Madrid's regional president Esperanza Aguirre and leader of the conservative wing of the ruling People's Party has resigned.
She recently clashed with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy upset by his moderate stance.
She announced last year that she had breast cancer, but denied that was the sole reason for her decision to end a 30-year political career.
