00:00All right, we'll talk with Chris Perkins on the Toyota of Hollywood Hotline.
00:07Columnist for the Sun-Sentinel writes about the Miami Dolphins.
00:10He was there at Rainy Hard Rock Stadium yesterday as the Dolphins lost to the Patriots.
00:18Although we were just talking in the last segment that neither of us, none of the three of us,
00:23Park, were like despondent that the Dolphins lost because my main goal this season,
00:28I wanted to see Jeff Halfley get at least one win.
00:31I don't think it's the worst thing in the world if they end up with a better draft pick.
00:36Did you think, though, in the first half that they were going to win that game yesterday?
00:42You know what?
00:43I picked them to win 17-14 or 17-13 based on a few things.
00:50Number one, just thinking, you know, maybe they could beat somebody they're not supposed to beat.
00:55They have beaten the Patriots in 10 of the previous 13 games at Hard Rock Stadium,
01:00and you know how much personnel in New England was missing, right?
01:03A.J. Brown, Romeo Dobbs, Matt Collins, Travion Henderson, Hunter Henry went out in the second half.
01:10So, yeah, I thought they had a really good shot.
01:12But, look, they didn't play badly.
01:15They just got beat by a better team.
01:17But the Dolphins were better in a lot of the measurables, right?
01:20Third downs, penalties, red zone, just kind of the special teams,
01:27and then just kind of the self-inflicted damage that they had had in other losses.
01:32They played okay.
01:36Yeah, they shouldn't be despondent about the way they performed.
01:39Yeah, Perk, we were saying that they're ahead of the curve because, like, I don't –
01:44as the week go past, Perk, I don't forget what we're dealing with.
01:47I don't forget that we're going to be the least talented team on every single field.
01:50But to play with the Chiefs until the fourth quarter, seven-point game,
01:54to play with the Patriots now, playoff team, the way they did through three quarters,
01:57like, I'm looking at it as positive.
01:59Am I being too silly about this?
02:02I don't think they're ahead of the curve,
02:04but I think they're doing better than we thought in a few areas.
02:08You know, maybe Malik Willis is better than you thought.
02:11Maybe the offensive line is better than you thought.
02:14Maybe the rookie draft class is better than you thought.
02:17Maybe half is better than you thought.
02:18But to say that they're ahead of the curve,
02:21I would think if they had two, maybe three wins, they would be ahead of the curve.
02:25But right now, I mean, the over-under on wins was four and a half.
02:31You know, I'm still sticking with five.
02:35Oh, stop it.
02:36Come on.
02:36You're going to say that up until week 17, Perk, when they're one and 15?
02:41The math don't sound working, huh?
02:44Right, Crowder, you're right until the wheels fall off, baby.
02:47Because if they end up being five and 12, and I gave up on them in week seven,
02:52I'm going to look stupid.
02:53So I'm riding it.
02:55I think you're going to look stupid if you keep saying that they're going to hit five wins.
02:59I think you have a greater chance of looking stupid.
03:04I'm convicted, huh?
03:05I'm convicted.
03:06There's a difference.
03:07There's a difference between being stupid and being convicted.
03:10Yeah, yeah.
03:11That's what I'm telling myself anyway.
03:14It's working.
03:15Hey, Perk, did you take advantage of your free socks yesterday
03:19that the Dolphins were giving out to the media?
03:20Great call.
03:21No, no, I didn't, man.
03:23But, yeah, they had free socks because it was raining so much,
03:27and it was so wet.
03:28But the area where we parked, they figured your feet were going to get submerged.
03:33So they did have free Dolphin socks for you to take.
03:37You didn't have to return them if you used them,
03:39but you did have to return the towel if you used the towel.
03:42They weren't giving away those towels for free.
03:46That's a great little handout, man.
03:48A pair of socks?
03:51Yeah, and get some NFL-issued socks.
03:53They're nice and thick and cushiony.
03:55Well, yeah, I should have just jacked some socks just for the heck of it.
03:58Remember, we did that broadcast at the Panthers Arena.
04:01It was either last season or the season before,
04:03and it was a pouring rainstorm.
04:05My socks were all wet, and somebody went down to the Pantherland store
04:08and just stole me a pair of socks, I think.
04:11Okay, I ended up with some good Panther socks.
04:14You didn't tell that story too much.
04:17I'm just looking on the Hard Rock app perk.
04:19So the Dolphins, to end with more than four and a half wins this season,
04:26is plus $325.
04:28I don't know if you're a gambler, but if you bet $100,
04:31you'd win $325 if they have five wins or more.
04:38Well, you know what?
04:39So here's the way the NFL season goes.
04:42Y'all know this.
04:43Indy is looking a little bit more winnable now, right?
04:46Now, DeForest Buckner is gone.
04:48Quentin Nelson is gone.
