00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio on the 30th anniversary of one of those great soaps, an Australian
00:37soap, none other than Neighbours.
00:38And of course Neighbours, running for 30 years, but it produced some real great worldwide stars.
00:43How about Kylie Minogue? Neighbours. What about Jason Donovan? Neighbours. And even Russell Crowe? Neighbours.
00:51But I'm not a soap fan, Rachel. I don't know about you, but I do love some of these great
00:55American shows and indeed European shows. I love the box sets.
00:59Yeah. I'm straight into Narcos. I love it. Breaking Bad, I adore. And I know it's not from overseas, but
01:06In the Thick of It was great.
01:07Now, what about you? Are you a soap addict?
01:09I'm with you. I'm with the box sets. I'm working my way through The Good Wife for the second time
01:14at the moment.
01:14Because I watched it all myself and then I got Susie into it and then I've gradually got different friends
01:18into it. Now I've got the boyfriend into it, so I get to watch the whole thing again.
01:21What about all these Norwegian, Scanwegian jobs, the bridge and all that sort of stuff?
01:26Borgen. Fantastic.
01:27Yeah, that's great.
01:28Really, really good.
01:28Do you know what I love? There's a show called Countdown. It's really good.
01:31That's good. There's a lot of drama.
01:33A lot of drama in that. High drama.
01:35Brilliant. All right. Now, who's here? Mick Grawick is back. Well done, Mick. You came back very strongly.
01:40The first win yesterday, but wow, you brought in a killer blow, a nine-letter word. I think it was
01:46notarised.
01:47And that did for your poor contestant, actually. Welcome back.
01:52Thank you, Nick.
01:53Welcome back. Now, you're joined today by Michael Turner, a retired local government officer from Scarborough.
02:00Loves his Crown Green Bowling, Music and Heritage Railways.
02:04But Scarborough, I only went once. That was the most charming seaside town. Lovely.
02:10It is, yes. We're noted for the only professional seaside orchestra left in the country.
02:16That's fantastic. Now, you're also an RNLI volunteer. And because of that, you went off down to the Mall for
02:24the Queen's birthday celebration party.
02:26Yes.
02:27God, that was a treat.
02:28It was marvellous, yeah.
02:29You sat in the Mall.
02:30Yeah, ate the sandwiches, got a lovely hamper.
02:32Lovely.
02:33Yeah.
02:33Big event.
02:34It was.
02:34Big event. God bless her.
02:35Now then, let's have a big round of applause for Michael and Mick.
02:42Michael and Mick, indeed. And over in the corner, Susie. And it's award-winning comedian and writer, the great, yes,
02:51the great Joe Lycett. Welcome back, Joe.
02:55Nice.
02:57I'm having so much fun this week. It's really fun, this show.
03:01It's a bit of fun surprise.
03:04Well, I didn't mean there to be. I was expecting it to be fun, and it's been fun.
03:09Excellent. All right, there we are. Well done, Joe. Now then, Mick Grawick, let's have a letters game out of

04:49You're looking just full of regality there, Joe.
04:53Thanks, Nick.
04:53As is Susie.

