:46I am one of four siblings and we had a great childhood where we used to come to the village
00:51every summer and so we have a very strong connection with this village.
00:55And eventually life came to the circle and I have come back to where my father was born first.
01:01Now tell me, how did you conceive this idea to establish a school at a place which didn't have an
01:09activity?
01:10People used to walk for hours together to reach this village and if they had to go to the district,
01:16they had to walk for hours and then go to the vehicle and buy it.
01:20How did you conceive this idea?
01:22So it's not me, it's my family. That's why the Haji family here comes into play.
01:26My father is from this village and the only reason our family has raised ourselves is through education.
01:35This was a very clear realization where my father, my uncles, my sisters, because of them, they got an education
01:44and that is the only difference between them and their cousins here in Delhi.
01:47So in 2008-09, I was working in Bangalore and I was in a very well-paying job because of
01:55my education and in the editorial.
01:57In that year, I could see my home under fire.
02:07So I just had like a very strange question. I had to say, what am I doing in Bangalore away
02:11from my parents, away from my roots?
02:13I made an instant decision to wrap up my city life and come back here to Doda and let me
02:19see what I can do.
02:20I have skills enough, I can help you.
02:22And while we were in Doda, my mother, father and I, this idea came up. My uncle Nasir Haji, cha
02:28cha merek.
02:28He is the main, you know, the strength behind this. We first sat down and we said, let's do something
02:34big, long-term, just say, kuch actual hasil ho, and that is through education.
02:39And instead of giving monthly stipend your scholarship, better is start our own school.
02:44My next question, why only education? You had many options. You would have helped this village in different terms. But
02:52why education?
02:53Because I really feel, and I think it's very obvious, that education covers everything. You prepare a generation to do
03:00whatever they want.
03:01Give them the skills and opportunities, which just by pure luck they don't have.
03:05There is no difference between a child here and the child of a billionaire sitting in a city.
03:09The difference is luck, circumstances, what opportunities, what opportunities are there.
03:17That's why the children are like, let us start on a good scale, on a very good quality, the same
03:24kind of schooling that I would expect for my children or my cousins or my sister's children.
03:28Why do I have to say, no, we will give them the best education, they will become the best possible.
03:33It's a very clear thing, and as I have taught for 17 years now in this school and later school,
03:39it has become clearer and clearer for the whole world.
03:42Education or sahih education, not this factory system of, you know, rote learners and don't ask questions or sar neiche
03:49karke na jiha.
03:50You or we want to start making great well-developed citizens who learn how to ask questions.
03:57You will ask teachers questions, you will ask why for everything, you will ask why, why, what is the logic.
04:04Then you become adults who can critically think about anything.
04:08So this has become clear to me now.
04:10And education is really the...
04:15You will all supported you in this cause.
04:24I can say this is a noble cause for all these people.
04:29It is noble, definitely education by itself is.
04:32It is our family.
04:33Essentially the school, even till today, is very hand to mouth we run.
04:37Only my family, my immediate Puffis, uncle, sister, brother, all of us cousins, we contribute for our funding.
04:44But now over the years, because we have, you know, very good friends of ours,
04:48a little closer to my regular donors of the school,
04:51they send alums up in a year or two hours.
04:54That is the financial bit.
04:55Mostly it is Mr. Nasserhaji who helps through his friends and his networks.
04:59But we are self-funded.
05:00Of course, government aid nahi hai koi.
05:02In terms of support, see village made school bana hai.
05:05Village at that time, aaj roads hai hai.
05:07At the time, it was one, you know, dot on the mountain.
05:10Just like the highway pe chal raha hai.
05:12Oopar mountains pe koi teen ka chhat chamakta hai.
05:16Wo humara gaon hai.
05:17So, coming up, last highway pe stop at Kremnagar.
05:21Kremnagar se pull par karke, four and a half, five hours walk up.
05:25In those days, yeh school gaon walo ne bana hai.
05:29Aaj teen ka patta hun hai.
05:31Apni kamar te othha ke la hai.
05:32Sariye jo laggi hai.
