00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:34On the day 40 years ago, way back in 1976,
00:37that Her Majesty the Queen opened the National Theatre on the South Bank.
00:42And, of course, it's an extraordinary thing,
00:44a rather brutal building, but puts on the most wonderful events.
00:48I was thinking live theatre is great, great.
00:52And whenever Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman,
00:56which I think is just a wonderful show, is on, I go and see it.
00:59So, do you have a particular play that you go and see whenever it's on?
01:03Well, I went for the first time, I was in Italy this summer,
01:06we went to the opera, we saw Madame Butterfly there.
01:09Lovely.
01:09And, obviously, you're in Italy, it's in Italian, which I don't speak,
01:13so you can't really tell what's going on.
01:14But I realised that Madame Butterfly is Miss Saigon, which I've seen.
01:18Yeah.
01:18And we went to see La Traviata, which I didn't realise was pretty woman.
01:22So I was all over this story.
01:24I don't think it matters that you can't understand every word at all.
01:28As long as you know the story, you can kind of feel it.
01:31All right.
01:31Now, who have we got with us?
01:32We've got Elish Mysteries back, Strategic Finance Minister from Leicester.
01:36Two good wins.
01:37I think 102, and yesterday, of course, a one-point win.
01:41Well done.
01:41All right.
01:42You're joined, Elish, by Daniel Clarkson from Coventry.
01:45Welcome, Daniel.
01:47You're a social club steward, and you're a big quiz fan.
01:50You watch them all, apparently.
01:51Well, as many as I can.
01:52I'm now going to ask you a very difficult question.
01:55Which is your favourite quiz show?
01:56I'd have to say Countdown.
01:58You would, indeed.
01:59Otherwise, you're going to have a very rough time.
02:01Well done.
02:02And your favourite destination is?
02:04I really loved the holiday I had in Australia.
02:07Do you travel around?
02:08We hired a camper van, and we travelled from Perth up to a place called Shark Bay.
02:13And it was amazing around there.
02:15Yeah.
02:15Brilliant.
02:16Let's have a big round of applause, then, for Daniel and Elish.
02:20APPLAUSE
02:23And please welcome to Dictionary Corner, of course, Susie Dent.
02:27And not only has he just got a new book published, past it was buttered, but he's also got a
02:33DVD out next month.
02:34It's Joe Lycett and his Joe Lycett Live.
02:38That's the name of your DVD.
02:40Well, it's actually called That's the Way, Aha, Aha, Joe Lycett.
02:44Oh, is that right?
02:45Speaking of theatre, I used to work in a theatre just down the road from here, the Palace Theatre in
02:49Manchester.
02:50Yes.
02:50I used to sell ice creams for her, and you would not believe how many people don't know the spoon's
02:55in the lid.
02:57It's in the lid.
02:58They come back and ask for the spoon, yeah?
03:01Yeah.
03:02All right.
03:03Joe, we shall hear more from you later, but now, Elish, we're off, and it's a letters game.

06:58Simples.
06:58Simples?
06:59Yes.
06:59I'm not sure how long it's been in.
07:01Not too long, I think.
07:02But obviously, it comes to me ad campaign.
07:03So it just shows you how advertising can actually penetrate the language.
07:06I'm going to get an ad campaign with furp.

12:52If a building has lots of statues,
12:54it is described as a statute.

14:12and it's Joe Lysip.
14:14What have you got for it?
14:15I found a flyer for a clairvoyant,
14:19and it's said on the flyer that the first reading is free
14:22over SMS text message, so I thought, let's have a go.
14:27So I'll read you what I wrote to this clairvoyant.
14:30Hello, I'm trying to contact someone.
14:32Can you help?
14:33I got a reply.
14:34Yes, first reading is free.
14:36What is your name, and who are you trying to contact?
14:39I said, my name is Joe, and I'm trying to contact my mother, Helen.
14:42My mother, Helen, is alive and well.
14:44They replied, do you have anything of hers to hand?
14:46I said, yes, I have a scarf.
14:48She said, OK, hold the scarf in your hand.
14:50Text me the first three words that come to mind.
14:52It can be anything.
14:53Don't try and edit yourself.
14:54So I replied, Ford Focus, casserole, abusive.
15:02Reply, I got, OK, I'm getting something.
15:04It's something to do with glasses.
15:05Does that make sense?
15:06I didn't want to give too much away, so I said, yes.
15:08She replied, she's got a problem with the glasses.
15:10She's saying she's sorry.
15:12I said, OK, what about?
15:13She said, she's just saying there's so much.
15:15Sorry about the mess.
15:17And I said, OK, that's fine.
15:18Does she say where she is?
15:19She says, I'm not sure, but she's happy where she is.
15:21She's smiling.
15:22I said, oh, well, that's good for her.
15:24Does she know when she's going to be back?
15:26She said, I'm losing contact.
15:27She says she'll see you soon, and then she'll make it up to you about the glass.
15:31So I said, oh, I see.
15:32She's saying for me to smash the glass.
15:34She replied, I'm not sure.
15:35I've lost contact.
15:36I said, OK, I'm going to smash the glass.
15:38She replied, what glass?
15:39I don't think she wants you to put yourself in danger.
15:41I thought, well, I'm outside the house without my keys.
15:43I'm going to have to get in somehow.
15:45Then I got a reply, which is three question marks.
15:47And then I thought, oh, she just got back.
15:49It's OK.
15:50And she replied, she just got back.
15:51Is she even in the spirit world?
15:52I said, what?
15:53No, of course not.
15:54She went to the garden centre.
15:56She thought, please don't contact me again.
15:58I said, OK, sure.
16:00Everything you said was true, though.
16:01She was happy.

