00:00:19All right, we got the next generation Silverado for a next generation NFL show.
00:00:25The Gruden family football show. I love it.
00:00:27Listen, Jay, I've hosted a lot of shows in my day. I know what I'm doing. Just follow my lead.
00:00:32Hey, I know football, too, man. That's why you begged me to be on the show.
00:00:35Right? I didn't beg.
00:00:37Yes, you did.
00:00:38I didn't.
00:00:38Did to.
00:00:39I never said that.
00:00:40Guys, guys, you're the Gruden brothers.
00:00:42Of course you both know football. Can we please start the show?
00:00:45Let's do it.
00:00:46Hey, Google. Let's go to work.
00:00:50Sure. Navigating to work.
00:01:08Welcome to the Gruden family football show presented by the Chevy Silverado.
00:01:12Week nine of the NFL is here.
00:01:15Jay Gruden, John Gruden.
00:01:16I'm Casey Smith.
00:01:17And listen, we are almost at halftime of the NFL season, which feels crazy.
00:01:21We've just blazed through the first half.
00:01:23We're the two-minute warning guys.
00:01:24So, what has really stood out to you as we look forward to week nine from the first half of
00:01:28the season?
00:01:29Well, some of the teams we thought were going to be great aren't.
00:01:32And some of the teams we thought were going to be kind of bad aren't.
00:01:35So, there's a lot of crazy stuff going on.
00:01:38There's only two games this week where the teams have a winning record.
00:01:42So, there's a lot of parity.
00:01:44I still think there's a lot to be decided.
00:01:46What stood out to you?
00:01:48I think expect the unexpected.
00:01:49Now, you never know who's going to win on a given Sunday.
00:01:51Teams that are winning 13-point underdogs.
00:01:54Last week, the Tennessee Titans almost beat the Bengals.
00:01:57I mean, the Cardinals go to Dallas.
00:01:59Down 14 and come back and win.
00:02:01You can't predict the NFL.
00:02:02I never have and never will be able to.
00:02:04At one point, I was watching the quad box with all the different games.
00:02:07And I looked at the Patriots-Dolphins score.
00:02:09And I was like, wait, hold on a minute.
00:02:11This Patriots team is actually losing to this Dolphins team.
00:02:13Now, they end up winning.
00:02:14But you are right.
00:02:15Every week, it seems like some scorer is surprising us.
00:02:18Every week.
00:02:18It happens every year, every week.
00:02:20Every week, any given Sunday.
00:02:21So, a lot of these teams, though, John, we've talked about that we thought might be good,
00:02:24especially like the Chargers.
00:02:26They are looking awful.
00:02:27A lot of people are looking forward to potentially the draft already.
00:02:29You think now, in early November, they're looking at who these guys could be able to
00:02:33go off the draft board?
00:02:34It's awful early to be looking at the draft with nine games, eight games to go.
00:02:37But look at the board, what we thought going into the season.
00:02:41I mean, we have a graph somewhere where we have draft kings that picks who's going to win
00:02:46the Super Bowl and what the odds are.
00:02:49And I don't know.
00:02:50I'm waiting to see that graphic on here.
00:02:52You see, it's kind of like a delay.
00:02:54There it comes.
00:02:55There it comes.
00:02:56I mean, the Ravens, look at them.
00:02:58To begin the season, I don't know what all those numbers mean.
00:03:01Do you?
00:03:01Plus a thousand.
00:03:01You put a hundred bucks up, you win a thousand.
00:03:03Well, hell, they're expected to have a great year.
00:03:05So are the Eagles.
00:03:06The Chargers won 11 games.
00:03:08I picked the Texans and the Cowboys to perhaps be in the Super Bowl.
00:03:12Now you can't even give away the tickets to these games.
00:03:17It's unbelievable what we expected and what we have at this point in the season.
00:03:21I know that teams and coaches and players should never be paying attention to what we're
00:03:25looking at right now.
00:03:26But fans do.
00:03:27This is something that fans look at when they start looking at their team and you're going
00:03:30into week nine, 10, 11.
00:03:31You're getting close to the holidays and you're like, shit, my team's not very good, but I could
00:03:35get that number one draft pick.
00:03:36So those are things that fans are looking at, but you're saying coaches, coaches are
00:03:40not.
00:03:40No, coaches shouldn't be doing that.
00:03:41If they are doing that, they're not very good coaches and they won't be coaching very
00:03:44long in this league.
00:03:45But when you do look at the potential draft order for next year, you got to say, wow,
00:03:51what would the Chargers do if they had the number one pick?
00:03:54Perhaps they would trade Justin Herbert.
00:03:57Think again, who are they going to draft?
00:03:59Who's the number one quarterback?
00:04:00I mean, I say it every year.
00:04:01These kids that come into the draft.
00:04:03Oh, we got a top five pick.
00:04:05Who are the top five picks in last year's draft?
00:04:07If you name anybody on the street, they can't even tell you.
00:04:11You know, the draft right now is a crapshoot.
00:04:13A lot of these kids are going to four different colleges.
00:04:15I don't think there is a true number one pick right now.
00:04:19Maybe Jeremiah Smith at Ohio State, but that doesn't help the Chargers if they get rid of
00:04:25Justin Herbert.
00:04:26But look at the Jets, three of the top 10 picks.
00:04:29But the Jets have had top 10 picks a lot.
00:04:31Sauce Gardner's gone.
00:04:32Quentin Williams is gone.
00:04:33Jermaine Johnson is gone.
00:04:35Who gives a shit?
00:04:35I mean, they should take two of those, send them to the Chargers, and take Justin Herbert.
00:04:39Yeah.
00:04:40How about that?
00:04:40And do you think that he would have more protection if he was with the Jets?
00:04:43Because he's got none with the Chargers.
00:04:44Yeah, they got two good young tackles in the Jets.
00:04:46Yeah.
00:04:46You better not trade Herbert.
00:04:48You better get your offense straight.
00:04:49But that's another story.
00:04:51Teams that we thought aren't what they are.
00:04:54And the draft picks, you know, there's a lot of jockeying going on, but the Jets look like
00:04:58they're going to have three of the top 10 picks.
00:05:00And when you look at that and you look back at preseason and what we looked at, the Super
00:05:03Bowl odds and what teams look like they could be doing going into this season to where we
00:05:07are now, a lot of different teams have fallen.
00:05:09I know you and I were very high on the Rams.
00:05:11They were the preseason Super Bowl favorites.
00:05:14Still am.
00:05:15You're still really high on the Rams?
00:05:16Yeah.
00:05:17How high?
00:05:18Pretty high.
00:05:18Pretty high?
00:05:19I like the Rams.
00:05:20Miles Garrett's going to be coming out of the tunnel pretty soon.
00:05:22Yeah, he will be.
00:05:22That'll change things, too.
00:05:24But when you look back, I mean, and it's not just this show.
00:05:26I mean, we are the best show.
00:05:27But when you look at shows across the country, there are some teams that have really been
00:05:29surprising.
00:05:30Are the Chargers, you think, the most disappointing, surprising team this year?
00:05:34I mean, they won a game.
00:05:35Not to interrupt you, Case, but I think you're going to see the Chargers and the Texans,
00:05:39two of the most disappointing teams, square off.
00:05:43You know, they are disappointing teams.
00:05:45They have most of their roster back.
00:05:47I realize the Chargers have a lot of guys hurt on their offensive line, but they're disappointing.
00:05:53I have to ask this, and I know that people roll their eyes, but when fans are like,
00:05:57our team is tanking, teams aren't actually tanking, right?
00:06:00No, these guys are playing for a job.
00:06:02When you get a chance to get on the grass, you know all the other personnel directors
00:06:06are watching that tape.
00:06:07And they're not only watching the players, they're watching what the coaches are putting
00:06:11on tape.
00:06:12So if you're lackluster, you're not preparing or playing hard, you will not be in the NFL,
00:06:18I promise you, for very long.
00:06:20Can you imagine being a defensive lineman and not trying and just getting bludgeoned to
00:06:23the ground?
00:06:24Think you'll have a job next year?
00:06:26Hell no.
00:06:26It's always the middle ground of like, you know players want to play because they want
00:06:30to make their money and millions of dollars, wherever that may be.
00:06:32But then you're like, is the front office saying, oh, maybe we should tank for that?
00:06:35There are some decisions that are questionable by the front office that would give you that
00:06:38impression.
00:06:38Yes.
00:06:39However, the players on the field, they're going to play their ass.
00:06:42Never tanking.
00:06:43Speaking of players on the field, John, we've talked a lot each week, whether it's on the
00:06:46show or on the production calling, who are these guys?
00:06:48Some of these guys that are standing out to you that are not on the radar going into
00:06:52the season.
00:06:52That's what I'm talking about.
00:06:53Mike Washington of the Raiders is one of them.
00:06:55Who is this guy?
00:06:56One year at Arkansas, he comes in last week, 25 carries.
00:07:00He busted it up in there.
00:07:01Nice.
00:07:02And how about Jonah Coleman?
00:07:03What he did for Sean Payton?
00:07:05I mean, helped win the game at the end.
00:07:06Tyler Algier comes off the pine.
00:07:09Kaboom!
00:07:09He has about 150 yards on five carries.
00:07:12Kenneth Gainwell had a career day for Tampa.
00:07:15How about Tootin for Jacksonville?
00:07:17I mean, they lose H-And of the Saints.
00:07:19You think, who's the feature back?
00:07:21Guess what?
00:07:21Tootin's a hell of a player.
00:07:23And how about Emmitt Johnson for the Kansas City Chiefs?
00:07:27Catching the ball, returning kicks, running the rock.
00:07:31To my point, there's a lot of guys that are very talented that are going to take advantage
00:07:36of an opportunity to play.
00:07:37That will always be playing and not trying to tank, right?
00:07:40No matter what.
00:07:40No matter what.
00:07:41Because some of these players are going to merge and get huge contracts because they're
00:07:45playing on a team and get an opportunity that they probably wouldn't have gotten if
00:07:48they weren't supposedly tanking.
00:07:50So, these young players got great opportunities for a lot of these teams that have poor records.
00:07:54All right.
00:07:54Well, let's get into the Week 9 games just to update the standings.
00:07:58So, John, you had a great week.
00:07:59You went 11-3.
00:08:00Jay, you're right behind him, 10-4.
00:08:01But he's slowly sneaking up on you.
00:08:03Yeah.
00:08:04I didn't think that was a false start on the Chiefs.
00:08:05That was a big one for me.
00:08:06I thought that was a touchdown.
00:08:08That was not a false start.
00:08:09If it was a false start, he would have thrown the flag earlier.
00:08:11You know what?
00:08:12He waited until the ball was caught, and then he threw the flag.
00:08:14I know I've said this before, but I love what he does.
00:08:17The Dave Portnoy math.
00:08:18He does the thing where it's like, I actually had the right pick.
00:08:20The game just didn't go the right way.
00:08:22So, you technically should have won those games because you were right.
00:08:25Yeah, 100%.
00:08:26Yeah.