05:33Buildings me construction me.
05:35Bhatti jo yaan laggi hai.
05:36Amne brik skud bana hai.
05:37The villagers made it.
05:38They have literally built the school.
05:40But that was a real hunger for educating the children.
05:43Bokhat inko bokhat zyada shok hai.
05:45Aapne bacho ko.
05:46Obviously, pranika, they missed good education.
05:48And they really are, you know, the way, the extent they go to.
05:52To the villagers, of course, support.
05:53My father is an elder here.
05:56Sara village.
05:57He knows them.
05:58He knows how to.
05:59He knows the families.
06:00He was the main, you can say, capitalist.
06:04And my mother is an educator, principal.
06:07So, she was like the admin head, the skeleton of the school, the rules, the discipline.
06:13She's been a lifelong educator.
06:14She brought that experience into our school and taught us everything.
06:18Tell me one thing, what was the most difficult thing you had to cope with among the children, their parents
06:26and overall in the society?
06:28Even today, that continues to be the main problem.
06:32It is this, the discipline of education or the support for education.
06:38It's a mentality ki ba hai.
06:39Education and discipline and self-study and sticking to the rules.
06:50So, even teaching kids how to study, you know, all of that, even teaching kids how to study or guiding
07:06them.
07:06Because it seems after all these years or so, we are not at the place where children are studying on
07:11their own.
07:13Where they know ki ba hai atana discipline schedule rukhna hai.
07:16So, that is a big challenge.
07:18We want kids to be self-motivated to take the initiative.
07:22So, understand me?
07:22It wasn't easy.
07:25Because changing the mindset of people who have all together seen the government schools where nothing was happening.
07:31And after turmoil of 20 years of this militancy and everybody was sticking to their homes to save their lives.
07:40But it was not easy when we came here in 2009.
07:43Yeah, it was not easy.
07:45It's never been easy.
07:46But the thing is ki, the way the villagers or community wants the kids to study.
07:51Right?
07:52They are hungry for their to succeed.
07:54Jaha par wo na ho paye.
07:55Jaha par wo na ho paye.
07:56Jaha par unki padhai theet nahi ho paye.
07:57They want that for their kids.
07:59Next generation.
07:59So, next generation needs to understand ki, what all the family has missed and what all is possible through education.
08:05Anything is possible.
08:07If you put hard work in, you do your, get your skills up, get your competence.
08:10But also hard work, communication, personality.
08:13Yeh saara kaunt karta hai aaj ki zaman ki.
08:15It wasn't possible for one lady to do.
08:19Yeah.
08:20How did you get school from the volunteers?
08:23Yes.
08:23So that is lucky for me through again communication.
08:26And my network in Bangalore, my friends, who told their friends, building credibility.
08:31Ki bai yek school hai, you can trust this girl, go and try it out.
08:34So it was trial error.
08:35And in the beginning people I knew that that's how the volunteer program started in 2011.
08:40My friends, they stayed for short term.
08:43Because they came, their photos went out on social media.
08:46Then other people started applying.
08:47Then I made a formal volunteer program where people had to apply in a certain way.
08:52I would do interviews and so on.
08:54So it slowly built.
08:55En toho saal ke baad, the people who came are again very good in communication and photographing.
09:00So they took pictures of the school, the work they were doing.
09:02That's when we had kindergarten, first primary, the children were very cute.
09:06They still are.
09:07But those are good pictures to show in remote areas when they were actually doing good work.
09:12But that is how you build credibility.
09:13You do good work, your credibility builds.
09:16And there are a lot of young people who want to help, who want to volunteer.
09:20I want to tap into that pocket.
09:23There is a lot of work to do.
09:25I need people who can come and help the school, stay for 4 to 6 months, teach.
09:29How many teachers do we have?
09:3125.
09:32All are from outside?
09:33No.
09:33No.
09:33There are a lot of our base is the local teachers who have been trained and have worked with
09:37the school for a long time.
09:38But we do have like 10 teachers bhaar ke ote hain then rolling volunteers.
