The Alaskan wood frog has one of the most unbelievable survival tricks in the animal kingdom. During the freezing North American winter, this tiny creature literally turns into ice. Its heart stops beating, its breathing ceases completely, and over sixty percent of its body freezes solid for up to seven months.
Most animals would die instantly if ice crystals formed inside their cells. However, the wood frog prepares its body by packing its blood with high concentrations of glucose and urea. These natural substances act like biological antifreeze, protecting the inside of the cells while water freezes in the surrounding body cavity.
When spring arrives and temperatures rise, the frog slowly thaws out from the inside out. Its heart magically restarts on its own, and within a few hours, the frog hops away as if nothing happened. Scientists study this incredible frog to improve human organ preservation and cryopreservation technology.
