00:17Former Paraguayan President Santiago Pena was transferred on Friday night
00:22to a military facility following unrest outside his home in Asuncion.
00:30In New Zealand, vote counting is still underway after the general election
00:35with the governing Central Right National Party and its main opposition,
00:39the Labour Party, battling for the victory with 97% of results tallied.
00:51Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:57We begin with the news, so stay with us.
01:21On Saturday, April 14th celebrated Holy Mass in Paysandu, Uruguay,
01:26in a new stop of his ongoing apostolic journey to South America.
01:29After boarding a Uruguayan Air Force plane in Montevideo, the Pope arrived in the border city of Paysandu,
01:37where he celebrated Mass for 50,000 faithful at the Paris Londres Municipal Park.
01:44The Mass was dedicated to Blessed Jacinto Vera, a 19th century priest who became Uruguay's first bishop.
01:52The leader of the Holy See will travel back to Montevideo, where he has a schedule of activities that include
01:59a visit to Casa Valle,
02:01a working-class neighbourhood located in the outskirts of the city.
02:05He will also meet with representatives from the education sector in the Catholic University of Uruguay,
02:12before leading a prayer vigil at the historic Centenario Stadium in the evening, with 60,000 people in attendance.
02:30Precisely, the pontiffs is a carol forms part of a historic tour of the region that began on Friday in
02:36the Uruguayan capital,
02:38in a country characterized by its strong secular tradition, but where thousands of faithful took to the streets to welcome
02:45him.
02:46Our colleague Mateo Guille was there and has the details.
02:51Pope Leon XIV landed in Montevideo and began his first tour of South America as Pope.
02:57Some faithful went to wait for him at the airport to welcome him to a country which, according to experts,
03:03is considered the most secular on the entire continent.
03:08I've come here to see the Pope because it's a very important event for the country,
03:12as it's been so many years since the Pope last visited, and this is going to be wonderful.
03:17I'd like to be here, at least to see the plane land. I don't know if I'll have the chance
03:21to see him,
03:22but at least I'd like to see him get off the plane and be happy here, waiting for the Pope's
03:26arrival.
03:28I came here, to the airport, to see the Pope because, well, to start with, I am Catholic,
03:33and I believe the Pope is a very important figure for both believers and non-believers.
03:37He is a symbol of peace, and well, he can bring some wonderful things to Uruguay.
03:44From the airport, the Pope traveled to Plaza Independencia, an iconic site in the Uruguayan capital,
03:49where thousands of the faithful were waiting to hear his message.
03:54The truth is that we were lucky enough to have been there when John Pope II visited many, many years
03:59ago,
03:59and now what we are hoping for is that it will be a celebration for the community,
04:03about all the Catholic community, but also for the Uruguayan people as a whole,
04:07for the whole country, because it's something good.
04:11We welcome him with great anticipation, especially because of the message the Pope may leave for us,
04:17on a continent that is in such turmoil, both politically and economically.
04:22He is, moreover, someone who knows our Latin America well, so we are very pleased to welcome him.
04:27The fact that he is beginning this tour in Uruguay is also something that is very significant for us,
04:33to share in the joy of our people, above all with those Catholic believers who come to see him,
04:38and non-Catholics, such as myself. I am not Catholic, but I believe it is important to pay attention to
04:44what a world leader for this calibre has to offer us.
04:50Then, in Plaza Independencia, in front of the authorities, León XIV delivered his first speech on Uruguayan soil.
04:57Looking towards the monument to Artigas, he recalled the Exodus of the people of the East,
05:02and quoting the national hero, he said one of his most famous quotes,
05:06My authority extends from you, and it ceases by your sovereign presence.
05:10From that historical context, he called for work towards solidarity, social commitment and shared effort,
05:16so that development may reach everyone.
05:23From this first meeting, I wish to extend my greetings to all Uruguayans, whatever they may be.
05:36Over the next few days, I shall have the opportunity to visit some places in this country,
05:42to learn more about his history, and to meet the men and women who, in their very diverse ways,
05:48form part of the life of this nation.
05:51In the square, a crowd celebrated the presence of the Supreme Pontiff with flags, banners and Catholic symbols,
05:58singing and applause accompanied each of his gestures.
06:01The day came to a close at the Metropolitan Cathedral.
06:04There, among bishops, priests, and members of religious orders, the Pope presided over the recitation of Vespers.
06:12While outside, another crowd listened to his reflections.
06:16The message is that we are a pilgrim church, or pilgrim peoples on earth,
06:24and that we must learn to live together peacefully, in a friendly manner.
06:31In fact, here in our region, that is how we live.
06:34But it is also a message never to stop looking out for the most vulnerable in society.
06:45The faithful waited outside Montevideo Cathedral until the Pope had left.
06:49The reunion between the head of the Catholic Church and the least Catholic country on the continent
06:55was filled with symbols and messages.
06:57On a continent in turmoil, with incidents of intolerance becoming even more frequent,
07:03the Pope's message offered hope that all is not yet lost.

07:45Welcome back to From the South.
