00:00Ellis Robinson, nephew of the late A&R Robinson, told TV6 News the greatest legacy of his uncle
00:07is his role in the establishment of the International Criminal Court, ICC,
00:12and the government should explain why this country abstained from voting on Monday on the annual ICC report.
00:20It is a resolution the country has historically co-sponsored and supported since the court's inception.
00:27Right, they may have felt that they were probably forced to vote in the negative and not wanting to go
00:36that way.
00:36They decided, OK, look, the most appropriate stance for us would be to abstain.
00:42That's how I look at it.
00:44But, again, we need to get the reasons as to why that position was taken.
00:49Mr. Robinson, speaking with TV6 News at his Robinson Street Scarborough home,
00:56told the TV6 News the government may have been placed in a position to act the way it did.
01:02It seems to me, and I'm saying here, I have no information.
01:06I want to put that out there.
01:07I have no information, nothing on the inside, outside, sideways, or what have you.
01:12The fact that the government abstained, I would think that there is something that had put the government in a
01:21very, very difficult situation, right?
01:25So whatever that rationale would have been.
01:28Meantime, Philip Robinson, another nephew of the late A&R Robinson,
01:33told the TV6 News the ICC forms one element of the legacy of his late uncle.
01:39And in his opinion, there is need for political maturity in the matter.
01:44To focus on the International Criminal Court and refer to that as such a, the abstaining,
01:51the government abstaining in terms of the vote,
01:54to me it shows a level of political immaturity and, you know, hypocrisy.
02:02Because we only recognize, to me his name is only called,
02:05and especially of late, when there's some bacchanal,
02:08whether it's with the Tobago airport and his name is, is there emblazoned on the only building,
02:15or is there a bush in the graveyard and family had to go and cut the bush and that kind
02:19of thing.
02:20The ICC was established after A&R Robinson's 1989 address to the younger,
02:26proposing a permanent international court to confront drug trafficking,
02:31genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.
02:35Trinidad and Tobago was the third country to sign the ICC's founding treaty.
