00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studios.
00:33Noisy crowd in today.
00:34Welcome to the Countdown Studios.
00:36I don't know whether you saw the article that I spotted the other day
00:39about a statue in upper New York State.
00:45It was a statue of Lucille Ball,
00:48a great American actress, dead for some, well, many years now.
00:52She had a great, great show called I Love Lucy.
00:55Anyway, in her hometown, small town,
00:58and they decided to throw up a statue.
01:00And it was a horrible little statue,
01:02and everybody absolutely hated it, Rachel.
01:04And, in fact, there was a campaign to get this horrible thing removed
01:08and replaced with a new statue of Lucille Ball.
01:11And they had a campaign, and it was called
01:14We Love Lucy, Get Rid of This Awful Statue.
01:16It got me to think about statues.
01:18I once remember being in St Peter's in Rome,
01:22and there's the most beautiful, actually, in this case,
01:24is a very beautiful statue.
01:25And it's of the Virgin Mary,
01:29who is holding on her knees...
01:31Yes, I know this one.
01:32...the body of Christ.
01:34Yeah.
01:36Which is very beautiful.
01:36And I was with a woman,
01:38who happened to be, you know, a crowd of us,
01:40and there was a woman standing next to me.
01:42She said, yeah, great, great, great statue.
01:44But who is it?
01:47Which I thought was, you know, rather remarkable.
01:49I think that's the one with her legs are slightly open.
01:51It's supposed to symbolise giving birth and dying at the same time.
01:54I think someone destroyed a copy of it or something.
01:57No, they had a crack at that one.
01:59And it's now got a screen in front of it.
02:00That's why it's screened off.
02:01There we go.
02:02Now, then, Tom Stevens is back.
02:03Rachel, from Westgate-on-Sea.
02:06Third win.
02:07Well done.
02:08Brave stuff.
02:09You had a good weekend, I trust.
02:10Yes.
02:11Rested?
02:12Yeah.
02:12No clubbing or anything like that?
02:14Only a little bit.
02:15All right.
02:17You've got to have a little bit of clubbing.
02:18You're joined by Wayne Ashton,
02:21an employability coach from Royton near Oldham.
02:24Yeah.
02:24You appeared in Stars in Their Eyes.
02:26I did, yeah.
02:27Who were you performing as?
02:29I was David Gray.
02:31The singer?
02:31Yes.
02:32How did you get on?
02:33I didn't win my show, but, you know,
02:36it was a really enjoyable experience.
02:38It was hard work.
02:39It was lots and lots of fun.
02:42And it was just lovely to be out there on stage with lots of lights and, you know,
02:47big audience, et cetera.
02:48Because you come to a door.
02:50Yes.
02:50And the lights against you and so forth, and it's all drama.
02:54Yes.
02:54Pretty much.
02:55I was smoking everything, but we all loved it.
02:58We can't offer you the smoke, but give us a song later on, maybe.
03:01All right.
03:02Let's have a big round of applause, then, for Wayne and Tom Stevens.
03:09And those in the corner, after I trust a restful weekend,
03:13Susie Dent, and from BBC Breakfast, it's Louise Minchin.
03:16Welcome back.
03:17Lovely to be back.
03:18We are very rested.
03:19You are?
03:20Yes.
03:21You look rested.
03:22And you got away from all your animals, I trust.
03:24Nothing, no one, none of the animal family have escaped this weekend.
03:28Well, Tom.
03:29We'll hear more about them later on, perhaps.
03:31But now, Tom, it's letters time.
03:34Thanks.
03:35Afternoon, Rachel.
03:36Afternoon, Tom.

04:42Just a six.
04:43A six for Tom Wayne?
04:45A five.
04:45And a five?
04:47Moist.
04:47Moist.
04:48Yeah.
04:48Very good.
04:49And gilts.
04:51Gilts.
04:52Very good.
04:54Louise, Susie, moist, gilts?
04:56Gilts, absolutely fine.
04:57There is a verb.
04:59To guilt somebody into doing something, to guilt trip them into doing something, is absolutely fine.
05:04Ugliest?
05:05Yeah, very good.
05:08And an unlikely one, but it's quite a nice one.
05:11You can outsmile somebody else.
05:14Outsmile?
05:14Yes, you can.
05:15To surpass in smiling.
05:17Outsmiling?

05:50A vowel.
05:52O.
05:55And another consonant, please.
05:57And lastly, R.
05:59Stand by.
06:02To be forward with you.
06:30Yes, Wayne?

