Willard and Dibs react to the Warriors come-from-behind victory over the Suns after Draymond Green's ejection. What is Draymond's impact on the Warriors?
Transcript
00:00Booker the other way. He seemed hesitant. Malawatch got free inside and now Draymond throws him down.
00:05A technical foul on Draymond. Draymond got thrown to the hardwood.
00:10Of course, here comes Dylan Brooks in there. He has to get something going.
00:14And Draymond wrestled away by Warrior Security.
00:18They're doing a very good job. Of course, Dylan Brooks has to come in there.
00:22The initial ruling on the floor is a foul on Green followed by a technical foul for the throwdown.
00:27We didn't have a double tackle foul between Brooks and Green. Therefore, Green is ejected.
00:34We will shoot one shot for the technical and then we will play off the second shot for the end
00:40one by Phoenix.
00:42Wait a minute. How can they do one shot for a technical for Phoenix if the Warriors don't get one,
00:48if Brooks got a technical?
00:54The area is Draymond Green. You're listening to Willard and Dibs on 95.7 The Game.
01:00Coming to you live from the Laugh and Monk Studios.
01:05Call on me. I have the answer.
01:07Yes, let's go to Mark in the back.
01:10It's because two minus one equals one.
01:13Right, right.
01:14There was a double technical on Draymond Green and Dylan Brooks, but there was a prior technical on Draymond Green
01:22for throwing another human to the ground and then being removed by Warrior Security.
01:27That was also a technical.
01:28So that's why this son shot a free throw and the Warriors didn't. Did I get it right?
01:32I think you did. I mean, as far as I can tell. And honestly, like the first technical on Draymond
01:38was a common foul, which is upgraded to a technical foul.
01:43So did he get to shoot two shots as a result of that? Because it was actually one shot because
01:48he actually made the shot.
01:49It was an and one. There was the initial foul, which was him grabbing Malawatch.
01:54And then the technical was technically the dead ball throwing of him to the ground.
01:58Right. So I think they shot two free throws.
01:59They did. Yeah. And Malawatch actually missed his and he made his technical and, you know, two minus one equals
02:08one.
02:09So he gets the one and then Malawatch gets the and one, which I don't even know how he made
02:14the shot when Draymond basically had him around the neck, the waist, my neck and my back.
02:20He's a large man. Right.
02:22He's a very large man.
02:23But he was being tackled. He was being tackled by somebody smaller than him.
02:28But somebody who like the Amino Lenore tackling Brock Bowers and throwing him to the floor and Bowers being like,
02:35what are you doing?
02:37I would go a little bit with more of a Malik Mustafa because Draymond Green has that sort of energy
02:42when it comes to like, I don't know, making a tackle.
02:46And Malawatch is seven foot two, dude.
02:49Yes.
02:50Eight inches.
02:51Two hundred.
02:52He's a slender guy.
02:54He is.
02:54He has even working out.
02:56He has been.
02:57Yeah.
02:58And anyway, it didn't take a lot for Draymond Green at six, five to go ahead and, you know, first
03:04of all, he gets knocked to the ground, bounces up and is able to corral Malawatch and throw him down.
03:11Throw it down, big man.
03:12I'm sorry if this just sounds silly, but I, I don't have it in me to get hot and bothered
03:21when Draymond loses it.
03:23I just don't have it in me.
03:26That's what he does.
03:28That's what he's always done.
03:30It's sometimes I, okay, look, I get it.
03:34I get how it wears on people.
03:36I get when it's not combined with an elite team, you know, you were able to overlook stuff when they're
03:43in the middle of winning rings and, um, whatever.
03:46And now it, it sort of feels like, okay, this isn't fun anymore.
03:51And, and so the Draymond antics, as everybody always calls them, it, it hits people a different way.
03:58I get it.
03:59I get it.
04:00Um, but I, there's two things that I will say about it.
04:03One, I just don't have it in me to get upset about it because it's Draymond green.
04:09Like, do you even, do you even blink when he does this now?
04:13You're like, yeah, that's Draymond green.
04:15That's what he does.
04:17Right.
04:17So it's just, it doesn't, it doesn't get me going.
04:21It's like, I sort of expect it when I sit down and watch the Warriors play, especially if they're losing.
04:25Right.
04:26And so they open up the half and they're down three and Phoenix probably goes on a 10 to three
04:31run and things are slipping away.
04:33And they're not playing with that intensity that everybody wants them to play with.
04:37And so two minutes in Draymond gets knocked down, gets up, you get knocked down, you get back up again.
04:42And then you throw a guy to the ground and here comes Dylan Brooks.
04:46And now I'm going to grab you by the Jersey.
04:47And, you know, he did everything, but throw hands.
04:50And I'm glad he didn't.
