00:00I'm here at the Fox News studio in West L.A., about to go on the air to give my
00:05analysis of the election.
00:07It was obviously a blue wave, a much bigger one than we expected, with control of both houses of Congress
00:13going to Democrats.
00:14And once again, Americans have chosen divided government, as Americans have done, really, since the Second World War.
00:21And people are going to give you all kinds of explanations as to why this happened.
00:25They'll talk about gas prices. They'll talk about the Iran War.
00:27But remember, there was also strong opposition to many of Donald Trump's policies going back to the beginning of his
00:33administration, including immigration enforcement and some of the other policies he carried out, which were policies he campaigned on, policies
00:41he was elected to enact.
00:43And what you can say about it is that generally this is a reaction by an opposition that is confronted
00:50by a very ambitious and powerful president.
00:52And historically, the reaction of American voters to an ambitious president has been to mount a very aggressive opposition.
01:00President Barack Obama faced the Tea Party revolt in 2010, and that was because he pushed Obamacare through Congress.
01:06And at the time, he told a news interview that he was prepared to be a one-term president to
01:12achieve what he saw as a movement toward universal health care.
01:15Now, you can agree or disagree that Obamacare was a good policy, but the fact is that presidents who leave
01:21lasting legacies often do things that are politically costly, but that they believe are historically important.
01:28The things Trump was elected to do to secure the border, to grow the economy, to stop Iran from getting
01:33a nuclear weapon, those are things he is doing.
01:35And you're seeing the political result tonight.
01:38Keep in mind also that Republicans typically lose Congress in the sixth year of their presidencies.
01:43That's certainly happening to Trump tonight.
01:44It also happened to another great Republican president, Ronald Reagan.
01:47We'll see if Trump can work with his Democratic Congress, but that's my analysis here as the results come in.
