Sir Keir Starmer has said Labour’s by-election success in Selby and Ainsty shows that the party “can win anywhere, including in places that were Tory strongholds.”
Flanked by shadow Cabinet ministers and supporters at the grounds of Selby Town FC, the Labour leader said that the result was “absolutely incredible” and that overturning a 20,000 Conservative majority marks a first for the party. 00:00 The result here in Selby and Ainstead is absolutely incredible.
00:03 It's the first time that the Labour Party in its history
00:07 has overturned a 20,000 majority in a former Conservative seat.
00:11 And I think it shows that after we've now changed the party,
00:16 we can win anywhere, including in places
00:19 that were Tory strongholds.
00:21 So I know the people in this constituency
00:23 have put their trust in the Labour Party,
00:25 in Keir Mather as the new MP, and we
00:28 deliver on that trust.
