00:01Well, there certainly isn't great news for some of those essential workers, people who
00:05are unarguably the backbone of society, teachers, cleaners, firefighters.
00:10Some people in those professions are able to access less than 1% of the current rental
00:15market across Australia.
00:16Now, this report was released by Anglicare, the annual rental affordability snapshot.
00:21It shows key occupations, including retail workers, social workers and cleaners, can
00:26afford very little of the rental listings on the market.
00:28It's also bad news for aged care workers, early childhood educators, people in hospitality.
00:33Those people can only afford 0.7%.
00:35Nurses can only afford 1.1%.
00:38Slightly better news for school teachers, they can access 3.3% of the listings.
00:43Now, that report surveyed almost 50,000 rental listings across Australia, measuring each
00:48property against the full-time minimum wage for workers in 16 essential occupations.
00:53Of the industries included, only three saw an increase in affordability compared to last
00:57year.
00:58The other 13 either decreased or remained stagnant.
01:01Although, as I said, this certainly isn't a surprise to a lot of people who have been
01:05in the rental market.
01:06We took a straw poll on the streets of Brisbane this morning.
01:08Have a listen at what people had to say, Cap.
01:10I'd hate to be trying to get into the rental market at the moment.
01:13You know, you're looking at, even just for something average like a duplex, you're looking
01:16at 700 a week.
01:17With rent and stuff going up at our age, we're kind of like, how are we ever going to afford
01:20a house?
01:21There's no way I can save to buy a house and rent at the same time.
01:26Exactly.
01:26Like, if I'm renting, I'm not saving to buy a house.
01:28I would have to, like, move home with my parents.
01:29Yes.
01:29We do know the RBA raised the cash rate earlier this week for the fifth time this year.
01:34That obviously does have a trickle-down effect to rental properties, so things probably aren't
01:38going to be getting easier any time soon.