07:47Former Paraguayan President Santiago Peña was transferred on Friday night
07:52to a military facility following unrest outside his home in Asuncion.
07:56The measure was taken to ensure his safety.
07:59The transfer took place amid protests by people demanding that the former president
08:04serve his sentence in a prison rather than at his home.
08:07During the clashes, some protesters threw objects at the convoy's vehicles,
08:11while police officers used rubber bullets to disperse the protests, according to local media.
08:18Peña was taken to the Presidential Guard Regiment, where he remains awaiting his preliminary hearing
08:24scheduled for this Saturday.
08:32In this context, the former director of the Central Bank of Paraguay, Carlos Carballo,
08:37was arrested on the evening of Friday, November 6, after voluntarily reporting to the Department of Investigations.
08:43Carballo is accused of allegedly using the bank to launder millions of dollars,
08:49derived from a fraud against the government.
08:52The case has caused a steer nationwide due to its possible links between the financial system
08:57and the irregular management of public funds.
09:00Now the investigation must clarify the origin of the funds, the transactions carried out,
09:06and the scope of the alleged liability.
09:17Brazilian President Lucina Salula da Silva congratulated Pedro Aliana on taking office as President of Paraguay.
09:23Through his official ex-account, the Brazilian President stated,
09:27I extend to the new President of Paraguay, Pedro Aliana, who was earning this evening my best wishes for every
09:34success in his new role,
09:36and look forward to working with him in an open, frank and cooperative manner to strengthen our bilateral relationship
09:44and advance integration in South America.
09:47I look forward to welcoming him soon in Brasilia, where he will be able to review our bilateral agenda
09:54and give renewed impetus to our historic ties of friendship.
10:06Following a period dominated by the cost-of-living crisis and an economy affected by the war in the Middle
10:11East,
10:12New Zealand went to the polls this Saturday for one of the closest elections in its history.
10:17In this context, with more than 97% of the votes counted,
10:22preliminary results produced no definitive victory for the right or the left,
10:27but the incumbent Conservative government has obtained a narrow majority that could allow it to return to power.
10:34The centre-right National Party and its minor party coalition partners,
10:39Libertarian Act and Populist New Zealand First could have bested the left-wing bloc
10:44led by the Labour Party and Chris Hipkins, which appeared to have fallen short of a majority.
10:51According to the Electoral Commission, final results are expected to be announced on November 27th.
11:06Precisely in this scenario, speaking to supporters in the capital, Wellington, New Zealand opposition leader Chris Hipkins,
11:14stressed the urgent need for political cooperation and emphasised that compromise will be essential for the country's political future.
11:22And tonight it's clear that we're not going to know the exact shape of our next government for a little
11:28while longer yet.
11:31But there are some things that are clear from tonight's results.
11:35Our next parliament is going to require all of us to compromise, to work together and to find common ground.
11:44In other topics, France saw a record-breaking protest against the high cost of living and social cuts.
11:49More than 1.6 million people flooded the streets of France in a massive general strike against inflation and for
11:56decent wage increases.
11:57The day of workers' dignity was violently suppressed by Emmanuel Macron's state forces, with 642 people arrested throughout the country.
12:08Furthermore, students claim that the precarious living conditions and the cost of housing are making their future unsustainable.
12:15In addition, citizens have called for a new general strike for this Saturday, November 7th.
12:33In Spain, the protest camp for the right to housing in Plaza Catalunya in Barcelona was the setting for the
12:39screening of the documentary
12:41The Battle of the Bridges by filmmaker and Venezuelan Consul General in Barcelona, Carlos Arspurua.
12:47After the film screening, attendees were able to watch a short film dedicated to housing policy in Venezuela,
12:54the central theme of the protest camp that has maintained a continuous presence in the central Barcelona square since late
13:02September.
13:02According to the event organizers, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN Habitat, has recognized the progress of the Great
13:12Venezuelan Housing Mission,
13:14an initiative that has exceeded the delivery of 5 million decent homes and constitutes an international benchmark in the field
13:23of housing and social equity.
13:24Furthermore, the event aimed to highlight that the defense of sovereignty and the right to decent housing are complementary causes
13:33in the face of models
13:34that prioritize the market over the fundamental rights of the people.

14:22Welcome back to From the South.
14:24Russian forces have conducted a massive precision strike targeting military industrial sites, power plants and key logistics infrastructure in Kiev.
14:32The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed targeted bombardments against two electrical power stations
14:39and manufacturing facilities supplying Ukrainian military industry across the Kiev and Sitomir regions, leaving at least five people injured.
14:50Moscow justified strikes against the North Bridge over the Dintpro River by alleging its active use for transporting heavy weaponry
14:59and military supplies causing major transit disruptions in the capital.
15:04The large scale aerial operation comes directly ahead of a scheduled bilateral peace negotiations mediated by the United States this
15:12Tuesday,
15:13following months of diplomatic stagnation.
15:22Also groups of precisely Russian forces have conducted a massive precision strike targeting military industrial sites, power plants and Kiev
15:34logistics infrastructure.