04:49They say Jonathan Taylor is going to stay,
04:51but I think Josh Downs is they're talking about trading him away.
04:55So maybe that's more winnable,
04:57and you do have the Jets coming up at the end of the month.
05:00So maybe possibly you could get out of November with two more wins,
05:04and you could go into December, January with three wins.
05:07And, you know, then maybe you sneak up on New England up there.
05:12Maybe they don't need that game.
05:13That gets you to four, and then you just have to knock somebody off.
05:16Five wins.
05:17Easy, baby.
05:18Easy, baby.
05:19You actually made it sound pretty easy.
05:22Yeah.
05:23Easy.
05:24Easy.
05:25I don't know.
05:26I came a little late.
05:27Did y'all talk about Chris Johnson yet?
05:29Because I need answers.
05:30Oh, no.
05:31Yeah, we forgot.
05:31I need answers.
05:32No.
05:33I am a football guy.
05:35I've coached.
05:35I've played for years.
05:36I coached for everything.
05:38I watched since I was a baby.
05:40I cannot tell you what happened when Chris Johnson got to the back of Drake May.
05:45Just please explain it to me.
05:47I have no idea, Crowder.
05:49And you know what?
05:49I didn't see him in the locker room last night, so I didn't get a chance to ask him.
05:53I don't think he ran out.
05:55Chris Johnson is a pretty stand-up guy, and I think if we asked him, he would probably tell us
06:00what actually happened.
06:01I don't know if he was thinking, you know, Drake May is going to step up, so I'm going to
06:06go up here and meet him.
06:08I don't know if he was thinking.
06:09I don't know what he was thinking.
06:11Maybe it's a penalty if I hit him too hard or if I hit him in the back.
06:15I don't know why Chris Johnson went low, but that was a rib-breaking strip sack, right?
06:21That's what you thought when Chris Johnson was running up to him, and it ended up being that, like, he
06:26hit him in the thigh and slid down, and Drake May completed the pass.
06:30I have no idea what happened on that play.
06:33I wish he hit him in the thigh.
06:34I don't think that he hit him in the thigh.
06:36At least there's something to celebrate on that play.
06:40You gave, in the Sun-Sentinel, you gave, when you did the letter grades for yesterday's game, you gave coaching
06:46a C+.
06:46I'm wondering if that's the grade you would give Jeff Halfley through the first seven games.
06:53Yeah, probably.
06:54You know, I think that they are a better team now than they were before the Raiders game, the season
07:01opener, and they're better in a lot of ways.
07:03So, I think that the offensive line is better.
07:07The run game, without Devon Achan, is better than you thought it would be.
07:13I think that the special teams' difficulties are going to be there all year.
07:17There have been some mindless mistakes.
07:19You talk about Chris Johnson.
07:20We had the Bradley Pinion just dropping the ball on the punt.
07:24That was also kind of a crazy one.
07:27But special teams, the last two weeks, have picked it up.
07:30And I say that even though Zane Gonzalez missed a 43-yard field goal yesterday.
07:34But they're better in a lot of ways.
07:37The secondary has come together.
07:39The cornerbacks, in particular, have come together a little bit better than I thought.
07:44So, yeah, I would probably give him a C+.
07:46Just understanding that he was really up against it.
07:51And to do this without Devon Achan, that's really something.
07:56So, yeah, I would probably give him a C+.
07:58I think that's a fair grade.
08:00Perk, should Zane Gonzalez still be on this roster at the end of the year?
08:03He has one more elevation from the practice squad.
08:06I don't want to make too much of one miss.
08:08But you cut Riley Patterson, who was the most accurate kicker in Dolphins history last season.
08:14You elevate Zane Gonzalez.
08:16And he put one basically into the broadcast booth.
08:19That's how badly he missed it in the fourth quarter.
08:23Yeah, you know what?
08:24It's interesting, Solana.
08:26Happily was asked about Zane Gonzalez today.
08:28And he said, no, for now, we're going to move forward with the idea.
08:33Excuse me, that he's our kicker.
08:35And he was Chris Tabor's kicker in two previous stops.
08:38I want to say Carolina and somewhere else.
08:42So, I know that Taves has some faith in him.
08:44I do think it's interesting that Bradley Pinion has handled a couple of kickoffs the last couple of weeks.
08:50Since Zane Gonzalez has been here.
08:53I asked Pinion about that.
08:54He said that this was the first year that he hadn't done kickoffs in his 11-year career when Riley
09:00Patterson was here.
09:01So, I thought that was interesting.
09:02But, yeah, I think Zane is going to be safe.
09:05I mean, it's only been two games.
09:07And he is a favorite of Chris Tabor's.
09:09But, yeah, that field goal, they didn't lose the game, obviously, on that field goal miss.
09:14But you would have cut it to 24-16.
