00:00 [PAUSE]
00:18 >> Cameras all good in the back?
00:20 [PAUSE]
00:22 >> We'll run to you.
00:24 >> Well, bye Johnny.
00:26 It's not every day you get 99 not out.
00:29 It's quite unusual, but looking at your face as you walked off,
00:32 were you happy with the 99 that you did get rather than the one you didn't?
00:35 >> To score 99, you're pretty happy, aren't you?
00:39 We put on a really nice partnership at the end with Jimmy,
00:43 in the circumstance of the game, to get 275 in front.
00:47 And then to take four wickets tonight for 100 is all we could have done.
00:52 We've played a very good game so far.
00:55 The lads bowled really nicely in the first innings,
00:59 the sacks innings yesterday and the way in which we've gone about it.
01:02 I don't think we could have done too much more.
01:05 So we'll wait and see what happens over the next few days.
01:08 >> How pleasing or rewarding was it in innings like that,
01:11 in the context of everything you've been through in the last nine or ten months,
01:15 even a year?
01:17 It's been a really tricky time for you and you've been able to come back
01:20 and celebrate something like that.
01:22 >> Similar to in the first test match when I scored some runs as well.
01:27 When you're contributing to the side,
01:30 especially when we're playing in the way that we are,
01:33 there's going to be times that it doesn't come off because of the way
01:36 that we're trying to play the game and the way in which we're trying to take it forward.
01:41 I think that you've got to take the rough with this move with it.
01:44 There's been obviously, I've had a drag on and everything that happened at Lord's
01:49 and what have you, so it could change again.
01:53 Who knows?
01:54 >> You'll appreciate, obviously, I don't think we've spoken to you since everything that happened at Lord's.
01:58 >> I've got no comment on it.
01:59 >> Nothing at all?
02:00 >> No.
02:01 >> But you haven't felt like you'd wronged a party or anything?
02:04 >> I haven't said I've got no comment on it, thanks.
02:06 >> That's all right.
02:07 >> We'll go to Stefan from the BBC and then we'll do James.
02:10 >> Johnny, Josh Hazelwood's just come in here and said
02:16 Australia would be very pleased if the rain arrives over the weekend.
02:20 Given some of the battles that you've had against some pretty hard-nosed Australian teams,
02:24 how surprising is it here to hear an Aussie say something maybe so un-Australian?
02:30 >> I didn't know he'd said that, but yeah, obviously the way in which we've played the game
02:37 and come into the series and have played the game over the last 18 months
02:42 is something we're very proud of.
02:46 The momentum, whether it's with bat or ball, or how we're going about the game,
02:52 is definitely the right way to go about it going forward.
02:57 As a group, we've stuck together on that.
03:00 We've tried to go about it in exactly the way in which we have done,
03:03 no matter who we've played against.
03:06 So if that's the comments that are coming through,
03:09 well, the weather is the weather and I'm not Michael Fish.
03:14 >> Which gives you more satisfaction, the scream you took the other day behind the stumps
03:19 or the 99 runs?
03:21 >> Both in equal measure.
03:24 Yeah, there's obviously been some chitter-chatter and opinions
03:31 that have been rather interesting at times,
03:35 especially when there's not been many conversations around how my ankle is
03:42 or anything like that, and whether they're fair, whether they're not fair.
03:46 It's up to you guys to decide, because you guys are writing the different bits.
03:51 I've completely switched off from everything I've just been told,
03:54 a few snippets, shall we say.
03:56 So, yeah, it's been rather interesting and I'm delighted to be out there.
04:02 I'm incredibly proud and a proud man to be taking the field after the,
04:08 well, I'm still only 10 months post-operation now.
04:11 To have the injury that I had, to be back playing international sport
04:16 within nine months is something that I'm incredibly proud of,
04:20 because it wasn't necessarily the easiest thing to come back from.
04:25 And there's been a lot of testing times with it,
04:32 because naturally when you have an injury of that significance,
04:37 there's a chance that you don't play sport again.
04:41 >> How is the ankle and how hard has it been actually coming back to keeping
04:49 with the strain on the body that that gives, given the injury you had?
04:53 Has keeping been the hardest part rather than the batting?
04:56 >> Keeping after three years, not keeping, it's one of those things that
04:59 takes a bit of time to get back to irrelevant of the ankle.
05:03 That's part and parcel of it.
05:06 It'd be like you guys taking a three-year sabbatical and then coming back
05:12 and writing to the same level in which you do day in, day out.
05:17 So I'm sure you wouldn't necessarily find that easy,
05:19 or maybe even three years off a bit of touch typing without a delete button
05:24 and see how that then pops up.
05:26 >> Okay, we'll go to James Cole, Mel Farrell, Sonia,
05:29 and then we'll take two more after that.
05:31 >> Jonny, how have you dealt with that criticism and have you used it as motivation?
