00:00As the man in robes climbed down from the stands and strolled straight onto the World Cup pitch,
00:05the French players genuinely had no idea who he was. He marched up to the referee and he started
00:10ordering the Kuwaiti team to walk off the field. See, France had been thrashing Kuwait 3-1 during
00:16the first group stage of the 1982 World Cup. And moments earlier, France had calmly slotted in what
00:23looked like a fourth. But when they did, the Kuwaiti defenders were looking around in confusion.
00:28See, they'd heard a whistle from the crowd. And they'd assumed the referee had already stopped
00:34play. They begged the referee, Miroslav Stupa, to disallow the goal. But he just waved their
00:40protests away and the goal stood. And that's when the man in robes had seen enough. Because this was
00:45Sheikh Farhad al-Akhmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, a member of the Kuwaiti royal family who also happened to be
00:52the president of the Kuwaiti Football Association. And he wasn't about to let his country be humiliated,
00:58by a goal he was certain shouldn't count. So, he did what any self-respecting royal does when
01:03things don't go his way. He threw a fit, threatening to drag his nation's entire team
01:08off the pitch unless the goal was struck from the record. It seemed like an absurd thing to do.
01:14After all, the referee calls the shots on the football field, not some Kuwaiti royal. But
01:19embarrassingly, the referee eventually crumbled. He reversed his own call and wiped off a perfectly
01:24legitimate goal, making this the only time in history a World Cup goal has been overturned
01:30on the request of someone other than a FIFA official. But the royal tantrum didn't really
01:35change much in the outcome of the game. Minutes later, France simply scored again and won the
01:40match 4-1 regardless. Stupa never refereed at a World Cup again, the shake was hit with a fine from
01:46FIFA, and Kuwait, in their first and only ever World Cup appearance, lost their next game to England
01:52England and went home.
