00:00Really cool pedal board because it has
00:03These sort of hydraulic lifts any below this too and it just starts getting really quiet any above this too
00:09And it's just loud as hell
00:36I'm Jake Zimmerman. I play guitar for Edge Hill and we're on tour in Chicago at the Subterranean right now
00:42promoting our record Ode to the Greyhouse
00:43This has been the guitar I've been playing most often on stage right now. It's a Shabbat
00:51Lion Special
00:52Which is a brand that I had never heard of and I picked it up at a guitar shop randomly
00:57and it was like the best guitar
00:59I'd ever played so I had to get it. I bought it at
01:04Guitars to be played in Nashville, which is a super underrated shop. They're filled with amazing
01:10Lesser-known brands of guitars like these
01:13Yeah, I would highly recommend checking them out if you're ever in Nashville
01:16Pickup wise it's got
01:19Lawlers in here. This is a Lawler P90
01:22There's one of them. It's like a little more mid scooped
01:25It sounds more like a traditional single coil, but has a higher output that I really like and then
01:31It had a similar pickup in here that I actually took out and put in this Lawler
01:37I think it's an antiquity humbucker or something like that the higher the higher wind version of that just to
01:43match the high output of this
01:45Um, nothing really fancy going on. It's really light. It weighs like six pounds, which I like on stage and
01:53Moat came with most of this wear although I've added a good amount down here and a chip on the
01:58fretboard just from it being on the road a short time
02:00I play Deodario NYXL's
02:03I think they're 10 to 52 so they're like a normal gauge up here and they're thicker down here. I
02:08play those because I
02:10I never really I find I never really need more give and I just prefer the tighter response of a
02:16thicker string
02:18Holds tuning better
02:20All sorts of benefits and the NYXL's I really like because they just last so much longer and I'm I
02:24only end up changing strings like every
02:27Five to ten shows instead of every two or three, which is really nice
02:32Oh, I pretty much always have the tone rolled all the way up. I will ride the volume
02:39Depending on what I'm doing usually just whereas a gain control their volume if I want to control my master
02:44volume. I do have a
02:46Like a pedal here. That's after my gain stages, but this will be like if I want to clean up
02:50my sound
02:52I use all the pickups and tuning. It's just
02:56Standard we have a couple songs in drop D that I'll drop it down to okay. This is
03:01The guitar that I've played most of my time in the band. It's on like the vast majority of the
03:06records
03:08it's
03:09It's just recently sort of been replaced as a as the main onstage guitars because it's a little less practical.
03:16It's a 1966 Fender Mustang
03:19In Daphne blue it was in absolutely perfect condition when I bought it from Carter vintage guitars and has like
03:26Since started to look like a vintage guitar
03:30Like all of these chips it didn't have didn't have any of that in it. It was clean
03:35At that point. It's really kind of a cool
03:38investment because it's got this bird's eye
03:40Finish in the neck which is I've never seen one like that before
03:47Yeah, it's the same thing same string setup as the other guitar 10 to 52 NYXL. I did have this
03:53Uh bridge pickup replaced recently just to get a little more bite out of the bridge position
04:00um
04:02any
04:04Uh songs like on the record did not have that in there. They were just recorded with this
04:09original single coil that was in there and I had the
04:14Wiring switch so the stock wiring would be like this is an independent control for each pickup
04:19That turns it on off and switches the phase which was cool, but not super convenient for like wanting to
04:26quickly switch pickup
04:27So I had it altered so that this is um the pickup selector like neck middle bridge and this is
04:35um in the middle just the full humbucker and then selects a coil split so this is this coil
04:42This is that one if I want to go back to that more traditional single coil Mustang sound
04:48And this is the label I put on it
04:51I am not playing this lap steel, but Leighton there's a couple songs in the set for me and Leighton
04:57switch and I take up the bass
04:59Um, he does some rippage on the lap steel that his grandfather found at an estate sale. Um, and he
05:05like altered it to
05:08Have these legs on it so it can just hang out here on stage and also these b-benders
05:14Not even b-benders just like sort of emulating what like a uh, what a pedal steel does
05:20Um, which is really fun. We have it. I have him just play through my rig and we have some
05:25crazy sounds and delay throws and stuff
05:27That he does on that so it's a fun little switch up for the set
05:30First of all, this is a pedal board made in brazil, but I think it's like I think it's hands
05:35custom. Yeah, there it is
05:36Um, really cool pedal board because it has
05:41These sort of like hydraulic lifts I can keep a lot of my extra supplies down here my power supply
05:47um
05:48My
05:49Hx stomp runs on a separate power supply than this so I have separate plugs for that and it all
05:54just runs out of one plug
05:56On the side here that I plug into every night, which is like
06:01Amazingly convenient and also cuts down on a lot of technical issues or getting anything unplugged or any ground loops
06:06And stuff like that
06:08And yeah starting at the top of the chain here just standard like polytune
06:13Which is just a tuner
06:14Um, then I use this freak out which is something leaton actually showed me
06:19Um, which is a good way we do a lot of like
06:22Feedback and noise in our set and sometimes that's it's not super appropriate to have the amps actually loud enough
06:28to naturally feedback
06:30So this comes in handy for situations where I want to get that feel
06:34I don't want to like rip people's ears off in the front row
06:37Um
06:39Then I have a jrocket
06:42Archer which is just like a con clone kind of just use it as a boost I
06:46Have the gain
06:48Rolled all the way down almost all the time and the output pretty cranked
06:52Treble I will adjust the taste and soundcheck based on like how the room is feeling and
06:56How much of that extra bicep bite I want on that given night
07:00Then we run into this brothers am which I think is like a king of tone
07:05Type pedal and has all sorts of features that I don't use I just use it as a standard