00:08:26Dave would be very proud of you.
00:08:28All right, let's get into the primetime picks presented by DraftKings.

00:08:58The crown is yours.
00:09:00All right, let's start with the Rams at the Commanders.
00:09:02Now, John, Rams finally win back-to-back games.
00:09:05They found a run game with Blake Corum.
00:09:07We've talked all about the Rams this season.
00:09:09They've looked up.
00:09:09They've looked down.
00:09:10It looks like they've got some things figured out on offense.
00:09:12You know, they went five drives in a row to start the game without making a first down.
00:09:17I mean, it was a hard watch.
00:09:18I think the Chargers kind of just get exasperated with this offense.
00:09:23They're like, God, you know, we give up.
00:09:26I'm not high on the Rams right now after that game.
00:09:30It looks like Stafford's having a hard time getting anything down the field.
00:09:34The running game is solid.
00:09:36The bootlegs are cool.
00:09:38But other than Puka Nakua, who do they throw the ball to?
00:09:41And I really like Jaden Daniels in this new offense.
00:09:45He's winning in the pocket.
00:09:46You said it a couple weeks ago, that second half against the 49ers, he was really good.
00:09:51And I think he's winning in the pocket, running when he has to.
00:09:55And I like the Commanders' defense.
00:09:57They're playing their ass off, man.
00:09:59They're missing a couple guys up front.
00:10:00But they got after Philly.
00:10:03They got to eliminate the false starts, some of the wasted plays on offense.
00:10:06But I do like the progress of the Commanders.
00:10:09And I'm going to take Washington at home to beat the Rams.
00:10:13And we know what's going on with Philly.
00:10:14We don't have to go down and beat a dead horse right now.
00:10:17But they did shut them out for three quarters and recorded five sacks, this Washington defense,
00:10:21which is really good when you look at the fact that Jaden Daniels is back.
00:10:24It looks like they're putting together complete football games.
00:10:26Yeah, Sonny Stiles is awesome.
00:10:27Probably going to be Defensive Player of the Year for the rookies.
00:10:30The Rams have a boring offense.
00:10:32That's just who they are.
00:10:32They line up with 13 personnel.
00:10:34They'll motion the guy in there, block, run duo, run an outside zone, do a play pass,
00:10:38do a couple quick screens on the outside.
00:10:40Next thing you know, they're up 23 to 13, and they're running the clock out.
00:10:43That's the way they play.
00:10:44That's how they are.
00:10:45So the Commanders, with their limited defense alignment, have to really buckle up.
00:10:49You know, losing pain in Kinlaw is two big losses for them for the rotation.
00:10:52What has Kinlaw ever done?
00:10:54He's part of the rotation, John.
00:10:55He's part of the rotation.
00:10:56He's a big, huge man.
00:10:57I haven't seen Kinlaw.
00:10:58He's 6'5", 320 pounds.
00:10:59I've read that for nine years.
00:11:01He's playing the double teams of the Rams, all right?
00:11:03So they have to stop that.
00:11:04He is huge.
00:11:05And then they'll do a cool screen to Puka, and he'll break it and score a touchdown.
00:11:08That's who the Rams are.
00:11:09But can they keep Jaden Daniels in the pocket?
00:11:12That's going to be the most important thing.
00:11:13The Rams don't have a great, great pass rush.
00:11:15Aaron Darnold, hopefully, if Miles Garrett gets back, if they do get those two guys back.
00:11:18I expect the Rams to coast in this game because of the lack of depth the commanders have on
00:11:23defense, especially up front.
00:11:24Okay.
00:11:25So the first game, you guys are disagreeing.
00:11:26We love that.
00:11:27Did you want to give something to Puka?
00:11:28Puka Nakua is going to be a free agent.
00:11:31Just give that money to Puka.
00:11:33He has 11 catches.
00:11:34He's the only guy that catches a freaking pass.
00:11:37He's the only receiver on the field.
00:11:38Well, God.
00:11:40Okay.
00:11:41Pay the man.
00:11:41Pay the man.
00:11:42You're going to start taking the money?
00:11:44I owe somebody some money.
00:11:45I'm going to keep that.
00:11:47I love, when you said I was going to get to make it rain, I was like, this is like
00:11:50the
00:11:50best day of my life.
00:11:51I'll just make it rain right here.
00:11:52You look like a natural doing that, by the way.
00:11:54That was rude.
00:11:55That was unnecessary.
00:11:56Let's go to the Packers at the Patriots.
00:11:58So the Packers last week beat the Panthers.
00:12:01The Patriots beat the Dolphins.
00:12:02Like I mentioned off the top of the show, Patriots struggling early with the Dolphins,
00:12:05Jay.
00:12:05They were down 13-3 at a half.
00:12:06Drake May, 199 yards, two touchdowns.
00:12:09The biggest thing with this game, when you look at the Packers, it's the turnover differential.
00:12:13Green Bay is plus four.
00:12:14New England is minus seven.
00:12:15And that's a concerning thing for the Patriots going into this game.
00:12:19100%.
00:12:20Turnovers in a game with two evenly matched teams is going to be the difference most likely.
00:12:24And the Packers are very good at forcing them.
00:12:26And Drake May threw a lot early, but he's settled down and done some great things the
00:12:30last four or five weeks.
00:12:30He's one of the top quarterbacks in the league right now.
00:12:32We all thought he stunk five weeks ago.
00:12:35He's pretty damn good.
00:12:36Yes, he is.
00:12:36Kyle Williams is a big deep ball threat.
00:12:38So yeah, the Patriots are back in midseason form.
00:12:41They're doing good.
00:12:42The Packers, both the Packers and the Patriots are very similar.
00:12:44They take a lot of shots.
00:12:46Both of them average about nine yards per air attempt.
00:12:48You know, they like to launch it.
00:12:49I like quarterbacks that throw the ball down the field.
00:12:51I'm tired of these bubble screens.
00:12:53I'm tired of these little flat leads, flat, flat block bull crap.
00:12:56These guys are going to launch it.
00:12:57And if the Packers can stop the big play and the Patriots can stop the big play, that'll
00:13:01be a big part of the game because we know the Packers cannot and will not run the ball.
00:13:06They're awful.
00:13:06Maybe the worst running offense I've seen in a long, long time.
00:13:09I haven't seen a hole in a Green Bay Packer offense yet.
00:13:12Have you seen a hole?
00:13:13Have you seen it where Josh Jacobs can get it and make it cut and go five yards?
00:13:16No.
00:13:17Last week, 39 yards on 21 carries.
00:13:19That's not very good.
00:13:20They're going to rely on Jordan Love, which is a good guy to rely on because he's an awesome
00:13:23player and they've got good receivers.
00:13:24Christian Watson coming back from broken rib.
00:13:26I mean, what a stud he is.
00:13:27Yeah, Jordan Love threw eight games, you know, 2,200 yards, 16 passing touchdowns, only six
00:13:32interceptions.
00:13:32He's having a hell of a year.
00:13:33But like Jay said, they can't get the running game going at all.
00:13:36No, I mean, Tampa Bay ran for 260 yards against Carolina.
00:13:41And three days later, Green Bay can't make one yard against Carolina.
00:13:44So, I mean, he can't explain it.
00:13:46I will say this.
00:13:47My old boss, Al Davis, he used to come up to me and say, are you ever going to throw
00:13:51the
00:13:51ball over the 15-yard wall?
00:13:54He kind of felt, I threw the ball, every pass was in 10 or 12.
00:13:57He would love, love.
00:13:59And he would love Drake May.
00:14:01They throw bombs.
00:14:02They're aggressive.
00:14:03I love Josh McDaniels and LeFleur.
00:14:05I think they do a heck of a job.
00:14:07Edger and Cooper getting hurt for Green Bay, I thought would kill them.
00:14:10But they got this Tyron Hopper guy.
00:14:12He makes plays on the ball.
00:14:14He's flying around.
00:14:16Jonathan Gannon has done a hell of a job.
00:14:1820 points or less in the last five games.
00:14:20The Packer defense is playing well.
00:14:22They're going to be just like the Rams pretty soon when they get Micah Parsons back.
00:14:26But he's not back this week.
00:14:27I'm taking the Patriots on the road.
00:14:311996, Green Bay beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl, but it ain't happening this time.
00:14:36I'm going to take New England.
00:14:37I think they're rolling.
00:14:39I think they're really hard to beat in New England.
00:14:41For some reason, every time I've been up there, I don't know.
00:14:44I'm like, I want to leave.
00:14:46You're not a fan of Foxborough, huh?
00:14:48I just never had any luck there.
00:14:49I don't see the Packers having much luck as a one-dimensional team, and they got a kicker
00:14:54who can't make a field goal.
00:14:56Trey Smack has been a very disappointing kicker.
00:14:59He's missed eight.
00:15:00He's on a struggle bus.
00:15:01He is.
00:15:01So, are you going to take the Packers?
00:15:02I'm taking the Patriots at home, man.
00:15:04I think it's going to be a tough day.
00:15:07One-dimensional teams versus Mike Vrabel don't fare very well.
00:15:09You have to be able to run the ball against the Patriots, and they can't, and it's going
00:15:13to be tough for Jordan Love.
00:15:14He'll have a good blitz package for them.
00:15:16They played a lot of different coverages back there, and I think the Patriots will get the win.
00:15:19Yeah, and the first half last week against the Dolphins when there was the collective
00:15:22social media meltdown, as there always is, it's when they play in Miami.
00:15:25Weird things happen.
00:15:26That was not what this team is.
00:15:27I think the Patriots are a very good team, and I don't know.
00:15:30There's something about Foxborough.
00:15:31You don't like it.
00:15:32I like it.
00:15:32I think Foxborough is pretty cool.
00:15:34I haven't had any luck there.
00:15:35I have bad memories there.
00:15:36I'm glad I'm not on the bus to Foxborough.
00:15:39Let's go to Monday Night Football.
00:15:40The Bills at the Vikings.
00:15:42Now, the Vikings get handed their first loss of the season versus Detroit last week.
00:15:45We talked so much about this Vikings defense and how good they were, and they were really
00:15:48carrying this team, John.
00:15:50When you look at the offense and you look at what Kyler Murray has been doing or not doing,
00:15:54it kind of seems like it finally caught up last week against Detroit, and then you know
00:15:58what the Bills have going for them.
00:16:00So how difficult is this game going to be for Minnesota?
00:16:02I don't know what Minnesota is on offense.
00:16:04I mean, they have 50 plays.
00:16:05They throw it almost every play.
00:16:07They never hand the ball off, and when they do, they're not very good run blocking.
00:16:10Kyler just can't see down the field.
00:16:12No disrespect, but there are guys open, and the rush gets in on them.
00:16:16I don't know if he can see it.
00:16:18He comes out of there.
00:16:18He aborts a lot of plays.
00:16:20I don't know if he's even going to play in this game anyways because of his hamstring.
00:16:24I tell you, though, Buffalo, you got Josh Allen, and you got James Cook, and they come
00:16:29out of the trash unlike any players I've ever seen.
