00:00David, first of all, another milestone for yourself.
00:02You'll equal Harry Catterick's record of taking charge of the most Everton games.
00:06What does that mean to you?
00:08Well, I got told about it a few weeks ago and it was interesting.
00:12I didn't realise I'd got that close.
00:15Harry Catterick's name's always been mentioned alongside Howard's name, obviously.
00:20And I'm very proud to be up there getting talked in the same breath as them regarding games.
00:26I wish I had the trophies to go what they had.
00:30Do you know how many games, by the way?
00:31Oh, is it 760?
00:35It's 592.
00:36Oh, sorry, yeah.
00:37Yeah, yeah.
00:38But, I mean, you talk about winning trophies.
00:40I just wonder then how good is this current group that you have,
00:43given the time that you've spent at the football?
00:46Well, I think the current group we've got are doing excellent.
00:50I think especially the way things have gone in the summer and the window.
00:55I think they need great praise for how they're doing and they're going along about it.
00:59We've lost a couple of games, but we've won a few important games as well.
01:03So, not pleased with them and I hope we can keep it going.
01:06How do you assess where you're at then as well?
01:08Because a week ago, you're facing a tough cup tie.
01:10You're facing then on the Monday night, a big challenge away from home in the Premier League.
01:14You're three to a quarterfinal and you're seventh in the Premier League, only three points off the top four.
01:18Yeah, but look, if I'd lost, we might have been 15th or so.
01:22I think the league's so tight, you're going to be up and down and these are going to be questions
01:26we're going to be asked to lots of managers
01:27because it's going to change very quickly.
01:30Win a couple of games, you could be up near the top end.
01:33Lose a couple, you could be near the bottom end.
01:36But when you get good results, you've got to take it as a manager and it was a great result
01:41in the cup
01:41and it was a really good result in the league.
01:42For us to beat Newcastle twice in a row was really important for us, but also very difficult to do.
01:51Equally important, I'd imagine, then to go into the international break, not just with a win, but in the top
01:55half of the table.
01:57Yeah, I hoped that we would be somehow and obviously we've got Coventry to play, which will be a really
02:04difficult game for us.
02:06Coventry have had some really good results as well, so yeah, it'll be an interesting game.
02:11Just aside from the game, I know we've mentioned Cairn in quite a bit, but your hopes perhaps of an
02:16England call-up for him this week
02:17because it's obviously announced tomorrow morning.
02:19Yeah, I mean, look, as I say many times, every time I get asked, I thank goodness I don't have
02:24to pick the England team
02:26because I think England have got so many good players to choose from.
02:30Cairn's form is getting back to his levels of last year.
02:34Recently, the last couple of games, he's been very good.
02:37So, you know, I hope he does.
02:39He certainly must be round knocking on the door.
02:42But again, I keep saying the position he plays in, you know, there's so many good players could sort of
02:48claim those roles.
02:50So, as long as he keeps doing well for Everton, we'll be pleased.
02:54But if he gets recognised for England, that'll be great.
02:57He talks a lot about doing something special for this club.
03:00Does that set him apart?
03:01Because we often hear players talking about wanting to play Champions League football, wanting to win trophies.
03:06But he says it's all about something for the club rather than personal recognition.
03:11Well, he's probably come from a couple of clubs which recently have won trophies and, you know, been around success.
03:17So, he'll have an idea of what it feels like.
03:19And he also knows that we've not won anything for a long, long time.
03:23And also, that, you know, we're fighting really hard like we did do last year to try and get back
03:29into Europe for the supporters who for, you know, a decade or more have not had European football.
03:36So, it's good to hear.
03:38That's the way we want the players to be.
03:39We want them committed and knowing exactly that we're trying to move forward.
03:44He also said that he looked at the opposition manager in Frank Lampard and modelled some of his game on
03:50him.
03:50And obviously, you know, Frank Lampard pretty well yourself.
03:53And he's played quite a big part in this club's recent history as well with that comeback win over Palace.
03:57He has and he was a great player, played against them many times and he was always a problem because
04:02he scored so many good goals.
04:04But I have to say he's done a great job getting Coventry out of the Championship and up.
04:11He's shown that he's a really good manager.
04:13I think his time here was probably going through a really difficult period where the club was at that time.