04:51Cause then he would have been suspended for multiple games.
04:53And I love Tim Roy with the call because Warrior Security came in and had to pull him away.
04:58And I didn't realize that they had that many security members all in their black jackets.
05:04And, you know, they do it, I guess, to kind of blend in to the scenery.
05:09But as soon as that thing started to blow up a little bit, like four or five of them immediately
05:13came in and grabbed Draymond and pulled him away.
05:16Right.
05:16Which is elite.
05:17Which also means they were ready for it too.
05:20Right.
05:20Just like I would argue we kind of all should have been.
05:23Like it's just, so anyway, and then the larger question about it.
05:27And again, I really, I get it.
05:29If you don't like watching it, that's fine.
05:31Like everybody gets to like what or not like what they're watching.
05:34But from a strategic warrior standpoint, that's going to be the question I run with today with regard to anybody
05:42who's like,
05:43did you see how much better they are without him?
05:46Why don't we trade his ass?
05:48Why don't we bench him?
05:49I'm sick of this whole, if that were really the way the Warriors franchise saw it,
05:57why would they continue to conduct themselves the way they do?
06:02Is it possible that this is a little bit more, whether you want to call it strategic, than we give
06:10it credit for?
06:11Or is there just, is there a lot that Draymond still brings to the table that we can't see on
06:20our television set?
06:21Because it's a professional organization and Steph Curry, for one, has literally, he's balked at the idea of being on
06:28like a retirement tour.
06:29He wants to win, and he wants to win desperately.
06:33And they've won five basketball games in a row.
06:37And so that's my question.
06:39Why do the Warriors put up with it?
06:43There's got to be a reason.
06:46And I reject the idea that it's loyalty.
06:49That doesn't make any sense to me.
06:50The Warriors have not decided that loyalty is more important than winning basketball games.
06:54When you've pointed out other cases where loyalty has not necessarily been shown,
06:59and you can go to Kaminga and Poole, and I think Klay Thompson would weigh in with his hand up
07:04and say,
07:04yeah, I wasn't really feeling that same level of loyalty.
07:07And the interesting piece for me, Mark, is, so Draymond Green throws Manawak to the floor,
07:13gets a tee, gets another tee, and now he's gone.
07:16And Booker makes the free throw.
07:17You're down 11.
07:18Over the next four minutes, the Warriors go on a 16-5 run, and they tie the game.
07:23Now, it's either, and you can look at this however you want to look at it,
07:27it's either because Draymond was out, and Draymond's not a good basketball player,
07:31so once you got rid of Draymond Green, now you were free to actually play good basketball,
07:35or you could look at it the other way and say,
07:38Draymond Green lit a fire under his teammates and showed them that we need to play harder,
07:44we need to play tougher, and as a result of that action,
07:47they went out there and played better basketball.
07:49Would you like to hear what the chef had to say about it?
07:51Who?
07:52The chef!
07:52I would.
07:53He answered that exact question, and here it is.
07:57I mean, it was a combination of that moment,
07:59and we got to have our brother's back when he defends us,
08:02but it was also understanding this is one of those games,
08:06most of the guys on the back-to-back,
08:08Phoenix had been off for a couple days,
08:09they started one, it's only their fifth game?
08:12They were one and three,
08:13and knew that they were going to come out playing desperate,
08:15so they played unbelievable in the first half.
08:18We just tried to, as they say, weather the storm,
08:21just execute, give ourselves a chance,
08:23and that third quarter was the run that we needed to get back into it,
08:27and then it's just a game of execution and competitiveness down the stretch,
08:31and thankfully we just made a couple more plays,
08:33but definitely that moment just kept us in the moment, for sure.
08:36Okay, so Steph, by the way, did you hear his little quick aside in the middle of that,
08:41where he goes, this is only the Suns' fifth game?
08:44Yeah.
08:44Why have we played eight games and they've only played five games?
08:46And they've played two back-to-backs,
08:47and I mean, they're playing their fifth game, right?
08:51Steph's like, what are you all doing to me?
08:52Right.
08:53About to turn 39 years old.
08:55And they've already played their eighth game.
08:56Yeah.
08:56And so, you know, when Draymond Green gets the uno-dos-adios treatment,
09:02in comes Charles Bassey, who will join us coming up here shortly.
09:05In 17 minutes.
09:06And we can ask Charles Bassey what he was thinking and what his reaction was,
09:10because he comes off the bench and he had six points in the third quarter,
09:14he grabbed four rebounds, and he was a big part of that comeback.
09:17He was a plus 13 in the quarter,
09:20so when you're Charles Bassey and you're seeing this go down,
09:23you know, what were you and the rest of the team thinking about exactly,
09:27you know, how much that motivated you?
09:29Yeah.
09:30Yeah.
09:30Like, that's where my mind goes.
