00:03Hello, join us. We go live at this hour to Florida, Uruguay, to the Cathedral of the Basilica of Florida,
00:11as the Pope is at this moment holding the Mass, Holy Mass, for the people of Uruguay, the second and
00:23last Mass that he is going to hold in this Latin American country.
00:28The second one to hold as well in this 12-day journey, speaking to pilgrims at this hour that are
00:37receiving him dressed in white and yellow as a respectful way of receiving the blessings and the spiritual moment that
00:50is being led by Pope Leo XIV. Let's listen to his address at this hour.
00:56At some time, generations have come and gone. Circumstances have changed, including the relationship of many Uruguayans to the faith.
01:06Yet she has remained here.
01:11While Mary accompanied the history of these people, at the same time, in so many homes, other women preserved the
01:18faith and passed it on to their children.
01:23I think of the mothers who placed the first words of prayer on their children's lips, who took them to
01:30be baptized, who prepared them to receive the sacraments and taught them to live out Christian charity.
01:41I think of the grandmothers who kept an altar at home, who prayed for the living and the deceased, and
01:48who made God present in the ordinary events of life.
01:57Even in the early days of the church, we find something similar.
02:02Timothy's faith was rooted in two women, with the apostle fondly recalling Timothy's grandmother, Lois, and his mother, Eunice.
02:14In them, sincere faith had first taken root, which Paul also recognized in Timothy.
02:23That's Timothy verses 1 to 5.
02:32We know, however, that Timothy, who would become a close collaborator of St. Paul, was formed by that faith learned
02:41at home.
02:45This land also has women's names inscribed in its history of faith.
02:52Among them is St. Maria Francesca Rubato, who chose to remain among you and serve those most in need here.
03:11There are also the blessed martyrs, Dolores and Consuelo Aguiramella, two sisters born in Montevideo.
03:22Their lives were very different, but in all three we find supreme examples of faithfulness.
03:36Yet most of this history of faith in the country was never written down in books.
03:42It was quietly passed down from generation to generation within families.
03:48When we wonder and ask where our faith comes from, the name of a specific woman often comes to mind.
03:56A mother, a grandmother, a godmother, a religious sister or a catechist.
04:03We may not remember every word they said to us, but we do remember how they prayed, how they spoke
04:11of the Lord,
04:12and with what conviction they lived out what they taught us.
04:19Today I would like to thank all of those women.
04:27Thank you for having believed and for having kept open a path to God in so many families.
04:41Some were able to do so, supported by a long-standing family tradition.
04:46Others had to sustain that faith with greater effort, perhaps without always finding understanding or support within their own homes.
05:01I know that many of you carry a very specific sorrow.
05:05You taught your children to pray, and today they no longer do so.
05:09You used to attend Mass together, and it has been years since they entered the church.
05:16You spoke to your grandchildren about God, and now you do not know if those words left a mark.
05:27Sometimes you wonder if you did something wrong, or if it was all futile.
05:36Allow me to recall Saint Monica here, who knew that pain well.
05:45She prayed for years for a son who seemed to be drifting further and further from God, but she never
05:52stopped trusting in His grace.
05:56Therefore, do not consider what you have sown to be lost.
06:00The Lord Himself taught us that the seed can grow without the sower knowing how.
06:23Mothers and grandmothers, never tire of passing on the faith.
06:27Preach with your lives as well as with your words.
06:31Insist on prayer, love, and hope.
06:34Insist on them in season and out of season.
06:38Do so with patience, without harshness or discouragement.
06:43Even if your loved ones seem far from God, continue to place them before Him.
06:50Do not stop blessing them, accompanying them, and simply reminding them of what they once received.
06:58There are doors that you cannot open, but God can.
07:19I would also like to address the men, fathers and grandfathers.
07:25Your children and grandchildren need to see that the faith occupies a genuine place in the lives of the men
07:32in your family.
07:34Imitate St. Joseph, who took on the task of raising Jesus, bringing Him to the temple, teaching Him to work
07:42honestly, and showing Him that God must come first in a person's life.
07:54Dear fathers and grandfathers, young people need to see that you pray, receive the sacraments, treat your wives with respect.
08:03Ask for forgiveness, ask for forgiveness, and live with integrity, even when doing so requires sacrifice.
08:17Children learn a great deal by seeing that their fathers can kneel before God without feeling that He is any
08:25less of a man for doing so.
08:37Scripture called on God's people to keep the words they have received from Him in their hearts and to teach
08:44them to their children,
08:45to speak of them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when
08:52you rise.
08:55God was central.
08:56Pablo XIV is at this moment leading the Holy Mass in the front of the square of the Cathedral Basilica
09:06of Florida for the National Shrine of Our Lady of the 33.
09:11In the homily of the Holy Father, Pablo XIV has addressed to mothers and grandmothers and he requested them to
09:20never get tired of transmitting faith.
09:24And also he asked them as well to pray and also spoke to fathers and grandfathers.
09:30Your three children and grandchildren needs to see you, needs to see that faith is present within the family and
09:38the man of the family as well.
09:40So those are the messages at this hour from the Holy Mass.
09:45So when you do not count them by the children of the Holy Mass.
09:45So it is a message that we do not say that faith is transparent to the children of the family
09:45as well.
