00:00 Tuesday, heads of state and high officials of South American nations gathered in Belém,
00:05 the capital of the Brazilian state of Pará, in the fourth Amazon Summit.
00:09 The event is headed by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and is attended
00:14 by the eighth president of the countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization.
00:19 At the two-day summit, the governors and environment ministers will aim to strengthen environmental
00:24 protection mechanisms and halt deforestation in the Amazon by 2030, as well as develop
00:30 sustainable development policies for the countries of the region, independent of governments
00:35 and monitor the impact of climate change and the rainforest and the Amazon ecosystem.
00:40 Lula thanked the regional governors whose initiatives against deforestation, organized
00:45 crime and sustainable development will be the focus of their interventions.
00:53 And precisely in his speech, the governor of Pará stated that the delegations attending
00:57 this event share common objectives in the need to preserve the values of the men and
01:02 women in the region.
01:03 A house in which all the ones present here share the same thoughts, the same convictions,
01:29 based on the values of men and women in the region, defending the main reasons why we
01:40 are defending these values.
01:50 We don't need to transform in order to produce.
02:01 We need to analyze past events in order to be able to solve the current problems and
02:09 be able to develop our current situation.
02:13 And also in the working meeting of the fourth Amazon summit, Lula da Silva stressed that
02:18 the event marks the beginning of a new era in which respect for indigenous peoples will
02:23 be the central axis.
02:48 The Brazilian leader pointed out that during years of looting in the Amazon, indigenous
02:52 leaders and the community in general suffered violence just for trying to protect what belongs
02:57 to them.
02:59 During this time, the leaders, environmental leaders, indigenous leaders, suffered all
03:05 kinds of attacks and violence just because they were trying to protect a territory that
03:14 belongs to the people and has always belonged to the people.
03:19 And the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, warned about how the climatic crisis or the
03:24 environmental crisis is caused by the industrialization.
03:29 This is mostly focused on the economic and scientific breakthroughs.
03:53 What we can tell is mostly because the environmental crisis that we are facing right now is the
04:03 result of the greed of capitalism and the constant need for industrialization.
04:15 The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, warned about how in the case of his country,
04:19 it will be necessary to reconcile the reforestation of the Amazon when there are sectors that
04:24 only seek to exploit it.
04:27 We will have to see in the case of Colombia how to protect rural areas.
04:49 We need to protect this area, which is something indigenous people understand, mainly because
04:57 it is where they live.
04:58 But the rest of the citizens need to fully understand and be aware of the importance
05:04 that this matter has.
05:16 We need to leave the Amazon for a while and give it some time to recover, to regrow, to
05:28 be able to recover from all the damages that we have caused.
05:36 In this same context, the Venezuelan vice president, Delsi Rodriguez, highlighted the
05:40 importance of governmental action.
05:44 I think that it is also important to highlight that it is the government's responsibility
05:53 to create those ecological alternatives that we need.
06:01 This is not something that we have to lay on the shoulders of the science.
06:06 We definitely need the help of scientists, but we cannot give all the responsibility
06:14 to them.
06:15 It is the government's responsibility to take action in this matter.
06:25 From Venezuela, via social media, President Nicolás Maduro Morales praised the work of
06:29 the host country and the delegations participating in the summit and stated that in the social
06:35 network Twitter, that with work, effort and a concrete plan ready for action, they will
06:40 advance together in the reforestation, sanitation and recovery of the Amazon for the welfare
06:46 of the indigenous peoples.
06:48 The Venezuelan leader also stressed that the region is moving towards a new humanity.
06:52 Thank you.