19:33What might it be, Susie?
19:35Er, that's Q-U-A-T-E-R-N-S.
19:36They are choirs of paper, or a pamphlet or a small book,
19:40and a choir is four pages folded together to make eight leaves.
19:45So you've got the four in there for the quatern.

23:15Er, um, it is a valid word, but only in North American English.
23:21Um, so it's the American version of our M-O-U-L-D-E-R.
23:25I'm sorry.
23:26Bad luck.
23:28Gives Daniel a seven-point lead now.
23:30Put it over in the corner.
23:32Er, there's a seven someday, er, and there's an eight, which is earldoms.
23:39Earldoms.
23:39So, there's a plural of an earldom.
23:42Yes.
23:44A belted earldom.
23:45The rain, or the, um, the terrain, if you like, of an earld.
23:49Yeah, an earldom.
23:50All right.
23:51So, 57 plays 50, and it's Elish's letters game.
23:55Elish?
23:56A consonant, please.
23:57Thank you, Elish.

24:30N.

24:33Countdown.
24:34Er, I'll try one more consonant, please.
24:35Er, I'll try one more consonant, please.

24:59Er, I'll try one more consonant, please.
25:03Elish?
25:04Just a six.
25:05A six.
25:06And Daniel?
25:07A six.
25:08Elish?
25:09Coated.
25:11Daniel?
25:11And danced.
25:13And danced.
25:14Yes, it's not too easy, this one.
25:17Did we produce anything there, Joe?
25:18It was a seven, wasn't there?
25:20There's donated.
25:22Very good.
25:23Yes.
25:23That'll do nicely.
25:25Yes.
25:25Donated.
25:26Well done.
25:2663 plays 56.
25:28As we turn to Susie to teach us something new.
25:33Susie?
25:34I was going to talk a little bit about euphemisms today,
25:37or unpleasant truths wearing diplomatic cologne,
25:40as Quentin Crisp once called them.
25:42If there's one subject that we're consistently slightly squeamish about,
25:45that's going to the loo.
25:47The loo itself being a euphemism.
25:50And toilet's actually also a euphemism,
25:52because it began as toile cloth.
25:54So it was originally a cloth covering for a dressing table
25:57where a woman particularly would go to get dressed,
26:00to wash, et cetera, and prepare herself for the day.
26:03I'll tread carefully here,
26:04but I thought I would have a very, very quick trip around
26:07some of the euphemisms through the ages for the loo,
26:09because they're quite lovely, some of them.
26:11So the biblical one, covering his feet,
26:15that was one of the earliest euphemisms that you can find.
26:18If you jump forward to the 17th and 18th centuries,
26:21you might be visiting the commons,
26:23or you could tell your friends you were going to the Spice Islands.
26:27That was another one.
26:28You can find an entire timeline for what were euphemistically known
26:32as the toilet acts.
26:34As I say, I'll tread carefully here,
26:35but people would often call the loo the thinking room,
26:38so they would call it the frontistry,
26:40which was a very old word for a place where you did meditating
26:43and contemplating.
26:45You might use the thunder jug,
26:47that's a bit closer to home.
26:50The thunder jug?
26:51The thunder jug.
26:52I'm writing that down.
26:54But one of the best has to be visiting the doughnut
26:57in Granny's greenhouse,
26:59which was a sketch from,
27:01you remember the Monty Python team,
27:03and it featured a very embarrassed man in dire need,
27:05but he could not bring himself to say the word toilet,
27:08and even today it's still a word that people often skirt around.
27:12But I'll leave it at that almost.
27:13Bumpf.
27:14If we talk about the bumpf that we get through the post,
27:16all the sort of spam mail, etc., that we don't want,
27:18that actually goes back to bumfodder,
27:20and that was originally a euphemism for toilet paper.
27:24Well, I'm done.
27:25Thank you very much.
27:2963, please.
27:3056, and it's Daniel's letters game.
27:32Daniel.
27:34I'll start with a consonant, please, Rachel.
27:36Thank you, Daniel.

