In the deep oceans, there is a tiny creature that has unlocked the secret to biological immortality. Known scientifically as Turritopsis dohrnii, this microscopic jellyfish is smaller than a human pinky nail, yet it possesses an extraordinary superpower.
When this jellyfish faces severe environmental stress, physical damage, or starvation, it does not die like other animals. Instead, it triggers a rare biological process called transdifferentiation, which allows its existing cells to transform into entirely new types of cells.
During this transformation, the adult jellyfish absorbs its tentacles and shrinks down into a tiny blob. This blob settles on the ocean floor and transforms back into a polyp, the earliest stage of jellyfish life. From this polyp, a brand new clone of the jellyfish emerges.
Because it can repeat this process indefinitely, the creature is biologically immortal. Unless it gets eaten by a predator or destroyed by disease, it can theoretically live forever in our oceans.