00:16:32I mean, Allen scrambles against the Raven.
00:16:34There's the linebacker.
00:16:35He makes the guy disappear, and James Cook does it every week.
00:16:39They have two great players, D.J. Moore.
00:16:42Did you see that catch last week against Marlon Humphrey?
00:16:44He gives them a real certified threat down the field.
00:16:48I just think Buffalo is going to outscore Minnesota, kind of like Detroit did.
00:16:53Minnesota can't score.
00:16:54I've been saying it to you for the last six weeks, and Carson Wentz coming in there.
00:16:58Perhaps that'll give them a boost.
00:17:00I know the Viking fans will be going crazy.
00:17:03I want to root for Minnesota, but I'm going with the Buffalo Bills.
00:17:07I think their defense stepped up.
00:17:10I know it was the Ravens.
00:17:11They knocked two of the quarterbacks out of the game, but they really got after Baltimore's
00:17:15ass last week.
00:17:16That'll give them some confidence.
00:17:18I like the Bills to go on the road and get this.
00:17:21Yeah, and when you look at this matchup, it is the league's number one offense versus
00:17:24the league's number one defense, so that any time that happens, you're going to see a
00:17:27great game.
00:17:28But I know you're a huge Josh Allen fan, Superman, all of those things.
00:17:31Are you going with your brother?
00:17:33I'm a huge Viking defense fan, too.
00:17:34I think Carson Wentz will actually help him.
00:17:37I graded the quarterback, Kyler Murray, for the Vikings last week.
00:17:41In the first 21 plays, he had seven minuses.
00:17:43That's a lot for a quarterback, whether it's an overthrow, he tripped the guy in a handoff,
00:17:47he forgot to set an emotion on a running game.
00:17:48That's probably why the running game doesn't work.
00:17:50So there's a lot of issues with them.
00:17:51I think Carson Wentz will settle down and make some plays and make this game very, very
00:17:55interesting.
00:17:56They will get after Josh Allen, but Josh Allen, even if they have a free runner, what's he
00:18:00going to do?
00:18:00He'll make your miss or stiff arm him.
00:18:02Stiff arm him.
00:18:02But look at that, Jay.
00:18:03Look at these graphs right here.
00:18:04You remember that movie, The Odd Couple with Jack Klugman and Felix Unger?
00:18:09Remember those guys, The Odd Couple?
00:18:11This is the game, man.
00:18:13Buffalo, look at that.
00:18:15First in scoring, second in total offense against a defense that's first and second.
00:18:21And then you got the lousy offense of the Vikings.
00:18:24You see it on the top right.
00:18:26But the struggling Bills defense on the bottom left, anything could go in this game.
00:18:31It's the best against the worst on both sides.
00:18:33It's the best against the worst.
00:18:34But we also know that when the Bills are playing bad on defense, they're still winning
00:18:38games.
00:18:38I mean, other teams can score 30 points because of Josh Allen.
00:18:41So, you know.
00:18:42Offense sells tickets.
00:18:43Defense wins championships.
00:18:45I'm taking Minnesota.
00:18:46Skull, baby.
00:18:47They're going to get after him.
00:18:48I'm going to do it.
00:18:48This is going to be a hell of a game.
00:18:49That's going to be a great game.
00:18:50I can't wait.
00:18:50Yeah.
00:18:51Good Monday night matchup.
00:18:52All right.
00:18:52Let's go to Gruden's Grease Board presented by the Chevy Silverado.
00:18:55So, both Gruden's Grease Board and the Gruden Family Football Show is presented by the next
00:18:58generation Chevy Silverado, the most powerful and advanced Silverado ever, combining serious
00:19:03capability, advanced technology, and a bold commanding design and the kind of confidence
00:19:06you want when the pressure is on.
00:19:08Visit Chevy.com to learn why the next generation Silverado is leading the league.
00:19:12All right, John.
00:19:13We're going to talk about the Giants and the Eagles.
00:19:14And I was talking to you before the show.
00:19:16And I said, listen, the Eagles have lost six straight.
00:19:18They're gross.
00:19:19And you said, they make me want to puke.
00:19:21So, we're not going to talk about the Philadelphia Eagles much.
00:19:23No, I don't want to talk about it.
00:19:24We don't have to talk about the Philadelphia Eagles.
00:19:25Yeah, they got four or five false starts on offense last week.
00:19:28They go the wrong way in pass protection.
00:19:30One time, the back doesn't chip.
00:19:32The quarterback gets smashed.
00:19:33And defensively, I don't know, Jonathan Grenard, I keep waiting.
00:19:37He doesn't perform like he's supposed to.
00:19:40They blow a coverage.
00:19:41Quinion Mitchell, as good as he is, he gets run by.
00:19:45But the Giants.
00:19:46The Giants.
00:19:47Here's a ticket.
00:19:48I want to get on the party bus of the Giants.
00:19:50They've scored over 27 points, I think, in the last four games.
00:19:54They got a young quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, who I think played great against Houston.
00:19:59I mean, I know it's only been a game and a half.
00:20:01But when you watch the New York Giants against the Houston Texans on the road, their running game and their
00:20:09passing game, they got big-time players.
00:20:11At the end of overtime, they run 92 duo, J., for 42 yards.
00:20:17And you see Maui Noah and Illuminor double-team the defensive tackle.
00:20:23And it is awesome up to the onside backer.
00:20:26Brian Hudson and Runyon, boom!
00:20:29I mean, they get two double-teams.
00:20:31I mean, Patrick Ricard, the straw man that stirs the drink.
00:20:35And Manhurst, they get those blocks.
00:20:37The receiver, he comes in there and knifes to get to the nickelback.
00:20:42And here comes Skadaboo down the freaking pipe.
00:20:45And he makes Bullock, a Pro Bowl safety, disappear.
00:20:49He runs for 42 yards.
00:20:51Lasseter has to run him down.
00:20:53Then they run one of my favorite plays, a wham, the F-wham.
00:20:58And again, Runyon at left guard against that three technique.
00:21:02He slips that defensive tackle and goes and gets the linebacker.
00:21:06You see Andrew Thomas block out.
00:21:08There's Hudson and Maui Noah pushing it up to the mic.
00:21:11Nice job on the drive block by Illuminor.
00:21:14Here's the straw man.
00:21:15Pow!
00:21:16He whams that three technique.
00:21:18And there goes Devin Singletary.
00:21:20And there's Bullock again.
00:21:22Woo!
00:21:22It's a touchdown.
00:21:2342 yards, 26 yards, game over.
00:21:26But what I love is J.J. McCarthy throwing the ball down the field to Malik Nabors.
00:21:33What has he got, four straight games with 100 yards?
00:21:35I call this thing steamer snag.
00:21:39Here's your two snag routes by Isaiah Likely.
00:21:42They're other tight end.
00:21:43They run snag routes.
00:21:44Here's Mooney out here.
00:21:46He locks that hitch.
00:21:47And here's our guy, Nabors, against Lasseter, who's a Pro Bowl corner last year.
00:21:52He gets outside leverage.
00:21:54McCarthy looks off the safety.
00:21:56He drops a perfect 42-yard pass in there, man.
00:22:00Unbelievable.
00:22:01And then late in the game, I call this thing shin over here.
00:22:05It's ex-shin.
00:22:06You got an in route with a deeper in.
00:22:08Don't ask me why.
00:22:08I call that shin.
00:22:10And then we had a Z corner over here.
00:22:12But this is Malik Nabors against Stingley, arguably the best corner in the league.
00:22:18Stingley has outside leverage, press coverage.
00:22:20So my guy Nabors goes inside.
00:22:23He sticks them.
00:22:24Runs the.
00:22:24Look, there's a window this big, and McCarthy laid it in there for a 28-yard game.
00:22:28So they're running the ball with Greg Roman and this old-school run attack with a couple
00:22:35really good different backs, a much-improved offensive line.
00:22:38And when they need to throw it, I think they have one of the hottest receivers in football
00:22:43and neighbors.
00:22:43He's totally healthy, thank God.
00:22:46And J.J.
00:22:47McCarthy is potentially the story of the year.
00:22:51You know what's funny about that high corner?
00:22:53Kyler Murray had about three of them against the Lions.
00:22:55It should have been huge plays, and he missed all three.
00:22:57Yeah, he did.
00:22:58And J.J.
00:22:58McCarthy drops them in the dime.
00:22:59So there's some questions there in Minnesota about this J.J.
00:23:02McCarthy guy.
00:23:03Why'd you let him go?
00:23:04Yeah, and John Harbaugh, we know, is very good coming off a bye.
00:23:07He's 15-3 coming off of the bye.
00:23:08And the Giants are still leading the NFC East.
00:23:11We started the show talking about how we're going into halftime.
00:23:13What they're doing in New York is incredible.
00:23:15They're having fun, too.
00:23:17You can just see it on the sidelines.
00:23:19Harbaugh has brought a really good environment there.
00:23:21He's got a veteran coaching staff.
00:23:23They have some really cool, high-profile players, young guys.
00:23:27They've lost 13 straight games, though, at Philly.
00:23:30This has been a tough place for them to win.
00:23:32We talked about the Browns struggling at Pittsburgh last week.
00:23:36I want to see the Giants put a fork in Philadelphia and really start this.
00:23:41They could sweep the Philadelphia Eagles, which would be huge.
00:23:44Yeah, being favored on the road versus Philly is crazy for the Giants.
00:23:48But, I mean, you look at what Philly has done, it makes sense.
00:23:51Are you also riding with the Giants?
00:23:53Yeah, they can't run block and they can't pass protect.
00:23:55They miscommunicate up front.
00:23:56Their offensive line is atrocious right now.
00:23:58They're bad.
00:23:59So, yes, and the Giants have a very formidable pass rush.
00:24:02They're starting to blitz a lot more,
00:24:04putting a lot more pressure on the quarterback.
00:24:06They're not going to let, they're not going to let Saquon Barkley beat them.
00:24:09They're not embarrassing.
00:24:10They're also coming off a bye, Jay, which, as you know, you get Holland,
00:24:14you get some of these players some rest, which they desperately need.
00:24:18Saquon's going to be fired up for this one,
00:24:19but I don't know if he's going to be able to get off.
00:24:20There are very few insults that really hit as well as this team makes me want to puke.
00:24:25And the Philadelphia Eagles makes John Gruden want to puke.
00:24:29Makes me sad.
00:24:31I love the Eagles.
00:24:32Do you?
00:24:33I used to.
00:24:34Yeah.
00:24:34Not this year.
00:24:35Used to bitch all the time about going to that stadium and working at 3 in the morning.
00:24:38You know, I used to go to the veteran's stadium.
00:24:40There's an old security guy there.
00:24:42It's like 4 o'clock in the morning, pitch black.
00:24:45I'd see these cats now that were bigger than Jay.
00:24:47These are like 100-pound cats walking around veteran's stadium.
00:24:50So I said, hey, what's with the cats?
00:24:52He goes, the cats eat the rats.
00:24:55You want cats or rats?