07:11Two pedal this side is like an overdrive
07:13It sounds very what I would call it amp like overdrive like it's not it doesn't sound like
07:18It's altering my tone too much
07:21Um, it just sounds like I turned up the amps without actually having to do them and then this just
07:25has like a
07:27Moderately clean but boost um you can change the order that these run into each other right now
07:32I have a setup so the clean boost run into the overdrive
07:34So it's sort of like an added gain stage to that
07:38Um
07:39I run into the ocd which is what I used
07:43For most of my overdrive like heavier overdrive
07:47Tones even then I never have the drive turned up very much. I'd rather push the amps and get it
07:52that way
07:52Um, yeah, great pedal classic
07:57At some point in this chain. I forget where we're running into the 1981
08:02Which is like a rat style pedal that I used to use a ton and is sort of being replaced
08:08more and more by the ocd now
08:10But there are still some some of our older songs where this is very essential
08:14Something practically this is that over driven sound
08:17for that
08:19Um, and then
08:21Probably the coolest pedal on my board is this console preamp also made by a brazilian company
08:26I'm pretty sure got a lot of brazilian gear for some reason
08:30Um, and it's like a neve
08:32Style preamp that you can run really hard and get like almost like fuzzed out broken transistor
08:40sort of
08:42Sounds um, so the overdrive I used pretty much for every overdrive sound on note to the great house
08:48Um, just cranked it cranked both the input game and the output game really hard
08:54And it just does a really nice job of both pushing the tube amps and really just like clipping
09:00Everything way before it gets there and I really like the blend of
09:03This sort of unnatural sound and then how it like pushes um and already pushed tube amp
09:10Um, out of there we are running
09:14into my hx stomp
09:16Um, which is super handy because I
09:20It cuts the size of my pedal board in half. It's already way too big
09:24Um, so this houses like all of my reverbs and some extra delays and like some
09:30Other weird sounds that I use in the set
09:32Most of the time I just have it
09:35Where these reverbs are available on and off and then for some songs I will click
09:40To a different setting and have like a ring modulator on here or
09:45extra delays and stuff
09:47And then the other cool thing is um
09:50Um, uh, it has an effects loop that I run this volume pedal in so like I was saying before
09:55This sort of acts as a master volume to my whole pedal board
10:00Um
10:03After that we're running to the nemesis delay which has been broken for years so it's been stuck on the
10:08same settings that it's been
10:11Like for the last three years or something which I pretty much almost exclusively use it for this reverse delay
10:17Setting um, and I also I like I keep it on the board instead of it
10:20Or like instead of fully replacing it with hx stomp because I like having the knobs and I do a
10:25lot of reverb throws or delay throws and
10:27crazy feedback stuff
10:30On that and that's all running after the volume pedal so
10:35I do a lot of like sort of swells into the
10:39Delay so that you don't get the attack of the note, but then the delay
10:44Has the trails afterwards and they don't get cut off when I take the volume back down
10:50And then lastly we have just a loop station where I have some different like
10:56Noise scapes that we run during our set that I've built up um
11:00Anything or it's like we sort of wish we had extra hands on stage to make noise during a section
11:06or
11:07To just be an extra element of chaos. I will step on that
11:10And
11:12Yeah, let it fill that space running like a two amp
11:16Rig right now in stereo
11:19Another nice thing about using the stomp is I can have I have sort of an always on
11:24Stereo slap back going on so this amp is like a like
11:29Something like 20 milliseconds delayed from this amp at all times just to give it a little more width
11:35um
11:36I don't run either amp with any reverb so that also acts as like a little more of that cushion
11:41Um, this is a tone king imperial mark 2
11:46This has actually been swapped out recently because I had a tone king royalist that was stolen
11:51From our trailer with our trailer
11:53So somebody tries to sell you one of those for really cheap in nashville
11:56Let me know but um, this is a great amp
11:59They're both both tone kings are doing the same job in this rig of like being the more mid-rangey
12:05Bitey amp, um
12:07Like very focused sound. I have them running
12:11Have it running um volume like
12:14Between two and three usually and that's right at the point where it's starting to compress
12:18Yeah, they have this attenuator built in back here. I think they call it the iron man attenuator
12:23Which allows me to control the output of the amp to the speakers
12:27Instead of like in a volume stage so I can run the preamp stage as hot as I want
12:32To get the sound I want and then back off the volume and not
12:37Kill the audience so much and have a isaac our sound guy a little happier with me
12:42um, it has a
12:44A good dual channel feature on that that I don't really use because I have
12:50Already a lot of control of the pedal board and then
12:53For the second amp to round it out. This is just a basic blues deluxe got used on facebook mario
12:59plays for like 400 bucks
13:00Uh, absolutely nothing special about it at all
13:04I like it because it has a ton of low end
13:06And really fattens up the sound um, which on its own if I was just running this I would
13:11Want to modify or roll all that off but in combination with the really sharp mid-range of this it
13:17really creates a full sound
13:19Um running this as low as the volume will let me go. This is a ridiculously loud amp
13:25Um any any below this too, and it just starts getting really quiet any above this too, and it's just
13:30loud as hell so
13:34Um, that's one of the downsides of using it, but it sounds really good. So I still do it anyway
13:39Um, yeah, eq all basic up the middle
13:42Um, yeah, just a basic sturdy amp that never breaks. I used to be a pick snob. I'm not anymore.
13:49I use tortex
13:51Dunlop 60 millimeter. I will use anything orange or yellow from this brand. Uh, it doesn't really matter to me
13:58I've been jake from edgehill. Uh, we're on tour. Uh, we're promoting our record ode to the gray house, and
14:03we hope to see you at a show
14:14You
