00:05Talk about a brain melter.
00:08Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we're counting down our picks for the Top 10 Mind-Bending Moments in Sci
00:14-Fi Movies.
00:19For this list, we're picking big screen twists and turns that left our minds blown and our eyes doubting what
00:25they'd just seen.
00:26In other words, shocking and memorable revelations or moments that kept us thinking and thinking and thinking.
00:32Is there someone in the room with us?
00:37Warning, this list contains spoilers.
00:42Number 10, Soylent Green is People, Soylent Green.
00:47Detective Thorne, 14th Precinct.
00:49See what we said about spoilers?
00:51In a world where industrialization has turned everything into an overpopulated wasteland,
00:55with a steadily declining food supply, the Soylent Corporation creates Soylent Green.
01:00You were young, people were better.
01:03Oh, nuts.
01:05People were always rotten.
01:08And the world was beautiful.
01:10This water-based green stuff is advertised as a great source of nutrition.
01:14Because of its enormous popularity, Soylent Green is in short supply.
01:19Remember, Tuesday is Soylent Green Day.
01:23So, on the surface, it appears to be the answer to human starvation.
01:26But unfortunately, it is later revealed to be made out of the actual remains of human corpses.
01:37The phrase, you are what you eat, has never been more true or more disturbing.
01:42It is people.
01:46Soylent Green is made out of people.
01:51Number 9, Ash is a robot alien.
01:55Ash, can you see this?
01:57Yes, I can.
02:01I've never seen anything like it.
02:03As if dealing with a deadly, chest-bursting alien wasn't enough,
02:07the crew of the Nostromo is in for one heck of a twist
02:09when it's revealed that their science officer, Ash, is really an android.
02:21Unbeknownst to the crew, his first priority was to bring the extraterrestrial life form back alive for research purposes,
02:28making the human crew expendable assets.
02:34Luckily for Ripley, she is saved at the last possible moment by Parker,
02:38which leaves Ash headless and her minds blown.
02:48Number 8, Dream or Reality, Total Recall.
02:52Number 8, Dream or Reality, Total Recall.
02:52You're dreaming.
02:55Doug, is it about Mars?
02:58In the world of Total Recall, customers can purchase memories and live out their wildest dreams
03:03without ever having to leave the building.
03:05No shit!
03:07Go fuck with your brain, pal!
03:08You ain't worth it!
03:10Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Douglas Quaid, a man who freaks out while getting his Mars vacation implant.
03:15I get it, I'm dreaming.
03:17And all this is part of the delightful vacation your company has sold me, right?
03:20Not exactly.
03:22What you're experiencing is a free-form delusion based on our memory tapes.
03:26But you're inventing it yourself as you go along.
03:30What if it is my delusion?
03:32Who the hell invited you?
03:34We later discover that Quaid is actually a man named Hauser,
03:36who's had his memories switched out so that Quaid would unknowingly lead the bad guys straight to their rebel leader.
03:42You paid to be a secret agent.
03:44Bullshit.
03:45It's coincidence.
03:46But wait, is his adventure on Mars even real?
03:50Or is Schwarzenegger actually in the simulation he signed up for?
03:53Talking about a mind-bender that keeps on bending.
03:56I just had a terrible thought.
03:58What if this is a dream?
04:01Number seven, intersecting timelines.
04:04Primer.
04:05It's traveling an odd number of forward and backward trips.
04:07If we've learned anything over the years, it's that time travel isn't all fun and games.
04:11Alright, we start the machine with the Weebo at the A in.
04:14It travels forward and you gotta write this down.
04:16Aaron, there's nothing to write down.
04:18Well then I'm writing it.
04:19Okay, fine, look.
04:19Sure, you might be able to travel to the past and fix a crucial mistake,
04:23or journey to the future to benefit from knowing what's to come,
04:25but there's no denying the dangerous risks you're taking.
04:29Come here for a second, man.
04:30What's on your hand?
04:31Are you bleeding?
04:32It is blood.
04:33Turn it around.
04:34Did you see it?
04:35Where's it coming from?
04:36In one of the most complex sci-fi films ever made,
04:38the characters of Primer learn the repercussions of time travel
04:41with each decision they make,
04:43encountering doubles of themselves,
04:45experiencing health problems,
04:46and much, much more,
04:47making us think twice about tampering with time.
04:50Who knows what would've happened if he hadn't been there?
04:56Now, this is what we call a brain tease.
05:01The ending of Terry Gilliam's 1985 science fiction classic is a head spinner.
05:11What was thought to be a happy ending for Sam Laurie is quickly revealed to be the product of his
05:16own delusions.
05:24In reality, Sam is still strapped to the chair in which he was being tortured following treason charges.
05:29Jack Lint and Mr. Helpman declare him to be a lost cause and leave Sam alone to smile and sing
05:35Brazil all to himself.
05:37The rewind function on your VCR has never been more appreciated.
05:40Tomorrow was another day, the morning found me miles away.
05:49Number five, Neo wakes up in the real world, The Matrix.