00:24:56I said, I'll take the cats.
00:24:58There's big rats walking around in there.
00:25:00Yeah.
00:25:00The cats were probably big because the rats were so big.
00:25:03I got to erase my board.
00:25:05Okay.
00:25:05Now it's time for the Sunday night football game, the Bucs at the Bears, John.
00:25:09So listen, the Bucs beat the Falcons.
00:25:11Very happy for you.
00:25:12But the fact that they won without completing a single pass versus Atlanta is crazy.
00:25:17And I know the rain was wild.
00:25:18Bucky Irving had 170 yards.
00:25:20Kenneth Gainwell, 140 yards.
00:25:22But still, not completing a pass is probably not going to work playing against the Chicago
00:25:27Bears.
00:25:27Well, Mike Penix completed four to Tampa.
00:25:29You can see why they didn't throw in that weather.
00:25:31But when you look at the Bucs, Jay, the last two weeks, I mean, the statistics are startling.
00:25:37I mean, what they've done running the ball, they've only thrown 14 passes in two weeks.
00:25:42So when you have 582 yards, you got to give the offensive line of the Bucs credit.
00:25:47And I know we talk about Bucky, we talk about Gainwell, we talk about the offensive coordinator,
00:25:53the head coach.
00:25:54But look at these guys, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive line.
00:25:58Their line coach's name is Kevin Carberry, a guy that you know.
00:26:01Yeah, he worked for me.
00:26:02But he is, he's put together.
00:26:05I call him everything he knows.
00:26:06Yeah.
00:26:06The Carberry Crushers.
00:26:08So on Monday night in Chicago, you see Tristan Wirfs.
00:26:11Nobody's better at left tackle than Wirfs.
00:26:14Bredesen at left guard.
00:26:15Graham Barton, first round pick.
00:26:17They got at center.
00:26:18And Cody Malk, who missed last season, is back playing right guard.
00:26:22Lou Gedecky is healthy.
00:26:23These guys run counters.
00:26:25They run every run under the book.
00:26:27They disguise.
00:26:29Excuse me, I'm all choked up.
00:26:30Look at me, I can't even talk.
00:26:31Look at these guys.
00:26:32But these guys can run the rock.
00:26:34They're physical.
00:26:35They can pull.
00:26:35They're great on the second level.
00:26:37They have two very good backs.
00:26:39And then when you look at the Bears, shit, I love watching the Bears running game.
00:26:43They got a great offensive line coach.
00:26:45I call him Dan Rauscher.
00:26:46He used to be with Sean Payton at the Saints.
00:26:49Great coach.
00:26:50These are the Roushers' road graders, man.
00:26:53And it all starts at right tackle to me.
00:26:55Run right because of Darnell Wright.
00:26:58You saw the fourth and one play against Seattle.
00:27:01Good God.
00:27:02Jonah Jackson at right guard.
00:27:04Bradbury came over from Minnesota.
00:27:06Joe Tooney's been all pro 100 times.
00:27:08And their left tackle, this young kid's coming on.
00:27:11But two excellent offensive lines that really control the line of scrimmage.
00:27:15And time of possession's insane between these two teams.
00:27:18They dominate the line of scrimmage.
00:27:20They move people.
00:27:21You know, a lot of these offensive lines that can't run the ball, they're just stagnant at the point of
00:27:25attack.
00:27:25Both these teams get movement.
00:27:27They displace the linemen.
00:27:28And they give the backs multiple areas to make cuts from.
00:27:31And they do a great job.
00:27:32And both teams, especially the Buccaneers, which you didn't mention, have receivers that won't block.
00:27:37I mean, Stills, Godwin.
00:27:38I mean, these guys went in there and made some plays.
00:27:40How about the Bears receivers?
00:27:41Bears receivers.
00:27:42They'll knock your face off, too.
00:27:43Tight ends you didn't mention.
00:27:44But, yes, it's fun to watch.
00:27:46You've got to be totally committed to run the football.
00:27:48All 11 people have to be committed.
00:27:50The quarterback has to get the team in the right run, send a motion at the right time.
00:27:53The linemen got to come off tight ends.
00:27:55Receivers got to block first four.
00:27:57Sometimes an end.
00:27:57Sometimes a backer.
00:27:59And that's what was most impressive to me is watching the receivers block.
00:28:02They didn't catch a ball.
00:28:03They didn't bitch one time.
00:28:04There was no bad body language.
00:28:06These guys, I got to block an end now on a toss crack?
00:28:08Okay.
00:28:08It was awesome.
00:28:10But I do think you're not going to be able to win this game being one-dimensional.
00:28:14No.
00:28:14I like the Bears.
00:28:15I'm on the Giants wagon, and I'm on the Bears wagon after that opening drive
00:28:19against Seattle.
00:28:20They knocked their ass off.
00:28:22I mean, Colston Loveland on the first play of the game, he hit Hall, and it was a mission
00:28:26statement.
00:28:27But I do think the Bears will get you in third down.
00:28:31And Dennis Allen, this Chicago Bear defense on third down, they're unbelievable.
00:28:36And every week, they have a different package.
00:28:38They have the 32 double mug package.
00:28:40They got double trouble.
00:28:41And last week against Seattle, they gave them double A's throughout the whole game.
00:28:46And Seattle, I think, was one for 12 on third down.
00:28:48I mean, good God.
00:28:49One time in the red zone, they line up with double A's.
00:28:52They got the two defensive tackles.
00:28:54One of those tackles is Jeffrey Simmons, by the way.
00:28:57Two defensive ends.
00:28:58And there's Bush.
00:28:59There's T.J. Edwards.
00:29:01And on the snap of the ball, they bring them both.
00:29:03So the center gets one.
00:29:04The back gets the other.
00:29:05And the defensive tackles loop to contain.
00:29:08They drop both defensive ends, Jay.
00:29:11They play man-to-man here, man-to-man there.
00:29:14Thienemann, the safety comes down to cover the tight end.
00:29:16And guess what they did over here to Jackson Smith and Jigba?
00:29:19They jump inside, and the safety cuts over the top.
00:29:22Not today, Jackson Smith and Jigba.
00:29:25And they drop both defensive ends to get help on potential crossing routes there off the field.
00:29:31Then the next third down, they show you the double A's again.
00:29:34There's your two three techniques.
00:29:36There's your two defensive ends.
00:29:38And now, one of the linebackers, you'll see Bush cover the back.
00:29:42The other linebacker, he pops out.
00:29:44He's the plugger, keying the quarterback, looking for scrambling.
00:29:47And they play man-to-man everywhere.
00:29:49And you see a square end that the Seattle Seahawks throw to their young receiver.
00:29:55And what did Cam Lewis do?
00:29:56He bit his face off.
00:29:58Kabam!
00:29:58I mean, they play great one-plug defense.
00:30:01And then, in the red zone, they can line up and disguise coverages.
00:30:06They did a hell of a job.
00:30:07They know Seattle only throws the ball to one guy.
00:30:10Who is it?
00:30:11Jackson Smith and Jigba.
00:30:12They don't throw the ball over here.
00:30:14They don't throw the ball to the tight end.
00:30:16So, they play man-to-man on the X.
00:30:18They play man-to-man against A.J. Barner.
00:30:21And they play man-to-man against the back.
00:30:23Because they don't throw them the passes.
00:30:25But over here, they disguise.
00:30:27They use Stevenson and they use Cam Lewis to double Cooper Cup.
00:30:33And what do they do in the slot with Kyler Gordon and the safety?
00:30:36They double Jackson Smith and Jigba.
00:30:39So, you're really now not able to throw the ball to your top two receivers.
00:30:43And you got Sweat.
00:30:45And now you got Jeffrey Simmons.
00:30:47Good luck.
00:30:48I wish the Bucs well.
00:30:50They haven't thrown the ball much at all since Baker came back.
00:30:53They didn't throw it very good with Baker when they had Baker.
00:30:56So, I'm going to take the Bears.
00:30:58As much as I love Tampa, I just think Caleb Williams, Jay.
00:31:02I think he's playing great.
00:31:03I think he is the difference maker in this game.
00:31:05Yeah, he's playing great.
00:31:07You know, they've won the three straight since he's come back from his injury.
00:31:10But also the energy around this team.
00:31:11Everything you're talking defensively, offensively, it's all clicking for them.
00:31:14And all credit to Tampa Bay for winning that game.
00:31:17But you're not winning a game not throwing a single pass against the Chicago Bears.
00:31:20No, no.
00:31:21The Chicago Bears do everything great right now.
00:31:24The defense is great.
00:31:25But offensively, they do all the little things perfect.
00:31:27They run block.
00:31:28They do everything.
00:31:29And when it's third and sixth, and Caleb Williams is patient, man, he's not forcing the ball
00:31:33down the field.
00:31:34He'll throw a four-yard little check down, and Swift will make somebody miss and get the
00:31:37first down, move the chains, and oh, God, here we go.
00:31:39Three more downs of this bludgeoning with the offensive line.
00:31:42And there's the play pass.
00:31:43And here comes, you know, whoever burdened across the field for a big play.
00:31:47They got a lot of ways to hurt you.
00:31:48They're very consistent in what they do.
00:31:50Their approach is solid.
00:31:51And they're very comfortable in how they attack defenses.
00:31:55And they're very good.
00:31:56So, I like the Bears as well.
00:31:57The Buccaneers' passing game is a big concern.
00:31:59Obviously, the running game is great.
00:32:00But that can't last.
00:32:02There's no way.
00:32:02Can't last against the Chicago Bears.
00:32:03It's going to be who can play bully ball the best.
00:32:05Bucs have won bully ball the last two weeks.
00:32:07The Bears have won bully ball.
00:32:09Who's going to be the big bully on the block?
00:32:10Burden, the receiver on the goal line, what he did at Tai Okada.
00:32:14I mean, body slam.
00:32:15They throw a bubble screen out there on third and four.
00:32:18And Roma Dunze, he takes my favorite guy, Witherspoon.
00:32:21Boom!
00:32:22He locks them out.
00:32:23I mean, they did a hell of a job now.
00:32:24Fourth and one.
00:32:25Everybody knew they were running behind Darnell Wright.
00:32:28The Chicago Bears, I mean, I'm sold.
00:32:31I'm really excited about the Bears, obviously.
00:32:34And I'm hoping Tampa will win, but I don't think so.
00:32:37So, it's kind of a win-win either way, though.
00:32:39It's either your team wins or you're right about the Chicago Bears.
00:32:41Let's go to straight up football.
00:32:43We're going to start with the Bengals at the Falcons.
00:32:45Now, we talked about how the Bengals hung really close with the Titans.
00:32:48They end up beating them.
00:32:48But Joe Burrow, Jay, he had an absolute day putting up video game numbers, 462 yards,
00:32:54five touchdowns, three interceptions.
00:32:56And meanwhile, when you look at the Falcons, Michael Penix, we talked two weeks ago, he
00:33:00was the hero.
00:33:01If Michael Penix is on the field for Atlanta, they're playing really well.