09:19And then, I guess, that last touchdown that they scored, it would have made it 24-22.
09:26And you could have had a two-point conversion to tie the game as opposed to the two-point conversion
09:32to make it 24-21.
09:33So, it kind of sort of factored in.
09:36But I don't see it being enough to get Zane Gonzalez released.
09:39But he needs to watch it, though.
09:42And, Perko, on a positive note, well, two different ways.
09:45First, Top had some pressure early.
09:47See, his chops starting to come around.
09:49And also, well, Caden Proctor couldn't have helped survive now for getting his ass whooped all game.
09:54But did you see – did you notice Caden Proctor's, you know, missing from that side?
10:00Did you notice a difference that he missed a game with that concussion?
10:03You know, I asked Patrick Paul that question.
10:05And he said, yeah, he said, you know, Jarrett Kingston played well.
10:09But, of course, you know, we did miss Caden Proctor.
10:12And you saw how well Proctor was playing.
10:14And so, you know, that's what Patrick Paul had said.
10:18And, you know, I do think that Proctor was missed.
10:22I don't know if it was a game-changing absence.
10:25But he was missed.
10:27And then what was the first thing you asked me about, brother?
10:29Chop.
10:29Chop was like he had a couple moves.
10:31I don't know if he had his eyes open.
10:32But he had a couple moves.
10:34Yeah, no, Chop did pretty well.
10:37You know what was interesting about Chop, though, was that he didn't start.
10:41He came in on the second play of the game.
10:44And it was the same thing in the third quarter.
10:46He didn't start.
10:47But he came in on the next play.
10:49And I messed up.
10:51I asked Chop about that today in the press conference.
10:54And I kind of – I shouldn't have put him on the spot like that.
10:57I forgot to ask Halfley.
10:58And I shouldn't have asked Chop.
11:00And Chop just kind of looked at me.
11:01And he was like, well, I was just a coach's choice.
11:03I don't know why they didn't start Chop.
11:06But Chop did show some – I guess a relentless effort yesterday.
11:12I said in the first half that I figured Chop was going to have a sack or two sacks
11:17just by how close he was getting to the quarterback.
11:20And it did turn out that he had two sacks.
11:23Chop now has four sacks.
11:26That's through – he's through six games, right,
11:29and he missed one with the concussion.
11:31He had four sacks through 15 games last year.
11:34As a rookie, he had six sacks.
11:36So he's coming up on his career best.
11:39You know, it's only been two seasons and it's only six sacks.
11:42But just kind of to show a little bit of appreciation for Chop,
11:46yeah, he could have a career high in sacks by, what, two more games
11:51or something like that.
11:52Where did you just get to, Park?
11:54You on the beach?
11:55No, no, I just came home.
11:57I just pulled up in my place.
12:00So I just got out of the car, yeah.
12:02Well, you had a long day at the facility?
12:05No, actually it was a very short day because half-feet's at 2.45.
12:09So I got up there at 2.45.
12:11I had already written my story.
12:13All I had to do was a report card.
12:14I go up there on Monday to interview half and players.
12:18That's it.
12:19Man, home by 4.39.
12:20Look at you.
12:22That is a good work day.
12:23You know, I'm not asking for any sympathy here.
12:26You know, it's a short Monday or a short day.
12:30Anybody, I'll let you go.
12:31Anybody ask half-feet about Ollie Gordon?
12:35Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:36And he said that he was just going to kind of keep that between him and Ollie.
12:40But, you know, I asked Juju Brents about it.
12:43And because, you know, I said to Juju, you know, you had that call earlier in the year
12:47where you had the taunting, and so I was just wondering if they had a clear understanding
12:52from the refs of what constitutes taunting or unsportsmanlike conduct or if you say the
12:58magic word or something like that.
13:00And Juju said, yeah, we do have an understanding.
13:04And even though I had asked Juju about this before, and he said that his taunting call was,
13:09you know, it was borderline, but you just keep it moving.
13:12So that's what he said yesterday, today, that, you know, we just have to understand the rules
13:17and play within the rules.
13:18But, yeah, I just wonder if that's kind of a moving target on the unsportsmanlike conduct
13:25that one ref, the magic word is this, or with another ref taunting is this, but to the same
13:31ref, you know, it might not be when another guy does.
13:35And I just don't know if it's a concrete line.
13:37I wanted to see if the Dolphins understood it.
13:39But Chop said that they have a pretty good understanding.
13:42I mean, Juju said they have a pretty good understanding of it.
13:45So we'll see moving forward.
13:47But I wonder if he did say something.
13:49Yeah, it's been Chop, Juju, and Ollie.
13:50But did he do, we don't know what he said.
13:52Like, if it was just typical jawing, I thought it was a really bogus call.