09:42And what is the strength of students at this moment?
09:46It's around 400 to 450 on like a week session change.
09:49So we do work in 450.
09:51So from where these students come?
09:54Right.
09:55So this is the mountain Doda district ke pahaara hai.
09:59Because 400 to 450 people coming from one village is not visible.
10:04Because population is scattered here.
10:0620 to 30 villages.
10:0820 to 30 villages.
10:09And have moved actually to the village for the school.
10:11Balesa se bhi hain, Kishtuwar se bhi aate hain.
10:14But our first thing is admission mein I have a restriction.
10:18First my village is priority.
10:19Then the nearby villages get priority.
10:21Do you have limitations in there?
10:22Yeah, yeah.
10:23We don't want overcrowded classes.
10:24That's a very important thing in school.
10:26So 25 to 30 so we try not to go.
10:29Hadh hoti hai to we'll go a little bit above hai.
10:31Otherwise we split into sections.
10:33So that's very important for your teaching.
10:35If you have to have a healthy sensible number of kids per class.
10:38Primary mein hash kar you need.
10:40If there are 20 se zada becomes difficult.
10:42So then we put in a helping teacher or something.
10:44Very important to maintain a student teacher's moderation.
10:48During this time you might have faced many problems or roadblocks by some people.
10:52Because few were the established ones who didn't want anybody to come to steal their show.
11:00Do you think you have faced some of those kind of problems?
11:03I don't think the established schools have.
11:06The thing about education is all parents want the best product.
11:09I think that whatever school will do, parents will do there.
11:14And then plus convenience and so on.
11:16So, for instance, why don't they come here?
11:19There are good schools over there.
11:20It's not like I'm tapping into anymore.
11:22Here is an urgent need.
11:24This is very remote.
11:26Maybe you will see the terrain here.
11:28What kind of people do you have here?
11:30These are a mix of, like all, mostly farmers.
11:34Mostly farmers, who go for manual labor.
11:37And people are very low quality.
11:39But all subsistence farmers.
11:41Some are drivers, private cabs.
11:43Some, very very few, the public trunks are some government doctors.
11:48Most of them are private farmers.
11:52You know they are a school, or a town, or a nation.
11:56Something like that.
11:57Really a very underprivileged section.
12:01They are the drug of money.
12:02But sugar is all land in farms,
12:04all our health and healthy children.
12:06So that's it.
12:07So that's our demographic here.
12:08We have Budjars, Satomas,
12:10Havadam, Nisab, Dino, Saber,
12:12But we have more and more High-Phillies in Hungary.
12:15And a lot of Budjars who are trying to write that I really like.
12:19What is this Alana like?
12:20That is a literary one here.
12:23We were basically part of the school in 2009.
12:25The first break was TV.
12:28Yeah, we started TV.
12:30Alhamdulillah, there's one of our kids.
12:32We just finished the three of us from Bangalore.
12:36Kamad and she's been masters of literature in the University of Kashmir.
12:40She's two of us in the first class.
12:42She's a girl in Ali Garh.
12:45She's a master's.
12:46We have reached master's stage.
12:48They are yet to be employed.
12:50Yeah, they are not reached that stage.
12:52But they are, mashallah, really right.
12:54For example, she's going to Mount Kams,
12:56the Taqwist College for English language.
12:58She did very well there.
13:00Master's of ISME, Master's course.
13:01She's doing well.
13:02So I keep track of their academics.
13:05Ali Garhwala, Al-Khattop, Artha,
13:08Central University.
13:09Anybody into medical field?
13:11They have tried, I think.
13:12So that's why I'm saying that for discipline of cracking the need,
13:15Abhi Thakni one.
13:16That is, they're trying.
13:17Lot of kids are trying to try.
13:18They need Abhi Thakni one.
13:20You may be trying for competitive exams like KS and IAS?
13:23They will reach there eventually.
13:24Abhi Thakni one.
13:25A lot of them have the dream for exams and so on.
13:31I mean, let's see, inshallah, whatever they want.
13:35Tell me, you have spent 17 years of your work here.
