00:39Hello and welcome to Africa News Today.
00:42At the end of October, the Algerian parliament approved the deployment of troops in Nigeria.
00:48Algiers went from speech to action.
00:50The Germans of the Algerian People's National Army arrived in northern Nigeria during the weekend,
00:57escorting dozens of tank trucks carrying oil products.
01:00A first convoy of Algerian soldiers was seen in northern Niger this weekend,
01:06a week after Algerian lawmakers approved the deployment of troops to the neighboring country.
01:11According to French radio station RFE, about 60 Algerian tankers crossed the border with Niger,
01:17where they were welcomed by members of the Niger armed forces.
01:21The trucks transported fuel and were secured by Algerian soldiers.
01:25The convoy reportedly reached the northern Nigerian city of Agadez on Saturday.
01:30RFE reported that an Algerian military unit could also be expected in Niamey.
01:35The Algerian parliament agreed to send troops to Niger on October 25,
01:40paving the way for Algeria's first military deployment abroad since the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.
01:46Algerian soldiers should assist Niger in its fight against armed groups,
01:50especially along the country's shared border.
01:52The move comes as countries like the United Arab Emirates and Libya are expanding their influence in the Sahel.
01:59With these deployments, Algiers is also hoping to protect its economic interest in Niger,
02:05including the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline currently under construction.
02:12The fighters of the Tigray Liberation Forces are trying to reclaim the lost land during the offensive of the Federal
02:19Army,
02:20but the TPLF no longer has good press in the Tigray, its historical bastion.
02:25For many Tigrayans, it would be right to see it lose ground.
02:29The Tigray People's Liberation Front was once Ethiopia's ruling party,
02:34but the movement is now facing a backlash from former supporters in Tigray.
02:38In late September, the TPLF joined other armed groups in an offensive to overthrow Ethiopia's federal leaders,
02:45but was quickly repelled by pro-government forces using drones.
02:49The TPLF was forced out of major towns and retreated to the region's hills.
02:53Some Tigrayan residents interviewed by AFP say they once believed in the TPLF,
02:59but that the party is now on the verge of collapse.
03:02For many, the TPLF's recent alliance with Eritrea
03:05also raised painful memories of atrocities committed by Osmara during the 2020-2022 Tigray war.
03:12Some residents say the party has distanced itself from the people.
03:16Several media outlets and Human Rights Watch have also accused the TPLF of practicing forced recruitment.
03:22Meanwhile, in October, Ethiopia's federal authorities formally took control of Tigray,
03:28establishing a six-month interim administration and promising to organize elections.
03:36In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the response is slow in the face of the Budibuju strain of the Ebola
03:43virus.
03:44The disease has already killed more than 5,000 people in the country,
03:49almost six months after the official declaration of the epidemic.
03:53The death toll from the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has reached 5,372 as of
04:01Friday,
04:02according to the latest official report.
04:04The new data released on Sunday also said the outbreak has a case fatality rate of 51.6%.
04:11It means that over half of the people diagnosed with Ebola die from the disease.
04:17The significant increase in reported death is not due to a single-day surge,
04:21but to a retrospective adjustment of data between the local data processing team
04:26and the Ituri Province outbreak management team.
04:29The situation report from the DRC's National Institute of Biomedical Research
04:33showed that the country had recorded over 10,000 confirmed Ebola cases.
04:38The latest outbreak is caused by the Bundibuju strain and was declared in mid-May,
04:43catching authorities by surprise.
04:45They have since struggled to manage it.
04:47According to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
04:50about 80% of new cases are coming from outside the chain of monitored contacts.
04:55Cases have also been recorded in Uganda, Kenya and Nigeria.
05:04Israel named its first ambassador to Agaiza in the self-proclaimed state of Somaliland.
05:18Israel's first ambassador to Somaliland presented its credential to President Abdiraman Mohamed Abdullahi Nona Siro in Agaiza.
05:26The ceremony also marked the laying of the cornerstone for an Israeli embassy.
05:31Israel recognized Somaliland in December 2025 becoming the first United Nations member state to do so.
05:38Somaliland declared independent from Somalia in 1991,
05:41but Mogadishu continues to claim the territory which has not been recognized by any other UN member state.
05:48Abdiraman called the occasion historic, while Ambassador Michael Lotem said the recognition acknowledged what Somaliland had built over 35 years.
05:58The relationship has drawn criticism from Somalia, the Arab League, the African Union and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.
06:05Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamed accused Israel of seeking access to the Red Sea and alleged it wanted a naval
06:13base in Somaliland.
06:15Somaliland officials have indicated openness to hosting an Israeli military base,
06:19though the Somaliland authorities recently said no talks had taken place.