00:33:03It was a disaster last week against the Bucs.
00:33:06And I understand the rain was there, but four interceptions.
00:33:08This is a tale of two different quarterbacks.
00:33:10It is.
00:33:11Joe Burrow's unbelievable.
00:33:13He had turnovers.
00:33:13He overcame them.
00:33:14And the touchdown passes, he had the level of difficulty, and these touchdown passes were
00:33:18a high level as well.
00:33:19They're not like Dinkin' Ducks and guys are running screen routes for 50 yards.
00:33:22These are down-the-field shots, a deep corner to T. Higgins, a deep post to Jamar Chase on
00:33:27third and 18.
00:33:28He is dropping dimes.
00:33:29He takes a lot of chances, so therefore he might throw some picks.
00:33:32You just got to be careful against this Falcon team if you're going to turn the ball over
00:33:35and start out 13-0 like they have the last two weeks.
00:33:38They've been down 13-0 the last two weeks against Bijon.
00:33:41They're going to have trouble stopping to run the Bengals.
00:33:42And if they have trouble stopping to run, then maybe the Falcons can play some bully
00:33:46ball, keep Joe Burrow on the sideline.
00:33:48That is the only chance the Falcons have to win if that can happen.
00:33:51I forgot to start the timer for Jay, so do you want me to wait?
00:33:54That was way under 30.
00:33:55That was over 30.
00:33:55I hit the timer.
00:33:56I'll be quick.
00:33:56That was way under 30.
00:33:57This game is in Madrid.
00:33:58Is that in Spain?
00:33:59It's in Spain.
00:34:00Yes, it is.
00:34:00Madrid, Spain.
00:34:01The Falcons, think about this formula for success.
00:34:04We give up 325 yards rushing and throw four picks.
00:34:09Not good.
00:34:10That didn't work last week.
00:34:11It ain't going to work this week.
00:34:12Joe Burrow, he's just too good.
00:34:14As good as he played, I could tell he was pissed because of those three interceptions.
00:34:18A couple of them he would never do again.
00:34:21But I think Joe Burrow, the Bengals, I think they are legit.
00:34:24Their defense, they got an eye-opening experience last week.
00:34:27But the Bengals are going to keep rolling.
00:34:29The Falcons are in trouble.
00:34:31And I think Cincinnati's going to get after them early and put them away.
00:34:34Let's go to the Broncos at the Panthers.
00:34:37Now, the Broncos knock off the Chiefs.
00:34:39And, Jay, we've given a lot of shit to Bo Nix.
00:34:42He's been up and down.
00:34:43Does he need a gummy?
00:34:44He did deliver last week, 222 yards, two touchdowns.
00:34:48What do you expect from the Broncos at the Panthers?
00:34:49Well, if they're behind in the fourth quarter, I expect the Broncos to win.
00:34:53They have a lot.
00:34:54And if it's a close, if it's a one-score game, they've won 15 times in a row.
00:34:57The Broncos have.
00:34:58This is a great testament to a quarterback of not letting previous plays affect his next play.
00:35:03He doesn't care if he struggles in the first three quarters.
00:35:05He's going to come out and grind in the fourth quarter and eke out a win.
00:35:08And everybody will say, God, the ball wasn't very good.
00:35:10But, hey, the Broncos won again.
00:35:12And that's what the Broncos are right now.
00:35:14They're playing great defense.
00:35:15The Panthers have had trouble protecting the quarterback.
00:35:17That's not good against Denver.
00:35:19But the Panthers have to bounce back in a big way.
00:35:22They have to get back to the passing game, getting the ball down the field to the receivers for them
00:35:25to have a chance.
00:35:26But I don't think they can because of the pass rush at Denver.
00:35:28I like Denver in this game.
00:35:29Yeah, John, Carolina allowed six sacks last week against the Packers.
00:35:33They cannot keep Bryce Young off the ground.
00:35:36It's not good.
00:35:37You know, I don't like Carolina right now where they're heading.
00:35:39I know they're coming off a mini-bye after that Thursday game.
00:35:43But they fired their defensive coordinator.
00:35:45Their defense, they're missing both starting corners.
00:35:48They gave Jalen Phillips a ton of money to rush the passer.
00:35:51He hasn't played all year, really.
00:35:53They're a mess on defense.
00:35:54And Sean Payton and Bo Nix, I think they get right here.
00:35:58I think they do a lot of things on offense, getting confident, using Jonah Coleman more.
00:36:03I love the way they came back and won that game against the Chiefs.
00:36:06I'm taking Denver to really roll up Carolina this week.
00:36:10All right, another team that we like to talk about.
00:36:12Sometimes they break your heart, John.
00:36:13The Cowboys at the Colts.
00:36:15Now, the Colts did bench Daniel Jones last week for Anthony Richardson,
00:36:18but he will start this week against Dallas.
00:36:20Shane Seiken has absolutely said that's going to happen.
00:36:23But the Cowboys, this defense is a major problem.
00:36:27Major problem.
00:36:28If I'm Shane Steiken this week, Jay, I'm going to put Anthony Richardson in the game,
00:36:32not as the starter, but I'm going to have a package of plays.
00:36:35This Cowboy defense, they're horrible.
00:36:38I mean, they can't play cover four, cover two, cover one.
00:36:41They can't play any coverages.
00:36:42And for them to play like they did last week, and you're Shane Steiken,
00:36:46you've got to pull out all the stops.
00:36:48We will not punt in this game.
00:36:49We'll go for it on fourth and sixth or less every single time
00:36:52because these guys, they don't stop anybody.
00:36:56They're reeling.
00:36:57The Cowboys underneath coverage is a mess.
00:37:00I mean, they play cover four, they get beat inside.
00:37:02They don't play with proper leverage.
00:37:04They miss tackles.
00:37:05They don't communicate.
00:37:06I'm going to take a shocker here.
00:37:08I'm going to take the Colts at home.
00:37:11I just think Daniel Jones, Shane Steiken, a little bit of Anthony Richardson,
00:37:14a lot of Jonathan Taylor.
00:37:16I don't think the Cowboys are in a good space right now at all.
00:37:18It feels like that was a little bit of a pick from a pain place, you know,
00:37:22because he's been riding with the Cowboys so much.
00:37:24Well, he's right.
00:37:24I mean, they had a minute to go in the game,
00:37:26and they had Gardner Mitchell at his own 20 with no timeouts left,
00:37:28and they ended up losing the game.
00:37:29So you've got to get a stop with a minute to go and no timeouts left.
00:37:33Your defense has to play better.
00:37:34I think that they're going to light a fire under the Cowboys' ass.
00:37:37I think Jerry Jones will do something to put fear in these guys' hearts
00:37:40and they're going to come out and play better.
00:37:41I'm disappointed more in the Cowboy offense than I am their defense.
00:37:44Yeah.
00:37:45I mean, they had second and two, a chance to close the game out.
00:37:47They line up in all these big tight ends.
00:37:49C.D. Lamb and Pickens are on the bench.
00:37:51It's 2-0-2 to go in the game.
00:37:53They got a free play, basically, before the two-minute warning,
00:37:55and they run a spider play to these big, slow, tight ends,
00:37:58and Lamb and Pickens are on the bench.
00:38:00And they don't get it.
00:38:01They get sacked, and they have to kick a field goal,
00:38:02and then Arizona goes down and scores with a minute to go.
00:38:05So, the Cowboy offense has got to play better.
00:38:07I'm taking the Cowboys to win it.
00:38:10You hate to get run out of sand right there.
00:38:12No, no, no, no, no, no.
00:38:13You looked at it, and you just, like, went warp speed.
00:38:15You know you can talk for a little bit longer.
00:38:17It is your show.
00:38:18I know, but he's pointing at the thing.
00:38:19It's his show.
00:38:20I'm like Ed McMahon on this show.
00:38:22I just laugh at his jokes.
00:38:23It's the Gruden family football show.
00:38:25So sensitive.
00:38:25I did notice that.
00:38:27As soon as you saw it, it was just panic.
00:38:29Absolute panic.
00:38:29All right, let's go to the Jets at the Chiefs, Jay.
00:38:32So, Kansas City now lost two games in a row.
00:38:34They've only scored 27 points over the last two games,
00:38:37and it just seems like what the hell is going on
00:38:39with this Chiefs offense that we know is so good?
00:38:41Well, you got three picks in the top ten next year.
00:38:43That's a good thing.
00:38:44Great.
00:38:44They're not very good.
00:38:45They scored six straight times.
00:38:47One of the first teams ever to score six straight times and lose.
00:38:51That's how bad their defense is.
00:38:52Offensively, they've got some good weapons.
00:38:54Braylon Allen's playing pretty well.
00:38:56Garrett Wilson's a good player.
00:38:57Hadn't been very productive.
00:38:58But defensively is where the biggest concern is.
00:39:00They have a defensive-minded head coach.
00:39:01They're not very good on defense.
00:39:02The Chiefs are going to be hungry, and they're going to be pissed,
00:39:05and the Chiefs are going to win the game.
00:39:07All right, John?
00:39:07Yeah, I don't think there's any question.
00:39:09I am disappointed in the Jets.
00:39:12I thought they'd take a step forward defensively,
00:39:14but they're not very good.
00:39:16They make a lot of mistakes.
00:39:18Kenneth Walker, he's been quiet the last two games.
00:39:21They've got to get their running game going again,
00:39:23and I expect Kelsey and Rasheed Rice to have big days.
00:39:26The Chiefs have got to get a pass rush, man.
00:39:28They don't get any pressure.
00:39:28It's killing me.
00:39:29Yeah, Chiefs fans are not handling it well either.
00:39:32Let's go to the Lions at the Dolphins.
00:39:34Now, the Lions did hand the Vikings their first loss of the season.
00:39:36We talked a lot about Detroit last week, John, from their defense.
00:39:39Also, Jared Goff, he threw his first interception versus the Vikings
00:39:42but responded with that game-winning touchdown.
00:39:44The Lions at 5-2 you have to feel pretty good about.
00:39:46I do.
00:39:47Remember Jack Campbell, their great linebacker.
00:39:50We're all hoping he comes out of this injury.
00:39:52We don't know the extent of it,
00:39:54but that will take a lot out of you as a football team.
00:39:57When you lose that kind of a guy, that kind of player.
00:40:00They also lost Brian Branch, DJ Wanham to concussions.
00:40:04They have some injuries that are mounting.
00:40:06Head coach Jeff Halfley of the Dolphins played Detroit twice a year
00:40:10when he was a D coordinator of the Packers.
00:40:12So he knows the Lions.
00:40:14I think it's going to be a lot closer.
00:40:15I think it's going to be a tight game, but the Lions will find a way to win.
00:40:19I was so impressed with this Vakai guy, the backup running back.
00:40:23I'm like, who the hell is this guy?
00:40:25He and Gibbs will be too much for Miami.
00:40:27I'm taking Detroit.
00:40:28Jay?
00:40:29Upset special, man.
00:40:30I'm taking Miami.
00:40:31Too many injuries on defense.