06:39Well done.
06:40And in the corner, anything else?
06:42I only got a six, a format.
06:44Format?
06:45Yeah.
06:46Uniform's excellent.
06:47And then there's Fumart as well.
06:50F-O-U-M-A-R-T.
06:52It's another term for the polecat, the weasel-like mammal.
06:56A Fumart.
06:57Seven points to Wayne.
06:58Well done.
06:59And it's Tom's numbers game now.
07:00Tom?
07:00One large and five small, please.
07:03Thanks, Tom.
07:03One from the top row.
07:04Five little ones.
07:06And the first numbers game of the week is seven, five, nine, three, eight, and 75.
07:14And the target?
07:16642.
07:17Six for two.
07:18Six for two.

07:506-4-2.
07:516-4-2 when?
07:52Yes, 6-4-4.
07:536-4-4. Let's start with Tom.
07:5775 times 8, 600.
07:59Yeah.
08:019 plus 5 is 14.
08:0414.
08:04And then times that by the 3.
08:0542. Perfect.
08:08Well done indeed. Well done.
08:12So now I need their 16 to 7
08:14as we turn to our first Tea Time teaser
08:16which is Cash Trio.
08:19And the clue.
08:19Can you be sure that these are actually baked?
08:22Can you be sure that these are actually baked?
08:42Welcome back.
08:43I left with a clue.
08:43So can you be sure that these are actually baked?
08:45And the answer is haricot.
08:47As in haricot ver?
08:49As in the beans.
08:51Yes, haricot beans.
08:52And apparently they're not always baked.
08:55They're usually stewed.
08:56So baked beans might now be a bit of a misnomer.
08:59I see what you mean.
09:00But we still love them.
09:01Indeed. Thank you.
09:0216 plays 7 and it's Wayne's letters game.

10:26Resonate.
10:27Oh, very good.
10:28Yep.
10:29Susie?
10:29Excellent.
10:29Yet another couple.
10:30Ancestor and carotene.
10:34Carotene being the...
10:36Being the compound that you will find in carrots.
10:38Of course, carrots, yeah.
10:43So, letters now for Tom.

11:55And a six. Your six?
11:56A brogue.
11:57A brogue and vigoured.
12:01What does Susie think about that?
12:05Er, not there, I'm afraid, Tom.
12:09You always take these risks, and sometimes they pay off,
12:11but not in this case, sorry.
12:13That's OK.
12:13There we are. What can we have?
12:15Louise, Susie?
12:16There is a seven to overbid to make a higher bid
12:20than a previous bid in an auction.
12:23That's different to outbid.
12:25It's very different to outbid, yes.
12:26OK, outbid is the one that wins, I guess.
12:28Yes, exactly.
12:29All right, 23 plays 20.
12:32Well done, Wayne, and now it's your numbers game.
12:34Hi, Rachel.
12:35Can I have one from the top and five from anywhere else?
12:37Thank you, Wayne.
12:38One large five little coming up for you.
12:40And these five small ones are one, ten, another ten,
12:44three, and six, and the big one, 50.
12:49And your target, 508.
12:51Five-oh-eight.
12:53Five-oh-eight.

13:26Thank you, Tom.
13:27508.
13:27All right, let's get this over with.
13:29Wayne?
13:29OK, 50 times by 10.
13:3150 by 10, 500.
13:33And then 6 plus 3 is 9 minus 1, 8.
13:36Yeah, simple this one.
13:37There you go, Tom.
13:38All right.
13:39Very good.
13:41And so, 33 plays 30 as we turn to Louise.
13:45And Louise, you've had a great time this year on Celebrity MasterChef.
13:52That must have been fun.
13:53But there was another occasion when the kitchen was less fun.
13:57My first foray into, I suppose, reality television and cooking went really badly wrong.
14:05I went to Hell's Kitchen some, I'm glad to say, few years ago.
14:09We were invited, my husband and myself, and we went thinking,
14:12that would be really interesting to see how it all works, and we'll just have dinner
14:16and go home and have a nice time.
14:19And it didn't work out like that at all.
14:20So we went there.
14:21It was Marco Pia White was running the kitchen.
14:24And my husband, he runs a gastropub, so he knows a little bit about cooking and how it
14:31should be.
14:31And I like eating.
14:33So they served us this asparagus, and it was honestly the most, I feel bad saying this
14:39even eight years on, the most disgusting thing I'd ever eaten in my life.
14:43And they came up to us and they said, so, you know, how would you rate the food?
14:46And we said, well, it really, it was really horrible.
14:50And they were quite upset, obviously.
14:52So they went back and they told Marco Pia White about this.
14:55And then they, then they're sort of, you know, we can sort of see there's a big discussion
14:58going on in the kitchen, at which point we got slightly nervous.
15:01And they came back and they said to us, okay, then, well, you've either got to apologise
15:04or you'll have to leave.
15:07And we sort of looked at each other.
15:10My husband then, I mean, much braver soul than I am, marched off to have a discussion
15:14with Marco Pia White over the past, which went badly.
15:18And we were chucked out.
15:20We were chucked out.
15:21Out onto the street.
15:22Onto the street.
15:23And the worst thing was that we'd gone there.
15:25We had no, we had no food in the kitchen at home.
15:28We got back home about 10.30 at night, absolutely starving, just going, oh my goodness, why,
15:34why did we do that?
15:35Anyway, we luckily, we both agreed that we were not going to apologise for saying, for
15:39telling the truth.
15:40I think you're very brave.
15:41It ended quite badly for us.
15:43You wouldn't want Marco Pia White roaring out of the kitchen with a carving knife, would
15:47you?
15:47Well, exactly.
15:48So we got out quite quickly.
15:50Well done.
15:50Well done.
15:53Well done, Louise.
15:5533 plays away.
15:57It's 30.
15:58Nothing in it so far.
15:59Tom, let us go.
16:00A consonant, please.
16:01Thank you, Tom.