13:41What about your personal life?
13:43I'm very happy with my personal life.
13:45I've had a very good childhood, college years, friendships,
13:49and which are still very strong, but
13:51Pranke friendships abhi tak me in.
13:55So, for me, because I'm not a very, as a social person,
13:59even when I was in the city, I had a thick set of small friends.
14:02So through the internet, I'm still in there.
14:04Like, you want something more?
14:08Do you want to get married?
14:09No, no, no, not at all.
14:11I'm very happy here.
14:12Plus, I'm not fit for my mentality.
14:15I don't think it's suited for it.
14:17I'm very happy.
14:18I can help the kids.
14:20I can do what I'm doing.
14:21Very fulfilled here with the school.
14:23Very busy.
14:23So you want to spend your rest of your life here only?
14:27I want to set up a system that says,
14:29that if I don't want to get married.
14:31Like, anything can happen.
14:32The school goes on as it does.
14:34They don't want to get married.
14:35They don't want to get married.
14:36They don't want to get married.
14:37I mean, what I want is that it's running so smoothly,
14:40that I can even come and, you know,
14:43check in once in a while.
14:44But I enjoy being here, actually.
14:46You have been praised by many people all over,
14:49all over India.
14:51Many people have come here.
14:53I once read, when Dr. Amitav Bhattu wrote something about you.
14:59You are famous when you were 10 years old.
15:02How do you see that exposure,
15:06that in a place where you have established this school,
15:10and the praise you got?
15:12It helps in, it helps?
15:14It helps in terms of everything I need is for the school.
15:17I need staff.
15:18I need staff.
15:20Continuously we want good staff for the school.
15:22I need funds to help the school.
15:23Volunteers.
15:23I need good quality.
15:25But it helps there.
15:27Otherwise, I think, for example, I don't consider myself famous.
15:31I consider if I am doing this job and I have made networks in the education field,
15:36that is my good luck,
15:38and I can ask these people to help me,
15:40kind people to help me.
15:42They have been helpful.
15:42Because Ramitav Bhattu is a legend in education.
15:45He is not a person.
15:46These are legends of Kashmir.
15:48So they took an interest in the school.
15:50They came and they visited the school here.
15:53They brought some ministers to the school here.
15:55This is very good.
15:56In that sense, people know that this is it.
15:59What I would like that to be used as,
16:02is that the rest of those who are inspired,
16:04that this will be done in their villages.
16:06Whoever, you are educated,
16:07you are privileged,
16:08start improving the education in your villages.
16:12Go to villages, backward areas.
16:14That is what would help.
16:16My fame has got nothing on its own.
16:17Tell me,
16:18what is your message for the community as well,
16:21and for the educational system,
16:23especially Godal Sri,
16:25in German and Kashmir in India?
16:26I feel for the community,
16:28that from our side,
16:30we are doing,
16:30I know we are doing a good job in the school.
16:32You need to support your children better.
16:34You need to go away from the traditional,
16:36straight marketing to understanding.
16:39And this is not just engineering or medical.
16:42Your child will go to the field of interest in the field.
16:47There are thousands of jobs in the private field.
16:50And in the private field,
16:51if there is no job in the government,
16:52then you will not get to.
16:53Go for private jobs,
16:54go for more education.
16:56The more you learn,
16:58the more you earn.
16:59If you are after earnings,
17:00the more you learn,
17:00the more you learn,
17:01the more you earn.
17:04But support your kids,
17:05discipline wise and study wise.
17:07That is for the community.
17:09This was Sabaha Ji.
17:11The girl,
17:13I can say still the girl,
17:14running this school,
17:15Haji public school,
17:17at a place,
17:18where there were no roads,
17:20no concrete buildings.
17:23But now people,
17:24are interested towards education.
17:26ETV Bharat,
17:28will record about education,
17:30at every time.
17:31And this is Amir Kantharit,
17:33from Haji public school,
17:34Brahaswana,
17:35for ETV Bharat.
17:37To be continued.
17:38To be continued.
17:42To be continued.