00:40:32Ollie Gordon got yelled at because he got an unsportsmanlike conduct.
00:40:35The coach benched him for a series or two, man.
00:40:37I think the coach needs to take the approach that Mike Gundy did at Oklahoma State
00:40:41when he got in trouble in the offseason, Ollie.
00:40:43He goes, what's the punishment for Ollie?
00:40:45I'm going to give him the ball 50 times.
00:40:46That's what I'm going to do.
00:40:47And that's exactly what they need to do.
00:40:50Ollie Gordon is going to have a huge day for Miami.
00:40:52Jameer Gibbs, what he showed last week against the Minnesota Vikings,
00:40:55he's the best back in football, and it's not even close.
00:40:58It's close, but he is unbelievable.
00:40:59But still, I think the injuries on defense will allow Malik Willis
00:41:02to make some plays with his legs and with his arm,
00:41:05and I think Dolphins will shock the world.
00:41:07Upset special.
00:41:08Miami Dolphins, the 1-6 Miami Dolphins.
00:41:10All right, Coach, last week you went to bat for the Browns.
00:41:13You love the Cleveland Browns.
00:41:15They lose to the Steelers.
00:41:16They're playing the Saints.
00:41:18All the Cleveland momentum, are you completely concerned with it,
00:41:21or do you think you just look back at playing Pittsburgh and say,
00:41:23okay, that's playing Pittsburgh?
00:41:24Yeah, I'm disappointed.
00:41:25Deshaun had over 300 yards passing.
00:41:28Harold Fannin had a big day.
00:41:29But the Browns' defense gave up big plays.
00:41:32Let me show you this fake quick screen.
00:41:35They ran twice to Darnell Washington.
00:41:37I mean, the big guy comes across in motion.
00:41:40You see him coming from right to left.
00:41:41He breaks down like he's blocking, and he takes off down the far sideline.
00:41:46And as much as I love Swessinger, the linebacker,
00:41:49he got nose trouble and bit on the fake to Jeremy Bernard on the quick screen,
00:41:54and he got shredded twice.
00:41:56And then Jalen Warren, yeah, he had all these yards rushing, Jay.
00:42:00They ran two traps.
00:42:01I mean, two 10 traps for 74 yards.
00:42:06Two fake quick screens.
00:42:07Look at this trap right there, Jay, against those wide three techniques.
00:42:10Center blocks back.
00:42:11The right guard goes shorty to the backside backer.
00:42:14And the left guard just wham the three technique.
00:42:17Two traps for 74 yards.
00:42:21Two fake quick screens for 100 yards.
00:42:23So I'm not happy with the Browns.
00:42:26The Saints are coming off a bye week.
00:42:29They have a new run game coordinator.
00:42:31Hopefully they have more run game success.
00:42:34I'm going to take Tyler Shuck,
00:42:35partly because I'm upset with Cleveland after last week's performance.
00:42:39But I do like Shuck.
00:42:41I think they're going to get their first-round pick, too.
00:42:44I want to see this guy, Jordan Tyson.
00:42:46A-Chan might be back.
00:42:48Kelvin Banks might be back at left tackle.
00:42:50Remember, this is a Wednesday, everybody.
00:42:52So don't shoot the messenger if these guys do or don't play.
00:42:55But there is a chance those guys play and help the Saints win this game.
00:42:59All right, Jay, what do you think?
00:43:00The Saints have not been able to run the ball at all.
00:43:01But there is a glimmer of hope because of what the Steelers did to them last week.
00:43:05So hopefully the Saints can get the running game going.
00:43:07A-Chan will be a big spark for him.
00:43:09He's brought in for this reason, to be able to run the ball, make some big plays.
00:43:12I love Tyler Shuck from Louisville.
00:43:14And I think the Browns, Deshaun Watson's been sacked 33 times by far,
00:43:18the most in the National Football League.
00:43:20That's not a remedy for success.
00:43:21The running game's not good enough for them to drop back and throw it.
00:43:23I like the rookie receivers, but I think the Saints get a win as well.
00:43:26Remember how we would sit in our meetings and I would say,
00:43:29don't be a drive killer.
00:43:30I mean, when you're on offense and you get a sack, that's a drive killer.
00:43:3533 sacks.
00:43:36And then you put in the 32 offensive penalties they've had, the fumbles,
00:43:41the interceptions, the negative yardage run plays.
00:43:44The Browns, they get in their own way too much on offense.
00:43:49Don't be a drive killer.
00:43:50Don't be a drive killer.
00:43:51Don't do it.
00:43:52I'm going to take notes because we're going to go to the Texans.
00:43:54And I know you had me taking the notes for the four T's last week.
00:43:57So I'm going to take don't be a drive killer.
00:43:58So we're going to go to the Texans at the Chargers.
00:44:00And you want to talk about a game that makes people want to puke.
00:44:02The 2-5 Texans versus the 0-7 Chargers.
00:44:05Coach, where do you even go with this game?
00:44:07The Chargers haven't scored in 27 drives.
00:44:09Justin Herbert's a mess.
00:44:10Mike McDonald's offense is a mess.
00:44:12And the Texans are also a mess.
00:44:15Yeah, I'm going to take the Texans.
00:44:17I just can't.
00:44:18I can't go with the Chargers.
00:44:19They haven't scored a touchdown in 27 possessions.
00:44:21The longest streak since the Dolphins went 30 possessions.
00:44:25I think the offensive coordinator was the head coach of the Dolphins.
00:44:28You know, I call it compromising ball handling.
00:44:31When you're Justin Herbert and you've got to fake a handoff over here
00:44:35and then spin around over here and then read the defense from there to there,
00:44:41I don't know what these plays are.
00:44:43I don't like the Chargers right now.
00:44:47I'm going to take the Texans 13-10.
00:44:50Puke.
00:44:51I'd rather watch the Love Boat from 1970.
00:44:53Chargers came off a bye with unbelievable game plan.
00:44:55Man, the first three plays, they throw a check down, he drops it, they punt.
00:44:58Next three plays, they run three straight receiver screens.
00:45:01Incomplete, incomplete, incomplete.
00:45:03And then the next drive, they throw a pass and it's intercepted.
00:45:06That's how they came out of their body.
00:45:07Both interceptions Herbert throws are to Charlie Kolar.
00:45:10He's a blocking tight end.
00:45:12Where the hell is Quentin Johnston?
00:45:14Where are all these guys?
00:45:17This is where the Chargers, man, Dan Fouts, Phillip Rivers, Justin Herbert.
00:45:22I mean, three straight quick screens.
00:45:24I'm out of time.
00:45:25I'm sorry.
00:45:26I don't even think I ever flipped it.
00:45:27After I said I wanted to puke, I think I just forgot because I want to puke.
00:45:30Let's talk about the Cardinals at the Seahawks.
00:45:33I'm taking a Texas, too, by the way.
00:45:34Oh, I thought you already said that.
00:45:35My bad.
00:45:36If you took the Chargers, then it would be a really bad day.
00:45:39Cardinals at Seahawks.
00:45:40I know we mentioned Gardner Minshew earlier today.
00:45:42He will start against the Seahawks.
00:45:44Jacoby Brissett was benched.
00:45:46Who are you taking in this game, Jay?
00:45:47News, by the way.
00:45:48Oh.
00:45:53Breaking news.
00:45:54Breaking news.
00:45:54From Jake Malisek.
00:45:55I like Drew Locke a lot.
00:45:56I think that'll help him.
00:45:58Is it my turn?
00:45:59Did you start the clock?
00:46:00I did.
00:46:00I got to read.
00:46:01Start it over.
00:46:01Start it over.
00:46:02Well, I can't just start it over.
00:46:03I have to wait for the sand to go back.
00:46:05Here, hold on.
00:46:06Well, I mean, that's like a penalty on you.
00:46:10Well, I didn't.
00:46:11That's all right.
00:46:11I ask him a question.
00:46:12I watch a Cardinals defense against this high-powered cowboy offense.
00:46:17I mean, I was expecting them to run the ball, pound it.
00:46:20This guy, Andrew Billings, LJ Collier, Nolan was out.
00:46:24These guys played their ass off on defense.
00:46:26The credit to them, man.
00:46:27I mean, it was awesome to watch.
00:46:28So, LaFleur's doing a great job with this team.
00:46:31Brissett got benched.
00:46:32Here comes Minshew.
00:46:33They didn't bat an eye.
00:46:34They came back, and they won an unbelievable game for this team,
00:46:36this young football team, to get that type of experience on the road against Dallas.
00:46:40I think carries over against Seattle.
00:46:42They're going to play hard early, but over the course of a 60-minute game,
00:46:46the Seahawks are just way too talented, and I think they pull away late for an easy win.
00:46:49So, even with the breaking news, no Sam Darnold?
00:46:52Yes.
00:46:53Okay.
00:46:53All right, John.
00:46:53We do love Minshew.
00:46:55You coach Minshew.
00:46:56I like Minshew a lot.
00:46:56He's been down at the FFCA.
00:46:57I was so happy for him.
00:46:59Before we get into it real quick, I would have a teaching moment if I was a high school coach
00:47:03or a college coach or an NFL coach, and I would show Gardner Minshew
00:47:07and what Al Giers did coming off the bench.
00:47:10I mean, Jeremiah Love, Jacoby Brissett are out.
00:47:13These guys come into the game with a case of whoop-ass, man, and played great.
00:47:19But now they've got to go to the dark side.
00:47:20The dark side is the sore side today.
00:47:24They gave up 370 yards, 34 points to the Bears on a short week.
00:47:29I expect them to get right, get this win, but I'm really impressed with LeFleur,
00:47:34the head coach of Arizona.
00:47:35He's showing a lot of guts, man, trading Marvin Harrison,
00:47:39sitting down as starting quarterback.
00:47:40Their defense is playing through a ton of injuries.
00:47:43The kicker misses an extra point at the end of regulation.
00:47:46They find ways to win, man,
00:47:48and that's a great start for a great young head coach.
00:47:51I'm going to think it's going to be a close game,
00:47:53but I think Seattle gets it right.
00:47:55All right, let's finish with the Raiders at the 49ers.
00:47:59Now, the Raiders snapped their losing streak, John,
00:48:01and Kirk Cousins bought, and I say bought himself a little bit of time.
00:48:03He's played well, but it seems like every week
00:48:05that Fernando Mendoza conversation keeps going,
00:48:08it seems like that quiet down a little bit,
00:48:10and the 49ers coming off of a bye.
00:48:11What do you expect?
00:48:13The 49ers-Raiders.
00:48:14I mean, I used to see fans brawling in the stands.
00:48:17It'd be like the middle of the third quarter.
00:48:18I'd look up there and go, damn, this is a big rivalry.
00:48:21The 49ers have had the Raiders' number in San Francisco or Santa Clara.
00:48:26We haven't won there since 2000, by the way.
00:48:29That's a long time.
00:48:29I can remember that game.
00:48:30We'll get into that in a minute.
00:48:31But 49ers coming off a bye.
