00:02We're so excited to be here for our new 1027 We Can Survive concert with Michelle Branch.
00:10Thank you so much for being here tonight.
00:12Oh my god, I wouldn't have missed it.
00:14When I heard about this lineup, I was like, I have to play this show.
00:17This is going to be so fun.
00:18And for a great cause.
00:20Yeah, it's a really great cause.
00:22And thank you so much for coming to the Hard Rock Artist Lounge here at We Can Survive.
00:27It's presented by Veg, ER for Pets, who is making this night possible.
00:32And let's just start out by congratulating you for 25 years in the industry, which doesn't even seem possible, right?
00:41Well, it doesn't seem possible because it literally went in a blip of an eye.
00:45Like, blink of an eye, I feel like I'm still 25 and I still feel like I'm a new artist.
00:50And I'm hungry about making music in the way that I felt like when I was 25.
00:57So it's just a gift to be able to still make music and have people still show up and care
01:04and be curious about new stuff and old stuff.
01:07So it's been great.
01:09It looks like you've been having so much fun.
01:11I mean, you have the new EP, Everywhere and Back Again.
01:14What inspired you to reimagine the songs?
01:17I wanted to breathe new life into the songs that people love and know in a way that was kind
01:25of unique.
01:26So instead of me singing them, I wanted to hear, selfishly, I really wanted to hear, like, my friends and
01:31other artists who I look up to cover these songs.
01:35And so it's been really just such a cool project because I've been able to hear everyone from, like, Maren
01:41Morris do Goodbye to You,
01:43to the New Radicals banded back together to cover Game of Love.
01:47And we have a lot of surprises up our sleeves for the other collabs.
01:51Yeah, we don't know them all yet.
01:53I have to keep my lips sealed or someone would kill me.
01:56But it's exciting who is there.
01:58Your manager suggested doing collabs on the songs.
02:01And is that how it really worked out, like you just thought of your friends?
02:05Yeah, I was like, who can I reach out to that I don't feel, like, cringey to, like, have a
02:10big ask?
02:11And so, like, you know, I know Greg from New Radicals.
02:14I know Maren and then some other people I know.
02:17I was just like, hey, you know, I'm doing this project.
02:20Would you be into it?
02:21And fortunately, I haven't stuck my foot in my mouth yet.
02:25Oh, not at all.
02:26And Greg wrote the song originally, right?
02:28Yeah, Greg wrote The Game of Love.
02:30He also wrote Murder on the Dance Floor.
02:32He's, like, he's a brilliant, brilliant songwriter.
02:35And he's one of my favorite, favorite writers.
02:39And hearing his voice, being able to make it a duet was such a surprise because it wasn't our intention.
02:44We originally asked, we sent a letter out to Dua Lipa to do it.
02:49And we sent a letter out to Olivia Rodrigo to do it.
02:52And then it turned into this duet with Greg and I.
02:56And we were like, wait a minute, we're doing this.
02:58This is crazy.
02:59We're better at this.
02:59I don't know if it's better.
03:01It's just that I've been singing it for 20 years.
03:03So, like, you know, it's settled.
03:05It's settled into our bodies a little bit more.
03:08I love that.
03:09I love that.
03:10Goodbye to you.
03:11Let's talk about that.
03:12Yeah.
03:13That is so much fun.
03:14So great.
03:15Maren Morrison, Kristen Cavallari are in this video with you.
03:19Did you know both of them well before the video?
03:21I didn't know Kristen at all.
03:23And it's crazy because, you know, we were in that MTV kind of circle around the same time.
03:30And she told me a story.
03:31She said that she went to the VMAs one year and she saw me on the red carpet.
03:35And I was like the first famous person she'd ever seen.
03:38And then she freaked out.
03:39And she was like, this is very full circle that now I'm in your music video.
03:42I love it.
03:43Yeah.
03:44And she was so lovely and so easy to be around.
03:47But Maren and I have known each other for years.
03:50We were even neighbors in Nashville.
03:51And I just admired her and her talent for so long.
03:56It's a great video, the three of you.
03:58Do you guys have, like, a group text now?
04:00We have a group text now.
04:01And we keep trying to meet up.
04:04But between the three of us, our schedules and also the fact that we're all three moms, it's a little
04:08hectic.
04:10That day that we shot the music video, we had the stretch Hummer on set.
04:15And we were like, wait, should we just take the Hummer to go have some drinks right now?
04:18And Maren was like, I have a parent-teacher conference thing.
04:20And we're like, no.
04:21Oh, my gosh.
04:22So it's been kind of like that, scheduling.
04:24Yeah.
04:25So it's almost impossible.
04:26You said that going back and revisiting these songs like Breathe, All You Wanted, and Everywhere,
04:35make you feel like you were honoring young Michelle.
04:38Yeah.
04:38What would you tell young Michelle today?
04:42Well, I had a major chip on my shoulder as an artist and as a writer.
04:47I felt like I had to really prove myself.
04:50And I really wanted to be taken seriously as a real writer and not just, like, a teen act.
04:55And now hearing these songs 25 years later cut by artists like Maren has given them this whole new life
05:03where, as a writer, I can finally, like, pat myself on the back and go, wow, okay, these were really
05:07good songs you wrote when you were 15 and 16 years old.
05:10And they still hold up.
05:12So it's healed kind of something in me that was maybe insecure all those years ago.
05:17I love that full circle coming back.
05:20Well, you've changed so many people's lives with your music.
05:23And you're just a natural-born songwriter, I think, if you're writing songs at 15 years old or before.
05:30But, which leads me to my next question.
05:34Being so young when you started out, that had to be overwhelming for such a young person.
05:41I mean, you were like a baby.
05:43It's strange.
05:45Like, I went from living in a tiny little town in northern Arizona to literally touring the world.
05:50So it was a whirlwind.
05:53It was, like, really nonstop for a while.
05:57And I think, you know, nothing can kind of prepare you for being on, like, a trajectory like I was.
06:08And I didn't really get to, like, process really how crazy it was until, like, years later.
06:13Like, whoa, what did I actually experience at that age?
06:17And, like, thinking of all the things that I was exposed to.
06:20And it was really overwhelming.
06:23But you had people like artists, other artists that you looked up to and met.
06:28Yeah.
06:29And did they help you?
06:30Did they give you advice?
06:31You know, one of my early tours was opening for Sheryl Crow.
06:36And Sheryl is a hero of mine.
06:38And she just being in orbit of a woman like her whose career I've admired for so long was so
06:47inspiring.
06:47And she really kind of took me under her wing.
06:50And as did one of those early tours I did was with the Dixie Chicks, which is now the Chicks,
06:55I guess.
06:56But one of the things that I saw being on the road with them was they all had kids out
07:00on the road with them.
07:01And I hadn't been exposed to someone who was managing a career the way that they were and also being
07:09a mom.
07:09And so that was really inspiring for me to know that, like, I could have both.
07:14Continue.
07:15Yeah.
07:15Yeah.
07:16So they really inspired me and were there for me in, like, big sister kind of way.
07:22I love it.
07:23Yeah.
07:23Well, you've changed so many people's lives.
07:25And just go have a great set tonight.
07:28Because your fans are waiting for you.
07:30Thank you so much, Michelle Bradgeon.
07:32Yeah, thanks for having me.
07:32Good luck with the EP.