09:34So, Steph Curry, for whatever reason, and again,
09:39let's remove the idea that it's just loyalty or, you know,
09:43he's got naked pictures or whatever, all the things that we always hear.
09:48Steph Curry believes that that moment shifted the energy
09:53of the room and helped the Warriors out.
09:57That's what Steph Curry thinks.
09:58So, you can disagree with it, but Steph Curry and Steve Kerr and, you know,
10:05Steve Kerr came to the post-game thing and they're like,
10:06do you have any reaction to the Draymond thing?
10:08He's like, no.
10:10That's it.
10:10No.
10:12Like, this is so old hat.
10:14It's so nothing, Berger.
10:15They're actually don't know how we could get to the point where we don't see this
10:19as strategic.
10:22Like, this doesn't even register for them.
10:25Their Richter scale goes nowhere when this happens.
10:28Let me read this text to you and then we're going to go back to the phones.
10:32925, because I think this is where a lot of people are.
10:34So, 925, thank you for the descriptive text here.
10:38A grown man who is a champion and highly paid professional loses his mind and needs
10:42to be removed via security and it's all good because he's Steph's little bodyguard
10:48and he's got a few rings?
10:50I reject that man.
10:52His behavior is over the top and if most of anyone else on this planet conducted themselves
10:58in that way, it would be seen as unacceptable.
11:02He's a loud mouth and a bully.
11:04That's just what it is.
11:07How do you react to that?
11:08I think that you can look at that and you can look at his behavior and you can see that
11:12over the course of his career, but at the same time, I think that him being a loud mouth
11:17to me doesn't really fit in what actually happened last night.
11:21Him being a bully, well, you could look at that and I've often looked at the players that
11:26he inflicts these fouls upon.
11:27They're usually either younger or smaller or softer or weaker and so that part of it,
11:34I totally understand, but I do think that last night in particular, there was a message
11:39behind his actions and it wasn't a cheap shot.
11:42This is not Dylan Brooks going after GP2 when he's airborne going for a dunk.
11:47This is him basically corralling the opponent and throwing him down.
11:51It was a flagrant.
11:52I thought it should have been a flagrant too, not a technical, but then you get a second
11:56technical because their bully comes in and faces your bully.
12:00I do think that this one was more intentional as a message to send to his own team.
12:05Yeah, so here's kind of what I would say about that.
12:10If you want to call him a loud mouth and a bully and you hate the antics or the behavior,
12:16that's totally fine.
12:17It actually makes sense.
12:18I think most people get it.
12:20The warrior's response to you is, yeah, but it helps.
12:25And is that a good enough response?
12:27Now, I don't want to make this into a certain serious conversation, but it is stunning to
12:33me sometimes because you can see the behavior on TV.
12:37You find it and I'm pointing, whoever feels this way, you find it to be unacceptable behavior.
12:44No other job in America would allow this.
12:48So this is unacceptable behavior.
12:51Next sentence.
12:52Hey, the Niners should sign Tyreek Hill.
12:56Well, just think about Dre Greenlaw.
12:58Like, how does Dre Greenlaw play?
13:00Dre Greenlaw is out there trying to inflict as much punishment as he can.
13:05And if you are off the sideline across the white apron, he might go out there and give
13:09you a give you one, give you a 15.
13:11And that's part of the nature of the business.
13:14Like, do you understand how many people you're watching on a weekly basis on your TV who have
13:19conducted themselves in an unacceptable way?
13:22And I mean, like, in a real way.
13:25You got Josh Jacobs on your fantasy team?
13:28I hope he scored a touchdown for you last week.
13:31Woo-hoo!
13:32But this man, Draymond, I don't like his antics.
13:35I don't like that he's a loudmouth.
13:39And a bully.
13:39And a bully.
13:41So let's stop the hypocrisy because we have completely signed up and accepted the idea
13:48anything for winning.
13:50I don't really like it.
13:52I don't subscribe to it.
13:53But for me, my line is human beingness of it all, both on and off the field.
14:01If you don't like Draymond's antics, that's fine.
14:03But that's the Warriors' response.
14:05The Warriors' response is, actually, this guy has controlled himself off of the court
14:11in a damn near perfect way for 15 years.
14:14And we believe that what he brings to the organization and the court really, really help us win.
14:21So that's my question.
14:22Like, why would anyone, if the Warriors, who have done a ton of winning, if they feel like
14:28this helps them, why would this bother you so much when it's all controlled to the court?
14:35This isn't out into the world, into the real stuff that's inappropriate, that's also all over our television set every
14:42single week.
14:43That's my question.
14:45Like, I don't think the Warriors are, like, I don't think all of them are all wrong on this idea.
14:52They seem to be completely on the same page here.