16:20And a vowel.
16:22E.
16:24And a vowel.
16:27A.
16:29And a final consonant, please.
16:31And a final C.
16:33Stand by.
17:04Yes, Tom?
17:05Seven.
17:06A seven when?
17:07A six.
17:08And that six?
17:09A chaser.
17:10Chaser and?
17:11Roaches.
17:13Roaches.
17:14Roaches.
17:14Didn't see that one.
17:16Roaches.
17:17A roach.
17:18Short for cockroach.
17:18Yes.
17:19Roach.
17:21Nasty business, yeah.
17:23Any advances?
17:24Another seven.
17:26Rosacea.
17:27Which is when your face seems quite flushed.
17:30Yeah.
17:30Through enlarged blood vessels.
17:32That's rosacea.
17:34Suffering from rosacea.
17:3640 plays 30.
17:37Wayne?
17:38Can I have a consonant, please?

18:46Five, Tom.
18:47I'll stick with a six.
18:49Okay, Wayne.
18:50Later.
18:51Later and taller.
18:53And taller.
18:54Later and taller.
18:55Yes, absolutely fine.
18:57Did you have a seven?
18:58Uh, Talia.
19:00Oh, yes.
19:01I think you can be a Talia.
19:03Um, I hate to tell you, yes, you can be.
19:05But, anyway, six is good.
19:07Good enough.
19:07No worries there.
19:09Yeah.
19:09Talia.
19:09Now, Louise and Susie.
19:12We had some reality.
19:14Yes.
19:15Yes.
19:16Uh, and literal.
19:17It's another seven.
19:18Uh, and lately for six.
19:21All right.
19:21Forty-six to thirty then, and it's Tom's numbers game now.
19:24Tom, uh, one large five small, please.
19:27Thank you, Tom.
19:27One large five small.
19:28And hopefully something more interesting than the last one.
19:31These five small ones are three, ten, two, in the right way around.
19:37Four.
19:39Another four.
19:40And the big one, fifty.
19:42And the target, four hundred and seven.
19:44Four, zero, seven.
19:47Four, zero, seven.
20:17Yes, Tom.
20:18Four, zero, seven.
20:19Four, zero, seven, Wayne.
20:20Four, zero, seven.
20:21Thank you, Tom.
20:22Uh, four plus four.
20:25Four plus four is eight.
20:27Times 50.
20:28Four hundred.
20:29And ten minus three for the seven.
20:31Yep, not much more interesting this way.
20:32There we go.
20:33And Wayne.
20:33Yep, exactly the same, Mike.
20:35That's it.
20:36All right.
20:41So it's 56 to 40 as we turn to our second tea-time teaser, which is due a nice.
20:48And the clue, we are due a nice one here in the studio.
20:51Today's have been rather abysmal.
20:54We're due a nice one here in the studio.
20:56Today's have been rather abysmal.
21:14Welcome back.
21:15Welcome back.
21:15I left with a clue.
21:16We are due a nice one here in the studio.
21:19Today's have been rather abysmal.
21:21And the answer, gulp, is audience.
21:25Audience.
21:27That hasn't really been abysmal at all.
21:29There we go.
21:3056 to 40.
21:31Tom's in the lead.
21:32And it's Wayne's Letters game.