00:48:34They trade for DeForest Buckner.
00:48:36Perhaps Mike Evans is back.
00:48:38Perhaps Nick Bosa's back.
00:48:40I mean, they got Upton Stout.
00:48:42They got a lot of good players, I think.
00:48:43Debo, Samuel, that are going to come back and play.
00:48:46As much as I love the Raiders,
00:48:47I think I'm going to go with the 49ers at home.
00:48:51And I do like what Clint Kubiak is doing.
00:48:54I mean, Kirk Cousins, you can say whatever you want about Fernando Mendoza.
00:48:57He may never play if Cousins keeps playing like he's playing.
00:49:00What do you think, Jay?
00:49:02Yeah, Kirk has really figured out that a guy can still be covered and be open,
00:49:06and he's figured that out with Brock Bowers.
00:49:07That catch Brock Bowers had, Kirk would never throw when he was.
00:49:10So you would not throw it unless he was open.
00:49:12He's learned a lot.
00:49:13That was awesome, wasn't it?
00:49:13That was a great throw.
00:49:15But the Raiders have given up five games in a row of 30 points or more.
00:49:1849ers might score 60.
00:49:20I wish I had four players on the 49ers on my fantasy football team
00:49:23because this is going to be a high-scoring game for the 49ers,
00:49:26and the Raiders will have trouble keeping up,
00:49:27despite Kirk playing as good as he is.
00:49:30All right, so you mentioned that this rivalry means a lot to you.
00:49:33Let's go to the Reese's Vault.
00:49:34We love Reese's here.
00:49:35It is the official candy of Barstool Sports, the chocolate, the peanut butter.
00:49:39I took my son trick-or-treating last week.
00:49:41He's three, so he doesn't know.
00:49:42I'm stealing all the Reese's out of his bucket.
00:49:44It's the absolute best.
00:49:45Reese's, the official candy partner of Barstool.
00:49:47Go get Reese's wherever you shop, John.
00:49:49And you're saying that you're going to go back all the way to 2,000.
00:49:52Well, Raiders 49ers, October 8, 2000.
00:49:55We're 3-1, bro, heading into Candlestick to play the Niners,
00:50:00Jeff Garcia, Owens, Jerry Rice.
00:50:03And this is a game we've got to have.
00:50:05Al Davis, the owner of the Raiders, he wants this game.
00:50:08Bill Walsh is running the 49ers, legendary guys.
00:50:11And it's a blocking match.
00:50:14I mean, it's tight the whole game.
00:50:16Two turnovers by each team, two missed field goals by each team.
00:50:19We go to overtime.
00:50:21We go down there.
00:50:22We're going to win the game with a short 35-yard field goal.
00:50:24We miss it.
00:50:25They get the freaking ball.
00:50:27Go down there.
00:50:28They got a 28-yard field goal to put us away.
00:50:30Anthony Dorsett blocks it.
00:50:32And we go down the field, and it's third down and six with four minutes left in overtime, 28-28.
00:50:39Place is rocking.
00:50:41I'm standing on the sidelines with my sheet.
00:50:43I got my sheet in here.
00:50:45Look at this.
00:50:45From 2000.
00:50:47I got my Raider helmet.
00:50:49You see who it's autographed by?
00:50:51Tim Brown, Hall of Famer, Heisman Trophy.
00:50:54When I'm standing here like this, it's third and six, and I'm nervous.
00:50:57And Tim Brown says, hey, run 59 Dolphin.
00:51:01I go, run 59 Dolphin, he says three times.
00:51:04I go, hey, shut up, Tim.
00:51:06I'm the head coach.
00:51:07I'll call the plays.
00:51:08Let's go 59 Dolphin.
00:51:10And Tim Brown comes in motion, runs a flatten up for a walk-off 40-yard touchdown.
00:51:16Tim Brown, Tim Brown rate is 34, 49ers 28.
00:51:21You got to listen to your players.
00:51:22You got to listen to your great players.
00:51:24You still had to call it, though.
00:51:24You still had to say, okay, yes, I'm listening to you.
00:51:26I swear, you're sitting right there.
00:51:27Hey, call 59 Dolphin, man.
00:51:28Just call 59 Dolphin.
00:51:29I call 59 Dolphin, it worked.
00:51:31You listen to him.
00:51:31I got to meet with Tim Brown, and you'll see the interview.
00:51:34Yeah, let's roll it.
00:51:35Well, I'd like to welcome my old captain, Heisman Trophy winner, Hall of Fame, wide receiver,
00:51:42touchdown Tim Brown.
00:51:43Tim, how you doing, man?
00:51:44I'm doing good, Coach.
00:51:45How are you?
00:51:46Good.
00:51:47This is 49ers Raiders weekend.
00:51:51Used to be the Battle of the Bay, Northern California, Al Davis, Bill Walsh.
00:51:57I just want to take you back.
00:51:58I got the game plan.
00:52:00It was 2000, October the 8th.
00:52:04And I don't know if a lot of people realize this, but you used to tell me what to call.
00:52:08And most of the time, I would call what you wanted to hear.
00:52:11But we're in overtime.
00:52:13We're playing the Niners.
00:52:14We missed a couple field goals.
00:52:16It's a windy day in Candlestick.
00:52:1828-28.
00:52:204.50 left in overtime.
00:52:21We're on a timeout.
00:52:23And I'm thinking about what to call.
00:52:25I got my sheet here.
00:52:26And you said, hey, Gru, call 59 Dolphin.
00:52:30And I stood there.
00:52:32And you said, hey, Gru, call 59 Dolphin.
00:52:35I said, shut up, Tim.
00:52:36I'm the head coach.
00:52:37I'll call the place.
00:52:38Let's go 59 Dolphin.
00:52:41You came in motion.
00:52:43And you won the game with a walk-off touchdown.
00:52:46Take me back to that memory.
00:52:49Well, what I do remember is that we had ran the route where I just went to the flat a
00:52:56couple
00:52:56times and we had thrown me the ball at least once on that route.
00:53:01And he was really jumping that route.
00:53:04And I just figured, hey, look, if he's going to jump that, at least we're going to have a
00:53:09jump ball at the end.
00:53:10I'm going to at least get even with this guy if I don't go by him.
00:53:13I mean, he bit like I don't know what on the little flat route.
00:53:18And it was literally one of the easiest touchdowns, I believe, of my career, you know.
00:53:22So, you know, I mean, sometimes, you know, things come work out the way you dream they
00:53:29would.
00:53:29And I think in that situation, for me, it was just that.
00:53:34I was hoping that this guy would bite.
00:53:35He bit.
00:53:36And, you know, obviously, again, I made a great throw.
00:53:40You had seven catches for 172 yards in that game, two touchdowns.
00:53:44You seem to light up in this rivalry.
00:53:46Every time we played them in the preseason, you wanted to play the whole game.
00:53:50Can you summarize this weekend, the 4-4 Raiders playing the Niners, coming off a bye?
00:53:57Is there still any extra juice or incentive with this rivalry?
00:54:01You know, I mean, that's the thing, John, that I don't know, right?
00:54:05You know, because, you know, they're not in California anymore.
00:54:08You know what I mean?
00:54:09Maybe they don't feel that hatred that we felt towards those guys when we lined up
00:54:13against them.
00:54:13Whether it was preseason or not, you wanted to play as long as you could play to make
00:54:18sure you won the game.
00:54:19Because we knew we were going to be talking to Jerry Rice and Steve Young or whoever,
00:54:24whoever, at some golf event in the offseason.
00:54:27And it was going to come up, whether it was a preseason game or not.
00:54:31So, you know, so I think from that, I hope these guys some kind of way can feel that
00:54:37vitriol that we felt towards the 49ers.
00:54:41But I don't know.
00:54:42I don't know if they're able to get that because they're not there.
00:54:45They're not there anymore, you know?
00:54:47You know, they got a guy.
00:54:48The Raiders have a guy right now, Brock Bowers.
00:54:51I'm sure you've seen what this kid has done.
00:54:53Yeah.
00:54:54He's really not a tight end.
00:54:56He's really not a slot.
00:54:58He's you.
00:54:59He's a Z.
00:55:00He's an X.
00:55:01We would put you in the slot.
00:55:03We'd put you in motion.
00:55:04Every week, they come up with new patterns.
00:55:07I would just like to hear your summary of Brock Bowers and what you think of him.
00:55:13Yeah.
00:55:13You know, the one thing I love about him is he's what I call a radius guy, right?
00:55:18Just get the ball in a radius and he's going to find a way to make the catch.
00:55:21And, you know, I think he is going up against some of the best corners, not safeties, not
00:55:28linebackers, some of the best quarterbacks in the league, and he's still, you know, making
00:55:32catches.
00:55:33You know, I cannot imagine how great he's going to be when we finally bring in a number
00:55:38one receiver that he can have on the other side to take some of that pressure off him.
00:55:42Because right now, it is all on top of his head.
00:55:45I mean, if it's third and six or seven, they are expecting him to make a play some kind
00:55:50of way.
00:55:51And he's doing the best he can.
00:55:52You know, he's winning more than he's losing.
00:55:54And I think that's a beautiful thing.
00:55:57Well, you know what that's like until we got Jerry Rice.
00:56:00Everybody knew we were throwing you the ball.
00:56:02We had to do a lot of different things to try to get you the ball.
00:56:06But I just wanted to ask you a couple questions about being a great receiver.
00:56:10I think things maybe that people don't know.
00:56:13The four years I was with you in Oakland, you never missed a game.
00:56:18I mean, 64 games, 64 starts.
00:56:20I don't remember you ever missing a practice or a walkthrough or an OTA or a training
00:56:26camp practice.
00:56:27And I'm just curious, is there one or two secret recipes or things that you did to make
00:56:33that durability thing happen?
00:56:36You know, Coach, people obviously ask me about that quite a bit.
00:56:41And, you know, one of the things that, you know, I didn't drink.
00:56:44I was not a drinker.
00:56:45I never had a drink in my life.
00:56:47I think they had a big, big part of it because I never had moments where my body couldn't
00:56:52heal properly.
00:56:53Right.
00:56:53Because after a game, I didn't go drink.
00:56:56I didn't go do whatever.
00:56:57I went home and put on an ice machine on my knee or my shoulder or whatever, trying to
00:57:03recover for the walkthrough that we may have on Monday or whatever.
00:57:06So, you know, and I think I always kept or put my career in front of everything.
00:57:13You know, nothing was more important.
00:57:14When I got married at 30 years old, that was a big conversation I had to have with Sharice.
00:57:19Baby, some of the stuff I may do, you may not understand, but just go along with it,
00:57:23please.
00:57:24And obviously, she did a great job with that.
00:57:27But I don't know, Coach.
00:57:29Not that I don't think these guys take their careers seriously, but I think there's more
00:57:34playtime or party time out there, you know, during the season when, to me, that's the time
00:57:40that you ought to be working.
00:57:41You got the whole offseason to do whatever you want to do.
00:57:44But, you know, my thoughts on it was, hey, look, you know, you got one job to do right
00:57:50now.