05:35 >> Not really, I've had it for pretty much all my career.
05:38 So it's part and parcel of it.
05:40 I've completely stayed away from it, to be honest.
05:42 Surrounded myself with my family and my friends that have been there
05:45 through thick and thin,
05:47 surrounded myself with the guys in the dressing room.
05:50 And I'm incredibly proud to have that support network down there
05:55 in the inner sanctum of the dressing room that we have
05:58 and the support network of my close friends and family.
06:01 >> Does it bring out the best in you, though, when you feel like you're something to prove
06:06 or fight against people?
06:08 >> I don't know, what do you think? I don't know.
06:10 >> It seems to bring out the best in you sometimes.
06:13 >> Last summer?
06:14 >> Exactly.
06:15 >> Was that the same, was it?
06:16 >> I don't know either.
06:17 >> OK, let's ask about tomorrow then, let's lock it on.
06:21 And six more wickets to take.
06:23 How are the guys feeling?
06:25 Obviously the forecast is in the background,
06:27 but how confident are you that you can get these last wickets?
06:30 >> Look, we've taken four for 100 today.
06:33 I think that it's been a really good day for us as a group.
06:39 I think that the skills that the boys employed on that wicket
06:43 and the way in which they went about it in bold was, again, a credit to the bowling attack.
06:50 So coming in tomorrow, if there is a bit of weather around, maybe some overheads,
06:55 you'd like to hope we're able to create some chances.
06:59 We'll turn up in the morning when you open your curtains, when we open the curtains,
07:03 and we'll all come in and see what tomorrow holds
07:07 because the weathermen have been right, the weathermen have been wrong.
07:11 Who knows what's going to happen, but we'll still turn up with the same mindset
07:14 and that will be to try and take another six wickets, which will be 20 wickets within the game.
07:19 That's all we're trying to do as a group, as a bowling attack.
07:24 >> We'll do one each, Mel and Sonia, then we're done.
07:27 Mel, go ahead.
07:28 >> Johnny, just that sort of eight over period with you and Jimmy,
07:32 and I think you added 66 runs, it sort of looked like you were in complete control of that
07:37 and to the point where straight you seemed to be doing everything that you wanted them to do
07:41 to the point of bowling short, you being able to run through with the bars.
07:45 Can you just talk us through, did you feel in control out there
07:48 and did you feel you kind of had them on the back foot the whole time
07:51 because it was very similar in some ways to what Ben did in a couple of tests in this series as well?
07:58 >> I'd have liked a few more fielders up, to be honest.
08:01 That would have been nice.
08:03 Look, I think when you're in those situations, I've been in that situation with Jim a couple of times,
08:09 even here at Old Trafford and previously when we've been batting
08:14 and Jimmy's very good in those situations.
08:17 His defence is high end.
08:21 Yes, he cops quite a bit at the end there,
08:25 but I think his technique on the short ball is actually very good
08:29 and to have the courage and the guts to stand up and do that,
08:34 what is it, 180 second test match I think it is.
08:38 I think he's copped a few bounces and a few blows like we've seen previously.
08:42 Look, I think that from a control point of view, you've got a game plan.
08:48 You've got a clear game plan as to how that might go about it,
08:52 but when you're setting it up, you're trying to score as many as we can.
08:57 Brodie and everyone, Woody, etc, were still taking singles.
09:02 That was the mindset to try and keep that ticking over,
09:05 to keep trying to go a little bit further in front rather than turning the singles down.
09:11 Obviously when they bring the field up, a couple went through,
09:15 which wasn't necessarily trying to get through, but it was part and parcel of it.
09:19 Yes, it was a nice partnership at the end.
09:23 They've played a lot of cricket, those guys, and they know exactly what they're doing in those situations.
09:29 Stoke said after Headingley that there was more to come from you.
09:34 Do you think that batting performance was as perfect as you can get,
09:37 given that all but one of the batters in the top seven had at least half-centuries?
09:42 I got a half-century in the first test, so I was pretty happy with that as well.
09:50 I think that whether you look at it that way or you look at it in other ways,
09:55 there's going to be games where you don't score runs.
10:00 You're going to have little ups, downs and everything in between.
10:04 It's part and parcel of the game.
10:08 I've still been training the same way, I've still been practising the same way,
10:11 I've still been working hard on my game.
10:14 Nothing's changed from that point of view.
10:18 I've thoroughly enjoyed being back around my mates within this group.
10:24 Like I said earlier, the group that we've got is a special group and a very tight group.
10:31 We're very proud of what we've got down in that dressing room.
10:35 It takes a lot to work hard to be in it,
10:39 and when you are in it you don't want to let that go,
10:42 so you want to work doubly as hard to stay in it.
10:45 OK, thank you. Thanks, Jono.
10:47 Thank you.