04:20And, you know, keeping Everton up was a huge challenge.
04:23I know what it's like. I've had it when I was at West Ham and how difficult it is and
04:28the pressure you're under to do it.
04:30And he would have been under, you know, huge pressure at that time at Everton.
04:34So, keeping him up was a big, big job and well done.
04:37I'll just check a couple of final things with you.
04:39Did you get a chance to have a look at that Tieno Barry penalty shout again?
04:43I did, yeah.
04:43What are your thoughts now?
04:44I thought on another day, another day it could have been given from a tackle from behind.
04:49I thought it could have been.
04:52It probably goes into our portfolio of ones which we haven't got, which we've got quite a few of them,
04:57actually.
05:00So, let's hope.
05:01Thankfully, on the night, it didn't count and it went in our favour.
05:04So, it looks a bit more than clear and obvious.
05:08Well, I thought there was a little bit more to it than at the time.
05:13I wasn't sure, I got a feeling that, you know, was it or wasn't it, but I don't think you
05:17can kick through the back of people and it necessarily be, that'd be okay.
05:20So, I think there might be some referees who have given it and I think there have been some who,
05:25as it proved the other night, who don't.
05:27And availability-wise, Jared okay after cramp?
05:31Yeah, or just nursing him along a wee bit, just checking to see if he's okay, so we need to
05:34see how he is, yeah.
05:35And Jack Grealish, is he available?
05:38No, Jack's not available.
05:39And can you give any ideas to what the plan is to reintegrate him?
05:43How's he actually training at the moment?
05:44Well, I wouldn't give you the plan, but we will be working with Jack again soon.
05:56Hi, David.
05:57Hi, Julie.
05:58Teono Barry was mentioned there, he's on eight goals, which is what his tally was last season in total.
06:04We've often spoken about chances he has missed, but he's taken them.
06:08What's changed about Teono Barry's play, do you think?
06:12Well, I think first thing is settling down.
06:15I say it and it doesn't, it sounds a bit excuse-like, but I think bringing in young boys from
06:19overseas to come and play in the Premier League,
06:21and sort of hit it off.
06:22You know, I think there's so many clubs, and especially the centre forwards, if you think of the centre forwards
06:26that have been bought by some of the clubs
06:28and maybe not quite lived up to the levels of what was expected, we took a bit of an early
06:34gamble in buying Teono
06:37and knowing that it probably wouldn't be right right away, and it's been the case.
06:42It's not all right just now, but Haaland should be worried that he's just behind him now, I think, so
06:48he has to be careful.
06:49Teono's on his back.
06:53So let's hope he can keep scoring for us, and look, he keeps trying to improve, and I hope he
06:58can do that.
07:00Three goals against Newcastle in the Cup game, it's the most you've scored in a Premier League game this season.
07:06That starting XI you've made changes, you changed it again for the league game at Newcastle.
07:11What goes into making changes?
07:12Because I think sometimes people think if you win, you might stick with that starting XI.
07:17I had in my head that we would probably change when we went up to Newcastle just for different reasons.
07:21I just thought we might need different things there.
07:26And yeah, I want us to get that we've only got a small group of players, as you know.
07:30We'll get, well, 18, 17 outfield players at the moment.
07:35And I want them to feel that if they play, then we need them, we'll use them.
07:40But they've also got to show they can't come in and not be productive.
07:45And yeah, if you've got the jersey, you know, it's quite hard to always give it away and give it
07:49over to somebody else.
07:50But the two Newcastle games showed me that we've got, you know, 14, 15 of them who can come into
07:55the team and be used.
07:57And I hope that, you know, we need to be unpredictable sometimes.
08:03But also, I want it to be a challenge for the players and the team that they don't think that,
08:07you know,
08:07suddenly they've got the jersey and they're not getting much competition.
08:11It might be late on numbers, but do you feel there's a lot to be positive about with your squad
08:16right now?
08:17I think there's a lot to be positive because of how they've been doing generally.
08:25I feel as if we could have probably been doing better if we hadn't lost some players in the summer.
08:31I think it would have kept us right in amongst it.
08:34We've dipped in, as I said, the other night, you know, we win at Newcastle.
08:37We don't. We could have been sitting here maybe 15th or 16th in the league.
08:40I don't know where it would have been.