14:55Well, they're on the same page to the extent that he keeps getting extensions, and he keeps
14:59being a Golden State Warrior, and I don't think that he's going to be somebody who gets traded
15:02at the deadline, etc.
15:04And this reminds me a little bit of baseball, where I always talk about, you know, if the
15:10other team is going to throw at our guys and hit our guys four or five times in a three
15:14-game
15:14series, well, you have to go out there and you've got to dot somebody.
15:17You're going to have to throw at somebody, and that is something that you and I go back and
15:20forth on, whether or not that's actually effective.
15:23But this, to me, was akin to having your pitcher go out there and dot somebody, because, you
15:29know, they were getting pushed around.
15:31Phoenix had the control of the game.
15:33Warriors were playing three games and four nights, and they clearly were kind of a little
15:37bit listless.
15:38The game was slipping away, and so Draymond thought that this would be the best way, and
15:42I'm putting myself in his head, but this was the best way that he could light a fire under
15:47his teammates and say, look, we're not just going to let Phoenix come in here and blow us
15:51out.
15:51We're going to, you know, draw the line in the sand.
15:54Tim in San Diego, let's take some calls on this.
15:56Charles Bass is going to join us in 10 minutes.
15:58Hey, Tim, thanks for calling and waiting.
16:00What's up?
16:02Yeah, hey.
16:03Thanks, guys.
16:05Yeah, you know what?
16:06Count me in is like kind of, you know, Draymond Green is, you know, you look at over the last
16:13four years, five years, we've been mid to bad as far as even with him playing at a better
16:23level than he is playing right now.
16:24He was a minus six last night.
16:28Even Steve Kerr said, you know, we have a five man out.
16:32There's no way you can play in today's NBA with four guys on offense, which is what Draymond
16:40Green is when he's on the court.
16:42I mean, we got killed in the opening half and opening quarter with him.
16:48And I just think the fact that he's having to play center all the time, we're going to
16:54see him act out more because he just can't handle it physically.
16:56And I know we need him because we don't have Porzingis.
17:01But yeah, it's, this is, if we, if we lose that game, it's a different narrative.
17:07This continues.
17:08It's going to be a negative narrative.
17:11He's just doesn't, when he's on the court, we're basically playing four and five.
17:17I mean, Bassey, you saw how well we played with Bassey.
17:22And of course, we're going to, we're going to, we're going to go hard because Bassey's
17:26playing for his life.
17:27But he's going to go balls out.
17:30I mean, that's just, that's just it.
17:32You know, Draymond or no Draymond, Bassey's going to go, you know, his, his NBA career
17:37is on the line.
17:38Sure, sure, sure, sure.
17:39So, so anyway, that's, that's all I got to say.
17:43Okay.
17:43Thanks for having me.
17:44Yeah, Tim.
17:45Tim, thank you.
17:45Yeah, appreciate it, man.
17:46Thanks for, thanks for the call.
17:48Look, I, I, I'd love to split the difference on this.
17:50I think the Warriors have, have even said this publicly, like this time for Draymond's
17:55role to lessen.
17:56You know what I mean?
17:57Everybody's like, yeah, it's Steph load management night because of the runner's knee.
18:00And then, oh, by the way, Draymond's off too.
18:03Why?
18:04Well, just cause.
18:05Bilateral back tightness.
18:06Sure.
18:07Well, all of those, uh, words that's over the middle.
18:10Yeah, whatever.
18:11Like, yes, his role should be lessened.
18:13I guess what I want to keep trumpeting, though, is they still think he really adds some measure
18:21of value.
18:22And I don't disagree.
18:23I still think, you know, I, it's undersold that when Chris stops Porzingis, like turns
18:30a 180 and heads to get teeth done in France when the season's starting, that the Warriors
18:36they, they didn't completely crumble with no center.
18:40Nobody knew anything about Charles Bassey a week and a half ago.
18:44Now you're excited.
18:45But how many six, six players in the NBA can be like, I got it for a couple of weeks.
18:50I'll be your center.
18:52Well, he's been doing that for a decade.
18:54Exactly.
18:55Exactly.
18:56That like, don't undersell that.
18:57And he still does it smaller doses and not as effective, but he still does it.
19:03And I just, I think the Warriors see that.
19:06And, and so therefore, yeah, yeah, they're not, they're not going to haul off and cut
19:12him because they don't like the way he's behaving.
19:14Right.
19:14He's the lifeblood of the energy that they need somebody to bring on the court.
19:19And we can all talk about plus minus, and it's a small sample, but through the first
19:23half of the game, he was a minus one and Yaxel and Will Richard were minus 13 pods was a
19:30minus
19:30eight.
19:31So when Draymond was out there with the starting group and when he wasn't with the starting
19:35group, they were worse off when he was not on the floor.