15:36The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed targeted bombardments against two electrical power stations and manufacturing facilities
15:45supplying Ukrainian military industry across the Kiev and Sitomir regions, leaving at least five people injured.
15:52Moscow justified strikes against the North Bridge over the Dintpro River by alleging its active use for transporting heavy weaponry
16:04and military supplies.
16:05Causing operations comes directly as well from bilateral peace negotiations mediated by the United States this Tuesday,
16:17following months of diplomatic stagnation.
16:34And we have last minute information from Uruguay as Pope Leo XIV is at this hour finishing his holy mass
16:44in the city of Paisandu,
16:45the city that welcomed him for the first month in his trip to Latin America.
16:52He is set as well to go to the airport and travel and flight back to the capital of Uruguay,
16:59Montevideo,
17:00where he is going to be facing a very busy agenda from visiting as well a working community.
17:07and also after that going to the Catholic University of Uruguay where he is set as well to address the
17:15students.
17:16So this is at this hour the departure of Pope Leo XIV from Paisandu, one of the most important cities
17:26of Uruguay,
17:28that is about a little over three hundred and seventy kilometers from the capital Montevideo,
17:34and also where he held a symbolic moment for Uruguayans and for all of those worshippers that were present to
17:44listen to his prayers,
17:45to this important mass, which is as well the most important ceremony of the Catholic Church,
17:51in which he addressed the crowd as a friend, speaking to a friend,
17:55and he also prized the presence of many faithful among the crowd,
18:01and also thanked and worshipped as well the respect with which we were seeing a tiny dog that ran as
18:13well to say goodbye from Pope Leo XIV.
18:15So this is the caravan that is taking Pope Leo XIV towards back to the airport and also after the
18:24celebration of this mass for 50,000 faithful at the Paris-Londres Municipal Park.
18:34The mass, it's important to say, was dedicated to Blessed Jacinto Vera, a 19th century priest who became Uruguay's first
18:42bishop.
18:42So we were seeing live images at this hour from Pope Leo XIV departing from Paisandu City,
18:50and he is set as well to go to the airport and travel back to Montevideo where he is going
18:54to fulfill a very busy agenda.
18:56We're going to keep updating you on this latest information.
18:59So now we go to other topics because groups of protesters storm a construction site for a new Microsoft data
19:05center in Amsterdam.
19:07The actions are part of Stop Dirty Data Centers, a campaign that, according to dozens of civil society and grassroots
19:15groups,
19:16will be joined by activists in 15 European countries including Ireland, Poland, Denmark, Finland, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, France and
19:26the United Kingdom.
19:28Pro-Palestinian activists also joined the protests in the Dutch capital.
19:33They are demanding a how-to construction and argue that the center will be used for AI warfare, data civilians
19:40and genocide.
19:41They are also calling for a moratorium on large scale data centers, developments due to their social and environmental impacts.
19:52This action is the latest development in a growing movement against data centers that is spreading throughout Europe.
20:08In other topics, a new wave of bomb threats targeting commercial aircraft disrupted air travel across Europe on Friday,
20:15prompting security inspections at airports in several countries including the Czech Republic, Italy, France and Portugal.
20:22In Prague, nine flights were targeted, four arriving and five departing.
20:28Police searches found no explosives and airport operations continue without major disruptions.
20:35Meanwhile, in Italy, a flight traveling from Prague to Rome was diverted to Venice after an anonymous threat was reported.
20:43Meanwhile, in France, four planes received threats while flying over the country,
20:48landing safely at Paris-Orly and Bordeaux airports before undergoing inspections.
20:55Portuguese authorities also reported a threat against a rain and air flight from Lisbon to Rome but no explosives were
21:04found.
21:05Investigations are underway across the affected countries to determine the origin of the threats
21:11and establish whether the incidents are connected.
21:23Friday's incidents are part of a broader series of bomb threats targeting commercial aviation across Europe in recent days,
21:31rising security concerns and triggering repeated airport inspections.
21:35On Thursday alone, more than 20 flights were affected by threats involving several countries including Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic,
21:44Bulgaria and Finland.
21:46The previous incidents were reported through different channels.
21:50Some airports and airlines received threatening emails while other aircraft were alerted while already in the air.
21:57A similar wave was reported on Tuesday when Poland, Spain, Bulgaria and Italy confirmed threats against seven passenger planes.
22:06Some flights were diverted while one airport was temporarily closed.
22:19While in Tokyo, Japanese citizens gathered to protest government attempts to bridge the country's long-standing three non-nuclear principles.
22:28The demonstrators rallied against reported plans to include nuclear exceptions in the upcoming national security strategy provision.
22:36Activists warned that introducing exceptions effectively dismantles Japan's post-war pacifist commitment never to possess, produce or introduce nuclear weapons
22:48into its territory.
22:49Protesters also condemned skyrocketing military expenditure, demanding that the government uphold anti-nuclear principles, reject Western-backed militarization and prioritize
23:01public welfare.
23:19And with this information we have come to the end of this news brief.