08:41But it would have still only been probably three or four points off the top teams.
08:46So it's very hard to judge the league standings at the moment.
08:49So I think all you can try and do is get as many wins as you possibly can and perform
08:55as well as we've done.
08:57And I think in the main, the players, even in the games we've lost, I think, have had good moments
09:02in the games.
09:03And, you know, we've been a little bit unlucky.
09:05Maybe we just don't quite have the quality to be at the levels of some teams.
09:10But hopefully we'll give them all a good game.
09:13You mentioned some of that that you wanted a few more in and lost some.
09:16Is there a plan already for January?
09:19I'm sure you won't tell us, but have you got plans and have you got assurances,
09:22even though we know there is a for sale sign up that you've got a budget?
09:25At the moment, there's no plans, no.
09:27I just wanted to mention Vitaly Mikalenko.
09:30He's been getting quite a lot of praise this season.
09:32He seems a quiet player who goes about his business, often not in headlines.
09:37How have you assessed his season so far?
09:39I think Mikko's played very well.
09:41I think he...
09:44I don't think there's any times he's made mistakes here and there,
09:47but I think generally he's become a really, really steady left back.
09:51He's done a great job for us.
09:53He makes himself available most of the time.
09:56So we think he's doing really well.
09:58We like him a lot.
10:00Thanks, Julia.
10:02We'll go to Adam Monk at Premier League Studios.
10:06Hi, David.
10:07Hi, Adam.
10:08Just on Tieno Barry, 10 goals and assists in 12 games this season
10:11as your only senior striker.
10:13He is doing very, very well.
10:14Just in terms of your management and how you work with him personally,
10:17I was wondering how much one-on-one work you do with him
10:20considering his importance in the squad being the only senior striker.
10:25Well, I think there's a lot of people take care of Tieno.
10:29Leighton Baines does a lot of work with him,
10:32a lot of finishing work,
10:33a lot of things which we're trying to improve on him.
10:37We've all had moments with him,
10:39whether it be in the video room or whether it be on the coaching field.
10:43I think generally he's beginning to mature a lot more as well
10:46because of his...
10:47As I said, I probably didn't finish it off.
10:50I was just saying that coming overseas and coming into the Premier League
10:52I don't think is easy, especially for a young striker.
10:55So I think he's done much better.
10:57He's adapting better to probably the culture and what's required.
11:04I think all managers would say the same.
11:06You always want more
11:06and I think he's got more room to develop,
11:10continue to improve
11:12and I hope he keeps doing that.
11:13If he's learning off Leighton Baines,
11:15could he become the set-piece taker then?
11:16No, I don't think so.
11:18He'll never make as many assists as Leighton Baines had in his career,
11:21that's for sure.
11:24But I think he would love to be playing Leighton Baines
11:26who would deliver the crosses into him.
11:28I think he would maybe get more goals.
11:30Absolutely.
11:30And if you do win on Friday night,
11:33you'll be going to joint fourth in the table,
11:35maybe temporarily.
11:36Given the size of the squad,
11:38would you say going into the November international break
11:40that would surprise you a little bit
11:42if you are that high in the table
11:44given the amount of plays you've had at your disposal?
11:48I'm going to say no
11:49because I want to be up there
11:50and I want to be challenging
11:52and it was disappointing when we lost some of our best players
11:55because it would have definitely helped us
11:57and given us a real chance of continuing to do it.
12:00And let's be fair,
12:00last season we were probably quite similar last season.
12:03We were in and around the top end of the league
12:05for long parts of it.
12:08So I hope we can keep that going.
12:09But as I said,
12:10because the league is so tight,
12:12if you lose a game,
12:14you can be dropping down.
12:14If you win a game,
12:15you can be pushed up.
12:17So just trying to get a few wins
12:18and solidify yourself in the league
12:20and be in a good place
12:22and I hope that's what we can do.
12:23We can do that.
12:25Thanks, Arthur.
12:25Any further questions in the open section
12:27before we move on?
12:30No?
12:35Hi, David.
12:36Just with Jack,
12:37do you expect that the international break
12:38to give you an opportunity
12:39to resolve this situation?
12:42We'll see.
12:43We'll just need to wait and see how things go.
12:47Thanks very much.
12:48Cheers.