05:53You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to
05:59believe.
06:00Now that's what you call sugarcoating.
06:02You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.
06:10After deciding to take the red pill to go down the rabbit hole, Neo wakes up to a startling reality.
06:15The real world is a cold wasteland run by machines.
06:21Welcome to the real world.
06:24Humans are no longer born, but grown.
06:26Am I dead? Far from it.
06:30Everyone is connected to The Matrix, which is a world that's been created to hide them from the truth
06:34and prevent them from rising up to take back what's theirs.
06:38This can't be.
06:40Be what? Be real?
06:43Certainly makes you think twice about the future of video games now, doesn't it?
06:47The world as it was at the end of the 20th century.
06:52It exists now only as part of a neural interactive simulation that we call The Matrix.
06:59Number four. The truth about the planet. Planet of the Apes.
07:03To suggest that we can't learn anything about the simian nature from a study of man is sheer nonsense.
07:11In this sci-fi flick, the main characters crash land on a planet in which highly evolved apes are the
07:17dominant species.
07:18That the ape evolved from a lower order primate, possibly man.
07:24Possessing the ability to speak and having vast human-like intelligence,
07:28these apes easily capture the humans and prove to be formidable foes.
07:32Take your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty ape.
07:38However, when Taylor manages to free himself from captivity, he learns the terrifying truth.
07:43This alien planet isn't actually an alien planet at all, but Earth.
07:47Which has been devastated from a nuclear war that has long since passed.
07:55Truly a shocker to end all shockers.
07:58We finally really did it.
08:01You maniacs!
08:04You blew it up!
08:07Ah, damn you!
08:10God damn you all to hell!
08:14No!
08:15Number three, the spinning top, Inception.
08:18Just leave me, this is your first lesson in shared dreaming.
08:21Stay calm.
08:22In the world of dreams, each extractor must have a personal totem, for which only he or she knows its
08:28distinct characteristics in the real world, such as its weight.
08:31You need a small object, potentially heavy, something you can have on you all the time that no one else
08:36knows.
08:36Like a coin?
08:37No, it needs to be more unique than that.
08:39Knowing this allows the extractor to determine if they're in someone else's dream.
08:43That way when you look at your totem, you know beyond a doubt that you're not in someone else's dream.
08:49Cobb's totem is a spinning top that will only topple over if he's in the real world.
08:54Smalls actually, this, this one was hers. She'd spin it in the dream and it would never topple.
09:00Just, uh, spin and spin.
09:04However, the sci-fi heist thriller ends with Cobb's top still spinning, leaving us to question whether or not he's
09:10still in a dream or conscious.
09:12Which makes repeat viewings of the films a must.
09:20By the way, do you see that wobble at the end?
09:24Number two, extra-dimensional tesseract, Interstellar.
09:28We must confront the reality of interstellar travel.
09:33We must reach far beyond our own life spans.
09:38Director Christopher Nolan gives us yet another thinker with this 2014 science fiction epic, Interstellar.
09:43The story follows a group of astronauts traveling through a wormhole in an attempt to find another planet that can
09:48sustain human life.
09:50Our three prospects are at the edge of what might sustain human life.
09:55After Cooper sacrifices himself to ensure Bran's survival, he's pulled back in time by an extra-dimensional tesseract.
10:02Which allows him to communicate with his daughter and give her the solution to Bran's equation.
10:05How do you know?
10:07Because the bulk beams are closing the tesseract.
10:11Even though explaining all of this is quite the mouthful, this barely scratches the surface of Nolan's complex film.
10:17Don't you get it yet, Darth?
10:20They're not beings.
10:23They're us.
10:26What I've been doing for Murph, they're doing for me.
10:30Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
10:33So what do I call you anyway?
10:36I am a Trimaxian drone chip from-
10:38Trimaxian?
10:39Affirmative.
10:40Okay, I'll call you Max, it's easier.
10:44You had me cloned.
10:48Yes.
10:49Or you cloned the wrong man.
10:52Once in a while, one of us wakes up, while they're changing things.
10:56It's not supposed to happen, but it does.
10:59It happened to me.
11:01They'll come looking for you, Murdock.
11:04Hey, tell me the truth.
11:06Are we still in a game?
11:11Number one, Star Child.
11:142001, A Space Odyssey.
11:21Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece is a film that still leaves viewers stunned, regardless of how many times they've watched it.
11:32Though many scenes will leave you with thought-provoking questions, the ending leaves your mind forever bent.
11:38Dave.
11:42My mind is growing.
11:48I can feel it.
11:50As Bowman approaches the monolith near Jupiter, he's pulled into a vortex, transporting him across space at tremendous speeds.
12:02As his journey ends, he's transformed into a fetus inside a glowing orb, hovering near the Earth.
12:07The mind can only absorb so much information at a given time, and this most certainly is a brainful.
12:22Do you agree with our list?
12:23I am impressed.
12:25What's your favorite mind-bending sci-fi moment?
12:28Something, isn't it?