13:56I wonder if he said something in particular that the ref felt, you know, obligated to flag it.
14:04I don't know.
14:04Didn't really look like a penalty-worthy play to me.
14:09Yeah, that's what I'm thinking is that Ollie said the magic word, whatever the magic word is.
14:14You know, I know sometimes in the NBA it's MF or, you know, who knows what it might be in
14:21the NFL.
14:22I know it's usually a pretty liberal, a lot of rope that they give you.
14:26But once you say it, you get that flag.
14:29So I'm thinking that that's probably what happened with Ollie.
14:32Sticks and stones can break my bones and words can never hurt me.
14:35Yeah, but you know what?
14:37If you start insulting the McRib, I'll throw a flag on you.
14:44I think cussing, I'm a grown-ass man.
14:47I can cuss whenever I want to cuss.
14:49I agree.
14:50But if you start defiling the McRib verbally, we got problems.
14:55That's an ejection.
14:56That's right.
14:57All right.
14:58Read Chris Perkins' work in the Sun Sentinel on the Sun Sentinel app, sunsentinel.com.
15:03Follow Perk on social media and listen to him on Game Day Uncensored with Solana and Tobin.
15:08Appreciate your time, Perk.
15:10All right, fellas.
15:11I'm in the elevator.
15:12I'm headed upstairs.
15:12I'll talk to you all later.
15:13You cooking dinner or you going out?
15:16No, I'm cooking, man.
15:17I'm having chicken.
15:18I'm having chicken with potatoes and some collard greens, actually.
15:23Woo, look at that.
15:24How are you preparing the potatoes?
15:28I'm going to probably have a baked potato.
15:31I might slice it up with some onion and garlic and bake it, but I'll probably have a baked potato.
15:37Perk, you cook collard greens on a Monday?
15:41Yeah, yeah, yeah.
15:47Cut them up and...
15:49But...
15:51Yeah.
15:53Let me...
15:55Over here.
15:56Long process.
15:59I...
16:00Green.
16:05Yeah, I'll do it.
16:09The minute...
16:11Next.
16:17Hey, these are harmony, Greg.
16:24How many grits?
16:26How many grits?
16:26What's that?
16:28Collard greens all crunchy, no flavor.
16:32I'm about to say a minute.
16:34We'll see you, Perk.
16:37Put the roughness in your diet.
16:39All right, I'll see you all.
16:40Heavy on the rough.
16:42All right, we'll take a break.
16:45I did not know how to prepare collard greens.
16:48I did look confused as to why you said you're making them on a Monday, but...
16:52It takes hours.
16:54Really?
16:55Yeah, collard greens take a long time.
16:56You got to break...
16:57You got to cook them long enough to break down those thick stalks and all that stuff.
17:01Yeah, I don't know.
17:02We'll make collard greens together.
17:04What is it?
17:05It's just like you eat it as a side?
17:08Yeah, it's like a spinach or a broccoli.
17:10It's a green vegetable on the side.
17:13You have to put...
17:14You know, a lot of people's spinach, it's soaked in butter or whatever.
17:18You have to give it flavor, I'm assuming.
17:20Yeah, but you can give it flavor with onions and peppers and garlic.
17:25Some people put pork in.
17:26I like pork in mine.
17:27If you don't have pork, we can put turkey in there.
17:29Actually, turkey necks.
17:30You love those.
17:31You have minute turkey necks.
17:32Yeah, man.
17:34Me and Pastor Troy.
17:36Who is it?
17:36Project Pat?
17:37Project Pat.
17:38I'm sorry.
17:38Church's fried chicken.
17:42We ain't going to let Project Pat come to the cookout with that foolishness.
17:46What are you talking about?
17:48That's the hit of the cookout.
17:51Church's chicken.
17:53Chicken wings and chicken thighs.
17:55We got to take a break here.
17:57We all agree.
17:59Anniversary worm.
18:00You're doing it lyric for lyric.
18:01It's not like it's the throwaway.
18:06Everybody, Google or Twitter search Project Pat, Church's fried chicken.
18:11He did a collab with them.
18:13I think it is a banger.
18:16I think it's questionable.
18:18All right.
18:19He must have some IRS debt.
18:23Gotta have some IRS debt.
18:28Anniversary.
18:29You don't think that song came from the heart, huh?
18:30You don't think that was like, you don't think that was like Piano Man from Billy Joel, where
18:35he was just singing from the heart.
18:37Like the normal collabs.
18:39Hey, Jay-Z called.
18:40Hey, Rihanna called.
18:41Hey, Church's called.
18:43They wanted to jump on the track.
18:45Man, call Church's back, brother.
18:49That's not how it works, huh?
18:49That's not how it works, huh?
18:50That's not how it works, huh?
18:50That's not how it works, huh?
18:50That's not how it works, huh?
18:50You