00:57:50You know what I mean?
00:57:51You know, Archie used to say something way back in the day.
00:57:54You know, if your mom and dad are doing well, then nothing else should matter.
00:57:58Right.
00:57:58You know what I mean?
00:57:59And I think I sort of took that attitude with me as long as I possibly could.
00:58:04And, you know, I mean, look, working for you was not the hardest thing in the world to
00:58:08do.
00:58:08You know what I mean?
00:58:09The excitement that you brought, not only to the football field, but to the lot, to the
00:58:12meeting rooms, just made everybody, you know, look forward to being there every day.
00:58:16And we weren't going to miss the entertainment, Coach.
00:58:19No doubt about that.
00:58:21Last thing I got to ask you, my friend.
00:58:23Yes, sir.
00:58:24Does this still mean a lot to you?
00:58:26Yes, sir.
00:58:27We got the Miami Hurricanes, Tim.
00:58:30We got the Hurricanes.
00:58:31You see what I got on, Coach?
00:58:33I'm ready.
00:58:33I'm ready.
00:58:34I'm heading up Thursday, man.
00:58:35And, you know, it's going to be a great weekend.
00:58:39I got a lot of work up there.
00:58:41But they had the school newspaper to do a big deal, ranking all the players.
00:58:49And over the last 50 years, man, they ranked me number one.
00:58:53So there's going to be a little celebration during the game or whatever.
00:58:57So, yeah.
00:58:58So it's going to be a fun weekend.
00:58:59I'm looking forward to being back up there.
00:59:01Well, I looked at your record against the Canes.
00:59:03You didn't do too well against Miami.
00:59:05No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, it was, look, man, I tell people they
00:59:11changed the way I play football.
00:59:14My freshman year, Coach, I don't know if I ever told you this, my freshman year, we were playing them.
00:59:18We were up 28 to 7 at halftime or something like that.
00:59:22They came back and beat us 40, 45, 49 to 35.
00:59:28I mean, it was a hell whooping in the second half.
00:59:31So later in the fourth quarter, I get in the game, right?
00:59:33I'm running this dig route over the middle.
00:59:36And two of those safeties, man, they hit me so hard, man.
00:59:40And they were standing over me talking, man.
00:59:43And, Coach, they started calling my dad by name.
00:59:46They was like, hey, Eugene must be a real B-I-T-C-H because you ain't.
00:59:51I was like, what the – I went off the field.
00:59:55I said, hey, Coach, they calling my dad by name.
01:00:00And my coach, Mike Stock, man, little short Mike Stock.
01:00:03He was on 5'8".
01:00:03He grabbed me by my past, man.
01:00:06He said, Tim Brown, if you don't change your attitude, this is big-time college football.
01:00:11You won't be here much longer.
01:00:13And I tell you what, man, from that day on to the day I retired in Tampa Bay,
01:00:18nobody ever said anything to me that they didn't get it back.
01:00:21Because I didn't want anybody to walk away going, Tim Brown, let us say whatever he wanted to say.
01:00:26That didn't happen no more, that's for sure.
01:00:29Love you, brother.
01:00:30Thanks for joining me.
01:00:31Hey, take care of yourself, man.
01:00:33Hey, Houston, we have a problem.
01:00:35Okay, it's time for the shred line, which I will say, you know, we've done shred lines now up to
01:00:39eight weeks.
01:00:40This is week nine.
01:00:40And the shred that you had about the Houston Texans, I'm sure it's because I'm from Texas,
01:00:44so I have a lot of friends that are Texans fans, they loved that.
01:00:48They were pissed, but they loved it.
01:00:49So you've got to keep up the heat.
01:00:50What are we shredding this week?
01:00:52You know what I don't like?
01:00:53I don't like these teams that change uniforms.
01:00:56Oregon started doing that in college.
01:00:58Now all the pro teams are doing it.
01:01:00So I'm watching the game of the week, to me, Vikings and Lions.
01:01:03And I love the Lions, but I hate their new uniforms.
01:01:06I thought I was watching Carolina Panthers play the freaking Vikings.
01:01:11I thought I was looking for Jake DeLome or Jordan Gross or Moose and Muhammad.
01:01:16I mean, look at those uniforms last week.
01:01:18What the hell are they doing?
01:01:19They got some of the greatest uniforms ever.
01:01:22Go back and watch Barry Sanders and Herman Moore, Chris Spielman.
01:01:27Take a look at Lomas Brown, those light blue jerseys, those silver pants.
01:01:31What the hell was that?
01:01:31Yeah, I know.
01:01:32I feel like Oregon gets away with it because it's Oregon and it's college.
01:01:35But in the NFL, we don't need all that.
01:01:36We don't need it.
01:01:37I don't like that.
01:01:37Just stick with the uniforms.
01:01:38Do you have anything you'd like to shred?
01:01:40Not really.
01:01:41I think that I'm tired of having some of these games come down to a key referee call.
01:01:46This instant replay crap.
01:01:47I don't know what the hell is going on with the referees anymore.
01:01:49I mean, it's always a constant shred.
01:01:51I can shred that every week.
01:01:52There's always a game.
01:01:53There's always a play that if this would have happened differently, the game would have changed.
01:01:57But it is what it is.
01:01:58He called the game right.
01:01:59Let's get to the callers.
01:02:00I don't want to hear him whining about the refs.
01:02:03Well, let's hear a Browns fan whine.
01:02:05How about that?
01:02:05Yeah.
01:02:08Seriously, the fucking Browns season is absolutely fucking over.
01:02:14We traded the best player in the entire NFL for somebody who has 10 fucking tackles on a season, zero
01:02:22sacks, only got one fucking first-round pick, and our run defense is bottom fucking five.
01:02:32We suck balls.
01:02:33We're going to win, like, nine games for absolutely no fucking reason.
01:02:38We're going to have, like, the 20th pick.
01:02:41Jeez, get this guy off.
01:02:43I mean, you're in first place.
01:02:45A five and two.
01:02:46You go on a road, you lose.
01:02:48You bust a coverage on these quick screen think and goes.
01:02:52You can't stop a short trap.
01:02:53I understand the frustration.
01:02:55But didn't they get two first-round picks for Myles Garrett?
01:02:59Yeah.
01:03:00He said one.
01:03:01And verse.
01:03:02Let's do shred verse.
01:03:03I mean, no sacks and 200 rushes.
01:03:06And, you know, the trash talk really.
01:03:08He did get dropped on his head.
01:03:09He did get dropped.
01:03:10That's the play of the week right there.
01:03:11The play of the week was verse getting thrown on his head.
01:03:14That was replayed over and over on social media.
01:03:17Okay, let's.
01:03:18Do we have a call?
01:03:19Calling somebody back, Jake?
01:03:20We have somebody that wants to call you back.
01:03:22They want to talk to you again.
01:03:24All right.
01:03:24Let's roll it.
01:03:25Oh, good in.
01:03:27I've got a bone speak with you.
01:03:29You cut me off last time when I was talking about benching Sam Darnold.
01:03:33But look at him now.
01:03:34He's got the best wide receiver in football.
01:03:37And he's throwing 50% completion percentage in less than 200 yards.
01:03:41How does that even make sense?
01:03:42This guy's playing like Brad Johnson, your quarterback in 2003.
01:03:46Hey, cut that guy off.
01:03:48You know, the world champion, by the way, both of these guys.
01:03:52Don't need a fan like you calling in.
01:03:55I mean, Charles Cross didn't play.
01:03:57You just traded for Quentin Nelson, who didn't even know the snap count.
01:04:01You let Kenneth Walker leave for Rasheed Shaheed, who doesn't even suit up.
01:04:06You have no balance in your game.
01:04:08You got a new coordinator.
01:04:09I don't know what they're doing.
01:04:11But don't just blame Sam.
01:04:13I blame everybody involved.
01:04:16And that guy, you know, to have the gall to call out Brad Johnson.
01:04:21How do you call Brad Johnson in a negative way?
01:04:23That's fighting words, man.
01:04:25Where are you exactly?
01:04:27You're probably behind one of those, I don't know, you're probably behind, I don't know,
01:04:32one of those little shacks out there.
01:04:33Brad Johnson got me a sweet TV when I was like quality control guy for you as a Christmas kid.
01:04:39He's the best guy ever.
01:04:40I do like that he had to call back to try to correct him and then got roasted even more.
01:04:45So I'm sure he'll call back.
01:04:46All right, speaking of fans who can't take it anymore, the Dallas Cowboys.
01:04:50Let's roll it.
01:04:53Oh, my God.
01:04:56I can't do it with this team anymore.
01:05:01How do you let up three touchdowns to a forgotten third-string quarterback?
01:05:06I can't understand why we hired Jack Prescott's uncle and cousin, and he don't make no adjustments.
01:05:16He doesn't make no adjustments.
01:05:18We got Brian Schuttenheimer fucking making dumbass play calls, third and eight,
01:05:23and we're going to run you up the middle?
01:05:24I think they shut him down to 27 yards, John.
01:05:30All right, we got you.
01:05:31You know, when you give up a 63-yard game on a duo, okay, you got P.J. Locke in
01:05:37the open field.
01:05:38He misses a tackle, but two Cowboys blitzed in the same gap.
01:05:41You get gashed.
01:05:42Then there's a 52-yard run on a G toss where Froholt, the center for Arizona,
01:05:48I think he blocked Caleb Downs into the Fort Worth rodeo.
01:05:52He sent that guy flying.
01:05:54They blow coverages.
01:05:56They miss tackles.
01:05:57Like we said earlier, I don't know what their run fits are.
01:06:01They're bad on defense, and offensively, they just don't have the killer instinct.
01:06:06They look disinterested, man.
01:06:07You watch the Buccaneers, these teams that are physical, the Bears, the Cowboys receivers,
01:06:12when they block, they jog off the ball.
01:06:13If it's not a pass to them, they act like they don't want to play.
01:06:16And then they look disappointed.
01:06:17The ball's not coming to them.
01:06:18They raise their hand.
01:06:18I was open.
01:06:19They walk off the sideline.
01:06:20Their body language is as bad as I've ever seen on tape before.
01:06:23I can't stand it.
01:06:24How do you go in there and rough the passer helmet to helmet on third and 11 at that point
01:06:30in the game?
01:06:30You're off the field.
01:06:31The game's over.
01:06:32Rashawn Gary making a play like that for a veteran.
01:06:36It's gross.
01:06:37And then they always show Jerry Jones just having a meltdown somehow, like a mental meltdown.
01:06:41It's just not good in Dallas.
01:06:42And if they lose to the Colts this week, heads are going to roll.
01:06:46I'm going to call Shred Radio next week.
01:06:49It would be very funny if Jake just rolls it every week and it's just you shredding to you.
01:06:53All right.
01:06:54Anything else, guys?
01:06:55No.
01:06:56No?
01:06:56Great show.
01:06:57It was a fun show.
01:06:58It was a fun show.
01:06:59All right.
01:06:59We'll be back next week.
01:07:04We'll be back next week.
