00:00You can't move at all. I come into the welfare office and I break down there and you go home.
00:08How long are you going? Because the officer there in there, woman getting on real bad and saying,
00:13oh, you come balling here the other day with the medical, with the this, with the this.
00:16So I explain everything to her, so you can't move.
00:20If you see how she getting on, she have no heart, no nothing, and still saying, bring him in.
00:25The culmination of weeks of stress, frustration, and being given the runaround.
00:30You may have come across this video on social media of Alicia Kelly after her interactions with officers and officials
00:37at the Port of Spain Social Services Center.
00:40But what brought things to this point, Kurt Rodney tells us.
00:45Not good at all. Speech and playing a game.
01:10Social welfare officers insisted that Mr. Rodney be present for his situation to be assessed in order to receive financial
01:17assistance.
01:18But Kurt and Alicia live on a hill in St. Anne's.
01:22Their home can only be accessed through a track of the paved road, posing a serious challenge in moving Kurt.
01:29All she kept insisting, even though he cannot move, they don't want to hear that.
01:33All she wants is that he must come in. We must find a way to bring him in regards if
01:38he can't move.
01:39And I showed her in the medical report. I showed her they said that how 90% of his body
01:44he can't use.
01:45I mean, if somebody's seen that, what are they supposed to think, you know?
01:49And they didn't want to send an officer.
01:52No. She never once said she'll do something like that.
01:54And I just, that's what made me break down because he doesn't know what people are going through.
01:59And I just lost it.
02:01Alicia is appealing for social workers to show more sympathy to persons who come to the offices in need of
02:07help.
02:07Especially to help the pussy there because a lot of people go in there and people don't realize you need
02:13empathy
02:13because you have a million things in your head.
02:16Go in and ask, go this and tell you all these things to do and you're frazzled and you don't
02:20know how to handle it.
02:21And I would want that they could be able to help me and assist me with putting him on the
02:26program because he can't walk at all.
02:29Kurt has been fortunate to receive a wheelchair, a walker and a potty chair from some family
02:34and also received some assistance from a member of the church he used to attend to get a prosthetic leg.
02:40However, there are certain parts of the prosthetic leg that need to be changed every year which are costly
02:46and he also needs a medical bed.
02:48I would like to get a medical bed and some formal compensation.
02:57The prosthetic, taking like the inner socks, is $4,000.
03:05I care for this.
03:07And you have to change it every year?
03:09Every year is for you.
