00:00The day after election day, there are going to be a lot of disappointed people, especially
00:03disappointed candidates. And losing candidates often feel a great sense of frustration. Some of
00:08them want to run again right away. Some of them want to contest the results. It's a situation I
00:12faced personally because I ran for Congress in my old hometown in Illinois in 2010. And I started
00:18out with nothing, no money, no staff, and I put together a campaign. And eventually we had a
00:23really fantastic effort, even though I was a Republican running in a deep blue district.
00:28I hired a friend of mine named Paul Miller, who was our volunteer coordinator. And he
00:32told me, you've got to go door to door, knock on doors, talk to people, go to the train
00:37stations in the morning, greet the voters. And I couldn't quite understand why at first
00:40because it seemed very inefficient. I wanted to reach as many people as possible. I wanted
00:44to be on TV or online. He said, no, you've got to meet people one by one. You've got to
00:49get your name out there or it gets around. You can't meet everybody, but you can be a
00:53presence. So I did that. Election night came and I lost by a wide margin. I gave a concession
00:58speech. And the next day I wondered what to do. And Paul said, go back out there. So
01:02I went back to one of the train stations and I just greeted commuters on their way to work
01:07and I thanked them for the opportunity to run. And really running for office is a privilege.
01:12It's an amazing thing we can do as part of this democracy. And the great thing about this
01:16democracy is that the losing side doesn't lose everything. Not only can you run again another
01:21day, but you're still part of the process. Here in California, the California Post is changing
01:27California's politics, changing California's culture. And no, the state's not going to change
01:32overnight. But thanks to you, the readers and viewers, we are going to make California the place
01:38it has always dreamed of being. And we're going to turn the state around. And I really believe that.
01:43I'm optimistic about America and I'm optimistic about California.