28:39Daniel.
28:40Seven.
28:41Elesh.
28:42Eight.
28:43Right.
28:44Daniel.
28:45Lonez with the A.
28:48Lonez and personal.
28:50And personal.
28:51Yeah, thank you.
28:56Oh, it's getting hot here.
28:58One point ahead now for Elesh.
29:0064 to Daniel.
29:0263.
29:03But in the corner.
29:04Now then.
29:05Joe.
29:06There's no more than eights.
29:08Just overlaps.
29:10That's another eight.
29:11Susie, that's it.
29:13Overspan.
29:13Another eight for you.
29:14Overspan.
29:15All right.
29:16So, final letters game for you, Elesh.
29:20Consonant, please.
29:21Thank you, Elesh.
29:23C.
29:24And another.
29:26T.
29:27A vowel, please.
29:29I.
29:31And second.
29:34O.
29:35Consonant.
29:37W.
29:38And another.
29:40D.
29:41A vowel, please.
29:44E.
29:45A consonant.
29:48N.
29:50And a final vowel, please.
29:55And a final I.
29:57Stand by.
29:59A vowel, please.
30:00A vowel, please.
30:29Elish?
30:29Seven.
30:31Daniel?
30:32Six.
30:33That's six.
30:34Winst.
30:35Winst and?
30:37Edition.
30:38Edition.
30:39Very good, yes.
30:41Well done, Elish.
30:43Just looking at what, I mean, how do you even say that?
30:45I think it's a silent C.
30:49It's C-T-E-N-O-I-D.
30:52Very strange looking term.
30:54And it's describing, in zoology, fish scales that have many tiny projections on them, like the teeth of a comb.
31:01Tenoid.
31:01Letters all over the place there.
31:03Tenoid.
31:04There's a couple of other sevens as well.
31:06Noticed and diction.
31:08Yeah.
31:08Well done.
31:09All right.
31:09So, 63 to Elish's 71 as we go into the final numbers game.
31:14Daniel?
31:15One large, please, and five small.
31:18Thank you, Daniel.
31:18One large, five small, and hopefully a crucial conundrum coming up.
31:22The final numbers game of the day is two, nine, seven, one, ten, and the big one, 75.
31:31And your target, 958 again.
31:34Nine, five, eight.
31:35One large, four, five, six, seven, nine, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten.
32:05Daniel.
32:07I've lost it.
32:09How about Elish?
32:109.57.
32:119.57, not bad.
32:13One away.
32:1410 plus 2.
32:1610 plus 2 is 12.
32:18Times 75 for 900.
32:19Times 75 is 900.
32:219 times 7 is 56.
32:249 is 63.
32:25That's 56.
32:279 times 7 is 66.
32:29Oh, sorry, it's not, isn't it?
32:30It's, yeah, sorry.
32:32No, I've lost that.
32:33Now, Rachel, down to you.
32:359.58.
32:37Yes, this one I can find.
32:38If you say 75 times 7 is 525,
32:43minus 1, 524,
32:46times by 2 is 1,048,
32:51and then you've got 9 times 10 for 90
32:55to take away for 9, 5, 8.
32:57Well done.
32:58Well done indeed.
33:00Thanks, Rachel.
33:02Which means you were staring into the throat
33:07of a crucial conundrum, chap.
33:09It's fingers on buzzers.
33:10Let's reveal that crucial countdown conundrum.
33:20Daniel.
33:22Is it furthered?
33:23Let's see.
33:24Furthered.
33:24And I can see Ellis nodding his head there.
33:27Furthered.
33:29Furthered.
33:30Oh.
33:31Look at that.
33:37Well done, Daniel Clarkson.
33:39Well done.
33:40Well done.
33:41Elesh, bad luck.
33:42Yeah, that number's...
33:44Yeah, that did it for you.
33:46Well, bad luck.
33:47But listen, you go home, back to London,
33:49with your goodie bag and a teapot.
33:51Not everybody can say that.
33:53Well done.
33:54Well done.
33:54And your dad got a mug the other day
33:57for getting a conundrum on your first outing, I think.
34:00Yes.
34:00Brilliant.
34:00Thanks for coming.
34:02And Daniel, brilliant stuff.
34:03Well done.
34:04Because he's a good player.
34:05Yes.
34:05Well done.
34:06We'll see you tomorrow.
34:07We look forward to that.
34:08All right.
34:09And we shall see you both tomorrow, Joe and Susie.
34:12Yeah, looking forward to it.
34:13More fun from Joe?
34:14No, no fun tomorrow.
34:16Yeah, you've got some good words there.
34:17You've got a nine.
34:18I want a teapot.
34:20One day, perhaps.
34:22Thank you very much, Rachel, as ever.
34:25See you tomorrow.
34:25See you tomorrow.
34:26See you tomorrow.
34:26Same time, same place.