24:15A seven.
24:16A seven?
24:17A seven as well.
24:18Two sevens.
24:19Yes, Tom?
24:19Floater.
24:20A floater and Wayne?
24:22Floater.
24:23OK, can you just show each other your floaters?
24:26Very nice.
24:27There you go, well done.
24:28And over in the corner...
24:30We didn't have any of that round here.
24:33Susie?
24:34We had floriat, which is used before something to mean may it flourish.
24:39So floriat countdown, for example.
24:41At the beginning of the Ethan Boating song.
24:43Exactly, floriat, Latona.
24:45OK.
24:4569 to 53, Tom's in the lead at the moment.
24:49But now we turn to you, Susie, for your origins of words.
24:53Susie?
24:54Well, whenever I hear the word acronym,
24:56there's a little part of my brain that switches off
24:58because it's such a sort of horrible-sounding word,
25:01or at least a very boring-sounding word, I think.
25:04And actually is linked to other words from Greek, like acropolis,
25:08and it means the tip,
25:09because in the case of an acronym,
25:10you're taking the tip of each particular word to make a new one.
25:14So I thought I would just do a quick whiz around some words
25:18that you might not have known were acronyms to begin with,
25:20including one that surprised me at the end.
25:23First of all, base jumping.
25:25That's a sort of form of parachuting where you jump off fixed objects.
25:28That is an acronym of four fixtures that base jumpers are to leap from,
25:34if you like.
25:35Building, antenna, span, and earth.
25:41Gestapo, to be feared, obviously, during the Second World War,
25:44that was an acronym of Geheimstaatpolizei,
25:47which in German is the secret state of police.
25:50GIF, or JIF, if you want to pronounce it that way.
25:53I think the inventor of the JIF, or the person who coined the term,
25:57says it should be JIF, but in America, they spell it with a hard G.
26:01That is a graphics interchange format used everywhere today,
26:06I see particularly on social media, so lots of short tips,
26:10which are GIFs or JIFs.
26:11Scuba, self-contained underwater breathing apparatus,
26:15perhaps one of the best-known ones.
26:16Yes, RADAR is an acronym in the 1940s of radio detection and ranging.
26:22And this is the one that surprised me, the Pelican Crossing.
26:26Somebody said, this is what started it, really.
26:27Somebody said, why is it called a Pelican Crossing?
26:30Not quite a pure acronym, but it goes back to 1966,
26:35and it was taken from the initial letters of the formal title,
26:39which was Pedestrian Light Controlled Crossing,
26:43which I have to say, I never knew.
26:44And then there were other pedestrian crossings,
26:47which we don't really hear about these days,
26:48which were given bird names by analogy,
26:50and that was the Puffin Crossing and the Toucan Crossing,
26:52which I quite liked.
26:53But Pelican Crossing, yes, started off as a little bit of an acronym.
26:57How interesting.
26:58Of course, the...
27:00APPLAUSE
27:03The poles with the lights on top of them
27:08were called Horbelisha crossings.
27:11Yes, after Mr. Belisha.
27:12After Mr. Horbelisha, yes.
27:14Yes.
27:15Yeah.
27:15Exactly.
27:17I wonder what happened to him.
27:1869 to 53, Tom's in the lead.
27:21Wayne, letters game.
27:22A consonant, please, Rachel.
27:24Thank you, Wayne.
27:25S.
27:26And another one, please.
27:28D.
27:29And a vowel.
27:29I.
27:32And another vowel.
27:34U.
27:35And a consonant.
27:37S.
27:38And another.
27:39P.
27:41And another vowel.
27:44A.
27:45And another one.
27:48O.
27:49And a final consonant, please.
27:51And a final D.
27:53Stand by.
27:55And ather.
27:56A.
27:57And a alphabet.

28:22Chang.
28:23And a Mercedes.
28:24Yes, Wayne.
28:27Risky six.
28:29What about Tom?
28:30Just a five.
28:31Your five?
28:32Spuds.
28:33Spuds, you like, yeah.
28:35Now, Wayne.
28:36I don't know.
28:37I'm not sure of it, but there'd been a five.
28:39Opiades, I don't know.
28:41What do you make of that, Susie?
28:43Opiades.
28:44No opiades, I'm afraid.
28:46Opiates, but no opiades.
28:47Sorry, Wayne.
28:48All right.
28:48What can we have?
28:49Louise?
28:50I don't know about this one,
28:51but you were talking about acronyms, weren't you?
28:52Yeah.
28:53And spads, which are signals passed at danger on railways.
28:58But I don't...
28:59We're not allowed abbreviations in acronyms, sadly,
29:01having just talked about them.
29:02Is that something in my head?
29:03Sorry.
29:03Spads.
29:04But, yeah, it's a good acronym.
29:05Anything else?
29:08Sadoes are there.
29:09I know you don't like that one much,
29:11but, yeah, sadoes would give you six.
29:12Sadoes is an unfortunate term.
29:15Not very nice name.
29:15Such a sado.
29:1774 to 53, and it's Tom's final letters game.
29:21Go, Tom.