11:50There we go.
11:51Any more rations?
11:53There is an eight, which Susie found in Tarsia.
11:58Do you know what?
11:59Never heard it.
11:59Don't know what it means.
12:01Well, it's a slightly exotic term for a method of knitting, and it's knitting with a number
12:06of colours.
12:07So, use different colours, coloured yarns.
12:10Possibly before then, it was an elaborate form of marquetry, so using sort of inlaid materials
12:15to decorate furniture.
12:16Yeah.
12:17Again, in different colours.
12:19It's not something I'm likely to run into.
12:21Joe, you're not a knitter, are you?
12:22I think I'd be more into it if it was called Intarsia-ing.
12:26Yes.
12:26I'm just going to have to go and do some Intarsia.
12:28Sounds really cool, doesn't it?
12:29In a knitting.
12:30It's very hip in Germany, knitting.
12:32Is it hip in Germany?
12:33Yeah.
12:33Is it really?
12:35Doesn't say good.
12:36Now then, 30 plays 20, and it's Michael's numbers game.
12:40One large and five small, please.
12:42Thank you, Michael.
12:43One from the top row, and five from the bottom ones.
12:46And these five little ones are eight, three, ten, five, and one.
12:52And the big one, 75.
12:55And the target, 894.
12:578, 9, 4.
13:298, 9, 3.
13:308, 100, and 95.
13:34One away.
13:34How about Mick?
13:358, 9, 3.
13:368, 9, 3.
13:38Now then, Michael, let's start with you.
13:398, plus 3, plus 1, is 12, times 75.
13:45900.
13:46And take away the 5.
13:48Yep, one away.
13:48Lovely.
13:49And Mick?
13:50I've done 5, minus 3 is 2, plus 10.
13:544, you're 12.
13:55Times 75.
13:56900 again.
13:57And then 8, minus 1.
13:59And you haven't used any of those.
14:00Yep.
14:01One the other way.
14:02Well done.
14:02All right.
14:03Either side.
14:03But in the middle, we find 8, 9, 4.
14:05Rachel.
14:06Yes.
14:07If you say, 5 minus 1 is 4.
14:09Times 75 is 300.
14:1310 minus 8 is 2.
14:16Take that away for 298.
14:18And times it by 3.
14:20Fantastic.
14:20Well done.
14:22Thank you very much.
14:24So, 10 points in it.
14:2537 to Michael's 27.
14:28As we turn to Joe.
14:29Now, what mischief have you got for us today?
14:32I got kicked out of a casino in London a while back for reasons that we won't go into.
14:39So, I thought I'd complain to them, but under the guise of an alias called Paul Wembridge that I invented.
14:45So, I'll read you the email I sent to them.
14:48I wrote,
14:48To the manager, I recently visited your casino and found it to be a shoddy establishment.
14:53What's more, my wife was left in the cold as she was deemed unfit for your premises and I was
14:58robbed by the house.
14:59I was and am so furious about my treatment in your casino that I'm considering spending some of my considerable
15:04wealth on annoying you.
15:06I find wealth to be unappealing and I'm a petty man with a lot of spare time.
15:10So, think, rather than waste my money in your casino, feel that wasting it irritating your casino may be preferable.
15:15Here are some ways I may annoy you.
15:17One, employ hundreds of dwarves to stand outside your doors shouting,
15:22We used to be tall before we gambled in this casino.
15:27Two, release a van full of cats with gastroenteritis induced diarrhoea onto your doorstep.
15:34Three, purchase neighbouring properties and turn them into casinos where the house always loses.
15:39Four, employ undercover people to enter your casino and release swarms of locusts at regular intervals.
15:45Five, bribe government officials to persuade them to change gambling laws that will put you and your horror premises out
15:50of business.
15:50I should make it clear that I'm not threatening to do this.
15:53I'm just making it clear that should I wish I could do this, an apology from you may rectify the
15:56matter completely.
15:57Regards, Paul Wembridge.
15:58I then received a reply from the PR manager at the casino.
16:02Dear Sir, thank you for your letter concerning your experiences at the casino.
16:06We've only been open nine months and whilst already the busiest and most popular casino in the country,
16:10we appreciate any feedback, good or bad, recognising there are bound to be areas that we can improve on.
16:15You say your wife was left out in the cold when you visited.
16:17Our sincere apologies for this.
16:19We'll immediately look to create a suitable refuge outside the casino for your wife on your next visit.
16:24With regards to the numerous punishments you've lined up for us and the use of your enormous wealth to carry
16:28them out.
16:29But the dwarves, perhaps a little bad taste given the history of dwarves in the building.
16:33As you know, when the casino opened over a hundred years ago, it was an indoor circus with a large
16:38water tank in the middle of the ground floors.
16:40They had shows with elephants swimming in the tank and other shows with dwarves high diving from the minstrels gallery
16:4660 foot above the water tank.
16:48All went well until they tried to combine the shows and the rest is history, certainly for two of the
16:53dwarves anyway.
16:53I've since researched that and that's absolutely true.
16:55But in any case, if you get an army of dwarves, we'd have no choice but to get our own
16:59army of dwarves to combat them and we could have a small battle in the street.
17:04The cats, please don't, we've only just got rid of the last lot.
17:09So, in short, we would dread to think of you carrying out any of your ingenious plots.
17:12So naturally, unreservedly apologise for any offence caused, knowingly or unknowingly.
17:16Please do introduce yourself on your next visit.
17:18We'll make sure you are well looked after and we'll happily buy you a drink for the pleasure you've given
17:21us.
17:21Yours sincerely, Paul.
17:22And I've been there, met Paul.
17:23Nice guy.
17:24Well done.
17:25Good for you.
17:26That's funny.
17:28I love it when people get back in touch and claim it my own game.
17:32All right, 37 to 27, ten points in it and it's Mick's letters game.

25:43Smudges?
25:44And the same word.
25:45Two smudges.
25:46Show your smudges to Mick.
25:47There we go.
25:49All right.
25:50Thank you, Michael.
25:51Joe?
25:52Just one of the seven that we found diffuses.
25:5658 plays Mick 66.
25:59Susie, teach us with your wonderful origins of words.
26:03I thought I'd look at words that had come into English via game playing.
26:07Because it turns out that fun and games are behind quite a lot of words that have come into the
26:11language.
26:12I'm going to start with hazard.
26:14Now, hazard was originally a gambling game.
26:16It was played with two dice or die.
26:18And the rules were very, very difficult to remember.
26:21And so somebody was in a sort of perilous position, if you like, in the game the entire time.
26:26They were in hazard.
26:27And that came into English and has remained there to this day.
26:31But one of my favorites is rigmarole.
26:33Now, the rigmarole goes back to a game called Ragman's Roll.
26:38Now, it was a medieval game.
26:41And who Ragman was, it was actually pronounced Ragaman originally.
26:45We're not sure.
26:46But the ragger bit may be a nickname for the devil, which is behind Ragamuffin as well.
26:52Somebody who was sort of orphaned on the street, if you like, and hadn't been treated particularly well.
26:57But back to this ragman roll game, scrolls, bearing descriptions of different personalities, which will be very complicated and very
27:06embellished,
27:06would be given to each player haphazardly.
27:09And then each player would read out the description that supposedly applied to themselves.
27:13And much hilarity, apparently, ensued.
27:16I've never actually seen the scrolls, but it was a very popular game.
27:19And after that, ragman roll came to be applied to statutes that moved from games to actually law.
27:26And at the end of the 13th century, statutes, legal statutes, were written in scrolls, which were tightly bound,
27:33which obviously reminded people of this game involving scrolls.
27:35And so these statutes came to be known as ragman rolls.
27:39And because statutes, as we know, can be long, tedious, etc.,
27:43ragman roll took on the sense of a rigmarole, a long, fussy and complicated procedure that we know today.
27:49But, yeah, it all goes back to a Christmas party game.
27:51Well, that's good.
27:53Rigmarole.
27:55Very good.
27:5866 to 58.
27:59And it's Michael's letters game now.
