Lightning from dry thunderstorms could ignite new wildfires across the West into the weekend.
Transcript
00:00 Okay, it's no secret it has been excruciatingly hot across the southern tier of the country
00:06 from the peninsula of Florida all the way to California.
00:10 But here's the thing, the heat is centered this week across Texas as it has been.
00:16 It's drifting though, west and east and west and east and cities like Phoenix are getting
00:20 in on the action this week.
00:22 That said, it's also been excruciatingly dry, not just because of the heat and high pressure.
00:28 Remember they do work hand in hand with the drought conditions, but I will say the monsoon
00:33 has been lackluster this season.
00:36 Very different from what we saw last year where the monsoon was robust in the desert
00:41 southwest.
00:42 Pockets of moisture here and there, but again a very different situation from last year.
00:46 You'll see even on satellite and radar some spotty moisture around Vegas, but that's just
00:50 about it as we look through this morning.
00:53 Today we are dry, dry, dry in Phoenix and in Reno.
00:57 We're going to be hot in Phoenix by the way, 108 degrees, a little above the historical
01:01 average, although it's better than 115 that we saw just about a week ago.
01:06 San Diego and San Francisco, gorgeous day today, not exactly a surprise.
01:10 70s and sunny for both cities, not too far from the historical average.
01:14 We do bring up a few extra thunderstorms as we move into Thursday, largely across southern
01:19 Utah out through northern Arizona and just stretching across the state line into New
01:23 Mexico as well.
01:24 We're going to keep an eye on a similar trend as we look into Friday.
01:28 We're just shifting the storms a little bit further north.
01:31 Cities like Reno will get in on the action as will Salt Lake City, Grand Junction on
01:34 the edge as well.
01:36 High pressure largely in charge of the southwest yet again.
01:39 Here's the thing though, it's not necessarily the monsoon, but an area of low pressure moving
01:44 onshore over the weekend that will expand the moisture in cities like Elko, Reno, Salt
01:51 Lake City down to Cedar City and back to Grand Junction across the front range of the
01:54 Rockies.
01:55 This is more moisture than what we've seen lately with this area of low pressure moving
01:59 onshore, so we're going to keep a close eye for some soaking thunderstorms.
02:03 Be aware if you're planning to head out and hike perhaps any of the ranges or any of the
02:07 national parks in the area, it could be a bit wet and even looking at the possibility
02:13 of flooding on drought-stricken ground.
